Hello all. Is there a difference (in design or otherwise) between the "W" and the "SW"? I read somewhere (on this forum) that Nikon used the "S" to designate their 7-blade Copal shutter. Although I hate to A-S-S-U-M-E, is it somewhat safe to conclude that a "W" lens built around a 5-bladed Copal shutter? TIA...

Is there a 120 W? The W are the fast non-wide angle designs [Plasmats???]

The SW are the wide angle slower speed lenses.

There is a 135mm W and a 105mm. But 120mm W?

Well... you tell me? Here's what I just found on the "Lets make a killing on the S/H fees" web site...

120mm Nikkor-W f8 view camera lens Copal 0 Sinar board Item number: 110249270221

Interestingly enough... another person is listing a SW variant.

I'm at a loss...

If there were such an animal as a 120W, it would be between the 105W and 135W in size; this beast is plainly 120SW in size

That's an SW.

You can still find most of the Nikon LF info there. You might have to check the non-UK sites

The only Nikkor 120mm lenses I know about are the f/8 -SW (super-wide-angle) and the -AM (macro-only). Sounds like a typo in there somewhere.

<Is there a difference (in design or otherwise) between the "W" and the "SW"?>

B&H's (early 90s) most excellent source book describes the SW series as being in copal shutters and having covering power of 105-106 degrees. Conversley, the W series (copals) claims covering power of 70-73 degrees stopped down.

SW lenses listed where: SW 65 f4, SW 75 f4.5, SW 90 f4.5, SW 90 f8, SW 120 f8 (image circle 213mm @ f22) and SW 150 f8. W lenses where: W 105 f5.6, W 135 f5.6, W 150 f5.6, W 180 f5.6, W 210 f5.6, W 240 f5.6, W 300 f5.6 and W 360 f6.5.

Only other 120 lens listed was the Nikkor AM 120 f5.6. This list is duplicated exactly in the 1996-97 USA Nikon Full Product Line brochure for Nikons SW and W large format lenses.

I believe that image circle figure you gave has been transposed somewhere along the line, David. Actual image circle is 312mm @ f22, handily just covering 8x10. I have never heard of a W-series 120mm Nikkor though.
