Thanks Darren.

I was lucky in this capture as work was being done inside the church and they had the statues on the altar lighted so I didn't waste any time in setting-up and taking the picture. The lights went off a few minutes after I took it.

I over-corrected for converging verticals - learned another lesson the hard way.
Tried FP4+ in Diafine the first time and it worked out great - lost no highlights while exposing for the deep shadows.
The shadow-details in the fullsize-scan are amazing to me.

St. Mary's Church was built in 1858 to serve the Catholic residents in the mining community of Cliff, MI, the scene of the area's first major copper discovery in 1844. Services continued until 1899 when the church was dismantled and reassembled in Phoenix, where it was renamed The Church of Assumption.

Had a horrible time shooting this, between the wind and uneven ground and a sandwich sign in front of the building that I did not want to appear in the image. It had me cussing, ask my wife, the tripod porter. :)

Patrick, great work! I like the depth due to the rock in the foreground, I like those clouds that make the light "explode" out of the church. Overall a good thing. I could do with a bit larger image to see more of the details :-)

I get a little bit the impression that the tower is leaning to the right, maybe not completely levelled or the film wasn't all level in the cassette... or is that on purpose?

Patrick Medd

Thanks Sascha,

Does get larger if you click on it but I've a larger version on mobile me:

If it is leaning to the right it's not intentional - maybe I needed to level the camera better:)

Quick and dirty scan from a silver gelatin print -- print was a little too big for the scanner, so I lost a bit of grass at the bottom on the image.

4x5 negative, TMax 100, probably a yellow filter. Taken while on a solo 5 or so month bicycle trip in New Zealand many years ago. Gowland PocketView, 150mm/5.6 Caltar IIN. Hard steady wind -- I had a bite to eat in the tall grass where I had set the camera up. It was warm out of the wind.

That's a nice image, Steven. I like the centered view with just a touch of asymmetry. I also like the parallelogram of light on the floor with the squarish piece of metal. I'm wondering if removing just a touch of blue might help it a little, but I'm not certain of that. There is a lot to enjoy in the image - I'd love to see a larger print of it.

The Midwest Large Format Asylum went exploring last Saturday and stopped by Holy Family church where Father Boland was planting flowers outside the entrance. He was very kind and let us photograph his alter...what an alter!!! This was shot on Tri-X rated ISO 50 and developed in a two bath compensating developer (as outlined in Bruce Barnbaum's book The Art of Photography). The lighting was very difficult in that the only light sources were the backlit windows and the small Christmas tree type lights.

Really enjoying all the images of churches posted so far. It's a subject matter that I enjoy working with.
Not sure if I posted this before... If I have, I apologize. In love with the "modernistic" rib vaulting inside the Abbey, Mission, BC.

Very nice!

One of the members of a photo discussion group said that photographs of churches tend to be cold and sterile. I can understand how that could be said, but the fact is that I still like them very much. The fact that the subjects are churches is a factor, but a larger consideration for me is that I really enjoy the elegance of spaces. And interiors of churches are a natural subject for large format photography.

I thought as much. I was there in September 2008 and if I recall correctly The Priory was about to undergo some major restoration works. Did it happen and did they do it well? I hope so. Or am I thinking of somewhere else?

By the way, seeing your picture promped me to go back and look at my own negatives to see if I'd printed it flipped horizontally - I do that by mistake occasionally! But for once, it's not me. I think yours is flipped, not mine!

This is Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, established in 1901, in Glendale Springs, North Carolina. Glendale Springs is located just of the Blue Ridge Parkway on highway 16. In the small mountain town the church is home to a full wall fresco by world famous painter Ben Long. The fresco is “The Load’s Supper”. If you are every in the area, it is well worth the stop.

Thanks. Yes, it is a tourist trap in many ways but sometimes I try to embrace that and use them as elements in the shot. Anyway, I've still got 3-4 sheets to develop and some roll film too. I might have to make a Savannah-specific thread when I'm ready.

I had a similar incident with tourists at Oak Alley Planation in Louisiana two years ago. I had set up my camera to take a photo of this magnificant plantation home. And there were many tourists wandering out in front of it. A group of them came up to me and asked me what I was doing. I told them that I was "just waiting to take its photo."
They stated - Waiting for what? To which I replied - waiting for everyone to move out of the way.
In response, I got a rude "Well, we're sorry we're in your way."
I said - No reason to be upset, you paid your way just like I did. I'm just not going to take the photo with all those people out in front.....

Leigh

I'm just not going to take the photo with all those people out in front.....
That's why slow films and ND filters were invented. :p

I'm sure a 10-minute exposure would eliminate them... no mess, no bother.

I haven't done enough reciprocity tests to do a 10-minute exposure just yet, especially not in mixed light. Anyway, even a longish exposure is not a guarantee. The folks down front were standing talking for about 10 minutes before I finally just said screw it and shot the photo. Most of the tourists are blurred out though even in my 15 second exposure.

This is Centre Presbyterian Church in my home town of Mooresville. The church was established in 1765 and still going strong. The church in the photographs was built in 1854. In the gravestone shot one stone has the date of death of 1843 after a life of 84 years, so date of birth was 1759.
The church has been a source of faith to many in every war the USA as fought.

The interior and church from cemetery was with a very small Danforth 4x5 wide angle lens, wide open about F5 after wheel stops removed. The gravestones made with Cooke Series 11 8.2 inch lens at F11. Film was HP4.

This is the Chapel of the Cross in Flora, Mississippi. It was built in the late 1850s on Annandale Plantation to host the wedding of the plantation owner's daughter. Her betrothed died before the wedding, however, and she married someone else, though she actually told her husband that he was her "second choice." All three are buried in the churchyard. The chapel is still in use one or two Sundays a month.

I shot this with my first Speed Graphic, using the focal plane shutter. The camera had a light leak I had sealed with automotive gasket compound. Film was Tri X, exposure unrecorded, exposed in about 1981 or so.

An older 4x5 negative that I never processed. I only had a super wide angle 75mm at the time and thought this was too vertical. I cropped a good bit off the top and was able to work the contrast a lot. I am going to try a Kallitype soon as I think that will work well here, but who knows.

I am happy with how it turned out and I'm glad I re-stumbled upon the image on my HD. It has given me some ideas to go back to the Cathedral with especially with 8x10 and a couple different focal lengths.

I like the tonal range, though maybe the development could be pushed a little to make the statue closer to white. Personally I probably would have composed without that closer column in the way but that's just me.

Thanks Kirk! I am pretty critical of my own work. I just wish the pillars had more shape from some better lighting perhaps.

Hey Zack, mind posting an original before you did your editing in PS? Curious to see it.

I don't mind at all and I usually post them on another forum. It's always a bit tricky since some people don't look at post processing in a good light. I can get you the original of that image when I get home. Here is the straight raw scan of my previous church image (should work, I can't see imageshack at work):

To my final edit:

I am trying to work more with masked curves adjustment layers versus the dodge and burn tool in CS5. The straight scan of the one you are asking for is pretty much the same. Very light and flat.

Not meaning to be critical, but...

Why can't you get that on the original negative rather than resorting to computer enhancement.

It appears to be a pretty normal scene/subject.
