Not the best shot, but here's my Kodak 2D Whole Plate camera on it's maiden voyage, out in the Redwoods at Rockefeller Grove, Bull Creek Flat. Met some other LFPF members, had a great time, and was really glad I got it together and brought the 2D.

Forgive the mess on the table in the background. Combination of me fixing camera stuff and cleaning it off.

300mm Tessar applied to the front of the camera with a lens board that's too thick and a lot of electrical tape. I'm of the mind that you do what you've gotta do, you know. Next weekend is my son's birthday (he turns 3 on Halloween, yay!), but the next weekend will be spent with my grandparents, in their house, getting their pictures taken. Yay for the monstrosity!

Just picked this Eastman Kodak No. 2D up today!!! Came up on Craigslist and it turns out the seller was in my neighborhood, just 15 blocks away. He collects cameras and had purchased this from UC Berkeley about 30 years ago and had it in storage ever since. Kind of interesting, it came with two sliding tripod blocks, one labeled back. Not sure why there would be two.

I'm not very tall. I wanted to get a little higher than that and didn't have a ladder or stepstool with me. Denting the roof doesn't really bother me. I just pushed it back out once I got inside and it's fine.

I really like it, its my first experience with a folding camera, i previously used a Cambo monorail. I currently use a 135mm Caltar and a 210mm Nikkor. I keep switching back an forth on my next lens being longer or shorter. I carry it in a Lowepro Flipside Sport 15L AW, which gives me room for the camera, 2 lenses, 2 grafmatics, filters, dark cloth and light meter. Its a pack the I can comfortably carry around all day.

The 2 gripes i have with the 45N-2 is that the carbon fiber ground glass protector is really finicky to put on and take off, and since the front tilt and rise are combined into the same locking knobs it can be a bit of a trick to adjust one without the other. It just takes getting used to and is by no means a deal breaker with the camera. The weight savings and compactness of it has enabled me to take it where i would have previously not considered taking a 4x5.

My modified Rochester Optical Company Standard whole-plate camera. A previous owner gave it a big brass bracket that allows front tilts and swings. He apparently rebuilt the base, too, as it does not match any illustrations I've seen of the original. Legend says it was found in a barn somewhere in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. The original no-name RR lens (about 13" f.l.) is shown. I usually use it with modern lenses - the RR is really hard to focus wide-open. It produces a decent, not great, image stopped down.

C. D. Keth
23-Jan-2013, 10:37
That's quite handsome, Peter. Does the front standard alteration function well?

Peter Gomena
23-Jan-2013, 11:06
It's adequate. Because of the configuration of the original front standard, I don't have a lot of front fall, but I don't really need it. The front swing is a little touchy because the brass bracket is anchored to the bed with a single bolt and a big wing nut. I have to be careful that it's good and tight. I added a lock washer to the setup to help with slippage. Front tilt works very well. As shown, the bed is about 18". There's another 6" of rear bed I've detached because it just gets in the way. I find I don't need more bellows extension for most of my pictures. I'm pretty sure this originally was a studio portrait camera. It's a bit delicate, and it's not built the way typical field cameras of the day (circa 1895) were configured. It produces excellent, sharp negatives with modern lenses, I just have to be aware of its quirks and foibles when setting up a shot.

Laura, nice looking setup there. Question on the Berlebach, which model do you have? Also is the camera mounted directly on the tripod, (can't quite tell from the photo), do you have the build in leveling ball? And finally how do you like the setup? I'm asking because my girlfriend needs a tripod for her 5x7 and I'm tiring to figure out a good setup for her.

I bought this Zone VI rebranded Tachihara in November as a kit for a steal of a price and in fantastic condition. The local camera store was selling it and it was evidently part of a late photo enthusiast's estate. And then last week, I was perusing the local Craigslist when I happened upon a Zone VI tripod for sale! The tripod seller had never heard of the fellow who had the camera; he'd just bought a bunch of stuff in a lot from an auction. So although the odds are not in favor of this camera having been sold with this tripod, two Zone VI products are now reunited and it feels so good.

87991 87992 87993

P.S. Anyone know the model of the Bogen tripod head pictured? There's no model number on it anywhere and it boasts a 5/8" screw socket.

lenser
25-Jan-2013, 16:54
Terry,

That head looks like the Bogen (Manfrotto) 3047 which was the standard head that Zone VI offered for their tripods. It was available with this size and the 1/4x20 for the mounting plate. By the way, those handles are brutal on one's hands, especially in cold weather. Eventually, Bogen got the idea that a much easier to grip handle was preferable and switched over to nice rubber coated and bigger diameter handles. I replaced that old kind a few years ago for under $30.00 for a new set of three. You may still be able to do that and I recommend it highly.

