Not meaning to be critical, but...

Why can't you get that on the original negative rather than resorting to computer enhancement.

It appears to be a pretty normal scene/subject.

- Leigh

The lighting would have completely prohibited that final result. The statue wasn't really receivng any direct strong light and was in shadow. The statue and middle area required ample dodging. Certainly impossible to achieve on the negative.

A few from the vaults. Not exactly a church, but all made inside a church. Does that count?

I don't mind at all and I usually post them on another forum. It's always a bit tricky since some people don't look at post processing in a good light. I can get you the original of that image when I get home. Here is the straight raw scan of my previous church image (should work, I can't see imageshack at work):

I am trying to work more with masked curves adjustment layers versus the dodge and burn tool in CS5. The straight scan of the one you are asking for is pretty much the same. Very light and flat.

Interesting! Thanks.

Here's a memorial plaque to Henricus Aldrich on wall of the nave of Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford. It's not the first skull and wings I've come across. Presumably it's to indicate that because the dead person (skull) was a good person he's being transported into heaven on angel's wings? Hmmm ...

This is one of five from the cathedral that I've just posted on my website as part of my ongoing project to photograph England's cathedrals.

:D I appreciate that. I do wish the original was 'better' but this was an instance where I didn't even think about the final tones, unfortunately. I was really only thinking of the composition there. When I'm outside I am generally very aware of the lighting. But in the Cathedral it was hard for me to visualize the outcome even if I tried. I need to work on that. Not sure I'd be the best teacher either :D. A lot of dodging and burning or an equivalent method. A lot of it is intuitive so it's hard to say how to employ. I generally try and work the contrast and lighting in a way the guides the viewers attention to the focal points, if possible. At least I think that's what I try and do.

We spend Thanksgiving on the Island each year, Just happened to have a high cloud layer and probably shot around midmorning. Most of the times I've visited are under Harsh lighting conditions which makes it difficult to shoot. With Thanksgiving service they probably tidied up the lawn somewhat but then I never have seen it look really ragged. Enjoy shooting around St Simons, Jekyll, and St Mary's when ever I'm down in the fall.

Ansel had a shot of this in his "40 Examples" book called Church and Road (1953), which I've long admired. The building behind was in the Hitchcock film where the birds attacked the school kids.

Nice job!!

I like the exposure and development a lot on both. I'm not quite as keen on the framing/composition, particularly on the first. I don't like the left side of the arched doorway being right on the edge of the frame.

I suspect these are places you could go again - both look like they are worthy of much deeper looking. I'd look at these as a good starting point on the way to even better things.

Behold the wrath of God.

Christchurch has been battered by so much quake damage over the past several years.

This picture clearly, and without artistic license, documents the basic human truth: shock at the failure of the Cathedral, the fundamental refuge.

It also holds the message that, shaken, shattered and cracked, the refuge still stands.

I don't know why, but this picture stands out, with its several stylistic lapses, as a scream from the soul of a lifelong local, numbed by the constant bombardment of journalistic attention to domestic and commercial devastation.

This is a plea to the world, to understand that "Yes, our city core is shattered; yes, our homes are destroyed; yes, our commerce has been devastated; but now, we see that even the Cathedral of our faith has been shaken: now, we too are shaken."

"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"

well i sorta 'cheated' on the rise. using 6x17 straight on and cropped the neg. This is only a film scan though. I'll get around to printing when I get my enlarger figured out for this format... but it gets me HUGE rise - or it's equivalent.

Irfanview, best photo manipulation program on the planet, and it's free from www.irfanview.com
Download it from the Tucows link, not from CNET. The latter tries to add various baggage.

Be sure to download both files, the program and the add-ons. Install the program first.

It does very high-quality resize, with a choice of algorithms.
It also does basic manipulations like cropping, exposure/contrast modifications, etc.

This is a windoze-native program. I also run it on my Mac using Crossover.

oh thanks Leigh - but I'm happy with the job photoshop does - after the thousands and thousands of bucks I've probably paid for it over the years - might as well get some use out of it right?? :) What I actually meant was "is there a resize argument with the posting here ?" i.e. width = "XX" height = "YY" etc..?

I have finished restoring my Kodak 7x11 camera, complete with a new bellows, a 8x10 film back adapter, and lens board that will accept my Kodak Full Plate lens boards. While I have very little left on the roll of Plus X Arial film, I did cut enough for a few sheets. Here are two shots of Sharon Methodist Church established in 1862. The vertical shot is with Plus X and the horizontal is with Fuji HR-U Green X-ray film.
You can see where I have worked to correct scratches on the x-ray film. Still working on that problem and hope I can make progress. I have more from this film cut to 5x7 posted on Flickr.
The rays of light at seem to come from the church window toward where I am standing, I can not explain. Think “He” is telling me something.

