I'm tempted to acquire a similar 13x18 Technika if I see it again for a 3rd time on Sunday it has a nice 210mm f4.5 Xenar (in a Compound).
Ian
Mine also came with this Xenar 210/4,5 in Compound (bulit 1942). Here on the photo, a WW-Meyer Aristostigmat 120 ist mounted.
My 13x18 survived from end of WW2 to 2016 in east Germany (near Chemnitz). It was heavy used, I think in the 1950s/60s a GDR Pro was very happy to have this Technika..
I paid 300 Euros for a very dirty (cellar) camera/Bellows with pinholes/good working Compound an clean lens ... The bellows contained a lot of old dust/dirt but fortunately the storage was dirty, but dry...
The 9x12 was in much better shape, maybe it lived its whole life in/near Munich where it was built. Camera Munich, Shutter Munich, Lens Saalfeld near Jena...

Another new 9x12, but only for the shelf (at least in the moment as the old compound shutter is stuck.
A very old Plaubel Camera with Plaubel Lens (Plaubel Doppel-Orthar F6 No 2 ). The body is also made by Plaubel, see plate in body.
2 scales for the convertible lens.Wooden camera with aluminium floor/door.
Plaubel was founded in Frankfurt in 1902 by Hugo Schrader (the first Makina was made 1912 btw)
The shutter is a early Compound, Alu finish, 1904-1909? http://www.earlyphotography.co.uk/site/entry_S47.html

Indeed a very old Compound....If you don't get it fixed, you may send it in - would love to get my hands on that one
albeit only after my kitchen and bathroom have been rebuilt :-0

Very nice Ernemann HEAG II Ser. 2 (1918 as I think) 9x12 Normalfalz Camera, found in its Birth City Dresden. Ernemann merged in 1926 with Ica to Zeiss Ikon.
The Camera is in very good shape, everything works except the fast 1/300s an the still existing orignal fix mounted cable release.
Body and back is made from wood, with nice details, the flatbed is steel.
Lens is a Ernemann Anastigmat 1.6,3/135mm Ernar (a strange Protar copy maybe, se my thread to this topic in "lenses") in a Ernemann Auto-Sektor ? shutter.

Linhof Kardan TE with 4x10 back from China. Since getting this I have also obtained a Linhof Kardan TL which is more substantial with its L-shaped standards. Need to adapt the 4x10 back to the TL and find a 5x7 back for the TL. Hope local machine shop will be able to make the part to slide on to the TL's dovetail track.

Excellent, they'll be beautiful!
My Titan 5x7 made by Mike Walker. It's really unique as this camera is made of ABS plastic and stainless steel. The back is fixed which I actually like and all movements are located on the front standard. I was astonished when I first handled this camera as it's exceedingly robust and solid. It locks down tight, it doesn't flex, nothing on it wiggles. There is nothing flimsy on this camera. It's built like a military tank! Where I want to be careful and protective of my wood large format cameras, this one seems to say 'go ahead, take me anywhere!' This 5x7 was modified by Mike to take Sinar lens boards as all my other large format cameras use those boards. This camera is a blast to use with a 180mm and my 400mm f/5.6!

Very cool. I really like the camera. I may eventually try to come up with something to change out the tripod to a better one. Its sturdy when set on good ground like shown in my photo but I would like a much stronger one for different locations.

I took the tripod mounting ring out and put a piece of plywood circle in its place, I had soaked the plywood disk in linseed oil laced with anti-mold, which is a lot thinner than normal linseed oil and permeates, it really strengthens the wood. Then just screwed in a normal tripod fitting, its now used on my heavy manfrotto tripod and is very stable.

Do you shoot it mostly hand held or with a tripod?

Finally i can post on this thread!
Arrived today. A Wista 45 DX Cherry wood like new in box with a kodak ektar f7.7 on prontor shutter and 2 holders.
The only "downside" is that the prontor shutter doesn't have an open shutter function so i have to lock it on B to focus etc. not even a T function. i don't really mind. i've been through toughest times. haha
Anyway a quick picture and im off to the fields to try it out!

