Well since Ken posted a long-lens setup, here's the SV57U with a 4x5 back and a Fuji 600C. I was shooting the curvy background tree in between the two straight foreground trees to the right. Waited for light to warm and added a Nikon A2 warming filter. I posted the tree in the "Trees" thread, but here it is again...
Cheers, Steve

Hi guys,
that's one of my favorite joy.
In the pics it shows the ultra rare 4x5 Graflok back adapter, the 1" spacer for macro, Rodenstock Rotelar 180mm and the Polaroid 545 Pro back.
I've shoot some very impressive foto with this toy!

Lovely Shot!
I have been to the tops of the Great Sand Dunes, with my 4x5 Sinar Norma.
What an exhausting but exhilarating hike that was! :D
I did not put my stuff down, due to the blowing sand.
My Parents have a 16x20" B&W print from that hike on the wall in their home.

They come up on ebay pretty often...I would suggest watching many, the prices seem to range from $250-$800. I have no proof of this but from what I understand Kodak made the ones with a yellow dot, and they might have better image quality. Non-yellow dot ones were contracted out to other companies.
Considering a setup Speed/Aero went on ebay last week for $1300 I might have to build another one just to sell...this one cost me a lot less.

Yes! Very tough to hike up both tall dunes. I was up there all day on both occasions waiting for sunset. So the 50lb pack sat down.

Oh yes! That is the other thing...I like my lenses in shutter :( .
That might be a pipe dream...
I don't use mine for "typical" LF shooting so it lives happily on the Speed.

The second, acquired yesterday, is a Century 41 4x5. So clean it feels new, but is 107 years old or so.

Well, after more than a year the 14x17 is finally finished. Some of it looks nice, lots of it looks like #!@*...especially the bellows. Ground glass is plexi. Sort of looks like a Chamonix, that's because I "borrowed" the design...Used the lens board sliding lock from my old Cambo. Used birch 'cause it's cheap and light. Now I need to check it for light leaks. Then hopefully I can use it to make bigger carbon prints and other alt processes.

Andrew, welcome to 14x17! Nice job! It is a different beast that is for sure. 14x17 carbon's are a challenge that is for sure. I've not gotten one that I'm happy with yet but a couple in the works. Much harder to do but I see the potential. Great job on the camera.

My 4x5 point-&-shoot self made camera. Main body and hand grip from a Cambo Portrait, back from a Cambo Legend, lens board made from bamboo kitchen cutting board, viewfinder made with apartment door lens fixed to a garden tube PVC nut, lens protections are drawer handles.
Lens is a Schneider Super Angulon 47mm XL, fixed focus to the hiperfocal of f8.
I shot a lot of photos with this camera wich I made about 3 years ago.

Have to agree Sean, I saw something similar today but it just didn't look so well put together as Nana's.
I can't tell it's the rotatable Cambo Legend back which has a great little lever to lift the focus frame to slide in the DDS (double darkslide).

Yes it is, Ian that's that rotatable back I have, from a 4x5 back reductor that I kept when I sold out my Cambo Legend 8x10 (I also kept the 5x7 back wich I will use on a 5x7 point-and-shoot camera with a SA 90XL, that I will build).
I used only the focus frame, wich locks directly on the back of the main body of the Cambo Portrait body.
I changed the hand grip of the camera from vertical to horizontal position, I just had to do new screw holes to fix it.
here is a photo of a new angle of the camera and a photo where you can see the back and focus frame.

This camera is on John Grepstad site, in an early stage, when I was still doing focusing tests, so, the lens board was made of 3 plywood sheets, wich I recently changed for the definitive bamboo board.
http://home.online.no/~gjon/dias.htm
This camera was used as inspiration to a few guys, some of their cameras are really great.
I "received" orders from some guys, from USA, Brasil, Spain, Portugal and Nederlands, to build them a camera like this one but I don't have the parts to build new cameras.
This camera was intended to shoot urban photos but, it turned out to become my favourite camera for seascape photos, as it can't do lens or back movements and neither has a focus system, it turn out to be a fast operating 4x5 camera, wich is great for me has I use to shoot mainly during winter in places where sea is really wild, so you must run fast!:D

Blower bulb, anti-static cloth, cable releases, model releases, mini screwdriver, Calumet bellows factor ruler, LED headlamp, Sharpies, business cards, postcards, large Ziplocs
22 lbs in a Think Tank Airport Antidote (smallest International carry-on backpack with room for laptop in lid not shown) so real travel weight is in the low 30s (but I might switch to an iPad for travel). I could also remove the grip (it has a quick release) and stow it smaller, leave a couple Grafmatics at home, not use the Instant film in the Winter, etc. so there is room for a little bit more.

