A nice setup but I would worry about such a heavy camera and lens on this tiny ball head. I use a Ries A 100 for a similar setup. The 5x7" Technika listed DM 8600 the last year it was made (1986) so the digital shooters do make nice things affordable.

the head is tiny and compact. you need a turn of 20° to tighten it. levelling the camera even with the 600mm is safe! the only complaint is the quick release, but i am spoild by the linhof quick release.

Sinar F2 in the studio playing around testing a new front standard and a 6x9 roll back I have not used in a long while.
22 inches of draw, three standards, std bellows and bag bellows. Magic arm, from rail to Gitzo as stabilizing clamp. Yes, I was bored and fed up and neglecting duty to get away for a little bit. :-)

I just picked up my latest (and biggest) camera from Richard Ritter last Friday. Richard mated 14x20 and 8x20 Deardorff backs to his ULF camera. 14x20 isn't standard but I like the proportion (same as 5x7). The camera is surprisingly easy to setup and use. I starting using it that afternoon. Great image on the big gg. Camera weighs about 14-lbs. Total weight with tripod, head and lens is about 28-lbs. That is about the same weight of a Deardorff ULF camera alone.

Arca-Swiss Discovery with an old B+L Rapid Reticular that a buddy of mine found. Shutter works but aperture does not, so it is wide open at 1/25 of a second (or B).

Removed front element to double focal length which means I had to get both the 30cm folding rail (main one) and 30cm regular rail and mount both. Does this quite well and I was able to get the shot.

Just in case anyone doesn't know what a Sinar F looks like, here's mine. The lens is the 240/6.8 Caltar Type Y--just small enough to fit in a Copal 1. But the lens isn't focused--I ended up putting the standard bellows and a 6" rail extension on the camera to focus it.

I liked the Manfrotto 410, but like all geared heads, it wobbles a bit if I push on it. I'm not experimenting with a Sinar tilt head.

And I've since found an F2 front standard, which is better all the way around than the multipurpose standard used as a lens standard on the F.

The second picture is the whole mess in a "mobile office" that I bought at Staples for $90. It's on wheels, and in it I have the camera with a lens on it, six lenses in the compartment at the front. In the back I have put a Fujiroid holder, Pentax meter, and spare bellows (which clips to use as a compendium shade). The Sinar Vario holder is next to the lens compartment, with the dark cloth in its stuff sack next to it and my Horizon 4x loupe is under that. The front pocket has 6x9 and 6x12 holders, but I'll leave those behind most of the time once I've tested the Vario, making room for more film. The film is in the side pockets--not enough room.

Hi Allen

Yep,It's a Canham 11x14 I also have the 12x20 conversion. look @ the 2nd century to the right of the Canham , a Semi-Centennial 2a stand( this is the correct stand for the 8a) 8a w/ 11x14 back. Now that's hard to find. That was a good day:D . complete a 16" wolly velo in studio. a 10" conversion to 7" boards dual-piston packard 4 1/2"hole & a film holder light tight even & all in fine condition Hell I don't even have to cover the bellow when I shoot
I bought it from a fellow that liked things from the 20's . The 1920's that is (wont be long before we need to make the distinction). He put the century#2 stand & 8a camera it in his office & admired it.

Hi all,

This is my first post on the forums and I thought I'd show everyone my fixer-upper, a Toyo 45G! Currently I think it has the 150mm Schneider lens attached, but there is also a Schneider 210mm on the sidelines. When I found the camera, the GG was cracked and the bellows were in a sorry state. I've since replaced the glass but as you can see the bellows are still looking rather sad (pinholes everywhere!)

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii261/signalbox/toyo45g.jpg

I will be acquiring a Toyo810G before the new year, so I can't wait! It's also a fixer-upper but I rather enjoy the challenge :)

The 171 Arca allows me to indulge whatever latest faddy lens I like, up to a point...

usually it sits on a longer clamp, beefier head, and heavier tripod,
but I thought I'd hot rod it for this picture-

Very classy Ken - seems we have similar taste in "exclusive studio" spaces at the moment. It is great though, when you get a wonderful image and no one even suspects it was done with two chairs next to a window with black fabric over them.

Great self-portrait! I love your snow-encrusted camera.

Thanks Barry, that particular camera is 129 years old and worked flawlessly in the rough weather. My digital SLR, on the other hand, was rapidly dying in the snow and cold...plus trying to press all of those fiddly little buttons is nearly impossible in gloves.

Guess they don't make things like they used to!

