I love this one, even on a laptop computer screen, it looks like you got nice separation of the lower tones of the trees. I bet they're amazing in the fine print.

Made this out of one of the windows in my Sawyer Mills studio in Dover NH about 1986. This river originally provided hydro power to the textile mills which were converted to residences in the 1980s. When it poured over like this in fall and spring it vibrated the place so intensely that I could not make prints under the enlarger in my darkroom or time exposures in the studio. TriX with a 150 Schneider Symmar on 4X5.186416

I think a vertical composition may solve that. The area on the left is taking attention away from the water action.

Ended up with a new to me tailboard 8x10 after a departure from large format for a while. First image with new to me camera and my only lens. I'll be curious to see if I can live with no front tilt and a longish lens for a while. Certainly forces different compositions. I look forward to interacting with you. Lee

Hi Nodda,

Really like the orthochromatic plate. The rocks in the mid ground render the vintage look beautifully. Do you have a preference moving forward or is it subject dependent?

Nodda Duma
11-May-2019, 05:45
Thanks, Lee. TBH my preference is to shoot anything other than the Stouffer transmission step wedges! I shot literally hundreds of those over the past few months while refining the ortho emulsion and while tweaking the colorblind emulsion.

Aside from that I’ll be exploring the ortho plates to see where the formula needs tweaking. I like both, though..they are different and while there’s some overlap yeah I think the subject dictates the choice of plate. Going forward my guess I’ll be shipping out more ortho plates than the regular ones..the faster emulsion is more versatile. But the slower emulsion will always be around.

Shepperd's Dell is a small side canyon in the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon. Due to the topography of the area, it is difficult to photograph the falls.

On the way down from above the falls found a lot easier Grade 4.0 approach to the bottom of the falls.

Well, If you are referring to my picture, then many thanks.

This was two weeks ago, so you could not expect me to remember, could you? But yes, I think there is some back tilt to bring the foreground in focus.
My shutter was broke so I couldn't go slower than 1/15th so I think a ended up with f/32 or thereabout (and a red filter)

Ah - I was going to ask if you used a filter, then you answered my question - thanks.
There was lots of motion - even at 1/15th sec.
Yes, I was referring to your picture by the Vapst river. Am I not replying to these posts correctly? I'm new here and still figuring out how to do things,..

Well, I don't know about what is correctly, but if you do a "reply with quotes" it's easier to see what you are replying to.
Sometimes there is more that one conversation going on and things can get a bit intertwined.

Anyway, Takakkaw Falls seems very impressive from your pictures.

It falls like this for about a kilometer, splits and merges, with almost endless possibilities for new framings and compositions.

Thanks, Alan. The old heart wasn't behaving itself this day, but it wasn't a bad hike up to this point...once I figured out how to get here without bouldering or messing with poison oak. It was tempting to try to get to the plunge pool, but I needed more energy and a decade or two off my age! This was February...during a good spring flow, this might be a tough place to hang out!

Next time I'll go back with lighter gear for the upper set. This is 150mm lens in a Toyo 45G with Rollei infrared film, scanned from my Ilford MG print.

Here's Granite Falls at the Roosevelt Grove of Ancient Cedars in NE Washington.

I've been thinking about this for a couple days, and hope you don't mind a comment about this photo. The scene is delightful, with a complex geometry and varying forms. But in black and white, it gets jumbled for me and, at least at about an 8x10 size on the screen, is perhaps too busy. I would love to see this image in color, which I think can do a better job of separating areas of what are similar greyscale tones here with the addition of hue. Alternatively, perhaps a very big print would bring more to the image as you could visually explore it and see all the details and areas of interest without so much complexity focused in a small area.

This is something I really struggle with at times in places with a lot of visual interest, especially using wide angles. I've been trying to shoot color more lately with an eye for not just creative use of color but also as a way to express those similar "tones" as distinct "hues" instead. I'd be especially interested in the brownish hues I would imagine those rocks having playing off the green forest/moss and grey/white of the water and rock.

Well, you're right about the jumble and I'll admit that some recent color work here ("Yankee Boy" above, for example) is breathtaking. I'm self-limiting because of my churlish resistance to digital printing and I know I should just get over it. I used to shoot color and do R4 prints, but they would be embarrassingly dull compared to current digital outputs. As you suggest, larger prints help so that the viewer can feel more inside the image. I have been going up to 16x20, which is my darkroom limit. Thanks for the valuable input.

The above spot is a fun place to set up an 8x10 (no satire) -- lots of traffic, people photographing you, young ladies wanting to know what it looks like under the dark cloth, people almost getting hit by RVs that are just getting that burnt brake smell, people taking group photos on rocks just above certain death in the creek...that sort of thing. The parking areas are unmarked, so it can get quite exciting as people drive by, see the falls unexpectedly, and slam on the brakes. I stop there every time coming and going from the Park.