The architectural 5x7 I finally cobbled together over the weekend. I am still tinkering with it, like the focusing mechanism which will be an internal threaded thing I am still working with. This is version 3.3. It started as a quickie plywood box then got completely out of control when I remembered I had a stash of dimensioned Honduran mahogany that would make for a much lighter camera over ply. Basically, I wanted a lightweight, super-wide 5x7 that I could use as I would my Canon DSLR with a 10-22. Even with the Super Angulon 90, it weighs less than the DSLR. Even though it has all that "pretty wood", I am planning make it all black as I do not like to be bothered when working. Bad enough to be shooting LF, but having someone comment and question you on equipment is a peeve of mine. I plan to be shooting with this next week on the NoCal coast.
Nice looking camera. I wouldn't paint it black. If you don't want to talk with people much, just eat lots of garlic and go crosseyed occasionally. I don't get the 10-22 reference; 10-22 to me is a semiautomatic ruger rifle.
It's this lens (http://usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/ef_lens_lineup/ef_s_10_22mm_f_3_5_4_5_usm) being referred to. EF-S 10-22mm.

Robbie, can you tell us more about the back? Did you fab that up yourself? I like the way the back is flush and the springs don't take up any extra room - did you make the springs or are they cobbled from another camera?
Thanks,
Nathan
Very finely cobbled it is too...
Does that lens panel allow for movement?

This was designed to be a beater. For me the construction was all of function and I find it too "shiny" for my liking. I have little romantic notion towards the materials. It is pretty, but I want a wallflower.
"It's this lens being referred to. EF-S 10-22mm."
Yes, thank you.

Perhaps a weekend in total time for the build. It was only this weekend I did the glue-ups, metal work, and minimal finishing. Keep in mind "version 3.3". I improvise and never draw ideas up. That leads to many rejected parts.

The back I constructed out of hard maple. The springs are off an old 4x5. My one cheat. The GG was cut from an broken sheet I had lying around.
Very finely cobbled it is too...

Thank you. The rough design is based on the Gowland Architectural cameras. There is rise or shift depending on how you orient the lens board. I was playing around a design to allow for both, but it was getting too complicated for my liking. Anywho, the SA 90 doesn't have too much rise/shift in 5x7. It will be more useful with my Nikkor 120-SW. Again, this is all to ape the use of my DSLR in LF.

I use a plastic mesh (gutter guards) in a double 120 tank for 4x5s and a tea canister for the 5x7s. Works really well. Never had any problems with scratching (emulsion on the inside). Generally I use rodinal or hc110 @ 1:100 stand developing. Keeping it all basic is a bonus for me. Yes 127 on5x7 was a surprise for me too. Though I've seen a 5x7 hobo with a 90 on it.
Hope you do well.

My pre-anniversary speed, tiltall, trioplan barrel lens out in the snowy woods. A ~~ $400 total setup that made nicer snow photos than my $2000 dslr&lens. A piece of foam pipe insulation on a leg makes the aluminum nicer to hold or shoulder in cold weather. I'm not bragging of complete minimalism; I would have liked to have had the nicer pacemaker speed that day, but the shutter doesn't work right on that one.
All setup for this shot:

I went out to test a bunch of lenses..and not surprisingly - the Heliar is my favorite..and..I'm over the mush lenses (soft focus ones)..the Heliar gives me nice soft transitions without looking like I was drunk when focusing like the Darlot does

Time to stop being pretty and show a workhorse - The lens on this is a 360 Heliar, a slightly problematic design which gives it a beautiful glow around highlights down to about f9 (on the old scale) - This, with a 240 Heliar on 5x4", is the main lens for my current Naked Portrait portfolio

The beautiful camera!
Fresh snow and delayed start of school, so I went out shooting this morning with my daughter. She likes snow like I do. This is the best time of year for photography.
Newest photo accessory is the sled. Bigger and tougher than a kids sled, smaller than a jet-sled.
Great for short adventures (like less than a mile), I'd use the jet sled if I had more gear or needed to haul food or other outdoor gear.
B&J 8x10, pelican case of film holders. Jacket for a dark cloth. symmar-s 300/5.6 and Kodak portrait 305.