You need to look for a Compur #0 shutter but you'd have to make a new scale, I have the same lens in the Protor SVS which I used in Cyrrus 15 months aga :D. I also now have a very late US version in a Graphic Compur #1 and it is far quicker to use, they are very sharp lenses and so small and light.
You'll enjoy the Wista I've had mine for 30 years and they are great cameras to use.

This is the 8x10 camera that I've decided to keep. It combines a Sinar P rear standard with a Sinar Norma clamp and front standard.
What I like about this camera is that the rear 8x10 Sinar P standard bearer was designed for copy work. It has no movements other than focus. At less than 12 lbs, this camera is lighter weight and not nearly as large or cumbersome as, say a standard Sinar P 8x10. Whatever configuration I might need involving rear movements can be duplicated using front movements alone. There's an ease of setup, efficiency, and elegance to this that I like.
The camera is limited to 24" extension, which also makes it more compact. This enables me to fit the camera onto a standard 6" Sinar rail for relatively easy backpacking. On the rare occasions where I might need a longer draw, I have a Norma accessory standard and an extra bellows that I can use. When needed (3rd photo), I can add two 6" extensions to the Norma risers that gives the camera virtually unlimited rise.

Graflex Anniversary Speed Graphic with RF coupled 165mm f2.7 Zeiss Tessar lens and with my lovely non descript Petzval lens (about 180mm not RF coupled obviously)
165570165571
Graflex Pacemaker Speed with Rangefinder-coupled 150mm f3.5 Xenar lens. Working Kalart Focuspot with LED flashlight. Its fun but I never shoot in complete darkness (laser focusing also available but its strongly advised to cover the eyepiece with tape!) The cameras rails have been blackened by factory, must have seen some service in the military. The Shutter was broken beyond my repair abilities so I tossed it out to save a few grams.
165572
My favourite hand held camera is the Bush Pressman 4x5. I have calibrated the Kalart (oh yea, I love those things!) to the wonderful Schneider Kreuznach Xenotar 135mm f3.5. perfect sharpness wide open and overall picture quality, it´s like a summicron in 4x5, awesome! I have a second lens board with my 90mm Super angulon MC, not coupled off course but nice to be able to use the cameras movements (it has plenty for such a small package!).

Dan,
I'm installing a lens on Sinar lens board and use it with Sinar shutter if a lens isn't huge.
For huge lenses I have the other solution.
In back of a Cambo front standard there is just the adapter for my bellows with wide front frame, not a second shutter.

One of my 4x5 Normas with 47mm F8 Super Angulon on Norma recessed board. Very nice for 2x3"/6x9cm film
Hardest item to find was the swiveling 90 degree cable release adapter.
In the lower left hand corner you can see my Norma 75mm F8 Super Angulon, on manually-operating Norma rabbit-ear board. This lens works with the Sinar Norma shutters and has the correct Schneider Center Filter for the 75mm F8 Very quick to use

I have an 810MII that would look good in red.

I just bought this Deardorff V8 from Jake at Blue Moon in Portland. It's a late 1960's or early 1970's S/N 5138. Was used for many years by Oregon photographer Ron Cronin, and according to Jake it has been knocked off the tripod and into more than one bodies of water.

While it looks pretty rough, I spent a few hours cleaning things up and aside from some pinholes in the bellows it should be ready to go.

