Hi, I'm sorry my question isn't about a large format camera, but I thought someone here would be able to help me.

I'm trying to photograph artwork using my Nikon D80. I think I have the settings right - I've done the white balance, etc. But the camera is shooting every other picture dark. I've got it on a tripod and the light isn't changing between shots.

I have it set to provide both a NEF and a jpg. But I've shot with this setting before without the camera alternating between dark and light photos.

Any idea what's going on?

If you have tips for photographing artwork (huge paintings) I would really appreciate any help.

THANKS!

It could be a noise reduction feature if the exposure is really long and second shot really is black.

Suggest you go over to www.nikonians.org/forums (http://www.nikonians.org/forums) and see if anyone can help.

As to specifics of shooting artwork, it can get very technical with polarised light sources - it is well documented on what to do if you google or even find a text book. I just haven't needed to learn this!

the D80 has a mode where you can auto bracket. any chance that you have somehow set the camera to autobracket with the exposure difference you see in the results?

Deep within the menu on the LCD screen, turn on the 8x10 film format feature, then all your questions will be answered by this group.

Try reading the manual that comes with your camera.

Are the jpegs ok and the NEFs dark? Or does the first jpeg and NEF file look ok and the second jpeg and NEF file look dark? If it is the first case I would bet the NEF/RAW file is dark and needs to be processed in a RAW converter. Quite often the jpegs from my D40 look like they are exposed correctly but the NEF files are off.
