Thanks, Zach!
Hi All. Haven't posted for a while - I have been very busy on other things. it's time we got these waterfalls back on page 1!
Here's a recent pic of mine from Carnarvon Gorge National Park in Queensland, Aust. This place is called Moss Garden.

Nice one Stef with velvia do you get a color cast did you have to correct the color cast in post processing.
Nice one Stef with velvia do you get a color cast did you have to correct the color cast in post processing.
Hi Dwarak. I hope all is well with you. We should all catch up again sometime!
I don't normally get a cast unless the film is massively expired. If anything a bit of a drift to cyan in the whites of water - that needs some correction.

That's right Stef good to know you don't get a cast with 9min from my experience with 35mm on a 30 sec exposure I get a bit of green cast which I can easily correct guess its a larger format so the results maybe different. The reciprocity for velvia is also so poor and yes we should catch up.
Well my last waterfall didn't arouse much interest. Lets try again!
This one is from Binna Burra in Lamington National Park in Qld, Aus.

Just amazing Stef this is one of the best waterfalls I have ever seen.
I think both are very great. But this last one has amazing clarity and color.

Nice shot Preston. I found the Yosemite waterfalls very difficult to capture. But I was there only for 3 days and in October so there was not a lot of water. Although the granite had a lovely golden sheen to it. I like your composition. I must get back there one day!
This was my rather poor attempt! In my defence I had to fight for space with all the Germans trying to have a swim!

Another waterfall of mine. Am I the only one who likes waterfalls?
This is Fern Pool in Dale's Gorge - Karijini National Park, Western Australia.
I am experimenting with super-panos. This is made by stitching 2 4x5" Velvia 50 frames together. For a massive 2.5x1m image!
http://www.steffoto.com/images/img107sm.jpg
These are two images of Nevada Falls I made in Yosemite NP this last Aprill 22nd. My images were captured at the same locations Ansel Adams made his images - (His were made 66 years prior to mine) - I don't make a habit of knocking off other's images - but I can't afford to buy his prints - so I capture and print my own.

Great one, Boinzo! Amazing colors.
Large format panos are very criative processes. I started with this one, also an waterfall:

Both Very nice! There is, or at least used to be, a big rock down in the mist area under Nevada that seemed to have a certain presence about it. I tried to work it a couple of times but never got it. Working on getting a waterfall at Shiprock but it's tough. They only last about three minutes.
Here's a couple of winter shots of Yosemite and Bridalveil falls. I never print them, but I gave it a shake while I was there.

Thanks! It does need work. I would like to keep some detail in the rock over-hang at the top of the frame and pull a hint of texture out of the sun-lit water. And I have to see how the light balances on each side of the falls when the image is reversed during carbon printing. Looking forward to working with it!

Preston: I haven't been to Wildcat Creek in Yosemite since I was there with a group in the Ansel Adams workshop of 1973! I'm sure I photographed that same area with my Hasselblad on a tiltall tripod. Nice to see it again.
Boinzo: I took my daughter up there in the summer and the crowd was amazing. My daughter dropped her sunglasses off that spot you are in and I worked my way below into the water to retrieve them. I came up with a double handful of dropped sunglasses! Thanks for posting. Hope you get another trip to the Sierra.

For a first attempt - well done - Hardraw is a difficult subject.
Hardraw is much better if you can catch it when lit by sunlight (from about 10:00 till 15:00 ~ ish - the sun moves left to right in the shot) - the column of water really sparkles in the sunlight and the overhang is emphasised.
For what its worth I have had many attempts over the years to shoot Hardraw and never yet been fully satisfied - although there are many worse places to spend a day watching the light change

Thanks for the encouragement Martin.
Which day in the year does the sun shine on Hardraw? Every time I have visited it has been a race to beat the rain.

I seem to be attracted to multiple images of yours, alexn...haven't been to the forum for a while, then had trouble getting in with my crummy tablet, but finally did. First pursuit was to add another subscribed thread and spend just a few moments looking at most recent posts until I can devote little time on the weekend. Voila! This photo caused me to linger...again, as with many of your compositions. Excellent balance, focus and contrast! Would be interesting in another season to perhaps see more vegettion, but rather unique also in barren rock walls. Good job! Are you professional? There's another of your photos I want to purchase a print of if so...I'll be back. Having been here only a few months, don't know the forum well enough yet to know if I can send a message to an individual or not...but I'll try not to annoy others letting you know somehow which photo., and getting response. Have a good weekend!
Two views of Horsetail Falls, Columbia River Gorge, Oregon.
Both with 11x14, printed on Kodak Ectalure (sp?) The vertical image was taken in the early evening, but before dark. Negative is very under-exposed due to Efke's high reciprocity failure, but I love the print. There is some faint detail and some texture in most of the black.

