Are there enough people who shoot cityscapes and urban scenes to warrant a thread display some images?
I have been enjoying the Tree, Bridges and portrait threads very much.

Last time I tried something far tamer that that, I got a 37 dollars ticket for not being on the foot path.

Did you request a permit from the city or just took your chances?
(for a small fee for the permit, Montreal is willing to bend the rules a little, they have a film permits division now, I hear it does very well for them).
Great picture.

Great picture.

I've never had a problem working in downtown but I rarely setup on private property and I never setup where I'll be blocking foot-traffic on public property (around here you can get into trouble for being ON the footpath). Los Angeles has a film permits organization that can help people with city permits and arranging access but it's really not practical for opportunistic shooting because you need to set dates and arrange insurance in advance. I usually don't decide to go out until 4:00 in the afternoon if you know what I mean. I also couldn't see myself spending hundreds of dollars every time I want to expose a sheet of film. However, for certain projects permitting is the only way to go.

For this shot I was setup where the sidewalk 'ends', so to speak. The whole area is probably technically closed to pedestrians and there are signs warning you not to walk onto the overpasses. Nonetheless, around sunset these overpasses are major commuter routes for transients which results in interesting opportunities for making new friends. The reason i needed a tall tripod and step ladder was because I had to shoot over the chain-link fence that doesn't really keep people out of the bushes. So while I was a foot from the roadway and up high the ground was level and I could get up on the ladder between pulses of traffic which was unnervingly close.

I do this kind of thing all the time and I almost always see LAPD, or some other form of security and the only time I've had problems is around the Port of Los Angeles.

Hello Edwin,

great image! I just checked your webpage and to say the least I am astounded by the urban landscape that you have made, it is great. Congratulations!

I have made a few exposures of my local urban landscape (Hermosillo, Mexico), without much success. How do you deal with carrying expensive equipment downtown at night?

Hello Hector,
Thanks for the compliment. It makes me feel better. I took some cityscapes into a local gallery today looking for a venue and was told that "anybody can do that".

As for using expensive equipment downtown all I can say is that you have to take certain risks to get some shots. You can either not work in less safe environments or try to do whatever you can to minimize the risk. I almost always plan my shots ahead of time so I can do my scouting during the day without any equipment and then return when the time is right with no more equipment than I need. I often bring a friend who is bigger than I am. I am generally finished shooting 30 minutes after sunset when there is still a good deal of regular foot traffic and so I don't feel like a total target. I also keep an eye on LAPD crime statistics and try to stay educated on gang culture and their territories. There are some areas that are to risky for me to even consider.

I also think that a large camera is an object of curiosity so people are too busy wondering what it is I'm doing to think about mugging me.

Here's the last one I did from East LA. While I was set up waiting for the right ambient lighting a guy pulls up on a motorcycle and asks me for directions to Inglewood. The directions were a bit complicated so it took a while. In the meantime a really scary looking dude walked up the block and checked us out and then went back down to the next corner. I think he thought I was selling drugs on his turf but when he saw that I was minding my own business he lost interest.

Beatiful work, Edwin. I too admire your site and am glad you take precautions especially around some of the neighborhoods you work in. What do you meter on to take some of your shots on your website?

It depends on the situation. Most of what I've been doing lately is using ambient light balanced with the artificial lights in a single exposure. I've done quite a few double exposures in the past which is a bit more complicated. For the single exposures I just meter off the sky. I did tests to find out what exposure works well for the artificial lights and then I spot meter the sky until it is dark enough. That can be a bit tricky depending on what effect you're going for and whether you are metering off the blue or the orange/yellow in the sky (in which case you need to overexpose by as much as two stops). I generally meter off the blue sky with no compensation which gives a rich blue that isn't too dark. You can overexpose by a stop to produce a more daytime look or underexpose by a stop for a really deep dark nighttime look.

I think metering the sky is always a good idea if it's in the frame because it is easy to visualize what it will look like considering any exposure compensation you might need or choose to use.

How big or small to qualify for 'cityscapes'? Don't want to have to drive 4-500 miles just to get one for this topic.

How about anything that has a few buildings, maybe some graffiti, a bridge or overpass is optional, a rotten, half falling down factory would be a double bonus!

Steve and Allen, thanks. I'm very amateur on landscape and don't yet know whether to go for HDR (I am not a cloudie) or stick with no-problem B&W.
What I did learn, doing Genoa , is that if you are shooting cityscape in first light, you need to do it in the winter. It is hard to get a janitor to open up and take you to the roof at 5am in the summer.

Nice pic Spiky.

I have not yet had the chance to visit Shanghai, I would very much like to see it at least once in my life. I complain about the way Montreal is growing and the way the cops have clamped down on our way of life, but when I look at these images, it just boggles the mind!

Shanghai Municipality:
The 2000 census put the population of Shanghai Municipality at 16.738 million,
Area: 6,340.5 sqklm

Population of Canada:
31,612,895 (2006 Census).
and is 9,976,000 square kilometers, or 3,745,574 square miles in area.

Montreal:

As of 2006, Montreal had a population of 1,620,693
482.84 km2 (300 square miles).

You’ll have to squint to see it! Still nothing? Okay, here’s a "binocular" crop to help.

View from Olympic Mountains – looking East across Puget Sound, to Emerald City below. On the horizon are the Cascade Mountains.

I tried my hand at shooting large format at night for the first time tonight. It even started raining 15 seconds into the exposure, but I stuck it out and I'm glad I did. I'm encouraged to do this a lot more now.

