Okay, so tonight I wanted to play around with some new strobe gear and ended up making an image that I liked. My 4x5 camera just happened to be the subject, but it got me to thinking..

I figure that we are all proud of our cameras in one way or another. It may be your first camera as you just start to learn, it may be that shiny new toy that the gearhead in all of us gets excited about, or it may be a trusted companion that's been with you for years. Regardless - our cameras are our conduit to making the images that we care about.

So here's your chance - show off your baby!
(LF cameras only, of course)

So far so good, I use a kirk 8" long board, it works very well. Adjust level is just a few seconds. :D It has bigger knobs. But locks on both pan is not big enough. And the friction control does make a difference.

I am waiting a 3530s to replace my 2530 tripod leg, as the center column is the weakest link of this set up.

If Arca-Swiss simply distributed a photo as cool (and basic) as that one, they would have sold twice as many Cubes.

Now I can really see why the Korean (and the Arca) head is fairly expensive -- pretty amazing hardware.

But I agree, the 8x10 and the head seem a bit much for a #2-series tripod!

Daniel,
Chamonix 045 with a ries tripod kind of weird, a super light camera with a heavy duty tripod.
The knobs on the geared head is pretty big (I think it is bigger than Arca's). So far everything is smooth.

Hi Asher,

Here is a link to all it's movements. I'm not being glib, I just could never do justice to all the camera can do by trying to list here by myself. Suffice it to say it is by far more camera than I am photographer. It's a strange story how I came to order one of these that I won't go into here but its somewhere here in the archives.

http://www.ebonycamera.com/cam.html

As to lenses I have four--

a 30 inch Dallmeyer RR
a giant Jarmin Darlot that weighs about 13 lbs
a 1000 mm Germonar (sp)
and the one I am going to have my two children 'study' instead of a liberal arts education--550 Schneider XXL Fine Arts Lens.

All of this was purchased with found money that has long since disappeared and I have to feed this beast on my own dime. No small task. When it works though it'll light your face up. Rare occasion with my skill.

Here are a couple of more pics. Sorry I don't have more.
If you're ever down in the Southeast around the Carolina's drop a line and play around with it!!

best,

Monty

Thanks Monty. I was there in Uncertain, Texas for a photo workshop with True Redd. Being from the western Southwest where the light is (mostly) clear and seems to run forever, I felt as if I had stepped on to a different planet - hanging moss and tree limbs and thick, humid air. By the way, two months ago I sold a 32x41 inch print of the Caddo Lake image. As a large print it feels as though you could just step into it.

My Shen-Hao 4x5 in Yosemite after a 7 mile hike to get to this spot due to major road work...

You must be kidding.

The entire length of the Valley is barely more than 7 miles.

You could have parked on the south side road near Cathedral Rocks (where you probably saw a number of cars belonging to rock climbers parked overnight) and walk less than half a mile to that spot like I did on two consecutive days this spring.

It's no longer an issue, anyways, since the north side road opened just in time for memorial day.

2-Jun-2008, 15:03
Kirk, Yep I was shooting an Arca-Swiss when we went to Utah, but had been shooting a Toho before that. I don't have a good photo of the Arca, hence the Toho photo. (And, next week I will be downsizing the cost of my large format habit by selling the Arca and buying a Chamonix, which I have on order. I'm having to finance the Colorado River trip somehow.)

A quick google search revealed this photo (http://www.classic-camera.com/gallery/view_photo.php?set_albumName=Classic-Camera-Com-Wood-Field,-Studio-View-Camera&id=Century_Studio_Camera_No_4A) of the camera, in its complete original configuration.

There appears to be one for sale on eBay right now too. See this link (http://cgi.ebay.com/8-X-10-CENTURY-4A-STUDIO-CAMERA_W0QQitemZ220241401316QQihZ012QQcategoryZ15248QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem).

My Wehman and I this past March, "off the beach" along Lake Michigan. The picture was taken by a duck enthusiast who asked me whether I wanted a copy. The focusing cloth is a birthday gift from my oldest daughter, who made it for me last year.

This is a great thread and so many beautiful cameras.

A while back I had an itch to make a camera for fun out of existing bits.
A friend in Geelong, Michael Wynd, gave me a Nagaoka focussing base and I had a 26" Calumet monorail. Naturally they needed to sit on a tripod at the same time.

I wanted something solid but light and at the same time sturdy. It had to break down quickly and be usable with lenses from 90 - 500mm.

The bellows and standards from the Calumet monorail take about 30 seconds [8 screws] to remove and the monorail frame is put aside for use as a studio camera base if you want.

Make a couple of wooden base plates, drill them out, get some bolts and knobs and about 3 hours later the whole thing is ready to take a test pic.

Without the extension the range is 90 - 240 and with the extension 210 - 500+.

All up the camera weighs 6 pounds and breaks down flat for a small backpack. From backpack to use takes about 2 - 3 minutes or less.

This was originally only going to be proof of concept but it works so well it "may" get a lick of paint if it is lucky because I'm not doing anymore on it, except use it as my main camera..

And one for Audioexcels (Mike) showing the beautiful Nikkor 450/9 M on the Arca Swiss with the telephoto belows (middle of bellows supported by an adjustable brace designed by Rod Klukas). This lens is just an incredible performer, almost as good as the Rodenstock 300/5.6 APO Sironar-S, in fact really difficult to tell the two apart. I was quite surprised given the price differential.