Nice job Liam, 45mm is a nice 4x5 focal length. You won't be disappointed and there will only be nice light falloff to the edge. Looking at your build thread does not show how the filmholder attached, what did you end up doing?

Time to stop being pretty and show a workhorse
What about a pretty workhorse?
This is my customized Linhof Master Technika. Some of the modifications are functional, some of them cosmetical.
The first thing you see is of course the red leather (from cameraleather.com) and the red bellows.
http://www.blackandwhitegallery.de/Linhof Red/Camera_Full.jpg
While the red leather on the housing is purely cosmetical the bellows (from a Chinese bellows maker on ebay who made a custom bellows to my specs) is a functional modification, despite the pretty red colour. It is a universal bellows which gives more flexibility for short lenses with a lot of movement.
http://www.blackandwhitegallery.de/Linhof Red/Bellows.jpg
The most complex (and probably irreversible) modification is that I have installed an inner rail focusing rack for short lenses (65mm and shorter), also from an ebay seller. You can now focus the short lenses with a little lever on the inner rail. I had to remove the rangefinder for this. This makes it more like a Technika 2000. A Master 3000 would be even better, but I cannot afford these (sigh). For rangefinder focusing I still a have a Technika IV cammed for 6 lenses.
http://www.blackandwhitegallery.de/Linhof Red/Focusing Rack.jpg
And last, I have installed a spirit level on the accessory shoe and a foldable reflex viewer, both from ebay as well. I wear glasses and I always have trouble composing an image under the darkcloth. So I have switched to reflex viewers a while ago, which makes composing and focusing a lot easier for me, and I have tried a variety of these. The foldable viewer is faster and more compact for backpacking than the standard reflex viewer.
http://www.blackandwhitegallery.de/Linhof Red/Reflex Viewer.jpg
Now the only thing is missing is a nice Super Angulon 47mm XL to go with it so I can make full use of the modifications.
Nice job Liam, 45mm is a nice 4x5 focal length. You won't be disappointed and there will only be nice light falloff to the edge. Looking at your build thread does not show how the filmholder attached, what did you end up doing?
Thanks, sadly I am just using elastic bands as this is just a quick build using what I had. I am on the lookout for a 4x5 film back and I will build another one which will be a lot better. I am not sure if the foam on the back is going to work that well at stopping light so I might have to put a dark-cloth over the top...

That's pretty old. I really don't think this one is that old however, something tells me it was made between 1926 and 1939.
This one is in remarkable shape really. I need not do a thing to it and I'm sure it will last the rest of my life. I'm certainly going to run some film through it as well, which was the whole reason I got it. I've got a couple lenses that dangle dangerously off the end of my zone vi and I just felt like I was tempting fate every time I pulled that stunt.
I'm very lucky to have this camera, I know Eddie did me right. I guess I should take back all those mean and nasty things I said about him? Naw..... har har har!!!!

Wow! I had no idea, all the pinhole shots I've seen have mostly been terrible. Could you post some details please, was that shot on film? Size of film, size of pinhole, distance from film to opening? I suppose I could just look up the details on that camera, since you named it and supplied a photo.

Jody, here's a link to the Titan user manual. It has all the specs. http://www.ilfordphoto.com/Webfiles/201111101258381441.pdf Don't know the pinhole diameter but it f206 and the camera is wide angle so the distance from film to pinhole is short. There are plans for a longer cones but they aren't available yet.
For this image I used Tri-X exposed @ 200asa and had the film lab processed in HC-110. I used the Reciprocity Timer app on my iPad to calculate the reciprocity compensation and to time the exposure. For metering I took a simple reflective reading with a Luna Pro SBC meter and used the f-stop chart generator on the Mr. Pinhole website to translate my meter reading to the f-stop of the pinhole. (my meter only goes f128) http://www.mrpinhole.com/flvsdiam.php
I printed the negative on Adox MCC-110 in Dektol.

