I'm still working out how to use it, planning on doing a portrait or two at the weekend if the sun ever comes back out again. I never realised there were so many ways of cocking up a photograph until I tried large format!
nice images Daniel. I am curious about your projection lens used on your speed graphic. I just got a 5" B&L Cinephor projection lens one from Jim galli and am contemplating a way to make a shutter. I have a packard I am trying to make work for use on my Chamonix, but if that fails I may be looking at a speed graphic. as I know so little about these, what shutter speed ranges can you get from them?
Love that bokeh on the portrait!

A bit late to this, but then was waiting for my new Richard Ritter 7x11/8x10 - and it arrived TODAY!!
All of the good things you have heard are true about the Ritter Cameras, the fit/finish and the functionality are top notched - Richard IS a master camera maker.
more photos can be found here (http://mikecastles.wordpress.com/2008/09/20/new-ritter-7x118x10-camera/)
Just an update (ok maybe brag a little too), took the Ritter out this past weekend and the weight of the camera really was nice after going up and down to the river at Guadalupe River State Park. It was a real pleasure (not that this out of shape old fart did not notice) to move camera, tripod and film and holders up and down - would have noticed the extra 10 lbs. had it been the old Eastman No 2. The camera has more movements than one will ever use and the bail back sure does make life easier.
Thanks again, Richard, this camera sure put the fun back into field photography for me.

Thanks for the nice comments on my camera and tripod. Unfortunately my digital camera is dead! It is funny that my 1904 Seneca Improved 8x10 still works fine but my 6 year old digital camera is dead! Go figure.
I'll have to see if I can borrow a digital camera and take some shots of the tripod. It is made out of American Black Walnut as is the 11x14. My design is proving to be quite strong and very stable. The Gitzo 1570M low profile head works great because of the low center of gravity. I use a Majestic head on the 8x20 and it works fine for that system. With the extra weight and mass of the 11x14 the low profile is the way to go.
I cheated a little making this tripod in that I got a 100 ft. extension cord and ran it from my apartment to the carport and used my Bosch plung router. Made things much more fun to make. Finally got to use the fancy router bits! I still wet sanded the whole thing with diamond pads to 1000 grit. Wet oil polished or French Polished I guess you might call it. At least my version of it. The pod did great out in the humid coastal climate. Again I'll try to get some pic's of the tripod soon. It is really not that hard to make.

Brian,
Despite any short comings you may have found, your camera is still an nice piece of work, I could never begin to imagine being able to bring such a project to fruition! A hand made, functional wooden 11x14 camera (I am very good with metal but absolutely terrible with wood!).
Just think how nice the second generation PB1114 camera body will be!
You could probably sell the first generation to finance the cost of the second G.

Colin, I wish they made x-ray film in 18"x24" because that would make things simple. I have a roll of 24"x200' graphic arts film. So I have a little more testing to do. I have had some excellent results with coffee developer, bringing it down to continuous. Here is a link if interested. http://www.apug.org/forums/forum37/46377-extreme-compensating-caffenol.html
Allen, just to be clear this camera is 18x24 inches. :) All the pieces I've built are crude at best, the important parts like the bellows and the back were made by the pros.:)
I haven't weighed the camera after putting on the front standard but I think it weighs around 25lbs. Not too bad for a small hike.

Pete, thanks. No I managed to get the bellows off of e-bay for $100.00. Here is the funny thing. I had already built the back for the camera and the bellows that I got fit in perfectly! My back for the camera came off of a 11x14 Deardorff. These two parts saved me a lot of time and frustration.

I have been using this setup with 4x5, 5x7 and 8x10 backs to make photos of moving water. Been using a 21" F/11 Kodak, 19" Artar, and my favorite a 15" F5.6 Wolly tele. Also use some Repro Clarons which I love.

Hi Arthur,
What kind of speeds do you get with the focal plane shutter? I have always assumed that focal plane shutters only work accurately when it's near the film plane. Please enlighten us. Thank you. Henry
Arthur Nichols
11-Nov-2008, 16:06
The shutter works great up front like that. In that position it allows the use of any size back. I have used all the formats from 2 1/4 x 2 3/4 right up to 8x10. The speeds go from 1/10 to 1/1000. I typically use speeds in the range of 200-500. Sometimes higher if the wind is blowing. It all depends on the focal length of the lens, the wind, the speed of the water and so on. It is not really a science but more of an aquired art to be able guess at the needed shutter speed. Lots of film and lots of failed negatives but also lots of fun. I usually get hypnotized by the water when I am working on this project and rarely go home with empty holders.

My top handle speed graphic (that doesn't say it's a speedgraphic). The nice people at graflex.org's forum said it's probably a first year of production one based on its serial number.
and its ancient lens+shutter which works pretty well.

I have a few random lenses I've picked up but don't use very often. An approximately 200mm brass lens with nice variable apertures from f/8-f/44 and a lens I took off an old Kodak 3x4 folder which seems to have a shorter focal length but is hard to focus on my ground glass.

