Henry, I really like the color of the image.
Could you tell me the paper and developer combination?
I can only see the fatigue from the bulging muscles in her legs.

Paper? Developer?

HP5 and Xtol 1:3 in hangers.

Epson flatbed scan.

Printed on my 7600 with Epson Semimatte 250 at 24 inches wide. Toned using Ken Lee's old quadtone method and converted to RGB. This is a small version of the same file I send to the printer. The prints look like this small example. Or the other way around.

I know you were looking for a traditional answer. Which might be Bergger VCCB Style in Ansco 130 or in that neighborhood.

Domenico,
Very moving photo. It really got to me.

Frank,
Your photos get to me as well...just a little differently. I keep thinking about your work when reviewing our photoshoots and can't help but think you could bring something special to our editorial shots. We tend to be very product oriented but on the rare occasion when we do editorial everyone loves it.

My friend Marina was visiting this weekend, and was a good enough sport not just to sit for me but to tolerate me throwing different hats and clothes (and lack of clothes) at her. I was mostly using my old rollei, but shot a handful of 4x5 on the toyo, with a 210mm rodenstock geronar at f8 for about 1/15th by the window in failing light.

and if someone can remind me of the painting I was thinking about when we shot this one, I will be hugely grateful...

Two recent platinum/palladium prints (one printed this week, one other one last week). The one in the redwoods was taken on this past New Years Day, the one in Yosemite National Park was taken in August of 2005.

These are part of a continuing series of environmental portraits of my triple boys.

Both taken with an 8x10 Zone IV using a Fuji W 300mm/5.6. Both are on Ilford FP4+, rated at 125ASA, developed in Ilford Universal PQ Developer.

The one in the redwoods ...f45 at 60 seconds. The one above Omstead Point in YNP...f64 at 1/8 second.

Monty - Thank you for the comments, I appreciate it. I'm new here so I'm sure I'll post more in the future, i like this site. I absolutely love the wet plate you posted. The lack of detail in the hair adds to the photo I think.

Domenico - I really enjoy the shallow depth of field in your photo, its just perfect. Plus, I checked out your myspace and I automatically like you because you have Egon Schiele in your top friends! Schiele is possibly my all time favorite artist, if it wasn't for David Bowie I'd probably never have known Schiele.

Thank you Kevin.
Wait a moment why David Bowie?
He was my idol in my ehm..younger years, and I still think he has been the more innovative and influential rock musicians in a certain rock stream.
Now that I think to the cover of Heroes, that makes some sense, is there something I don't know about it?

Five or so years ago I was reading something about David Bowie and they mentioned his taste in art and how the cover for Heros and Lodger were inspired by the poses of Egon Schiele. A week later I found myself in a book store buying three Egon Schiele books. My Father introduced me to Bowie when I was young so its something that stuck and grew stronger over time. I'd have to say my favorite Bowie is the so called "Berlin Trilogy"

I saw a great show of Schiele's drawings at the Neue Galerie in New York a couple of years ago. It had a very punk rock feel and one picture in particular could of been a young Iggy Pop.

I've been trying to get to the Neue Galerie for awhile, I think I just love Austrian painters as a whole. Iggy Pop is apparently a fan of Schiele...

SHiele does have a modern feel, his self portraits are self-deprecating and probably rightly so, since he wasn't a great human beings in the ethical meaning of the word.
ALthough I like a lot almost all of his work, this is the one I have hanging in my bedroom, which is completely different from all of his other paintings.
More than Iggy Pop I have always associated him to SId Vicious....

Perfectly lovely Dave. But I'm most impressed that you got a 16 f4 Eastman mated to a Shen somehow. Did you cut threads directly into the lens board? Snapshot of the streetcar headlamp hanging on the shen? It has a fine look. This is the big brass Petzval right?

13-Feb-2008, 11:28
Thanks for the kind words! I bought the lens from Tracey Storer off this Forum. He had it mounted in a Cambo board with the threads cut right into the board. I took it to a local machine shop and had them cut the board down to Sinar size to fit the Shen. It BARELY fits. And the lens is probably too heavy for the front standard, but it works. This is a scan of the neg, but I just made a lovely platinum print of the shot - thanks to Kerik!

There is such a lovely victorian (or is it simply ageless) quality about Katies work - I really like it and urge any one to check out her website.

Large format to me is more about rich tonality than super sharp focus - I can get super sharp focus with a cheap digital camera - but the rich tonality (and the ability to play with light and shade) is something best done with large format.

Good work Katie!

Two shots of my niece, same living room, similar light, but the Christmas Holidays were years apart. They grow up too quickly.

Matt,

I like the pictures. The composition of the first one is very interesting. BTW, is she the model you mentioned a few days ago that might be available for Chamonix second shootout?

Thanks.

Gerry,

Your pictures remind me of Michael Smith's series of jail birds, also taken with 8x10. But his are in color. Documentary style too. I just feel sad for their ruined life.

Great portrait Donald, the tones and details are wonderful. What a great face for this type of portrait!
Is there some kind of scanner issue in the upper right corner? His hair looks to be in a video feedback loop.

I have to agree that you've got a nice portrait there Donald. It really brings out the rough character of this fellow's face.

Thanks Brian and Mel. Brian I think that I must have had a corner of the print come off the scanner glass...I see what you addressed and it is not in the print. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

Thanks Hugo, I have to check out the Michael Smith images(color 8x10 film !! now there is a expensive proposition).

Donald like the headshot and expression, thou I found the right side composition a bit awkward.

Domenico,

I have to say I consider you one of the best portraitist on the forum from the photos I've seen. And this particular photo proves that "title" as well. The one thing that distracts me is her arm in the shot. To me, it's as if the arm was separately smoothed from the rest of the photo.

Besides that, I love the life captured in the photograph. Honest and real emotion.

Bravissimo!

According to the traditional portrait photographers, you should never be able to see the back of an arm ;) Here expression however more then compensates this estheticly less attractive side.

Thanks to all of you.

The arm.
I actually thought that it is an important compositional element of the image.
I am not trying to defend the image at any cost.
I am very open to criticism and I am also aware that nobody will ever be able to please everybody in anything he/she does.

Portraiture for me is really more like a landscape.
I really like the shape of the back of her arm and how it act as "support" for the face.
And the image is not intended as a flattery, although the Beauty of this woman, really comes through. I can see also something else coming through, that is in opposition to the open laughter, almost a hint of "creepiness" for a lack of better word.

So many levels here, like all great work. I see scorn, glee, kindness, intelligence and beauty in equal measure. Just outstanding Domenico.

Domenico, I had to go back and look at the "arm" after reading through some of the critiques as I don't know any of the "rules" of portraiture. I must say I totally dis-agree. Her shoulder sets her attitude perfectly. It's very much a very important element for this portrait. Any of us that have been given the "air" by a woman are most familiar with this side of the shoulder. Again, it's perfect.
