Executive Office, Price Tower, Bartelsville, OK

From my return trip a couple weeks ago from Wyoming where I worked as a photographer for the summer.

This skyscraper is a Frank Lloyd Wright design inside & out and originally planned for NYC in 1929 but ended up being built by an oil tycoon in OK during the 1950s. Such a weird structure everything was built on 30, 60 and 90 degree angles.

Cool... nice picture.
I've always thought why architectures of this day to build mostly frail buildings using planks. This is in stark contrast with European countries that have always built almost exclusively solid rock. For the longest time, European architecture has used the materials that were available locally. Here in Leipzig, for example, buildings are usually made of brick, because solid rock and straight wood had to be brought in. Depending on the area, Germany has/had local building styles dominated by stone, brick, wood, adobe, straw or reed grass, etc.. Stone just seems to withstand the centuries better than many other materials.

I prefer a reasonably dark hotel bathroom over a changing bag any time. Even if a room is not completely light tight, it's better than the dust from the cloth touching the film. I'm sure somebody will speak up and differ, but your dust problem seems substantial. I like your images, though :-)

Whilst rummaging through some old files, I ran across this one from my early explorations with the 8x10 a couple of years ago. I was rather taken by the contrast between the convoluted form of the tree and the precise, nearly neo-classical brick facade of the former O.M. Edwards Factory here in Syracuse.

Though its not too bad here, I have since learned how to manage the bellows sag on my aged Korona a bit better.

Hi everybody,

My first architecture image with the Shenhao 4x5 in 4x5 format and all together the 5th image with this camera.
I am still not used to everything but have a lot of fun.
Here you can see a picture from Shenyang in China of the rather new Grand Theatre Hall.
Everybody calls it the diamond and I am sure there are a lot of brilliant pictures hidden to be explored.
So I will definitely come again and see what I can find.
This particular image though is not convincing me so much and I like to ask for some ideas about interesting composition ideas on such kind of building.
I know the light and contrast (I added some in LR) was also not the best, so this could definitely give a boost as well but what makes me more headache is the composition...
Especially with the newer architecture, where strong perspective could make sense, I am still lost when I stand in front.

Looking forward to your comments and feedback.

Thanks and best regards, Miguel

BTW: This was done with a 90mm, giving me almost no movement possibilities anymore.

Another day, another try.
This time I could not get further away and could not get vertical lines.
The front rise even with whole camera point up and tilt both front and rear did not work and I reached already the limit of coverage.
At the end I gave up and just gave a bit of front rise together with camera point upwards.
Nevertheless I am happy with the result.
BTW: Trying to correct the lines in LR looked very awkward...
There seem some light leakage or processing error on the edges but I kept it as I thought every altering over there would also do more harm to the whole image than improvement.

Tipps and Comments welcome to improve future images.

Nice image Moogie.

Sometimes maintaining verticals, with a whole facade composition, is not possible due to space or access limitations. It comes down to camera position, available lenses and desired composition.

Given that the whole facade can not be composed in this situation, to maintain verticals, a detail view of windows and doors might be nice. Or an orthogonal view of the main entrance. Especially at night or in the blue hour.

I find that composing tall buildings from foundation to rooftop is difficult in Manhattan and Chicago, so I need to choose either detail views or more distant views. Isolating a single tall building is often not possible, even with a wide lens, because the necessary camera position is not available.

Angling the camera up sacrifices vertical lines but can be interesting. Keep shooting and you will develop your style and build skill with your camera and lens suite.

Thanks Chassis, Next time I will bring a longer lens and see if I find an interesting composition in a similar situation.
Good recommendation. Brings me to another idea that maybe also panoramic images might work with that kind of buildings...

Here the second one from same day like the image before.
My first time I used the Lee polariser. Obviously something changed between adjusting and exposure, so need to practise that, even though I was pretty sure not to have moved the filter after adjustment.
In this case the covering lines I even like as the building itself looks like a rocket already, hence its nick name...
Also this time I had some heavy clutter in the sky, not dust, and was impossible to remove completely as you can see. I already worked for hours to achieve this status.

In my opinion, full correction of verticals is un-natural and not desirable, except if the picture is taken for purely technical purposes. In my eyes, your picture is perfectly fine.

BTW: Trying to correct the lines in LR looked very awkward...
Last time I tried, the top of the building looked like it was squashed; true correction involves both making verticals parallel, and a vertical stretching of the top of the building; done not in any random way but following rigorous geometric rules (changing from one projection to another). I've had satisfatory results using a panorama stitching software... for just one image, e.g. Hugin (free). Such software allows you to change from one rectilinear projection (the one of the exposure) to another.

Havoc what would it look like with the 75mm and a full frame north facing orthogonal composition on a grey day?