If you need a new bellows, I'd send yours to Custom Bellows, Keith does a great job. You can use some fine steel wool on the plating, looks like it's coming off already, or leave it as is. I also wouldn't use it on that Bogen quick release, unless you'd like it to meet some more bodies of water or worse! L

Here's my new to me Rittreck View 5x7 field camera. I've put some work into it (I replaced the bellows, made a 5x7 back for it, and also an adapter that allows me to use all my lenses on both this camera and My Graphics), and posted a thread in the DIY forum about them. Here, I'll just place some images of the completed camera.
166703

My widest lens for this camera, a 75mm f/8 Super Angulon, still reaches infinity focus, even though the adapter board necessitates that the lens rides about 1/2 inch further out from the camera. (By the way, this lens is one of those that came in the not-well-regarded Copal 00 shutter, but mine happens to be my most accurate LF shutter, and I have a Copal 0, 1, and 3, as well as two Seiko 0s.)

Thanks, everyone!
I found a mechanical problem with it last night, which I describe in the DIY thread (http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?139937-Refurbished-Rittreck-View-5x7-Field-Camera). But I don't see it (yet, anyway) as a frustration, but as a challenge. If I cannot find a way to piece together the parts I need from stock hardware items, I know two machinists, and hope one of them will be able to make what I need. I like to tinker; it makes the things I use more my own, which, for me anyway, makes using them more fun to use, which means I use them more often. If any of that makes sense.

A couple weeks ago I took the plunge into LF photography. I've been shooting film since my high school photo class days in the late 90s. More recently I got into medium format when I purchased a Rolleiflex last year and have been having a lot of fun with that. My uncle is a photographer and shot LF professionally and as a fine artist for years, and so I always was curious to try LF myself. So a couple weeks ago I bought a 4x5 Wisner Expedition at B&H. The Expedition model is the same as their technical field model but is made of lighter weight material and weighs a couple pounds less. I haven't shot with it yet, as I'm still acquiring all the various lenses and gear that I will need. Later this month I will be at a family reunion with my uncle who is going to bring his Deardorff and give me some LF lessons. Here are some pics of the Wisner, including one taken next to a 5x7/4x5 Deardorff at B&H for comparison.

No problem with focus creep -- as long as everything is locked down. However, it is a heavy lens -- and I mean heavy -- much like my Fujinon T 600mm f12. They both cause the front standard to bend forward a little. All I need to do is tilt the front standard a little backwards. Problem solved.

I’m kind of a latecomer to a Sinar F camera. They’ve intrigued me in the past. But their 12” base rail makes it cumbersome to fit them into a backpack.
Experimenting with a Sinar Norma system I purchased last year, it occurred to me how a 6” extension rail could be customized as a base rail. It turns out that this customized rail is idea for use with a Sinar F camera. The combined system is one that I really enjoy using.
The following link shows how this can be done.
http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?131276-Sinar-F-Norma-Hybrid-Camera
The customization immobilizes the red knob, and that makes it easy to attach additional Sinar extensions in the normal fashion. As the second photo shows, the 6” base rail is long enough to hold the clamp and both the front and rear standards. The combination can be easily stowed in a backpack. See the fifth photo in the next post.
Adding a Manfrotto hexagonal, quick release plate to the clamp, set up is a simple matter of removing the camera from the backpack and placing it on the tripod head. I keep three additional 6” extensions rails in the back, and that enables me to assemble a combined rail of 24”.
There are two other customizations that I’ve included with this kit. Described in the following link . . .
http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?136313-Sinar-Elephant-Ears-Bag(gy)-Bellows
I reduced the size of the bag bellows. In my view, Sinar bag bellows have too much bellows material. This seems at odds with the fact that the bag bellows was designed for short focal length lenses. (?) Removing some of the material makes it easier to store the camera with the bag bellows attached. Even without this extra material, I can still use my bag bellows with a 180mm lens. It’s rare that I ever have to change back and forth.
Seen in the fourth photo, the third customization that I’ve included with this kit is a compendium lenshood that I made by combining a portion of a Toyo hood with a Sinar Norma, intermediate standard. See the following link.
http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?130361-Compendium-Bellows-Lenshood-for-Sinar-Norma-Cameras&highlight=compendium
I like this hood, because it’s independent of the front standard that holds the lens. As long as the lens is mounted on a flat lensboard, this hood is compact enough to use with a 75mm lens. It’s also easy to move back and forth as one makes adjustments to, or recocks the lens.
I’ll add one more quick detail. I do not like the more recent, tall Sinar clamps, which I believe can amplify tuning fork vibrations. Instead, I was able to find an early, low-profile Sinar clamp. Much better, and more convenient in my opinion.
As I indicated, I enjoy using this camera. Especially the 6” base rail, and I think the other customizations as well, turn this inexpensive Sinar F camera into a very effective and usable tool.

