Hi! This is my first post on this forum. I like photographing people and places. Recently got my first LF camera. The attached shot is from Rosamond, California, that I took last week. Shot with a Deardorff 8x10, 240mm Rodenstock, f/16 @ 1/125 sec., Fujichrome 100.

8x10 is heavy, cumbersome, and slow. There are way too many steps, procedures, and processes that are involved (compared to small formats or digital). It requires a lot of patience and thinking to compose, measure lighting, and to shoot. Loading takes time, so does processing and scanning. And the weight of the tripod is just outrageous. What can I say. I just LOVE it. Thank you for welcoming me into the addiction.

Welcome, Bella!

Ain't 8x10 grand?!

Just for fun, here is another classic California image (only I am not sure that it is CA -- it might be just over the border in Arizona...on Business Hwy 8-- it was a while back). It is also just a tiny 6cmx6cm neg. Scanned form a RA4 print I made.

Here's another transparency that I recently got processed. The photograph was taken in Yosemite. '56 8x10 Deardorff, 240mm Rodenstock, f/45 @ 1/8 sec, Fujichrome 100. I'm not use to seeing big vivid transparencies. I can see why so many people have such a strong passion for large format photography.

That water looks I like the stones visible under the water where shaded - they seem to play well with the reflected rock face of the mountain.

Which Fujichrome is that, Astia?

Hey there Don! I read that the resteraunt part burnt down in 1998 and was rebuilt...I was wondering why the photos of the place looked a little different than I remembered. I dug into my records and I made that image in December 1991. I had my 5x7 with me, but I guess I did not think it was worth a shot in B&W.

Looking at the various images of the place on the different sites, I, with great modesty, think mine is the best ;) . I got lucky with the clouds/jet contrails and they look like the saucer caused them.

Belle -- another classic CA image...tho in a much different vein than your first! Setting up an 8x10 in Yosemite especially in a high visitation area like that is fun! I did the same along the trail to Lower Yosemite Falls -- I spent a lot of time under the dark cloth just listening to the comments of all the people walking by.

Since I live in CA, most of my images are of CA -- but I will try to find some prints along a more "classical" line than my usual landscapes (and I will double check to make sure they are actually are from CA!) :o I have one of Laguna Beach, but might be awhile before I can track down a print to scan.

Nice shot, Wally. I spent a few winters in Ocean Beach (early 80's). Too crazy in the summertime! I had to get up at 7am to go to work but did not need an alarm clock -- as that is when the first jet of the day would take off from the airport and roar directly overhead. Often I would get up earlier and enjoy the sunrise on the beach with no one else around.

Nice photo museum there in San Diego now.

Vaughn - The Yosemite photo was taken after a big tour group hopped back onto their bus. There were a lot of curious onlookers and I did get some questions from the tour guide. It was really nice to get all the space to myself for a brief moment, after everyone left. Attached is a digital shot right before I took the LF shot.

Wally - I used Provia 100F.

I did make one attempt at taking photos with people in it. Unfortunately, I used an old, outdated Kodak Ektachrome 100 from the person I purchased some of my equipment from (I won't do that again). The photo has a brownish cast to it. Shot with 8x10 Deardorff, Rodenstock 240mm, f/45 @ 1/2 sec.

That rocks! (sorry;) ) But how nice of them to have pained the rock "sky-blue"!

Vaughn

PS...but I can't help but wonder what the image would have looked like taken one small step closer, vertical, and the rock almost at the bottom of the image. O course, that would then have been my image, and not yours, but I still wonder!

belle
22-Oct-2008, 13:35
Vaughn - I wonder on the vertical too. I was focused on having the road on the right side of the rock travel parallel to the dirt in front.

Here's a vertical shot of the Watts Tower that I took last Thursday in South Central L.A. Shot with 8x10 Deardorff,f/45@1/15 sec, Fujichrome, 100 F.

I wonder what it would look like if you'd used view camera movements to prevent convergence of the verticals?

Don7x17 - Good point. I'll have to go back and try that.

Vaughn - I wonder on the vertical too. I was focused on having the road on the right side of the rock travel parallel to the dirt in front.
That's why I was leering about mentioning the vertical possibility -- you were there and brought all the elements together as you saw/found them -- including the elements not actually in the photo -- to create your image. I am just an ignorant bystander.

Vaughn

Great towers, too! You may not want to correct the lean all the way -- a bit of a lean can give the brain a greater impression of height.

belle
22-Oct-2008, 16:26
Vaughn - Thanks for the tip. I appreciate it.

Don7x17
23-Oct-2008, 13:16
Vaughn - Thanks for the tip. I appreciate it.

And if you like the convergence, you might augment it by tilting the back towards you...you can make the towers look even taller... you are in control with a view camera as long as you don't exceed the coverage of the lens (and be sure to stop down to see coverage. Most lenses have more coverage when stopped down).

Nice series of color 8x10's - but I also like that digial image instead of the one without people. Its hilarious with all the people posing for others to make pictures.

thanks for posting

I bet the chrome looks wonderful. What do the wires on the right go up to? Is it a telephone pole? If it is I would love to include that in the composition. I don't care for the way the wires just lead the eye up and out of the frame.

Belle, This your Canon digital shot is almost 3-D like, far more superior than all your 8x10 chromes. Why do you start to use 8x10?

belle
3-Nov-2008, 13:04
Andress007 - I had really good lighting on my subjects which was a big plus when I took the Yosemite photo with the tourists. I think I would have been able to get the same 3D quality photo with my 8x10 given the proper timing.

The Yosmite 8x10 are my first few attempts at large format. What I like about color LF is the incredible amount of detail and vividness I get from the negative. To appreciate the 8x10, you really need to scan and print your images to be wowed by it. There's also an element of care that goes into using LF camera. I enjoy the slow process of thinking about each photograph that I take - subject, composition, lighting, etc.

belle
3-Nov-2008, 13:12
Christopher - Attached is a photo with the telephone lines shot with my digital camera. For some reason, I found the poles a bit distracting. So I opted for a closer photograph.

Looking at the two images, I prefer having the wires going off the image -- sort of having the building tethered to a world outside of the photographic image. Sometimes less information is more.

Christopher, you CAN do it in your apartment! I built an 11x14 and an 8x20 camera in my apartment and I am just starting the carbon transfer experience in my one bedroom apartment. I realize I have more space but who needs a real bed? Get one of those blow up beds you can move easily and lean against the wall and you have much more space! Yes I am crazy but it works!