I haven't any idea! In fact I'm not even sure I understand 100% what you mean. I'm just a beginner. Do you mean the camera facing north (then I would be at the viewpoint more to the left of the photo) or the north face of the building (from the beach)? Yeah, you'll need to go to toddler level, English is not my mother tongue and I'm not a photographer, more a collector using cameras I like. But grey days are easy over here.

As the building itself is light grey I fear it will go up into the sky.

I'm not sure if this is considered archetectural. I usually like to take pictures of people, or dogs. But I wanted to have a photo of my room in my apartment. That way, some day, I'll remember how zen it was.

I've used up all my PMK after many many years. I wanna go back to d76 1:1 but mixing is a pain. I wanna try HC110 dil H. I think it'll be similar to d76 1:1 no? But below is ARista edu 400@200, 90mm Orbit lens, fstop somewhere between f/8 and f/64. Shutter was no clue. I figure photos are more important that all the details.

I shot this on Fuji 160-S with a 150mm Apo Sironar-S on a 4x5 Toyo Robos and printed it at 11x14 of Fuji Crystal Archive way back in Mach of 2011 and forgot about it until I rediscovered it last weekend and paid a local photo shop $5 to scan it as it is too large for my aging Epson 3200. It gets matted next session.

That's one of my themes for SF. I think it died off before it's time, and contemporary subjects rather than timeless subjects are a way to hint that I'm not just a copycat of old pictorialists.

One would think that Mercedes Benz would have approved a better example of modern architecture than that muddled mess. It looks like a pool of blue pain bounded by a concrete rim the same color as the dead grass that flanks it drawing the eye to a gaudy red structure.that rings as a broken swastika flanked by two quirky electrical transmission towers.

BRAVO for capturing such an exquisite example of ridiculous modern architecture!

According to the Fuji documentation the ones with the lettering inside the barrel on front have an image circle of 305mm.

I show the diagonal of 8x10 as 325mm. That's corner to corner of the film, not of the image.

I always use that because image sharpness may degrade near the outside.

I think tomorrow night I'm going to go out around midnight or so, to try some photos without having to dodge people asking me to take a photo with their phone or whatever. I fully expect to have the police called on me if I go that late, it's that kinda town, but whatever.

Anyway, here's the one b&w I shot this evening, of the Dahlonega Gold Museum and old courthouse.

Bah, thanks Steve. If you look carefully, you'll see that it's a little tweaked. Getting something like this aligned is hard, at least for me. I tried to correct everything, but it seemed like the more movements I used, the weirder things got. Eventually, I gave up, zeroed everything out, used a little front rise, stopped down, and called it good. I was afraid the fog would burn off! Thanks again.

Howard this is awesome. Did you have enough field of view to set the camera level for the non-convergence?

Thanks. No, I had the camera on its side, using the side tripod socket. In that position, and with the lens board back within the box, there is only room for about 4mm of shift, equivalent to rise in that position. So I had to tilt the camera up to take in the top of the building and correct some of the distortion in Photoshop after scanning.

Yes, I was pleasantly surprised by those two exposures. I incident metered Fuji HR-U @ 200, which was a bit generous, but I figured added reflectivity from snow and stone needed to be taken into account. They were shot with a Speed Graphic & Optar 135mm @ f45 around 1/15s with full front rise. The PC-MC was diluted at 1:1:200 and developed in a manual tank for 12 minutes with slight agitation every minute. Scanned the negatives with a V600.

I've only recently started using pyro developers, but it seems to help tame the contrast inherent with xray film and has a small but tangible effect of making the emulsion a bit less fragile.

I'd like to do some darkroom enlargements, but my workflow for 4x5 in this case would involve wall projection via a cold-light graflarger, through the blue film base, onto VC paper, all in a space of about 12ft^2; i.e. a nightmare. Inkjet or digital negatives for contact printing are an option, but that just feels like cheating :p

Wasn't going to take this photo, because everyone who's ever been to this island has already made the same photo, and it was mid-day, but it was my last sheet in a Grafmatic so I said why not?

Ended up accidentally having a couple sheets of HP5+ in the Grafmatic along with the TMX I loaded, so accidentally shot and developed this wrong. But after some dodging and burning I ended up with something that worked fairly well.

This is the historic Tybee Island Lighthouse, Georgia's "oldest and tallest" lighthouse. It's an especially nice place with some old buildings accompanying it. You can tour the lighthouse and go to a museum but I've actually never been, as the island isn't all that interesting and is expensive to park at, etc.

I had one more sheet of Portra 400 and couldn't help but shoot these cute little beach houses. Or, as the sign on one of them said, "Condiminimum." Taken on Dauphin Island, Alabama.

