Lovely image, Colin! Compared to that, it's no great loss if you can't see mine. :) But I just checked and it loads fine for me, both PC and Mac.

Mick - thanks for commenting. What kind of a system/browser are you viewing it on? I am on a calibrated iMac with a gamma set to 2.2. The negative was scanned and then post-processed to match the display. The processing consisted of post-capture sharpening, a couple of curves and a couple of dodge/burn layers. The way I see the image on my monitor is from roughly Zone III for the shadow between the two rocks in front to Zone VIII for highlights. And it was a very contrasty scene to begin with.

That being said, yes, I still need to determine proper development - this was the first batch after determining ISO for this combo. I still need to pin down the exact development times for N- and N+.

Took a few minutes for your image to show up on my end, Marko, probably what Mick was commenting on as well. I edited my reply accordingly. That is a lovely sharp image with wonderful tones on my monitor- makes me wonder why I ever stopped using rodinal.

Hi Marko,

Colin is right, your posting didn't contain the image for a while so I made a lame attempt at humor.

Your shot is lovely, and has very good tones on my monitor. I've never used anything but HP5+/HC110, so was interested to see your use of Rodinal.

Nice shot Marko. I've never tried using Rodinal....I've always found it easy to use PMK or HC110 Dil B. I thought they stopped making Rodinal.

Marko
11-Feb-2008, 15:22
No problem, Mick. I didn't realize it was a joke simply because everything looked in ordnung on my side. But yeah, I can easily see the joke in the context. :)

I used to love Ilford films in Microphen, way back in my film days. Starting with HP4 and on. I found Rodinal interesting with FP4 back then too, but not too much and it was easier for me to simply standardize on one developer and two films.

Now that I'm getting back to film again, this time LF and MF, I find myself having a lot of fun running film/developer combo tests. This one was done on FP4+ in Rodinal 1+50, and the next in line is Delta 100. And I can already say that I really love the stuff.

David, there are a few Rodinal clones out there and the original is also being sold again. I got mine at Freestyle. It's cheap, very easy to use as one-shot and it keeps long. It yields very little fog and very sharp negatives. Their processing instructions are almost spot-on, at least for the films I tried so far.

The only downside is - it may not be as good for faster films. I plan on running a bunch of tests with Tri-X and HP5+ in DD-X, D76 and HC110.

Marko, hope it's not an important shot. Now I remember why I stopped using rodinal, because I had run out of APX 100 and tried shooting delta 100! The look is definitely not for everyone, though some really like it.

Of course not. I usually run a MF roll first, find out the ballpark exposure and dev time and then fine tune with sheet film. It's mostly a blank light gray wall on the north side of my place shot through a white diffuser. Easily replaceable too, since it's always the same frame. :)

Seriously, I heard the same thing about Delta 100, but I also heard that its reciprocity is very tame and linear, so it might be an interesting long exposure film.

Thanks very much! I used a Schneider 90mm lens on a Shen-Hao 4x5. I took two shots with the back shifted all the way to the left and right extremes and then stitched them together in Photoshop. Kind of the poor man's 4x10 I suppose.

Hmmm, I'm not sure about that. I think we were all camped out here:

35°55'7.79"N, 111°32'34.93"W

which is slightly north and west of your marker. That is, unless you hiked around to that protrusion. I know that I didn't, although I did move around to get a similar perspective to yours....

Sheldon,

A funny story about Smith Rock: I went on a 5-day field trip of the high desert with 24 4th & 5th graders that ended at Smith Rock. There were two of us dads and ten moms. That final day was hot...and we were exhausted. The plan for Smith Rock was to hike down into canyon and up the other side to see a rock climbing demonstration. The moms had reached their limit...they announced they would stay near the parking lot and cut up bagels in the shade. It wasn't negotiable.

Then the rock climber showed up. Sun-bleached blond ponytail. Bronze body. Rock-climber physique. Flashy smile. Suddenly the moms were refreshed and ready to hike through hell to learn about rock climbing. The dads cut up bagels in the shade.