If one heads the opposite way of everyone else, doesn't mind some no-trail scrambling as one makes one way up a different creek, one can be alone in one's own paradise.

If people fall into the creek above, this is where they spurt out:

Thanks CreationBear! The print will be on Ilford FB MG glossy 30x40cm.
The environment it's magic and wilderness. The mountainside it's huge and the waterfalls are the focus point of the hike. The trail crosses just over the falls and than climb up straight on the plan until the summit. In the sky part you can see the pylons of the cableway that are the only human artefact of the valley. They are 1000m of slope 'til the hut. With the photographic backpack and the tripod (manfrotto 055b) it's a heavy hike. I can't imagine the infantry soldiers.. wow!

That should be just right!:) (FWIW, the heaviest fighting was in the Fall/Winter of 1944 south of the Po against the heavily fortified Gothic Line there in the Northern Apennines...incredibly rough terrain in its own right, but the war was essentially over by the time the Allies entered the Alps the following spring.)

Finally broke down and bought Lightroom/PS combo on Adobe. Been using Darktable on Linux for years. The "spotting" tool is worth the $10 bucks a month alone on Lightroom. Doing my best at editing.

I have Photoshop, but for this pic the "auto color" doesn't work very at all because the algorithm wants to average the colors. That works pretty well in a normal scene, but this shot is predominantly green and auto color doesn't handle it very well. I also use Darktable, which is a very powerful open source editing software. For your Natural Falls image I used a photoshop curve adjustment for the version I posted, but I also did it with Darktable. I only used the Color Balance module and am posting it here in case it's of any help to you.

Excellent, that's a great example of what I was talking about regarding "timing" here in the GSMNP--you found a nice window in which the riparian vegetation "opens up" under optimal lighting.:)

Otherwise, if you're back this way, the Elkmont area (reached by a side road about a mile back west of the Laurel Falls parking area) is a great place to explore as well. Little River "Trail" is really an easily walked gravel lane for about four miles (though if you spend any time in the streambed you'll have to navigate over car and house-sized boulders at times), and of course you can also bomb up a couple of Little River tribs (and/or up to Sugarland Mountain) if you're feeling burly.:)

The iconic Minnehaha Falls in NE Georgia. I took an 8x10 image here years ago, but have been meaning to shoot 4x5 so as to make larger prints. Very happy how the water flow turned out here. Shot with my Intrepid 4x5 mk4 and Nikkor 90mm f/8 on T-Max 100, a 2-second exposure and semi-stand developed in Pyrocat 1:1:100 for 22 minutes using the remaining solution after developing 4 rolls of 120. I used a very low tripod location to get the two large rocks on the left of the frame to line up in a V-shape without overlapping, and allowing the whitewater flowing into the corner to accentuate the foreground flow and turbulence.

Chamonix 4x5 w/ Schneider-Kreuznach Super-Symmar 110mm f5.6 lens f45@1/2s. Delta 100 processed in a Jobo.

I hard that Cattail Falls was "falling" so I scheduled some time off and drove 10 hours to BBNP to photograph the falls. It's . I scanned this on my Epson Expresssion 10000XL. It's been long enough that I don't remember what I did with it after the scan. It was cropped, I can see that. Thankfully I documented the camera, lens, and settings. I started shooting film again and I haven't done very well with documenting the shot. The trail to Cattail Falls is 2.6 miles. The walk from the parking lot to the trailhead (gravel road) is easy then there's about 750 of elevation gain via switchbacks. If you go too late in the morning you'll be able to "enjoy" the hike (aka death march) in bright, warm, sunshine. On the upside, it's rare that you encounter anyone.

To be honest, I think the scene deserved better than I gave it.
Here's shot of the setup.

This image is submitted specifically for critique, so have at it! It is an attempt to be less literal, giving more of a hint of the story rather than the entire plot.

In addition to any critique, can someone tell me how to get the image to appear a little smaller when posting from a URL? It seems that my images post (too) large, regardless of the pixel length of the longest side.

Gregg,
The light on the scene is captured wonderfully. Compositionally, the bottom and top of the image feel to me to be two images. It helps to create visual tension...and contributes to the vertigo feeling. I just don't know if that is what you are after. A crop as Merg suggests allows the light on the polished foreground rock to work with the flow of the water. Quite a different image.

Covid has taken me out for the rest of the month -- won't be able to travel north for your show.

