I have found this online calculator to be quite handy for reference every so often. Thought I would share in case you haven't seen it. Anyone use similar tools?

Hi Evan,
I have created a Scanning Calculator (http://www.prepressexpress.com/pages/scanning/scanning/calc.html) on my site. Its a pretty simple java calculator.
Just plug in the size and click calculate. There is also a table for the small formats.
Im still working on the print ratio calculator (http://www.prepressexpress.com/pages/scanning/scanning/pcalc.html) but i posted it anyway. It calculates backwards but its accurate.

Ian,
Curious why the resolution on your calculator is base 500, that is 2000,2500, etc. I routinely scan at 2400, 3600, 1800 --- curious if this is based on your scanner hardware or your preference to resolution

Hi Joe,
I chose the resolutions in my calculator for 2 reasons.
The first is the most popular resolutions we scan at. We get allot of orders that say scan this at X megabytes.
Depending on the film it ruffs out to be close to one of those.
The second corresponds to the hardware stops on the drum scanner. Most of them lock in at multiples of 500.
When I have more time, i fully intend to fill in the blanks between the numbers. I also want to rewrite the app to combine both the calculators.
I just need to brush up on my java and math skills :o

Wouldn't it be worth including lines per inch and 'Q factor' as an output option?

Hi Helen,
Those are more for pre press and not for photography. They are an old way of determining scanning res. The same with the old DCS format and its res setting of Res 10, 20.......
Most of the calculators i have seen do not have them. I modeled mine on the majority.
In reality, DPI is really SPI. But everyone seems to use them interchangeably.
Now if i could only figure out how to make a link that would auto fill the fields with numbers. Anyone know javascript?