Thanks, Steve. It's in one of the local parks here, it's so small I don't think it even has an official name. :)

<edit>

I just realized that this may sound a bit smug, which was not my intention. So, "here" is the North-West San Fernando Valley, right in the foot of Santa Susana mountains. They form a ragged foothill strewn with rocks of all sizes and there is a variety of parks, large and small sprinkled at the bottom, as well as lots of trails going up into the mountains. The park in question is about half the size of the footbal field, with some recreation facilities and a bunch of rocks and trees at one edge of it.

If it has a name, I don't know it. The closest points of interest are the Rocky Point, Santa Susana Pass and Topanga Canyon.

I think you might find this a bit funny. Its been named the Flying Fickle Finger of Fate by local cavers. It's in Rustys Cave in northwest Georgia, USA. It's not LF though, I'd love to visit this place with a 4x5 someday.

Beautiful composition and tonality, Eric. I'd hang that on my wall.

I often like square format photos. If I may suggest, I think your photo works very well in that format as well. What do you think?

Taken last weekend in Cayucos (Morro Bay), CA. Morro Rock is in the background. I shot it on a borrowed Linhof Technika, 250mm lens, Tri-X 320 film...red filter? I'm not sure. Cropped to square, scanned, and then digitally split-toned (because I care about you guys).

Here are two 8x10s from hiking Red Rock Canyon (Mojave Desert) this past weekend. 240mm on the first, 360mm on the second. Tri-x 320, Red and polarizer filters on the first, none on the second. A green filter might have done nicely for the second, but I have none (yet?). Have 4 more 8x10s to develop, and a hand full of 4x5s as well. Does anyone else see the triangle in the second one? That's what caught my attention.

Very nice palette in the lichen Edwin. Is the teal color the underlying rock or a lichen?

I don't think there is really much teal there but the contrast with the pink rock might make the more neutral or bluish lichens look more green than they really are. In answer to your question the rock is a conglomerate of pieces that range pink through orange (there isn't much of it showing through in this case). Everything else is lichen with a bit of dried up moss here and there. Here's a detail:

31-May-2008, 16:41
:)Thanks Marko. I can't say enough about the 5x12 format. Film is about the same price as 8x10, most 8x10 lenses will cover it, it's (relatively) easy to pack around in a single backpack, and I can still load hold holders on my lap in a dark bathroom or tent. And it makes a great size contact print- big enough to notice across the room and small enough to retain some degree of intimacy. In any event, the gg is as big as I can fully see and compose on under the darkcloth without having to 'remember' what's in each corner, which makes it very easy to work with.

Thank you Tim. I'd probably pick Kalaloch/Ruby Beach area. It's a ~20 mile stretch along 101 west of the Hoh Rainforest, with about 6 beach access trails. I have a hard time getting out there in the summer because it's just so busy unless you get there really early in the morning. But some of the beaches do get very long at low tide, so you can always find some isolated spots. I usually find Beach 1 and 2 south of Kalaloch the quietest, Ruby beach the busiest. Ruby has the sea stacks, most of the other beaches are great for bluffs, trees and long open stretches. On a long day I usually hit each beach and spend an hour or so there, so it's usually feels the most productive. It's by far the most accessible.

But then LaPush/Rialto Beaches are also excellent, but a little more time consuming and strenuous- specifically Third Beach-Toleak Point. But there are more dramatic spires and sea stacks along this route. Second Beach has reopened and that's very cool, about a 3/4 mile trip in, but the beach can get a little locked in at high tide. A very nice milder hike is to come in from the Neah Bay trailhead to Point of the Arches/Shi-Shi- probably the most stunning coastal rock forms are around this area. Plus there are fabulous tide pools at low tide. It's 10 miles round trip- some of it through the sloggiest ankle deep mud I've ever seen, but most of it is along the beach between Point of the Arches and Shi-Shi. It's fairly remote up there, I've never seen more than 2 other hikers on any trip any time of year- but I tend to keep to the weekdays.