My first day back in 2-3 weeks, and I'm working backward in time, looking at some work I never got to the first time. This is worth repeating the image on the forum! Quite unique with the walkway! How stable is the walkway? Looks to be constructed like a long curving pier? Lovely! Natalie

Excuse that last post - Failed scan.. This one is much better however I think I really need a drum scan to suck the dark areas out better...
I think this is the best slide I've ever shot. however it is between 2/3 and 1 stop under... Its critically sharp and the colours and highlights look good to me (again, judging the slide, not the scanned image)

This reminds me of a beautiful spot in Zion National Park, north fork of North Creek, nicknamed "The Subway." Oh, what I wouldn't give to have all my prints, negatives and equipment back...I would post it for similarity! I posted elsewhere, so won't whine at length, but thousands of dollars worth of equipment alone, let alone other precious items, were in my car when it was stolen...lost an antique Graphlex I traded babysitting for as a teen for 4 years...amongst lots of other equipment...all photos/negatives from weekend field workshop in Sierras with Ansel Adams and his last assistant. *sigh*

Pdmoylan, I've been working my way backward to find the Gudda Gumoo Rainbow Waters original post by Boinzo so I can comment directly to her/him about this image that also makes my day. So far have gone back 15+ pages, being distracted by other lovely photos along the way, but still haven't found it. Not being very familiar yet with the forum, I might have to look for a way to do an advanced search by forum member and thread, but I don't suppose you remember the age or approximate date were you found this beauty? Thanks! Natalie

Thanks everyone for your kind words on my image. It's a truly remarkable place and privilege to have been able to interpret it in a way that speaks clearly to others. This particular waterhole is of enormous significance to indiginous Australians from the area and I tried hard to let their spirits guide me. I'm glad everyone enjoyed it! Love my rvp50 and 75mm! :)

Thanks Vaughn! Ya, it was really tight spot; I was right up against the edge, with trees that would have interfered with the composition right behind me. I actually did try and get some more distance between myself and another waterfall slightly downstream, using trees as a sort of frame, but it didn't work out how I had pre-visualized. C'est lavie.
Nice one EOTS. Great to see the waterfall thread come back to life!

Here's the Palouse Falls from two years ago at this time...
131075
A powerful waterfall – looks like you captured Palouse Falls in its late-spring sublimity.
Here's an unnamed waterfall, west of Palouse Falls, up in the Cascades.
131085
Fancy this – the chilly waters in this image flow down the Yakima River, while those of Palouse Falls flow down the Snake River. Later, the two rivers enter the Columbia River at about the same place, coming in from opposite sides. Then it's through the Columbia Gorge, into the Pacific, up to the clouds, and after rain and snow in the mountains, down to the two original falls once again. An endless journey...

Why two exposures?
Hi Stone,
that's because of the subject contrast range.
Had no negative film with me.
So I took one exposure for the foreground, in which the water is mainly white,
and one for the water, in which the foreground is underexposed.
Best regards,
Martin

Thanks for trying to explain to this poor Neanderthal, but I'm still not understanding.
If you made two exposures you're still going to end up overexposing one area it's just like making a longer exposure in general, unless you did something different like using some kind graduated density filter to one portion of the image?
Sorry if I'm being slow on this.

@Stone,
ckagy, Rory and Old-N-Feeble are right!
I exposed two sheets of film, one exposed for the fast water, one for everything else.
Then drum scanning, loading both scans as layers, aligning them and blending them together.
That is, water layer above main layer, aligning them as much as possible,
adjusting brightness to match roughly, but making sure not to blow out most of the detail of the water layer,
then starting out with an all-blocked mask (= black mask) over the water layer.
Then painting white areas into the water layer mask (only in parts of the photograph where the water is fast/white).
Etc ...
Best regards,
Martin

^^^ Not if done with reasonable skill.
Yeah, and especially not in this case.
The water has no detailled texture, so when blending you favour the stones/moss/etc

This one I made out the window of a studio I had in a converted mill building in Dover, NH in the 1980s. I think I used a 4X5 Linhof view camera and a 150mm Schneider Symmar-S lens. Tri-X film. When it poured over like this after heavy rains in the spring and fall, I couldn't make time exposures in the studio or prints in my lab due to the vibration.138537

Well, we have moving water, but I figured I'd start something specifically on watefalls themselves. That and the fact that the other is getting pretty long as it is. This collection of waterfalls is from Ricketts Glenn State Park in Pennsylvania. A few may look alike as I shot them at different times of day and from different angles. All images were taken with a Horseman Woodman 4x5 field camera on a Gitzo tripod/head combo with Fuji Velvia 50 and 100. Thanks for looking!