Norma's rule. Chamonixes drool.
There was a really funny one on eBay the other day, someone wrapped the entire camera in tape "to protect it". I think they wanted $300 or so and it was functional but what a mess!
My advice for buying a Norma is to buy two, assemble the best from a choice of parts, and resell the pieces leftover. Avoid the ones that have tool marks on the bent controls - many students and grizzlies over-tightened the fine focusing and without adjustment, they had to wrench harder and harder over time.
Congrats to Jon for scoring the deal of a lifetime on that head ;-p The Sinar pan-tilt is integral to the camera and should be considered part of it, not an add-on.

As long as you use a cable release it works fine. There is a hook on the center column for attaching weight and in windy conditions I'll attach my backpack and lift the column until it becomes taut. This is a great set-up for backpacking.

My Dear Dorff V8.
Fortunately, we can count here in Sao Paulo with an excellent camera technician. His name is Celso Eberhardt. Some decades ago, his father moved from Germany to Brazil and became the official Leica technician in Sao Paulo. Very early, well before graduating in mechanical engineering, Celso began working with his father. For many years now, Celso is the official Leica technician in Sao Paulo.
Just over a year, I found right here a Dorff V8 in good working order. Nevertheless, we decided together that the case would be to restore it completely. The camera was entirely disassembled. All wood pieces were sanded and varnished with industrial lacquer. All metal parts were chromed – except for the rack, since the chrome could increase its thickness and thereby compromise its proper functioning. Finally, we decided that the new bellows would be red.
After a year of heavy use, it still looks like new. Behold, my Dear Dorff V8:

Frank Petronio
24-Aug-2012, 07:59
I really think they are great but they only work with certain packs due to strange little circuitry changes... My Dynalite M500x works well but the M500XL doesn't so I had to swap and find the older packs... but now I have two redundant kits. I get 250 pops at least and can even run the modeling lights (or a laptop) if I want to, and I last charged them in May.
The newer silver umbrellas are amazing too. At 500w that set up gives me f/96 @ ISO 320 at full length portrait distance. I can overpower most sun with lots of room to spare.
I don't use strobe much anymore but the batteries make it so much easier and more flexible. Pocket Wizards are really nice too. I should do a little story about my stobe kit but I'm really happy with the set up (2 packs, 4 heads) and it isn't too bulky or expensive.
Wow, cool kit Frank.
I'm egregiously under-informed about lighting gear. I'm working right now to rectify that. I wish there was someone like you doing real location work with lighting equipment that I could assist and learn from.

Some times bed tilt is not enough and other times you need to tilt the back forward. You must have a very deep recesed lens board too.
You can make it work but most of the time I am more worried about the bed showing in the frame than anything else.
My latest, Century Master studio camera. Came with the standard "sliding carriage" and a 5x7 back, have an 8x10 on the way, and is making lensboards atm, cant wait to use it =)

Jody - it looks like a 5x7 with a 5x7 back from an 8x10 "adapted" (guessing at the film size, but something like that) ... yeah, not the prettiest solution. If nothing's really messed up maybe you can sell that back and use the proceeds to buy a proper back. You'll probably also want to look for an extension bed. And new bellows. And a lens.
But otherwise, it looks perfect :)

Yep. It needs new bellows, repairs to the bed, a bed extension, some sort of mount, a new back, a new front standard, a lens.... In hindsight, it wasn't such a good buy, as even the back that I was counting on turned out to be an incomplete sliding affair that is slightly smaller than my 8x10s. It was fastened with strips of brass that were cut and bent into L-brackets and screwed into place. There were several other things screwed into various parts of the camera, the bellows were WIRED into that crooked shape (if I were to wire bellows into some sort of shape, I think I would try to make them straight?). The shutter was all there, but someone cut a diamond shape out of one of the blades so I can't even re-use that. It's currently sitting on a shelf while I wonder if there is anything to be salvaged off of it.
I did get a mint Super Kinax 6x9 folder with a SOM Berthiot lens while I was there, so at least I have something to play with.

Christopher, the bed was in the frame of one out of two images I made that day. It probably had to do with the camera movements and subject-to-camera distance.
The iPhone shot on post #1493, facing the Manhattan Bridge, did not have the bed in the photo. Another shot, this one of the Brooklyn Bridge, did have the bed in frame.