Hi to all,
Just wanted to share with you a few pictures of my new baby.
I basically wanted a compact 8x10, and easy to put in action (nothing to fold, turn around etc.)
As I do not need, or want back movements, and do mainly landscape and architectural photography (210mm Sinaron WS and 240mm Apo Sironar), I decided to cannibalize, and started with a 8x10 Cambo Portrait camera back, converted a 5x7 back standard to front standard, and added a Cambo 5x7 – 8x10 bellows with a detachable rail.
If I need more extension, which I generally don’t need, I just switch rails with a regular Cambo SC rail.
Thickness of the whole stuff including the huge 240mm Sironar S, 7,5 inches.
Best regards from France
Thierry

Thierry, I really like your 8x10, it looks like a great setup. What's the weight?
I made a modification to my 8x10 Grover. It cut the weight down to ~8lbs and I can use lenses from ~120mm-325mm. One day I'll make a bag bellows for this so the movements for shorter focal length lenses aren't limited by the current bellows.
BTW I didn't level and straighten anything out for the pics, that's why it looks so uneven.

Hi to all,
Brian,
The weight of the camera excluding the lens is 6,4 kilos. This includes the Manfrotto mounting plate, which is mounted permanently. The idea was to take the camera and just plug it onto the tripod.
A leather strap in normally attached to the two screws on the vertical mount, making the whole camera easily portable.
I didn’t want to take any compromise on stability, the reason why I didn’t want to make a light version, and drilling holes all over the camera.
I could have used a 4x5 front standard instead, but preferred to use a 5x7 standard for stability reason, as it is less affected by the weight of the lenses.
My main issue was to have a less bulky, more compact outfit.
Anyway, with the two lenses mentioned before, and occasionnally a 355mm G-Claron, weight is, and will remain an issue.
Not to forget I am not "light" either. (no comments, please  )
Best regards
Thierry

John, were you holding your breath or using a snorkel?:)No, he was just checking to see if he had his tripod in Clyde's holes.;)
hey all,
my newest find! it is a 5x8 scovill with 2 plate holders, lens and aperture disks, and the original box!
check out he plate holders. the middle piece comes out and them you slide the plates into the slots. hen replace the middle septum and this holds the plates tightly in place. a pretty cool design for sure
it has the inserts for shooting 4x5 plates. i believe it maybe a dry plate camera but i will use it as a wet plate for sure. note the interior slot to fit a septum so you can shoot either a stereo shot or possibly shoot 2 separate 4x5s.

Hi Keith
What sort of grip is that attached to your MPP? I've got a Mk8 and I can never get the front sportsfinder seated properly on the front standard - is it supposed to be removable? The one on mine is such a tight fit I can barely attach it by hand.

I don`t know to be honest, as it was already attached to the camera when I bought it. It came as a complete outfit in a leatherette box with lenses and other accessories.

The camera is a 10x8 Gandolfi Precision, now called Traditional. Not shown in the pic is the front swing attachment which makes it a bit more versatile, but not with wide angles. It also has a 5x4 reducing back.

I see you are using it as a press camera. I only use mine on a tripod and use a focus magnifier. Another accessory that came with the camera is called a Polyfocus-finder. That fits on the flash shoe on top of the camera and is adjusted to similate the focal length of the lens on the camera. If you can find one, you might find it easier to use than the sports-finder.
It might be worth considering a monopod Matt, as the camera would feel quite hefty after a while of hand holding.
some nice images on your site too.

Here's my Baby Deardorff. It has been used for my livelihood at various times since 1984. It came with 3 lenses and a darkroom setup (45mx +3 lenses) for $1g. Where I lived, no one knew anything about LF or b/w or anything, and it was a few weeks before I figured out what it was. The rounded area in the rear bracket for the thumb was the telltale characteristic.
I shot for years before even talking with someone who shot 4x5 and didn't know if what I had was nice or not. It seemed rickety compared to the medium format I was using, but I loved the character of it and I wasn't seeing any other cameras that had that length of bellows draw. Looks real pretty to me now, over 20 years later.

I had Patrick Alt make me a new bellows which I installed in the late 90's before I went underground. The nickel plated hardware has held up nicely. It doesn't have front swing, but it does have rear swing and the front gives a fair degree of rise and fall without torqueing the bellows.

My light weight fold up,
A Nagaoka 4x5 in a boiler room from the turn of the century. The old pipes and tubes are being mothballed for ultra modern characterless natural gas little boxes, so I need to shoot the old room quickly before it is gutted. What I like about this camera is that the body, 6 sheet film holders, two lens, dark cloth etc fit into an old Nikon 300 2.8 case and can be stashed in the corner of the trunk and weights next to nothing.
The room shook constantly and every pipe in the place rattles, with 4 second exposures, 50 percent of the frames are not tack sharp. This one is cropped slightly, cheap scanner sorry, on the neg you can see the dust in the cob web around the main valve and a drop of thick fuel drip from a disconnected pipe (that has been cropped out in this version).

I'm kind of getting into flash shooting lately, both off-camera (mostly with my digital... for now) as well as on-camera. For the on-camera stuff, I've just finished collecting and putting together my speedgraphic setup, which is working great! The mounting of the strobe head to the flash handle is a bit crude (abomination?) right now, but hopefully it will be temporary until I can find the actual correct part. Which unfortunately seems to be difficult to find!

