I have a 65mm Schneider mounted in a recessed lens board. Unfortunately its quite a challenge to get a normal shutter release attached. It seems that a small adapter is in order. Have any that you recommend?

b&h offers this one - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/233735-REG/Gepe_603007_Cable_Release_Extension_f_.html
but $25 seems a bit much. but i'll pay it if its the best way to solve the problem.

That's the one you want.

When I tried to attach a cable release to my 65mm Nikkor mounted in a recessed Horseman board, I had to take the lens off the board, attach the cable release and then reattach the lens to the recessed board. Of course this means the cable release stays on the lens, no switching without some hassle. But it works for me, since I only have one lens with a recessed board.

There are also L-shaped adapters for this purpose, like this one:

I have the Gepe cable release extension on all four of my recessed lens boards. It is the way to go. I find that once mounted on the lens and you are positioning the lens on the recessed lens board you can adjust the lens to have the extension fit into the corner of the recessed lens board. I find that assembling the lens and board this way keeps the cable release (once attached) pointed away from your lens. This was the main problem I had with the "L" shaped adapters; they swivel and can swing a long cable release right in front of your lens.

I agree with Joshua. Pay the bucks for the Gepe release. It won't let you down.