Not as beautiful or inspiring as other's efforts, but here are two I shot recently high in the mountains near the Grasberg mine in Papua, Indonesia. Very cloudy all the time. Both were shot on 4x5; the first with a Fujinon 135, and the second with a 360mm Tele-Xenar. The second shot is the view across the valley from my nephews apartment.

If you don't mind me asking, what filter are you using to convert that CDU back to daylight use (85b?), and also what ISO are you using for the film (either metering with or without the filter)? I ask as I got a box of CDU II cheap and wouldn't mind a decent starting point. The colours you have in that shot look pretty good, whatever filter it is you're using.

Thank you. I've tried both filters, 85A and 85B. Pictures taken with 85B can't be color corrected with Lightroom, but 85A gives almost OK colors, very easy to fix. My sample of CDUII has ISO20 (ISO12 with 85A). Check out my other CDUII shots https://www.flickr.com/photos/jaz99/tags/cduii/

Hope it helps.

The stuff on flickr looks great, it's reassuring that decent colour is achievable. I think I have an 85b filter so will have to try that first - am I right in thinking the 85B is just a touch warmer than and 85/85a? Thanks for the info.

Gjain waterfalls in Iceland
This site was a bit of an adventure, requiring a few km drive down a road that really wanted a 4x4, not our little Skoda. The steep path down to the falls, though, were uncharacteristically well groomed and lined with large bricks for plenty of traction. I would have loved a view about 20' to the right but would have been standing in the middle of the river. My iPhone had died by this point (and I forgot my analog stopwatch at home) so I guessed at the reciprocity time and manually counted the shutter time.
Honestly, I've been a bit frustrated with Ektar film. I've gotten a lot of super wonky colors when scanning it - infinitely harder than scanning Provia (which I've shot about 10 sheets of). Obviously I need to spend some time on the forums here and find some suggestions.
Camera: Wista 45DX
Lens: Rodenstock APO Sironar-N 210mm 5.6
Film: Kodak Ektar 100
Exposure: ISO 100, f45, 12 seconds manually counted (decided on 2 seconds after metering, 6 seconds with the polarizer)
Movements: Some front fall, circular polarizer
Developer: Tetanal C-41 kit, mixed chemicals at the end of their suggested life, processed according to instructions

It's a gorgeous image, and I recognize your trouble scanning negative film. It's just more iffy in terms of color correction than transparency film, which is really straightforward. Maybe if you bump the blue channel (or dial put yellow) a bit in this one things will improve.

A couple things. One is the scan software probably matters more in color negative in your ability to use. I find epson scan much easier to use for instance than silverfast, though not as feature rich. I'm not able to view this on a calibrated monitor and it is significantly different between my two screens. On my laptop's built in screen which probably doesn't have any bias, The balance does not appear to be universally off which means that you may need to apply a curve to each channel to correct this, not a mass blue-yellow shift to levels. To my eyes the shadows appear to be shifted slightly, but are closer to neutral than the highlights. The mid seems to have a bit of a blue shift. The highlights appear to have both a blue and cyan tint. So back to the editing software. I would take your red channel and pin the middle to 128. I would pull the highlights up slightly until the cyan starts to go out of the whites. If the shadows shift, pull them back onto the neutral line. Then go to the blue channel and pull the curve down slightly in the mid and highlights until they look more neutral.

The name of this waterfall (Cascade?) escapes me at present but it is along the 120 entrance to the valley. It wasn't flowing as dramatically as I have seen it in previous years but I shot it anyways just to see what it would look like printed as a cyanotype.

Thomas -- yes, Cascade Creek. I have a similar image from the same spot. I had a couple young good looking gals under the 8x10's darkcloth with me at one point.