Congratulations on one heck of a find on both items.

Peter: I'll have to look but its a Gitzo Carbon Fiber I bought more than ten years ago. I tried a bogen head, which was awful, several Gitzo Ball heads, which were too crazy to get leveled and now use a hefty metal Gitzo #4 that I bought for nearly nothing off ebay. Used a Zone VI for a while as well. My 5X7 is either opened in a hard case that I can stand on, or collapsed in a F64 pack for hiking. I don't hike that far, but have gone to some extreme places. Longest was from Yosemite Valley floor to overnight on the Diving Board next to Half Dome and back the next morning...three times. The camera and pack never give me any problem but the Bogen tripod just about killed me every 250 yards or so. (forget carrying a Zone VI. Even with a sling the Bogen was just a terrible piece of gear to carry- heavy, cumbersome and always plotting to gouge or wedge you off a tight place. The Gitzo Carbon fiber legs are MUCH better. Light. Friendly.
Just went out and looked. The sticker is nearly ground off but I think they are Gitzo 1349s. When I was a child I had a Gitzo metal tripod of about the same dimensions. I liked it, though it could bite a chunk out of your neck when you set a tripoded camera down and unfolded a leg without getting clear. Weird injury that made it look like you were dating the wrong kind of girl.
The head is heavy but very stable. Full contact, not QR. I put the 8X10 on it. I don't try to work in much wind. IMHO the head is more important to stability than the legs. Like the 60s, I think it's hard to get high enough, at least for landscape work, so I frequently have it strung out to the limits.
Now you know everything I know, plus more, I'm sure.

Thanks, Robert. I own a Zone VI "lightweight" that is a bit much to carry very far and is rough on the shoulders with my old whole-plate camera on it. Functional, yes, comfortable, no. My old Gitzo Reporter is pretty gimpy after 30 years of use and abuse, so it's time to find one tripod I can use for everything, whole plate, 4x5, Hasselblad. I don't hike any of this gear more than a mile, but it can be a miserable mile sometimes, and I do want more height on occasion.

A mile! That's usually a mile back as well! I don't go very far but I'm often going up something steep. Carbon fiber tripods are quite a gift! Lots of them made these days, not just by Gitzo. I've got a little old aluminum Tiltall as well but the view cameras don't get on it.

Shootar,

Are you aware that there is a secondary tripod socket under the strap handle. On the Crown I used in high school, I never noticed it for about four months of fighting gravity with the tripod configured as you show it here, so I was just curious. I'm pretty certain that the Speed has the same 1/4x20 mount.

I do, but I use my speed handheld so often that the QR plate started digging into may hands so its easier for me to just rotate it on the head.

Isn't there a bellows repair tape, or can't I just throw a dark cloth over it and be good to go. What about night photography? If it's dark enough out I should be ok, right.

Now in all seriousness I have to admit that this is not one of my prouder moments on ebay. Of course the seller could have let me know about the split wood, missing teeth on three of the pinion gears and I should have seen the missing and the none original knobs on the front standard. Oh and the bidding was a little fierce, but I won dammit.

Anyway, knowing that I was never going the repair the camera myself, I sent it off to Richard Ritter. Should be getting it back soon and will post an after photo of the camera when it arrives.

In Horseshoe Park? :)

It took this at Rocky Mountain National Park (40.372901, -105.600843) this big fella had about 25 does that he was protecting. I set up my 4x5 about 4 feet off of the side of the road. Hopping that he wold eventaully come my way, and boy did her get close. at one point he was only 5 feet from the camera, of course I was back about ten feet. The camaera is a Wista M450 and has a scale on the side of the rail. Previous to him getting close I had prefocused different twigs and brush and noted the scale. When he got past me I quickly focused, pulled the dark slide and hopped for the best. I did get the shot but the light was getting low and my shutter speed was a little too long and the picture did not turn out TACK sharp, but never the less my little digital did save the day.

It took this at Rocky Mountain National Park (40.372901, -105.600843)...my little digital did save the day.If those coordinates are from your digital camera's record of the shot, I missed by only a little bit -- that spot overlooks Moraine Park. If the coordinates instead represent results when searching for Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP), I might still have guessed correctly. Horseshoe Park is another RMNP valley, nearer the Fall River entrance, where rutting elk can also be viewed in full splendor. "Park" is a term for valley in addition to meaning the type of protected recreational area we commonly associate with that word.