Yes, the print has a good deal more tonality than I can manage to extract from the scan.
High Force is a pig to photograph, the chasm is deep, the rocks are a very dark colour particularly when wet and the only real way of getting light down in to the waterfall and chasm is to photograph the place at or around midday a few weeks either side to the summer solstice - everything a landscape photographer is told to avoid.

This isn't a very sharp shot but that's okay, I like the feel of it. I shot it with my Verito because I was doing a soft-focus image, and then wanted to do a sharp shot and the lenses I had with me were either longer or shorter to the detriment of the composition, so just used the Verito stopped down to f/32.

Yosemite Falls, from the trail below. I was shooting in the middle of the sidewalk and got so many people asking me questions, which is probably another reason it's not sharp because I rushed focusing while answering questions and making small talk. I really don't do well with that.

Do you know what the rock is there? Looks like limestone or dolomite, but hard to tell for sure...

It's dolerite, part of the Whin Sill. Molten rock was injected between layers of sandstone and limestone, and (being very hard and resistant to erosion) forms many prominent features in Northumberland and the north:

- parts of Hadrian's Wall are built along outcrops (the vertical north face providing a head start)
- Bamburgh and Lindisfarne Castles both sit on outcrops
- the upper sides of the High Cup Nick valley are vertical exposures of the Whin Sill

I visited High Cup Nick a few years ago and (rather stupidly) decided to walk up along the scree just below the exposed dolerite instead of along the path in the valley bottom. It probably took at least twice as long, and I picked a small lump of rock on the way as a souvenir.

I sat and ate a sandwich at the top, looking down the glorious valley, and got chatting to another visitor. He turned out to be something of a geologist, and I showed him my souvenir. Ah, you've got a bit of 'contact' he exclaimed. Sure enough the lower portion of my piece of rock was full of holes (much like Swiss cheese) where the molten rock had come in contact with the limestone and something radical had happened (vapourised it? I don't know).

The whole flattish area at the top is limestone (above the dolerite) and is full of sink holes and bits of 'pavement'. Fascinating place, it's on the Pennine Way route as well.

(Apologies for the temporary excursion 'off topic' :) )

Thanks, Peter! And no problem with the story - I love running into interesting people when I'm outside doing things.

In much of the western US, where I've lived all my life, the limestone and dolomite forms the resistant rock layers, as it is sandwiched between softer sandstones and shales.

Thanks Gary. I finally got to the other sheet I shot, with the lens at f/5.6 instead. I like the full soft-focus look in this image instead of the more vintage but still relatively sharp image posted before. This soft-focus look is what I was going for, as a personal reflection on Yosemite and the romanticized vision I had of the park taken from viewing the many famous photographs taken by Adams and others. It was exhilarating to visit the park and see/experience these famous places and reflect on this landscape, especially in comparison to our landscape here in GA.

Hadn't been to this location in years. There used to be a nice tree log at the bottom of this part of the falls, which had been there for many, many years, but it apparently finally washed down the creek. Would've been interested to see that flowrate when it happened! Look up the falls on Google and you'll see every photo has the log in it.

I also tried a new filter on this shot, a Moment CineBloom 20% diffusion filter. Been wanting to try one of these for a while and finally got one. I like how it opens up the shadows and gives a little bit of bloom to the image. Kind of like a touch of soft focus. I ended up giving the image about one stop less exposure than I might've normally, which seemed to work perfectly with the diffusion filling in the shadows whilst retaining highlights and giving a bit more midrange contrast.

I find the image quite satisfying as is, and think the log might have been one element too many for me - as it is, you have the foliage (rhododendrons, I presume), the layered rock, and the two different flows of water. The water coming into the image from the right, at the bottom, does a nice job of filling out that part of the frame.

Back in the 80's a friend and I climbed up the right side about 20 feet from the falls. There are more interesting falls about 1/2 mile up the creek that you can't get to now. Also to the right there was a narrow set of Big rocks that had a perfect water shoot you could slide down and a deep hole that had a rope swing. Parks department removed the trail since they could not get to anyone who got injured. Next time we/you go to Raven Cliff we should check the southern trail from the parking lot along Dukes creek - might find some worthy rapids.

Thanks for your thoughts Gregg. All the natural elements in a scene like this can be a balancing act and so I definitely can see what you mean about the tree.

Eric, I was surprised and disappointed the upper falls deck is still closed/destroyed. It's been like 6 years since trees fell on it, or more? Used to be a thin trail to the right of the damaged area which has gotten too overgrown to use, which might be what you hiked or remnants of it.

We crossed the creek to the right of the falls and there was a goat path that led north to the rocks. You could get there from the parking lot side too but it was a steep drop down to the rocks. here is a google maps from above. It must have been Davis Creek Falls we saw after climbing up Dukes. 230417