my third trial, Chamonix 45N2 in the field
trial one and two ended up in selling all the gear.
For your third trial : If you are after hyper-resolution sharp pictures, I would advise having good, sharp lenses first, such as Voigtlander "Heliar", Rodenstock "Ronar", or Schneider "Symmar".
Using a hi-res lens, I would advise using Kodakchrome (or similar) transparancy cut-sheet as a source for high-resolution scanning via machines such as the Epson V810 which can yield sharp transparencey-film scans upto 200 megapixel (depending on sharpness and size of the film scanned.
Obviousely, once scanned, the film-tranperency can be used for chemical paper-printing, at wgich stage, it is likely to collect micro-scratches, and thus is no longer suitable for scanning.

[...] Using a hi-res lens, I would advise using Kodakchrome (or similar)
Yes indeed. I've been wondering what to do with all that 4x5 Kodachrome film.
And for 'hi-res', I add another of discouraging comment - don't go overboard and get some kind of process or enlarging lens that is hard to focus (for me), and does not necessarily yield the resolution usually published except at rather short ranges. Really, I have not found a reasonably priced modern lens that has disappointed me, and I have gone overboard to my chagrin.

oh that's awesome!
I never thought of throwing a 5.6 plasmat on a 4x5 but this len was given to me as a barter for me selling other items / my time for a close friend.
I shot 810 all through graduate school but after I wrapped up my degree the cost of the format was too much for me to maintain what I thought was a productive amount of work.
Set up the 4x5 Mercury yesterday with my 47mm XL. I needed another front panel so I didn't have to switch out parts with the 2x3 Mercury. Also pictured is the 38mm XL that I can swap on easily by screwing the helical all the way out and switching lenses (that sounds mildly dangerous but the helical is no where close to coming out even when focused down to inches away), as well as my Horseman 6x12 back for panoramic images.
This whole setup is super lightweight, cheap, and effective. It's all 3D printed materials. Finally have a "P&S" type camera for my 47mm - now I just need to go use it :).

Corran - are you using the schneider iiic center filter?
I only have a IIIb which I share between the 47 and 58. I would buy a IIIc if one popped up cheaply but it hasn't been a real concern. The leftover vignetting hasn't upset me that much (though it is noticeable on slides).

Good point. Keep in mind that to work properly with a center filter, the lens must be stopped down, usually to f/22.
Best of luck.

Me with my Deardorff in the Marys River yesterday evening, working on my "Roots" series. The lens is a Schneider Symmar-S 240mm. I was shooting Bergger Pancro 400, with one sheet of HP5+ to compare characteristics of the two films. Need a bit more description and text on the lens/Filter (?).
It is a German Camera and it has a (very advanced for its era!) German shutter, but with a T,T & H (UK) lens - probably a triplet. Looks like the 9x12cm size.
Good afternoon Steven
Firstly thank you for your reply and information you asked is bellowed.
Taylor Taylor & Hobson Ltd Cooke lens H.D Taylor's patents May 28 1895 September 22 1896