Finally I get to see the Wehman. :)

Hang around long enough and you'll probably get to see another one. If I had to live with one camera for the rest of my life, this one would be at the top of the list. I really like its portability and ease of use, as well as its rigidity. I'd really like to get another one later on, when life straightens out a little.

Here's my ultimate flea market find. I just couldn't leave it on the shelf for the $20.00 asking price.

Somebody went to a lot of work to cobble this together out of a graphic back and strap lugs plus a 65mm f6.8 Wollensak Raptar WA, and a really neat plunger assembly to fire the shutter.

The only problem is that it's rigid and the focus is set for about five feet.

As weird as it is, I don't have the heart to modify it for a better focus.

And, I love the paint job...kind of a cross between moss green and puss yellow!!!

Just the 240 g-claron and 450 Fujinon-c for now. That should cover the majority of what I need. I'm usually pretty good about working with the focal lengths I have with me at the time. Last Sunday morning at China Beach in San Francisco.

I was making a long exposure of the the surf and rock when I noticed some movement - the girl proceeded to walk into the scene, turn around and then walk out. Fortunately, I was able to stop the exposure, recock the shutter and then complete it after she walked away.

Turns out that she was a model on a professional shoot - when I left, the photographer apologized for interrupting me, but it thought it was rather rude of him to walk in as I was working and simply assume ownership of the area. The temperature was cool, so I suspect the model was very uncomfortable.

I'm certainly going to give it a try :) I did get a bit of leaning background in one of my panning shots, but I was so far away from the car I was panning very slowly. Next time I go, I'm going to use the most slim shutter width, and get as close to the car as I can so that I'll be panning the camera faster. Then if I pan slower than the car, that should give me both leaning in the background, and leaning on the car in the oposite direction, like Lartigue's shot! :) Once I've nailed down that, then I'll have to find a nice background to go with the action shot, a large fence would probably work, with all the polls.

In any case, this image that you posted was the same image that gave me most of my inspiration to pick up the 4x5 speed in the first place, and I'm just now getting around to taking it to the track! I may not do as good as that shot, but I'll have fun trying :-)

The photo following was taken by my father in the late 1950's with a hand-held Super Technika III at the Pt Wakefield circuit (which was closed in 1960, I think). It was taken on the start/finish straight so the Maserati 250F would have been at some speed. I scanned the contact print, which is the only shot I now have from father's 4x5 work, about a week ago and as you can see from the enlarged head shot, the driver's left eye can be made out through the goggles. So panning 4x5 is not impossible.

OT, this is my first post although I have been lurking for some months.

Out-dated or not, I just love the color in this photograph. It makes the loss of the Polaroid medium seem all the more profound.

hey Jim,Will,,,,

Yes, I just heard about Polaroid and I'm not at all happy ...

I'll start with an old Gandolfi Universal. This one has a 5x4" spring back on it; I don't think that's original. I still haven't changed the lens that came with it to something less anachronistic than a 150mm f:4.5 Xenar.

Ole Tjugen
6-Aug-2008, 07:04
Next Gandolfi is a 10x8" Traditional.

I use a universal iris lens mount on it, on a roughly modified original (to the iris) lens board. It may not be pretty, but it works. Both the iris and the camera are perfectly happy with a 300mm f:5.6 Symmar.

Ole Tjugen
6-Aug-2008, 07:07
Yet another Gandolfi: This is a 4x5" Variant Level II. I was looking for that lens yesterday and couldn't find it - that's where it was hiding! :D

Ole Tjugen
6-Aug-2008, 07:11
Not another Gandolfi, but another British camera:

The Carbon Infinity. Here shown with a 150mm f:9 Germinar-W, and a 47mm f:5.6 Super Angulon XL. That lens is easily focussed to infinity with the regular bellows, but I have bag bellows as well if I need movements too.

Ole Tjugen
6-Aug-2008, 07:14
Yet more cameras:

Here's the little Speed Graphic Anniversary - 4x5", so it's only small compared to some of the others. This one also has a universal iris mount, here shown with a Thomson Brothers casket set lens. It's nice to have a camera with focal plane shutter!

Last but far from least: A German "Reisekamera" in 24x30cm (9.5x11", just about), made most likely sometime after 1880 and before 1940.

You get the drift now? This one has a universal iris lens mount too. Since the "normal" focal length for this format is 360mm, I put the 360mm f:5.6 Symmar Convertible on it for the pictures.

Here's my Hobo 8x10 point and shoot. It's an early one - long before the Fotoman PS came along!

I've adapted it to take Sinar panels. It is pictured with a Nikkor-SW 120/8 lens. This is in a reversible lens mount so that it packs away flat in a backpack with the lens inside the body for protection.

I also have 90mm and 135mm lenses for it if I want some vignetting.

The Nikon 120mm lens is so wide on 8x10 that I've had to make a slot-in gelatine filter holder for the rear of the lens.

Fun to use!

Thanks guys, but here the praise should go to my wife... she managed to get a decent shot of me and also the target of my concentration ;)

As to your wanting a Chamonix 5x8 camera, well for example when I see Erik's Gundlach 11x14, I want a camera this large also. It would be a joy just to look at the groundglass, let alone on the processed negative, the details, the clarity, the tonality. The Chamonix is not a perfect camera, but is reasonably close. For me, it should have been larger (that is, for larger format size). But it's better to be content with the tools at hand - if they work well for their purpose. I have now forced myself to stop looking in the FS section here, to stop going through photographic section on eBay. Because anytime I look there, I see something I want, or worse, something I need. :D

(But on the other hand, I have never made so good photos with my Pentax 6x7cm, when that was the best tool at my hand. Not a single one...)