Spiky,

very nice! I am shooting an interchange project too, but mine is really ugly and does not offer such nice views, concrete cancer is the order of my pictures!

Yes, they do sway a lot under load. I spent a day under a bridge with the Mohawk steel workers, and after a while, they taught me to close my eyes and guess what type of vehicle was was passing over head by the way the bridge moved! :(

What kind of scanner are you using ? If you lay the film on the scanner glass, you will get Newton's Rings.

Search this forum and you will find people who make their own film holders, using a plate of glass suspended over the scanner glass, using thin coins.

Epson scanners have their point of focus, just above the glass, so it works nicely and you solve two problems at the same time.

Count me among the offended. I agree the framing and mood are very nice--except for the half-a-car stuck in the bottom-right. OTOH, I especially like the forms of the corner of the building against the sky above the statue's head...

The statue is George Washington taking the oath of office as the first president of the United States on the steps of Federal Hall.

Stephane,

The photographs that you are posting that you made in Essaouira, here and in a couple of other threads, raise an interesting question. As you know, Essaouira is being developed as a major tourist destination, and there is a significant discrepancy between what your photographs suggest about the place, the photographs being on the romantic/nostalgic/pretty end of the specturm, and the greater reality of the town.

If you care to comment, I'm interested in knowing what you think about this issue, which I think faces anyone who wants to make photographs in Morocco and no doubt lots of other places, including North America and Europe. It was an issue that I had to come to grips with when I was in Morocco a couple of weeks ago. In my case, I resolved the issue by going in the opposite direction, making photographs only of what struck me as real life modern Morocco. Interestingly, I made this decision definitively in Essaouira. At the opposite end of the spectrum from Essaouira, the current development of which struck me as somebody's idea of transplanting the Costa del Sol to Northern Africa, I took a pass on photographing some of the incredible examples of Moorish/Andalusian architecture that I visited, because I felt that I didn't understand them. They may be the subject of a second trip a few months from now.

I'd be interested in knowing whether you felt the same tension pulling you in two different directions.

r.e., I need to see your photos to understand fully what you are talking about...
I had a rangefinder for street/every day shots, not carefully composed and thought about. I was shooting a 8x10 sinar and I did not want to do "documentary" photos with that format, but yes you can put them into context. I'll put more photos as they come.
Morocco is not much developed, growing crops is done the old way (you can say most of everything is organic), even the oil is pressed with animals moving the milling stone. Their way of earning money is through tourism and welcoming elderly people in old age home (14 millions of retired french people in Morocco today).
You probably experienced differently. I rented a fantasting house (riad) along the city walls where the waves crushed at high tide, making the house shake. For me this was magical. From the ground floor to the terrasse on the 3rd floor, the stair case was packed with full-body portraits of women in their cloth from the 1920s. Morocco was overwhelming for me, all my senses were alert. I almost cried when I had to leave...
In the end I dont know if I answered your question. It is rather something we can talk about around dinner...

Thanks Stephane,

Your response is very interesting. We did indeed have different reactions to Morocco.

I look forward to seeing more of your photographs. My own are 6x7 and can't be posted here, although I may be back there in about April with a 4x5.

One small point; the whole population of Morocco is 31 million and it is unlikely that 14 million of that is French retirees. Newspaper reports say that the number may be as many as 30,000, and certainly Essaouira, with direct flights to Orly and booming construction of hotels and apartments, is one of the places that is courting them.

I live in a really small town, this is as city as it gets! This is downtown and only my third or fourth LF image ever! I haven't even tried to crop out my camera! This was taken before all the snow arrived here in Bangor, Me.
A ebony rw45, 210 rodenstock, provia 100f. I scanned it on the epson V700. All this is very new to me, its like the first time I saw a print come to life in the tray so many years ago.. Thanks again to all the people on this format for the encouragement and help...still a newbie.

I'm a fan of Spiky's work so I hope I can say that I think that this photograph is not among his most successful. To me, it underscores the importance of mobility to street photography. On the upside, I think that the decision on focus - to shoot at f/3.5, isolating the fellow in the black T-shirt from the rest of the scene - was very much the right one. I'd be interested in knowing whether Spiky pre-focused on the general plane where this man is walking, which presumably would have required a stand-in, or whether he zone focused. I also like the sense of movement from motion blur, and the opposition of the direction of the man in the T-shirt to that of the rest of the pedestrians (save, interestingly, the heavyset woman in the background just to the right). However, I don't think that these visual effects make up for the fact that the photograph lacks content. If this had been shot with a 35mm camera, I think that it would be a discard. It would be interesting to use this lens on a hand-held camera, which would provide the kind of mobility that is so useful for street photography.

There is currently an Ebay auction for the non-T* version of this lens. With three days to go, bidding has reached over US$1700.

Essaouira, Maroc in the early morning before new year eve.
Scan of an 8x10 contact print.
When I did the test strips, I switch on the lights almost as soon as I dunk the paper in the stop bath. This was bringing density to an otherwise featureless white sky, but I did not realize it immediately... Then when I was happy with the overall look of the print, I tried switching on the lights with the final print. This one (fake cloud) came out nicely. I have to perfect the technique so I can predict better where and how large the fake cloud would appear. Anybody tried this before?

PViapiano,

Great pic, for some reason it makes me feel like I'm looking at a photo from a different generation. Great work!

-Brian

Well I think it works nicely - it draws the viewer into it. It would work however - as a square picture just as well (cropping some of the bottom). It's a matter of preference really, and perhaps continuity with a larger group. Sometimes it's nice to throw in a slightly different format.