This is encrypted on the lens.
Thanks again in advance for your help

Probably from around 1905. The Shutter is from that period and the series 3 Cooke triplet was becoming a very popular lens. The extension rails are quite narrow, which was great for the early RR lenses (F8) and just about OK for the early anstigmatics. Then the Tessar came along with an F4.5 which needed wider lens mounts and, therefore, wider rail tracks.
There were "no name" cameras, but there may be a name somewhere on the camera - often embossed on the leather cover Handle or back.
There should be a focussing scale on the left-hand side of the camera and "stop" positions. IT may even match the lens which is currently mounted! If you don't have plate/plate holders, these are available - but there are a number of styles.
Plenty of these lightweight cameras are still in use, along with the larger size 13x18cm.
Film and Paper are readily available from Germany at fair prices.
Thank you and I got a name for camera is Glunz Hannover, I find this camera and more with few camcorders on my loft. I have been living here over ten years and never realised. They were really hidden in the corner. I might try to use them but seems like I got lots to learn.

This was recently photographed for a conversation regarding my last Polaroid item I have. A box of Polaroid Type 55 that I'll soon be shooting with my Plaubel Peco Universal III 4x5. My comment also included a short story of how I obtained the camera. I won't bore you with all of that but I will say that there's a very good chance that two hall-of-fame photographers owned this camera. Walter E. Bennett, the first salaried photographer for "Time" magazine. His personal decals of his signature were on many of the items I bought, and, the signature matched the Wally Bennett who covered the White House (for "Time") during the 60s & 70s.
The other photog who probably owned this camera was “Life” magazine photographer Frank J. Scherschel who covered WWII and is famous for his color images from that time. The person I bought this from found the camera, 2 lenses, holders, etc., in a case at an estate sale in Baraboo, Wisconsin from a camera store that was going out of business due to the passing of the owner...Frank J. Scherschel.

I recently received this Burke & James Grover 4x5? monorail in poor condition. In addition to being covered in mold, dust, dirt and nicotine, it had the front of the bellows separated from the front and the back of the camera was missing. The front and back movements were also frozen in place.
ETA After a bit of investigation it turns out that this B&J camera is really a 5x7. I need to make or buy a proper 5x7 back for it now.

Thanks Moe. The long monorail is essential for using my (other) 42" bellows with long lenses such as the Fujinon EBC T 400mm/f8 or the T 600mm/f12.
The bellows shown above is the standard 24" bellows.
So basically, with the 42" bellows, I don't really need a Triplex configuration.
However, turning this assembly into a Triplex configuration is relatively easy now, since all it takes is the addition of a 5x7 front standard and a short 5x7 bellows, which are part of my existing 5x7 camera which was bought as a whole, complete with a recessed lens-plate and compendium.

Interesting indeed. It looks like you're using ine of the Chinese reduction lens boards? If so, have you tried it with the g.g., or with the 6x9 film holder?
Have you tried using the metric front function carrier w/an F rear carrier? It helps to obtain more rise on the front. Even better, I've been using an Oswald era "A" carrier, which adds 8mm to front rise. (For 4x5.). No rear tilt. But w/ 2 inches of front rise, it's not a loss.
Anyway, I thought that I would comment.

It looks like your 8x10 is the earlier MK2 machine (1957-1959 ?) equipped with geared lift (for Rise and Fall movements).
Later MK3 machines did not - I have no idea why Linhof omitted such feature, for such heavy gear

Ha! I thought the geared rise was new and improved...
I have a couple geared rise standards. They lost parts and screws prior to my stewardship. Perhaps shipping vibration. Parts are impossible to find for these years. I bought single standards for parts. Knobs are a weak point.
Beware of the tripod foot as I see them as under-engineered or is it over-engineered. They break and nobody seems to have a spare. A better one could be machined easily. My first one had a very long chrome rail with bad rust, I almost made a new one, but found the superior triple rail.
Today I have NOS 5X7 mit Linhof case. First session in new studio.