Nature of the vegetation, including species and color, as well as the animals' characteristics are, in my experience, extremely unique to the RMNP area. I owned land in Estes Park for 27 years, always planning to retire there, so these things jumped out at me immediately when looking at your image. Last year, amid growing concern about the elevation when elderly, I sold that lot and replaced it with one much closer to sea level in Bartlett, New Hampshire. The White Mountain National Forest and moose rut will serve as my photographic material after relocating there. :)

C11.17 prototype at Shiprock NM (http://www.flickr.com/photos/joseph-jb7/9153159225/) by joseph - jb7 (http://www.flickr.com/people/joseph-jb7/), on Flickr

Taking the first picture on the new (prototype) Carbon Fiber and Walnut packet loading multi format 11x17 folding studio camera at Shiprock, New Mexico at dawn yesterday. Desert testing. Didn't go too badly, got some valuable feedback from the exercise. Loaded with 11x17 Kodak X-ray film. The camera was designed to take advantage of the image circle of a lens, to shoot 11x14 and 7x17 without reducing backs. An interesting side effect is the aggregate format, 11x17, which is easily cut down from 14x17...
The smallest size you might consider using on it might be 8x10, perhaps to shoot the odd sheet of colour film on your holidays, for example. Though I forgot to pack the little bit I have...

I see there is some Fuji 20x30 colour film for sale here- quite tempting, I'd get 4 sheets of 10x15 out of one of those...

11x17 Folding studio camera? Does that sound a bit odd? Did any studio camera fold? This one has been designed to accept heavy lenses, although it hasn't been tested with one yet. I have placed a 9.25kg 36" f/6.3 at the end of the front extension without appreciable deflection, though I haven't mounted it on a lens board yet - a 9" board, Century size. I have one waiting for it, that Eddie Gunks very generously donated to the project last year, in New York.

The camera has front tilt and swing which can be controlled from behind the back, although with a lens that heavy, I think only downward tilt will be available, if any. I'll be back in Dublin in a couple of weeks and will try it out then-

It has an integral dark cloth, suspended from a closing lid which is necessary for shutting off the back of the camera while making an exposure; the focusing screen must be displaced to allow the film holder to register.

Bellows, up to 43 inches available on accessory rear extended tubes, around 36" in this configuration. I should be able to use a 90mm for circular images too, on the recessed board in the picture- though movements are restricted below about 250mm-

Anyway, first look, a lot of testing to be done yet, although the film loading into the camera has passed with flying colours. The camera was designed and built in Ireland, but desert testing has shown up some shortcomings in some of the materials and adhesives used- I just wouldn't have appreciated how cruel the sun can be outside of our temperate little isle...

It's not finished yet, still some work to do- I'll be writing a more in depth article after thorough testing and proving- though that might take a while-

Thanks again to Robert Langham for his thoroughly prepared dossier on Shiprock- an inspiration- though your position as master of Shiprock is quite safe- it's an impressive rock, but I'm not a landscaper, even if I find myself in a good one from time to time...

Your Sinar F (version?) looks in very nice condition.
Is it just me or have Sinar prices seen a recent cooling period? I noticed a couple years ago that they had started rising again with many other well known professional brands in the film camera group. Recently however I have found some very low prices with several Sinars going without a single bid on the auction site ...and they were listed at what I thought were already quite reasonable/low prices.

I believe the lens is of the rapid variety. This camera has been a joy to operate.

Lee - if you are at all interested, let me know. These both will be put on eBay within the week here probably (just making a couple test images to sweeten the ad). I will of course cut you a deal ;).

Pat, yes I think the Harvard lens is yours, it's been kicking around for a little while as I hadn't decided what to do with it. I was thinking about getting it repaired for a while. It turned out to make exactly the same image as any of the other AE's I've used, so I decided not to bother (if it was even possible). It might be 5% more "glowy" if anything.

Randy, I'm not quite to the level of "mass-manufacturing" yet ;). I first built one for myself, learning everything there was to know about the internal workings of the Kalart RF and of course how to modify the Speed. Upon using it a few times, the 20+ lb camera really put me off, so I sold it. I was surprised at the level of interest it received on eBay, and I still get hundreds of hits on my blog from the one entry I posted about the camera and some images. I then happened upon a couple more lenses on eBay for cheap and started to build more cameras, and they sold faster than I could keep up. I bet that PAC would be some impressive glass!

