Hello,

Recently I've found some interesting pictures over the net that was toned with cobalt. That resource doesn't give formula because it sells ready made toner. Maybe some of you know how to prepare cobalt toner, please share the knowledge.

Regards, Alexey.

You are trying to steal my formula, eh? Eh???

:-)

I just had to...
But seriously, in painting, cobalt is used to create some of the best pigments, cobalt blue, for example. It is toxic, as is cadmium. Don't know much else about this.

Can you give me some more info about how the prints looked? Were the whites, white or did they also have a cobalt tone to them?

Most metal toners are fairly similar, so replacing whatever iron salt is used in your favorite iron blue toner with cobalt (III) chloride should be a good place to start.

The Colorvir kits contain zinc, iron and titanium toners of this same basic type; copper and vanadium toners are very similar. You can try nickel as well, and several other metals might be interesting.

Steve Anchell's Darkroom Cookbook, 2nd edition, has two cobalt formulae:

Light Green Toner (the longer the bleaching, the lighter the green)
Cobalt Chloride-----20 grains-----1.3 grams
Ferrous Sulfate----- 5 grains-----0.3 grams
Hydrochloric Acid---20 minims----1.2 ml
Water-------------- 2 minims---60.0 ml

Emerald Green Toner
Cobalt Chloride-----20 grains-----1.3 grams
Ferrous Sulfate----- 5 grains-----0.3 grams
Glacial Acetic Acid--30 minims----1.8 ml
Water-------------- 2 minims---60.0 ml

I don't know anything about units in "minims" or how they are supposed to convert to ml, but there seems to be a conflict in the conversion between minims and ml. Furthermore, there is no mention as to dilution factors which would be necessary because 60 ml is too small for a working solution.

Perhaps this will be cleared up in the third edition.

In the USA, Freestyle carries this stuff for $72.99.

There's also a fairly nasty MDB sheet that states "A hazard for drinking water sources when only small quantities get into groundwater."

Neat looking images, though.

Thanks!