A 60 years-old Linhof brochure, showing off their new upcoming 'Mark-3' Kardan Color 8x10'' Triplex Configuration (the whole system is highly modular allowing the mix of parts from differetnt models) - A West-German print advert, Munich, June 1959.
Moe, please note the different design of the knobs - compared to the traditional Faucet-Type knobs (which I prefered most).
Unlike the older type, the newly designed knobs could not be taken apart from the machine, as they all had a locking-pin, near the knob's neck.
This is brobably done to prevent a known occurence of knobs cracking or shattering if loosen away from their fixture and falling of a hard surface.

I saw a Gigant on sale on Ebay Germany for 175 Euro about two weeks ago. Not all Ebay Germany's listings will appear on Ebay global, because those listings which will not ship (only collected locally) are pointless to publish outside Ebay Germany, and most Ebay Germany listings will only ship inside Germany but not abroad.
Shipping such a monstrum is a whole new opera.
There are of course, all kinds of active web-auctions in which you sort out by wise Google search-phrase.
Next time I'll see a Gigant on auction or on sale, I will send you the link on private mail.
The best way to collect Linhof parts is to actually go to Germany and look up into the local market.
Yuval,
Notice the ball gimbal on the standard to rail connections. They can move in a very interesting way.

I've seen this weird contraption before, on picture and also as parts for sale about 5 years ago on Ebay. The monorail, The back-standard without the plate-carriage, and the front-standard. No bellows, no monorail-clamp, but the maim members were there.
Not as if I would consider it back-then, the Kardan Color 5x7 and 8x10 is a fully integrated one-solution system, allowing you to exchange parts between different models of the system - they produced 5 or 6 marks to the system.
The ball joints is an ingenious idea : it allows you to combine 'tilt' and 'swing' and 'revolve' free-movement, before locking into position.
Kardan Bi series allows you to tilt the standards at their base, but even that is far from the 3 axis movement of a ball-joint.

I remember the first 8x10 camera that I built many years ago...with both front and rear standards affixed onto ball heads which were attached to split blocks which slid on dual rails (aluminum closet poles), with a third sliding/locking split block positioned in between which was the tripod mount. Very simple and efficient...but "zeroing out" movements could be a bit iffy!
Yuval,
I saw that Ball Joint Linhof on eBay. It was in such poor condition, I considered it a no go for any restoration.
A trip to Germany would be interesting, but it could take years to uncover a Gigant.
Not enough time and money. Anywhere in NA is my only option.
I have a large cargo trailer...
Yuval,
I have 1962 and 1966 Linhof full catalogs. 1957 is online. I tried to find a Gigant studio stand for a while. I think they are all scrapped as they were electrical hydraulic and that stuff always fails, making the thing worthless. Except now...
Here are some of my Linhof lensboard mods. I have plenty of lensboards!

Here's my first one in my old studio. https://www.photrio.com/forum/threads/linhof-kardan-color-8x10-just-obtained-first-day.96541/
Here's the first iteration, a prototype, maybe on 1 or 3 made. I have seen it in an old movie. Perhaps 'Funny Face' Audry Hepburn. I may have the wrong movie.
Bob Saloman a member here and former Linhof rep says the First Linhof Kardan Color 8X10 was too costly to manufacture. Notice the ball gimbal on the standard to rail connections. They can move in a very interesting way.

Where's the Swing Movement for each standard ?
I look into this picture, and besides that marvelous Ball Gimbal, I cannot see any Swing mechanism built into the bottom of the standards.
Does it make sense that such configuration does not include Swing, or is it that aformentioned Ball Joints were supposed to provide proper Swing range ?
Correction. The front has same movements as rear with swing zero lock and shift.
The rear has shift and swing with a zero lock?. The front has shift only. Can't tell if the axis tilts have the zero locks mine have.
Middle has shift and a different pedestal as it has no ball gimbal.

Love the Titan SF. I have one too, about the same vintage. Mine is # 81. This one has the original style knobs. Later, they were black. That camera is like a rock. Super rigid. You can use a 450mm lens with it if you use forward base tilt and backward axis tilt. Works great and still rigid. And after a day near the ocean you can take off the lens and bellows and give it a bath in the sink to get the salt off of it!

