Mainly I am trying to find if the image circle is different and by how much?
I plan on using it on a 12x20. Will it cover???
Thanks again for all your help.

Hi Tim,
the Symmar f5.6/360 was mounted in Compound IV shutters. As this shutters where out of production, the lens was mounted in a shutter size 3 and stopped down to f6.8. The effective focal length of the Symmar 360 is 358mm and the image circle is 500mm at f16, so it doesn't covers 12x20 with full sharpness at the edges. The Symmar 355 has the same effective focal lenght and the same image circle.

Hi Tim
you can use only the rear part of the Symmar. With the Symmar 355mm and 360mm you will get a lens of 1:12/620mm. The angle of view is 40° and stopped down to f/16 it's nearly as good as the whole lens.

P.S. I like your images.

Thanks,
As long as the image circle of the 355 is the same as the image circle of the 360 I will be fine for 12x20 stopped down, since it is being used for contact printing.

No problem John, my addition is getting sloppy due to all the multi variat calc I have been doing at school!! My brain is fried!!

Tim,

So far as I understand the Symmar convertible in Compound and in Copal should cover the same. The difference in aperture is due to the difference in shutter, as others have noted.

As for coverage, the 355-360 Symmar convertible should cover 12X20 with an inch or so of movement with the two elements. I would not be optimistic that it will cover 12X20 adequately with a single element, even for contact printing. For best results with the single element, close it down to f/45 or f/64, use the single element behind the shutter rather than in front of it, and and use an orange or green filter to reduce image degradation from longitudinal chromatic aberration.

Thank you Sandy,
I will be only using the 355 as is. I have an APO Ronar 600 for anything long I need. I also just picked up a 19" Artar in Ilex 4. I will hopfully go out this weekend and do a test shot or two. as the camera was just set up. I am waiting for a film holder, thats the only thing I need to make my first shot with the new camera.

Cheers
Tim
