Back in April, Scott Kathe initiation a thread titled “Exposure for white turbulent water”. I found moving water a fascinating subject.

Samples of member’s works would make an interesting thread. Here is my attempt.

I've always been torn between trying to get crisp water detail versus the "cotton candy" look of longish LF exposure times. I'd love to experiment with large, battery-powered strobes, varying the ratio of flash to ambient light contribution to the exposure, but there aren't too many waterfalls around Rio Rancho. ;)

No, the yellow/gold is a reflection of a maple tree on the opposite shoreline. The sun hits the tree in the late afternoon and gives a nice colorful reflection. Jim

I was curious about how you determine shutter speed for various moving water subjects. Moving water shutter speeds can be difficult to select; I had an idea to carry my digital camera around and taake a snapshot of the water first at various shutter speeds, and then preview the images to see which speed is best.
Has anyone tried this?

I know I probably do not warrant my photos being up here with the likes of yours, but what the heck. Might as well. Taken with a Horseman Woodman 4x5, Ektachrome 100G Readyload, 150mm f/5.6 Nikkor lens on a Gitzo Bassalt tripod. Scanned with an Epson 750. Both photos were made at Hocking Hills State Park, Ohio. The first one is Ceadar Falls and the second was Lower Falls at Old Man's Cave. I decided to go with the pano format as it was a bit more appealing (At least to me) visually. There is no need to excuse yourself. Good compositions. The pano is very nice in that format. There's something peaceful in the shots which I really like. I for one would consider it a very very good day if I came home with those shots in my film holders. Keep up the good work Brian.

It is a little ambiguous viewed at this size. It's actually sharply focussed but softened by the moving water. What you're seeing at the top are sodden leaves and other stuff beneath the surface. And you can see the wooden stick both above and below the surface of the stream. I'd just set this up and was ready to take the shot when a dog ran up and splashed through the water. I swore as it ran off, but then realised that the water was settling into a swirl which looked much more interesting than before!

Hi Jim,

What an awesome pano .. may I ask how you got it

Thanks!

I used a Betterlight scanning back and their Pano adapter. This works by centering the array (3 pixels wide, 6000 high), and then rotating the camera. I shot without the IR block filter, so that makes the sensor both visible and IR light sensitive (which accounts for the color).

<SNIP>...
I've always been torn between trying to get crisp water detail versus the "cotton candy" look of longish LF exposure times. I'd love to experiment with large, battery-powered strobes, varying the ratio of flash to ambient light contribution to the exposure, but there aren't too many waterfalls around Rio Rancho. ;)
I have heard that one can achieve various effects by using multiple exposures but on thinking about it there would be some intricate arithmentic involved.
EG:
A scene requires EV10. You use two exposures at EV9, one at wide aperture/fast shutter, one at narrow aperture/slow shutter.

It would get worse if you wanted to use only 25% of the fast shutter

OldBikerPete
15-Aug-2008, 19:44
Well, I've done a few. I tried to post others but I'd have to make them too small and too low-quality to bother. BTW these were all a single long exposure.

Click ''Post Reply'' then click the paper clip symbol for adding ''Attachments'' then click ''browse'' and then go find the location of your image on your PC, once you find it, highlight the image file then click open, finally click ''upload'' then ''reply'' and that should do it.
Sometimes it easier to find the image first and have it waiting on the desktop of your PC, if you see what I mean.
Good luck

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

On the latest shot I had gone to the coast to try and catch a blazing sunset at a new favorite location. It was 95 degrees and clear in town, and I figured the coast would be perfect. As I drove over the last ridge to hit the coast - BAM! Socked in fog and mist, 65 degrees, totally limited visibility. It was like someone flipped a switch.

I searched around and found this location as an alternative to what I had planned to shoot. It was fading light at the end of the day, and yes it was a pain to focus the shot!

The muted colors are from the dim, flat light and Astia.

Thanks! I used a Schneider 90mm. (Two 4x5 exposures with left and right rear shift. That 8x10 Shen-Hao is calling my name, but I can't afford her!) Film is TMAX 100. This shot made me understand the need for a center filter. Another 300 bucks, for a FILTER!? Gadzooks! You can fix it sure, but it would be kind of nice if the whole frame was even and then add vignetting if it helps. A pricey luxury, though.

There was a very light drizzle during the shoot. This crick claimed my first piece of camera equipment; a mere lens cap, but I was still bummed. Better than dropping the lens in the drink I guess.

Here is another from the same location. Not bad, but a shame about those blurry tree tops. I like what a shorter-than-usual shutter speed did with the water. I think this was 1 second. My meter battery died so I had to use the "Uh, Well…Let's Try This 16" rule.

I took this Yesterday, in the calm after the squall moved North. Provia, 4x ND soft grad, polarizer, 90mm, 15mm front fall, f32-and-a-half, one minute (while being careful not to touch the camera - I was shivering). I think I'm starting to get the hang of this. Starting, and looking for constructive criticism. Thanks.

Thanks for the critique.

It was lit by an opening in the clouds. Same for that over-exposed bit of rock being washed by waves. I'm actually not talented enough with PS to be very good at burning and dodging yet.

I did use a Cokin 4x6 ND Grad filter to try to control the latitude, but after the shutter was tripped I saw it'd gotten conked out of level and was tilted down on camera left (probably when I re-cocked the shutter - I'd forgotten to remove the darkslide the first time, and I was in a hurry because the light was changing fast and my fingers were getting impatient in the cold. But I don't think that had the effect of lightening the foreground, though, because it wasn't tilted a lot, just about 15 drgrees.

Here’s some snow melt on a cloudy morning in the Cascades of Washington (near the Goat Rocks Wilderness).

To add some life to the water, I tried adding a 2-stop ND filter which increased my exposure from ½ second to 2 seconds. But I think it gave me a little more water-blur than I wanted – it looks more like static spray. :(

Perhaps a 1 second exposure would have been better.

The snow fell on zone 7-8; the white water was zone 6-7; the wet log was zone 3.

(Earlier, I saw a pitch-black squirrel cross the creek on that narrow ice bridge. Later, the ice crumbled into the water and floated down stream…)

A year ago I loved this type of image, but my tastes have changed. So now I'm not convinced there is much artistry here, but it's one of the few presentable images I have right now, so here it is!

Osaka 4x5, Fujinon 240A, E100VS

Other details unknown as I'm bad about taking notes! I'm also not great at sizing and sharpening for the web.

Latest images, taken with my new Technikarden.
Number 1 is Lossit Bay, on Islay. Both these images were taken on the same day in fact.
Number 2 is Port Charlotte, also on Islay looking to Jura with the paps of jura cloaked in cloud.

Number 3 is on Skye, looking east from the side of the Black Cullins. Taken in Nov last year with my old MPP as I had sold my Tachi and was hunting for a replacement.

Osaka 4x5, Fuji 240A, HP5+. I failed to write down the shutter speed, but I think it was 1/2 sec or 1 sec. I took some shots with my DSLR to determine the shutter speed that I wanted. (Blasphemy?!?)