Thanks!! Even after the thread I had no answer to my basic questions and then the first 11x14s actually became available so I just bought it on faith. I make expensive wood products as an occupation and this camera is literally perfect in every aspect. I made a wrap for it of heavy quilted material and strap it to a nice elk hunting pack frame. The whole unit with 2 lenses and two holders is 24 1/2#. I am very happy with it...Evan

Eric

I got this len from Miguel, he already coverted and mounted the Aero len onto the aluminum barrel (great job!). The front aluminum barrel is about 140mm Dia. which is the same as my Sinar len board. So I drill four holes and attached four little copper pin, just to leave a gap between them. i.e. the len board can be mounted onto the camera.

I am still looking for a better way to attach the focal plane shutter in front of this animal. May be I can try with my black hat first??

Non-folding (they now offer this model and a folding one). I prefer this design as it is simpler and quicker to zero (i.e. Zero), although a touch heavier. I don't think it's much bigger, either, as I can leave a lens (in my case, a 90mm f5.6) on it.

I finally got my Linhof Master Technika, and will try to get a shot up. Unfortunately I am missing a couple of small bits before I can really go shooting, such as a compatible cable release (who knew that the Linhof quick release was not compatible with most cable releases), a dark cloth (t-shirt would do, I suppose), a motor for the development (or use Robert's tip about spinning it in a sink full of water, corked, but I am not sure I have a free sink), and maybe a compendium or lens shade.

Sometimes the wide angle lens has glass that protrudes beyond the front of the lens support tube, so that cage protects a lens in case of camera tipping.

holy poop!

that things HUGE! what's film run for that thing?

-Dan

Dan,

I participate in the Ilford run of film that they run annually. I shoot FP4 for it. It goes about 22 dollars a sheet if my memory/math is right. I only did that equation once in my head and have never gone back to torture myself with such mathmatics again--much too painful.

When I have film I shoot it, when I don't I save up!

Here's my lunacy;

Ebony 20 x 24 next to my daughter Counti and son Satchel Cochise.

Whoa, I went all the way back to page 1 out of curiousity with the cost per sheet comment. Weird, a normal headshot with that camera would be a macro shot with greater than 1:1 :) Do you have any more shots of it?

In the three and a half years I've lived in Turkey I've yet to see anyone else using an LF camera or even MF, and the only film cameras (all 35mm) have been visiting American tourists.

I return to the UK to be more social :D

In the five years that I lived in Turkey the only other LF shooter I met was a Russian. I've yet to meet another LF shooter here in this region of France, or even see one on the street somewhere.

In Turkey, you will not see people in the street shooting LF.
The street photography in Turkey allows nothing but Leicas and Nikon Fs.
You will get killed under a darkcloth.

Onthe other hand, all the commercial studios, and all the masters of Turkish photography have LF cameras in their arsenal.

IanG,

you're right, almost ;). Its a Symmar 360/620 convertible.

one heavy lens, to say the least :D! huge filters too...

I'm watching some dagor's and artars as a suitable replacement to this nice lens, so it might be up for sale after the CLA on the shutter is done. Watch the For Sale listings in the next month(or two) or so. Its got something like a 500mm image circle, on the KMV I can do full rise, with full shift left or right, and still have full coverage at f/16.

cheers!

Nicolas,
The Toyo D was my first LF camera. I made the mistake of selling it. Mine came at a cost of $135. I sold it for $200. I thought I was doing good making a profit of $65 until my next camera (a wobbly B&J field camera) taught me that a rock solid light-tight camera is worth every bit of $135. I should have kept it.

Thanks, Chris.

The camera will not improve my photos, you're right. I must study and practice more to achieve that (I've been trying to do that, continuously).
I think I would never buy an Ebony, for example, because it is extremelly expensive but, what I really like in the Chamonix is the lightweight and performances it can deliver, with a very cheap price.

Now committed to a 6x7 roll film back which is on it's way from California, this will be more practical than shooting 1/4 plate.

I think that the one they sell just tells you the subject distance and If you wanna save some money on a rangefinder that will do the same thing, visit the sporting goods store around deer season and get a rangefinder for about $ 35.00.

Michael, I had a local joiner/cabinet makers fabricate a new frnt standard from oak, the way the standard sits when it's detached governs it's maximum width & height.

The standard attaches to the focus rail with two lugs (modified brass screws_ that fit the keyed slots. It folds into the body by detaching and laying flat with the lug end towards the rear.

I'm still missing some brass parts but someone is making them for me, there's a plate to go on the left of the front standard which is slotted so that a brass knob tightens the lens panel in position for rise & fall. I uses a bit of twig for the photos :D