Not to be a complete idiot, but what did you build? I ask because y'r post #3460 above shows what looks like a bog standard Calumet badged Cambo SC. Good camera well-worth showing off but pretty much as delivered. What did I miss?
I suppose I should post some pix of SC, which is somewhat modified.

Maybe "build" is the incorrect term for this forum? I'm use to Jeep forums where replacing stock parts is called a build even if its minimal.
So far on the Cambo, I replaced the standard ground glass for a brighter screen, cut a few lens boards for various lenses that I don't believe came standard with a Cambo, attached a tape measure along the rail for easy bellows measurements. Soon to add a cold shoe, Fresnel screen, and make a single cord for my wireless trigger instead of using three different connectors. I didn't make any of the pieces by hand but they've been replaced or pieced together. It's been fun either way :)

Thanks for the clarification.
FWIW, new view cameras are usually sold without lenses and lens boards. They're normally sold with backs, and the backs usually contain a focusing panel. The purchaser supplies both. Used cameras are often sold fully equipped and ready to use.
When your fresnel arrives, make sure to put it behind the ground glass. That's between the gg and you. If you put it in front of the gg, the gg will be out of register with the film holder, not a good thing.

My Intrepid 8x10. The back has been removed so I can insert my own 4x10 masking panel. It fits between the bellows and the back. In theory I could also do 5x8. It all depends if the film holder is inserted parallel or at right angles to the mask long axis.

note snake boots-this is Texas!
Very smart!
A snake bite can ruin your day. We had a rash of copperheads and timber rattlers in the NE. We didn't even keep track of all the kids bit by copperheads. None died, but you know it was usually painful. Never knew of anyone bit by a timber rattler.

Jac, where is the NE? Do you mean the Boundary Waters?
Chicago area Des Plaines River had a lot of poisonous snakes, they cleared them by bounty in 1920 I thought. But never got them all it seems. http://www.wheelinghistoricalsociety.com/album5/Albump1.htm
Southern Illinois they are a protected species. I have stepped right over one sleeping in a coil on a warm rock on a cold day. We close a road for them. http://thesouthern.com/news/local/environment/shawnee-forest-s-snake-road-closes-today-to-protect-endangered/article_d35bd734-20a6-11e8-ad33-1771b87b0cd3.html#3
My boots say “95 of snake bites are below the knee.” I hope the Texas rattlers have read that.
My co-worker got bit by a diamondback. He panicked and ran (probably the worst thing you can do). Then he had an allergic reaction to the anti-venom, which is made with horse serum. After he survived, I kidded him about how anything horse-related could disagree with him bc he was a bona-fide cowboy.
I also carry an Extractor snake bite kit, which some debate if it’s effective at all. Some jobs I walk 10 miles across rattlesnake country, and do my best to avoid the rocks and brush piles. Local K-9 search and rescue team here have their dogs injected with anti-venom and give the dog ten (10) Benadryl 25mg capsules if they get bit in the field. So I carry Benadryl too bc if it’s good enough for a dog...

Jac, where is the NE? Do you mean the Boundary Waters?
Sorry I was not clear. I'm originally from Rhode Island (RI) and North-East means to me the New England states above RI, and from my experience Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and up-state New York. The copperhead experiences were in rural Connecticut - an area no longer rural. You've seen the depressing change, too.

[... snip great post ...]
I also carry an Extractor snake bite kit
In the early Fifties our snake kit was a tourniquet, a pointed razor and rubber suction cups. The only use my peers found found for them was sucking out pimples.
When it came to copperhead bites the advice was, "Just walk it off."
I just finished a HAER job in Louisiana with airboat access and 4x5 setups the marsh. Big fat water moccasins abounding. I was wearing waders with strap-on snake guards. Priceless. I look carefully as I walk.
Maybe Oren can start a snake safety thread.