Here's a quick test Fujiroid I shot in the waning daylight earlier. Wide-open, of course, focused using the RF (!). Just a digital photo of the print:

Your Aero Speed cameras look great!

I've been at the former Loring AFB this weekend. It was a big air base vital to the strategic air command and it's fairly remote. Old bases' security and upkeep gets kind of in limbo after it's retired and before it's sufficiently redeveloped. I wandered around for a bit, and thought it would be fun to shoot some 8x10 LF there, some 4x5 LF, some MF, and some IR digital... I'd like to return sometime when it's not so hot out.

Never thought I'd get to use a jet blast shield for a photo prop. B&J 8x10, kodak 305 portrait. I did shut the car door for the photo; this is when I started to pack up.

I had black rubber wheels under the stand and those were completely cracked and shot. I don't believe these were the originals as those are indeed iron wheels and these are a bit smaller so the floor jack point could touch the floor.

Rather than replacing the whole stem caster, I just replaced the wheels with some that I had laying around. I don't particularly like the blue color (skateboard ...) so I'm happy for this link so I can get black or grey. I do like the skateboard style wheels as they're on bearings and they turn real easily ...

Nice! How much do those go for? I see quite a few every now and then. Do you need to modify the back in order to fit regular holders?

I bought this one unseen, I'd placed an order for a 13x18cm German Reisekamera that needed a focus panel and some brass fittings but was cheap.£79 inc postage (94 euros/$127). It had been sold but left online but this one looked similar folded up so there was confusion between the two partners in the company :D They offered me this one instead at the same price and said I could send it back if not happy. They normally sell for considerably more.

The camera did have a serious issue but it took me less than half an hour to repair. There's a block in the base that slides to lock the base firmly when it's opened for use, some wood was missing. other bits cracked, but I grafted in new pieces and glued it all up. I will give the camera a good clean and re-french polish it.

I may well make a 10x8 back as I have two 10x8 cameras and plenty of DDS (film holders) but I'll also get some 18x24 holders.I'm not sure yet what type it takes. I'll also make some new lens boards.

Cambo SC2 with Apo-Ronar 240/9, and a loose 8x10 rack from a older Cambo model.
And yes, the Apo-Ronar does cover 8x10.

My 11x14 (co-owner with Jim Graves) with his Suter Basle Aplanat B No.6 on it (about 480mm/f8) in my backyard. Took a photo of one of my boys with it right after this -- hopefully will develop the neg this weekend. I did not have the f45 waterhouse stop inserted all the way in, so I am curious as to the effect of not having the hole centered will be.

We've got some nice rocks at the beach, but I figured a found fish head would make it a little more interesting. Perhaps I'll have a good negative in a couple days to share.

There "about" section has one part in English that I think means they they are a distributor for ORWO?

And I was able to find a list of some films but no sizes or prices... I don't speak German, thank goodness for cognates!

There isn't any information about this film on the Wephota site and even at Lumiere is the information not much help!

You didn't mention the Lumiere site before and as I said I don't read German so I didn't know what was an advertisement and what was a link to buy, it wasn't very obvious so I just clicked spots to see what happened lol

But now I know "Blatt" means sheets ;)

Wephota has been selling rebranded stuff from other manufacturers for long years (they sold papers from ORWO and Forte and who knows what else. I'm not sure who makes the ORTHO film (Might it be the same that ADOX sells?), but their ISO 100 is by all accounts rebranded Fomapan.

The only time I used this camera was with really old Polaroid Type 669 film. The result looked more like something from the Hubble Space Telescope than what it was: a dandelion in my backyard.

I really need to get myself one of those fancy wooden tripods, not only do they look freaking cool, but they also are probably much more stable than my current tripod not that it's very bad just that I'm sure those are better.

Oh. The picture of my camera setup was taken with my Sony RX-100, which has become my replacement for not having 4x5 Polaroids anymore. I use the Sony in rich monochromatic mode and I get a real good idea of how the tones will come out (minus any filter use) in B&W film. The digital B&W shots look pretty good too, but there are some subtle and not-so-subtle differences in the final prints. The worst thing is when you see the effects of excessive digital enhancement when shooting in rich mono mode - for edges and thin lines (like those telephone lines). But as I said, the Sony is my B&W "tonal proofer" (I don't use it to determine exposure).
