My wife had her brother, a coppersmith and sculptor, make this for me. It's an all copper 8x10 camera that sits on a Zone VI tripod in my garden. Pretty cool eh ?

Thats very cool indeed.

Unless, of course, it's in the sun, in which case it might be hot. ;)

It would be even nicer after it gets rusted.

Copper don't rust, it turns a nice green color after exposed to the weather for a while..

Yes, I meant that but my poor english didn't work for it.
What was the right word for that, starts from "P"?

It will develop a patina.

And it will be amazing! Congratulations.

That'd be a camera my wife would buy ;-) I bet he could sell a bunch here if he made them.

Nice! But can the tripod take the weather sitting in the garden?

...... can the tripod take the weather sitting in the garden?

Probably. But then again, I don't care as this is really the only good thing this tripod's ggod for. I've stopped using it years ago after I wrecked an 8x10 because of it. I have a Ries and a Manfrotto for my "real" cameras.

if you want to speed up the patina-ing
pour something kind of acidic on it.
roofers had a traditon of drinking lots
of beer while putting the copper up.
... it wasn't hard for them to find something acidic
to pour over the roof + flashing ...

Ernie, that green stuff that forms the patina color unique to copper is called "verdigris" (from Old French words for "Greek green").

Copper is worth a few quid now so you had better make sure it doesn't 'disappear' of to China.

Indeed, and that's exactly what my wife thought when she had it made and gave it to me on my birthday. What a pleasant surprise that was.

Cool, every LF photog should have one of this in his garden... kind of a tribute to the art and a lot better than statues, vases if you ask me :)
As a side note, Copper do rust to some extent when exposed to air. The before mentioned "patine" in the case of copper, is just a non-technical name for what is called a passivation layer in materials science (composed of copper oxide), which protects the bulk from further oxidation.

Obviousy not as cool as yours, but here is our windchime, made by a friend of mine.

Also out of copper.
