Will It work. I just acquired it and am wanting to know coverage. I have a very sharp and light 19" f11 APO Artar in ilex 4. The lenses are close enough to wonder which will be better. Oh, and the 16.5 Ronar is in a nice copal 3.

Thanks in advance Tim

The 420mm Apo Ronar has an image circle of ~320mm, and it can barely cover 8x10. I don't think it can work for 12x20.

I don't have a 420mm Ronar so I can't say what it will cover, but my guess is that it would not cover the 12x20. But I bet that it would cover 11x14. I have a 240mm Ronar that easily covers 8x10 with some room for movements. My 19" Artar covers 12x20.

Sounds like you need to try the 420. My 300mm Apo-Ronar covers 8x10 easily despite Rodenstocks listed IC.

My 19" is beautifull on the 12x20 and has a good range of movements. The 420 actually came with my 11x14 and does cover it. I was just seeing how far I may be able to push the 420.
Thanks everyone

You can check out the technical information for Rodenstock lenses at this site. For some reason the 420mm Apo Ronar isn't listed so I assume that it is not a current model.

Another site with more information on the coverage of the Apo Ronars and other Rodenstock lenses. This one includes the 420mm. I have only used my 420 Apo Ronar on a 5x7 camera and it produces very sharp images.

All Apo Ronar lenses are discontinued. The 420 covered 323mm @ f22 @ infinity and was discontinued in the USA at the end of 1990.

These lenses (ronars) cover more than published specs say! People who sight these specs should try the lenses first. I have the 480mm Ronar and it covers well above the 396mm published. I never had a 420mm version so I can't say for sure it covers (11x14) but for contact printing, I would guess it should be fine.