Camera – Kodak 7 x 11
Lens – Kodak Ektar 190mm Wide
Film – Fuji HR-U processed in HC-110 100/1 in Beseler
Drum on Motor Base
-- Kodak Plus X processed in HC-110 50/1

I was in Cotabato in the southern Philippines last week. I saw a tourist brochure for the Grand Mosque, the largest in the Philippines, built by the Sultan of Brunei at a cost of some 45 million dollars. The picture was crappy, but the whole complex looked like it would make a lovely night shot, and I happened to have my modified Crown Graphic kit I put together just for work trips like this. Unfortunately, I was told it was an insecure area, and if I wanted to go at night we would need to hire a security team as an escort, so I blew that off, and shot the opposite, a small, cheaply made mosque behind my hotel. Although the concrete walls and open framed minarets were rough in the daytime, I thought the lights added elegance at night. I figured I needed ten seconds at f11 to get this shot on fp4, and the image is a pretty accurate representation of what I saw. Thinking 10 seconds felt short, I shot the second at 60 seconds, just in case, and it provides a lot more detail than I could actually see.

Thank you very much. One of the advantage of visiting off-season is that there is a lot less people in the cathedrals.
Yes usually baroque churches do not have strong architectural lines so you have to embrace instead the bountifulness of details and give it some space to keep the character of the sacred (if that is part of what you want). Definitely calls for selective framing. Luckily all the gold can increase a little bit the low light level to see what you are doing :-)

I waffled on whether to share this one. The light was about as drab as it gets (and that's saying a lot in Portland), and to my eye at least, it's one of those pictures that looks crooked even though it's not crooked. Okay, maybe it's a little crooked; it would really help if I had grid lines on my ground glass, or even some levels. But enough complaining. It's an impressive building, if not an impressive photograph.

You're right, you know, in a sense. One might call this a church of natural religion – certainly less plainly visible than, say, a Buddhist temple, Jewish synagogue, gothic cathedral, or Anasazi kiva. But it had a great vogue from the mid-1700's thru mid-1800's – a house of worship, one might say, for both the Deist and Romanticist faithful. Many poets described its architecture (think Wordsworth, etc.) and many painters depicted it (think Frederic Church, etc.). Photographers soon followed, as we all know. Then and now, it might be best to use Emerson's "transparent eyeball" to see this church in every detail, but seeing it is no more an advantage than seeing, say, brick-and-mortar or adobe churches. As this thread testifies, all of them make for great images when the light is good!

Doug Howk
5-Mar-2014, 17:45
There are many locations where one may have a religious experience (usually related to beauty and/or sublime); but they shouldn't all be called churches. To me, a church at its best is a work of art created by man (generic), while at its worst just another storefront in some strip mall. I'm old-fashion in that to me Art is something we create rather than found. We may worship sacred groves, rocks, water, etc.; but they are not churches. Just my 2 cents.

Ironage
6-Mar-2014, 05:47
The meaning of the word church has historically been "gathering" and the pictures here are sacred gathering places. Church doesn't really have anything to do with solitary religious experiences in nature. Both are great stuff, just not church.

jp
6-Mar-2014, 07:24
My perspective is that church is a collective of people who believe/worship/help. (such as described in Matthew or Acts) "Church building" is often just conveniently truncated to church. I do it, everyone does it. A more descriptive title for the thread could be Post your religious architecture. But like defining the word photograph, it's more about how the word is used rather than how it ought to be used.

"Church building" is often just conveniently truncated to church. I do it, everyone does it. ... it's more about how the word is used rather than how it ought to be used.

I'm sort of amazed that this tread went so long without coming to this. I participated with a few other photographers for about 4 years on a documentary project photographing historic churches in Texas. Hardly anyone was confused by our calling the endeavor the "Texas Church Project". However, we got more than one lecture by (I suppose) well-meaning souls that the church was the people and not the building. Having grown up around evangelicals, I was not surprised, just frustrated. In point of fact, the dictionary says that a "church" is (among other things) "a building used for public Christian worship".

It is, therefore, correct usage. It seems also to have been readily understood in the context of this forum for a number of years ...

It was my pleasure to spend the day of March 20th photographing Hobcaw Barony near Georgetown, SC. It is simply a great for photography, no crowds, great subjects from the low country of South Carolina, plus items from the area history. Worth a Google search or much better a visit.
This shot is of a slave village from the rice plantation age. Shown are the church, and the building use as a doctor’s office. This is not the one of the grand churches shown so often.

Did you consider another exposure to capture moon texture?

I'm curious if exposing for the moon would have sacrificed The Savior.

Richard M. Coda

I did not consider another exposure. I was in the middle of the desert, at night, and had been there since sundown (about 4 hours total). I also took some when the sun was hitting it straight on at sunset. It was hard enough to focus as is in the dark, and I think it would have made the church too dark. I can always photoshop in a better moon.

Built in the late 11th, or early 12th century, the Orphir Round Kirk is thought to have been built by Earl Hakon. Dedicated to Saint Nicholas, its design was inspired by the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem.

A new scan of an old negative. The camera was a 4x5 Calumet monorail, can't recall the lens.

Wonderful - I'm an admirer of Mario Botta, and live quite close to one of his major buildings. I must try to visit this chapel.

Well, it's sort of a rolling church.