Yep - Cascade Creek. Every spring I stop and check it out and I was hoping for a dramatic flow this year but either missed it or it wasn't flowing as in years past. Here's another one from the same trip:

I printed this a couple of days ago as a split-toned Kallitype for a black tonality and am glad that I made that toning choice. This was a 25 second exposure on 8x10 Delta 100 with a 300mm Nikkor-W - the "red D" one. It's also posted in the Kallitype thread.

I hiked in to Cattail Falls in Big Bend National Park on Wednesday. I drove 8 hours to get there. I went straight to the trailhead. I took my Chamonix 4x5, a 110mm Schneider-Kreuznach Super-Symmar f5.6 lens, and a bunch of holders, 1/2 of which were loaded with Portra 160 and the other half with Ilford HP5. I made two images with the 4x5. One color and one black and white. The color image is still in the holder. I hiked in the following day and made a few more digital images. I had it to myself on the first day. The second day there were 6 people there. Cattail is normally a sheen of water with a gentle trickle. The desert had a wet August and September.
I also shot video with sound on both days. You can see the difference in flow in less than 24 hours. I've seen video from last week and flow has dropped significantly from then to when I was able to go. I'll link the video below. If that's not cool the mod can dump it. It's not edited. Just two stitched together. I use a monochrome picture style in my DSLR and apparently, for video, WYSIWG. For stills the images revert color.

An oldie (1986). I spent about a week hiking around Lake Waikaremoana, NZ with the 4x5...it was nice to get off the bike occasionally (5 month bicycle tour)! This is Korokoro Falls, a short side trip from the track (trail) around the lake.

If you any other photos of this fall, it will be about the same view -- the rain forest did not allow for any other distant view.

Also, intresting your comment about the whites being blown out. I notices the same in several long-shutter-time waterfall exposures, even if the meter reading was well within the possibilities of the film. They look quite uniform and very close to pure white in my pictures as well. I think that part of it is because in a long exposure the white foamy parts of water evens out a lot, again something that we cannot notice with the 20-ish frames-per-second of our eyes. I still have to print those but I am curious to see if they turn out well in print also in a hybrid analog-digital workflow.

Here is day 2 (and last day) of my little series on the waterfalls of the White Mountains. There's also a second, more experimental shot

Pretty impressive shot.
and oooh.. velvia!!
I put together a small story about some waterfall shooting in the White Mountains (NH). It's my very first experience with large format and color film, after some years of inactivity.
Comments welcome, I hope at least somebody can enjoy and even better get some inspiration.

I am, definitely inspired to take out my 4x5. It's been a while. Waterfalls are some of my favorite subjects too. Thanks!

Nicely done! Reversal film is not easy to use successfully in the woods.
This is a photograph is from 2010. I don't think I shared it here before.

That's a beauty, Joe!
I don't usually use longer lenses shooting waterfalls but I gave it a try last time I was out. I like having a foreground and background relationship rather than a tight image of the falls.
Anyway, I set my aperture so as to get a shorter shutter speed to catch the water a little crisper than the soft creamy look I usually get. I think this was at 1/4. Taken with a 240mm G-Claron.

I like this one a lot, and prefer the water this way. A trick I have yet to try is divide your exposure into 4 or 8 segments. For example, 1/4=4@1/15, or 1/4=8@1/30.
Bryan, I like it as is.
Not the usual milky way of water of nowadays!
This looks really nice. The exposure time, for me, is close to perfect. You can still tell it's "water." :-)

I really like that one, Corran. I prefer to see a bit of texture in the water because it shows fluid movement rather than looking like textureless fog. The overall textures and tones are lovely. I like the composition too, though I usually prefer to see where the water lands.
Thanks guys. Yes, the water (especially the arching bit to the left) is what interested me and I'm glad I did a shorter exposure time.
Steve - I tried doing the multiple exposure trick just recently. Check out the second image in my last post in the medium format b&w thread. I did 4 exposures of 1/4 each to get the requisite 2 second needed time. It came out pretty well.

Bryan I wondered about that. That shot has more depth/contour to the water than one done the standard way.

From the details left in the water, it looks like a sub-second exposure indeed... not very common in large format in the woodland. Beautiful, thanks!

A slightly higher elevation of Nancytown falls. I am standing on the dry rock left side of the prior image, slightly in front of the center cascade. I used a 65mm lens to capture the foreground and to emphasize the creek receding into the woods.
I first thought I would crop this image mid way but the foreground details show the character of these falls.

Nice!
Yep, very nice Peter. The underlying tones in the rock are nice - often the wet rocks down here render a bit too light in tone. I've been experimenting with polarizers sometimes in that situation.