Good suggestion Jim,

I just 'ordered' Alexa to play Pete Seeger songs. Amazing how many references to my local area in them.

Sounds great on my huge 1960's speakers.

I will say 'Thank you' to Alexa after I say 'Alexa stop'.

The new Politically correct speech is a must for elders.

Regrooving. :)

This is an old house which is thought to have been an African-American church, located at the Twelve Oaks Walking Trail (http://ltmcp.org/twelve-oaks-walking-trail/) in Ocean Springs, MS. I learned of this beautiful site just recently and was happy to visit it when I traveled to MS on business last week. I also just found out a couple days ago that they offered an Artist Residency which I really hope they offer again and I will apply. I could photograph on this trail a lot, and it also is part of the Old Fort Bayou Blueway, so lots of opportunities for canoeing. There was a really ugly sign next to the stairs that was bright white and said the property was monitored by "Ring." I almost didn't take this photo but then I had the idea to simply drape my darkcloth over the sign. Voilà!

Hi Alan, thank you. My mistake, this should be in the 6x7 category, hand-held. The difficulty was waiting for the footbridge to clear of people, a long wait! I'll post it in MF category. By the way, this particular vantage point disappeared with the recent museum remodel.

Here's a flatiron located in downtown Oakland, CA:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49498851507_b9db75fc23_o.jpg

Shot it on a Sunday morning with 360mm lens on a Toyo 81G and printed as a salted paper print. The building is still there (since 1914) but the trees are gone and a Pete's coffee shop now occupies the front (vacant when I took the photo) with a walkway lined with tables and chairs extending from where I stood to make the photograph to the front edge of the building/coffee shop. It's located at the interseaction of Telegraph Avenue (on the left) and Broadway the right. I've been toying with the idea of printing it as an albumin print - just mixed a liter up - but the decision is out on that.

It is amazing. My dream is to do a stitch of the entire facade. Drive down the length of it with the tripod in the back of a pickup while photographing. There's a really interesting luncheonette in the middle of the building too.

Hehe. Well I got the lens for taking landscapes, but I always end up taking architecture photos in London.

Couldn't find a way to capture the whole S-curve on the crossing with the 58mm :( Ended up with this close-up of the walkway...

Well seen, Merg. That's a lot of fun.

Thank you, Philip. I used this photo on the cover of my brochure when I hung out my shingle as an architectural photographer in the '60's. It worked, architects saw something slightly different from what they were used to receiving. Of course, those were the days of mail, telephone, and knocking on doors. They were good days, although the next meal was sometimes in question!

original negative has a reflection caused by rear window of my vehicle, off to my left and between me and the building just out of line of sight of the camera, I never saw it on my GG when focusing or composing. The reflection is a building about 100 ft to the right and behind the subject. My camera position and the angle of my parked Expedition was just right.

Hi everyone, I'm still kind of a beginner in large-scale photography so any suggestions are most welcomed! Here's one of the photos that I had taken during my Hungary - Austria trip. It's Wotruba Church located in Vienna. It's one of my favorite pictures from the album since the church has a very interesting design. I was doing a gig for a Budapest real estate (https://tranio.com/hungary/budapest/) company back then and have lots of architecture photos from that time but I could work on only a few of them yet.

I used a red filter on this - but it was the first time I ever used one so I got my math wrong and underexposed the shot. A little recovery in photoshop did wonders - but I have yet to go back and clean up the bottom.

Dear John,

very nice picture. However, the name of the building is not "Casa Milo", but "Casa Milà" (see this wiki entry (https://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casa_Mil%C3%A0), or this one (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casa_Mil%C3%A0), if you prefer English over Catalan ;) ). It is better known among the locals by the name of La Pedrera, which is the Catalan word for quarry. Originally, La Pedrera was a pejorative nickname, due to the rough appearence of the building.

I think this might be the first architectural picture I've taken with my LF gear! Mission San Xavier del Bac near Tucson Arizona - Intrepid Mk4 and Schneider 210mm Symmar-S on FP4+ developed in Stearman Press Ultra for Large Format. If I remember correctly, I had front rise and shift to frame it up how I wanted, but that was about it. I could set up far enough away that I didn't need any major tilts or swings. Looks a little off vertical to me now which is irritating as I'm damn sure I had my bubbles level!

Verticals are "way off". Bubble levels are not reliable to line up for an image like this. Use a good gridded ground glass, this will go a long ways to preventing this from happening. Levels are no where accurate enough as much depends on if the building is level relative to camera placement. An accurate grid on the GG can be used to evaluate lens distortion as camera movements are applied. There is also the question of how accurate the levels are on any given camera.

Cross at the top got cut off a bit.
