Hi Gustavo,
The first lens looks just like a Bausch and Lomb projection petzval. Is it cut for waterhouse stops? Do you know the focal length? Mine is roughly a 15" focal length and it just covers 8x10. It barely squeaks onto the 11x14 focused at head and shoulders distance. I think mine is an f5 or somewhere around there.
Here is a link for the Dallon. Judging from the catalog the 12" only covers 4x5, but that is never gospel and you might get enough coverage to make you happy.

no it does not have the cut . it looks like it may cover over 11 X14 this guy is huge 8 inches tall and over 3 inches diameter , the link is no good can you email it ?
I will look at the link thanks

Gustavo, I concur. I have one that looks like that and it is about 15" f4 - f5. Try it on 1114 at close up and see. A vignette doesn't hurt. Excellent lens. It is a petzval. Sometimes if you take it out in good light and look all over the black front rim you may find an engraving with the focal length. I have a 24" like that.

Gracias Jaime !! now all I need is a working holder
PS the glass on the lens is a 9 +

So what flavor of 1114 did you finally end up with. Western Bellows is just finishing up a new bellows for the Deardorff V11. I plan to use it this summer.

Gustavo, did the petzval come with any type of mounting flange? Sometimes you can find the pieces that attached these lenses to the "balopticon" projector and use them to mount to a board.

Wow Jim, bringing out the big guns! Got a special project in mind or just hate to see that 11x14 sitting around? :)

By the way Jim how much does the 24" lens weigh? Is it also a f4/5?

tongs & hammers

done with the 24" on 711. It is quite petite. It is an f8 lens. Haven't seen another like it! No gigantic plans for the V11, just some exercise for it.......and me.

Great photo Jim, sounds and looks like a pretty nice lens. Workout is right, but you've been lifting all those heavy petzvals for so long, I think you'll manage :)

Gus,

This guy from Apug has some incredibly beautiful stuff. Plasticca is one of the lenses he uses.

Jim, how big are the lensboards on that Deardorff V11? Considering the kind of lenses you like to use, I'm guessing that the lensboard is big and that the front standard is up to the task of taking heavy lenses.

It uses the same 6X6 'dorff boards but the front standard is significantly sturdier than the 810 Dorff's. Jim

The mark is very similar to a Bausch & Lomb lens that I have here. Even the external features of the one I have are very similar. Mine seems to be a magic lantern lens, and still has the very large extra optic on the back. However, when I remove that large optic and that brass part, the remaining barrel is very much a Petzval type design. The one issue I have with mine is that the spacer between the two rear optics is missing. If I knew the dimension of that spacer, I could make a replacement and have a fully working lens.

I agree that looks like a Bausch & Lomb symbol. I've attached photos of my 15" lens and the markings. Jim mentioned his lens had the focal length marked around the front element ring, mine doesn't have any marking except what is pictured.

Gordon what is the focal length of your B&L lantern petzval. If I have the same focal length lens I could measure the spacer for you. I've attached photos of my 15" lens and the markings.

Thanks Brian !!
form the photos it appears that we have the same lens ,does yours take whaterhouse washers?

Hello Brian,

I could not get mine to focus, because the rear elements were not properly placed. So unfortunately I am not sure about effective focal length. It did seem to have lots of coverage, though I only have a 4x5 to judge that. I will try to get some physical dimensions of the lens, then post that later. Thanks!

Gustavo, mine does not take waterhouse stops.

Let me know Gordon, maybe we can figure something out. If I don't have it maybe someone out there does.

Another thought is that the placement might be proportional, since the design is basically the same. What that would mean is that the proportion of the rear element diameter to the spacer should be very close across all Bausch & Lomb lenses of this type. So even if mine is not exactly the same physical size, the spacer to rear optic diameter should retain the same proportion. Anyway, if I am not completely crazy on that idea, if either of you could list the optic diameter, and the spacer length, then I can figure out what size to machine a replacement. If nothing else, it should at least get me much closer to a working lens.

Ciao!

Gordon, I measured the spacer from the 15" B&L petzval and the dimensions are just barely over 4mm width and 84mm diameter. Hope this helps.

Awesome! That gives me a good target. I will probably get more time in the machine shop tomorrow, though I have been putting more into my Polaroid 900 conversion lately. I will probably make a spacer from aluminum, once I calculate the dimensions.

Thanks again!