That's a stance to take notice of, you could try out for the part of Zoro at your local play house or something along those lines :)

With expression on your face, I would guess that your subject's glasses were reflecting the tripod legs and you're using the cloth to cover them. I've used a cloth like that many times...

Well, I just did some very thin sand paper job on the wooden parts and varnished it again. The most complicated was to disassemble it and take away all the dirt from the brass parts, again with very thin sand paper. I believe this camera must be, at least, 70 years old. The brass parts were completely black. This camera was used as an enlarger for many years.
I did not varnished the brass parts, because I like the natural look of it, even if it is a bit oxyded but, often, I have to clean it again with a soft polish liquid.

Yes I do it my self (exept the bellow, I'll make a new one next summer)
So, My first job was Cabinet Maker French varnish maker and Violin and bow maker).
Varnish is french varnish (Vernis au tampon, in french).
For the Brass I used a Ultrasonic engin and after a polish engin (find in a special shop for gunner and bullets).
Like you I do not make varnish on brass parts
I made too the replica case, like Air Force case in 1930.

I spent some time with a tape measure and made a crude scale to use my MPP Mk8 hand-held with my 90mm Super Angulon by focussing on the ground glass and double checking the distances..
The wire frame finder is originally from an MPP made for the military.
Can anyone recommend a lens hood?

I see,
Ok, so just a very light sanding and apply varnish. That would probably do the job for mine.

Frank, I've got an MPP press and the build is nothing to shout about. I don't really know why I ever bought the thing and I've never used it. It will have to go soon. This is not an advertisement, just a comment on the quality (or lack of it).

Hi Frank
The build quality is OK - you couldn't really describe it as the same quality as a Rollei or Leica or the best German marques. Apparently it was designed quite similarly to the Linhof of the time but manufactured in Britain.

Mentor 10x14 cm, rare format. Just finish fixing the camera. In despite of dimensions, it is light and can hold with one hand. Better to work on studio and mount on tripod any way!!!
Extreme front movements, tilts and swings. 4x5 adapted camera back. Can focus through the back or top GG. Comes with a beautiful Meyer-Görlitz Trioplan 4,5/300mm !
Will post pics later.

Bought this off the forum a few months back. It was in good shape, needing just a little reassembly and to have the bellows reattached. I finally found which glue was needed (polychloroprene adhesive) and the very small screws need to reattach the front bellows plate to the front standard. Just finished it up this week, added a 210 Schneider, and took my first image through it today. Can't wait to get it into the field!

I've got one of those Toyo half-plate cameras, and I adapted a 5x7 back and it has become my field workhorse camera. It is possibly the lightest way to shoot 5x7 in the field, and I love that it takes standard Crown-graphic lensboards.

Here is mine. I took this before acquiring a new tripod head. The other photo is the rest of my gear. It is 35mm and digital, all Nikon.

Here is my Okuhara, a Japanese half-plate field camera made in Osaka. It takes book-form film holders, so I made an adaptor from scraps of cocobolo and ebony that accepts modern 4x5 film holders. I’ve seen four other Okuhara cameras on the Web, but none of them are exactly like mine, and none of the Web sites provides a firm date as to when they were made. My camera differs from the others in that it has hardware on the rear standard to allow for rear swings.

Here's two of mine, both are 9x12 format that i have grown to like very much. It's compact and still large enough. I also have some of the usual things, like speed graphic, graphic view & calumet c1.
The more prettier reflex primar, really nice mirror reflex..handles great, lite and the shutter & mirror works amazingly silent & smooth for the size. It came with Meyer Trioplan 210mm f3.5 but i have been using tessar 210mm f3.5 on it mostly. Both are really nice lenses. My old speed graphics front standard is now serving as more convient way to use different lenses.
http://www.taidejakonsti.fi/muutos/TEMP/primar.jpg
And here's my ugly little range finder, really nice thing to use. And much smaller & lighter than the polaroid conversions. 9x12 cassettes are also nice and compact. It has advanced features like pc-flash socket and rubber band fixed shutter.

wfwhitaker
25-Jun-2009, 11:05
It came with four Wisner holders. 8x10 cut down or, since I have a fair amount of it, 10x12 cut in half.
The 10" Commercial Ektar shown is a nice lens for it and the focal length suits the way I see, although there are others which work well with the format. This is so much easier to carry around than an 8x10!
But I posted it because it has a red bellows...
Ken Lee
25-Jun-2009, 11:35
It's not only a Wisner, made in my own state of Massachusetts - and beautiful - but it also comes as close as any, to shooting directly in the Golden Ratio (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_ratio).
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/93/Fibonacci_spiral_34.svg/250px-Fibonacci_spiral_34.svg.png
I mask my 4x5 and 5x7 cameras accordingly - 99% of my current work (http://www.kenleegallery.com/html/still/3.html) is in this format - so it's a delight to see the real thing, you might say.
(The Chamonix 5x8 is another which comes close, but your Wisner produces an even more substantial negative)