Hope some if this helps, I obviously have a hard time deciding where to go most mornings!

Thanks much - sounds like some good advice - Ruby and Rialto areas were my first choices from the online research I've done - thanks for the first hand opinions. If all goes perfectly, I may be able to spend an evening at Rialto and then the following am in the Ruby area.

Some of mine, mostly shot with an Ebony SW23 on Velvia.

First and second one are from the Isle of Arran, Scotland.
Third one is from Milford Haven in Cornwall and fourth one is from Sussex UK.

Wow, I thought everything is grey in the UK. Nice color work.

Thank you very much, Don and Kirk. I am very flattered that you like those pictures.
There are plenty of excellent opportunities in the UK. And no, it does not always rain there ... :)

Ruins of an old bridge. It's not a wall anymore, just some well aligned stones...

I've been enjoying the 4x10" ratio lately! (split 8x10 sheets with a cut darkslide). This is my first attempt to do a vertical 4x10! It seems alot more tricky to find a composition that works well with such a long vertical image. I also did a horizontal 4x10 on the plants growing out of the water (which was the one I was looking forward to!) but by my lack of note keeping I ended up shooting that 1/2 on top of another shot :-( haha!

I like the play of light on those rocks. It came out exactly as I saw it, but am not sure others will see the beauty too (maybe it's too dark)...

Ben,

At first, for some reason, I thought it was leaves on top of some rocks... I like it. You are right, I bet it'd make a killer desktop background too. (Not in a bad way or anything...)

Here's one more taken many years ago when I lived in England. It's part of a cliff in Cornwall shot with my Wista and 90mm SA.

The second image was taken in Antelope Canyon AZ with my Canham and 90mm SA

One from Joshua Tree! I did some mild rock climbing to get this shot! Though, later I found out that there was an easier way around the huge pile of rocks. It was fun none the less! 90mm, yellow filter & polarizer

Sentinel Dome, Yosemite. It is, after all, just one really big rock:

Big rocks, Vernal falls in the distance (also Yosemite):

And some of the rocks at Yosemite falls that in the spring are probably under water:

Yep, my Ebony has more rise than my 120mm APO-Symmar (Pre-L) can cover, but I kind of like the falloff.

A recent carbon print...but actually a little disappointing. I remember spending a long time composing this image -- but once printed, I can't help but think that I should have pointed the camera just a little bit more down. It bugs me enough that the next time I go to Yosemite, this image will be re-taken.

Vaughn,

For me I prefer envisioning the center maybe 50 percent of the scene as a vertical format as maybe a little more focused on the tree and water as major subject matter. Or maybe it is the large dark face of the chasm on the right maybe pulls my attention too much. Hurray for carbon, nice tonal range, I'd like to see your orginal print sometime. (BTW I'm getting closer but slowly to starting my own carbon printing.)

Wilbur -- one of the reasons I am on the fence on the second one, is that it is actually the top half of a dyptic (sp?). The second, lower, negative has problems, so I tried the upper neg as a single image. So the presented image is conceptionally incomplete. But the qualities of the negative were so beautiful that I had to print it. Sometimes our failures can be very instructional!

This roving stone gathered less moss than its friends resting above.

“How did I get here?” it keeps asking . Perhaps it was asleep when our most recent ice age rolled it down from Canada. (Clearwater Nat’l Forest, N. Idaho)

Sam, I'm sure there are some individual rocks there, but I think most of the crags are one BIG rock! I did a rock climb there when I moved to the area 10 years ago and haven't been back since. Kind of a shame, given that they are only a 2 hour drive away!

There are so many beautiful rock photos here... I thought I'd try something a little different.

I forget exactly which bridge this was near, it was not Bixby. I parked the car and looked over the edge and saw this old rusted, burnt motorcycle carcass 50 or 60 feet below.
