Here is one more, titled 4 flooded trees, made at Kerkdriel, the Nertherlands, again with my Technika and a 90mm SA lens, on Tmax 400, rated at 200 iso. Probably f/32 at some 4 seconds. January 14 2011, high water in the river Maas.

When I started my photographic passion, I could not imagine myself shooting in B&W - I was shooting color, and felt as if something was missing if I tried a BW shot. During the years my attitude changed completely, I stopped shooting color (except family snapshots and portraits) and have even lost interest in properly developing those color films already exposed - they were stored in the fridge in the meantime.
But what with them? Surely not throw away. So I tried developing them in my BW developer of choice - Rodinal. And here is one of the results...

Lightbender, yes :D . Or more precisely, Fuji CDU II is a color duplicating positive film balanced for tungsten light (E-6 process). And yes, it turned out wonderfully... It was only my second shot at developing it, the first one was with time a little too short (10min vs. 15min for this one). I have developed ~9 sheets, but only this one is going to be presented (the other fail technically, compositionally, aesthetically,...)

I shot these with a hundred year old 9x12 magazine camera, called Murer's Express Newness E. kind of like the Holga of Large Format. a big meniscus and a guillotine shutter. I'm still learning this camera, but it is very fun. sometimes in the near future I'm getting me a petzval, it's been on my wishlist for a long time.

My experience looking at collodion is pretty limited, but these seem to have a crisp clarity and local contrast beyond what I recall seeing before. Is the aluminum substrate doing that? These are really impressive to look at even on my monitor.

Thanks Randy. Unfortunately, like a lot of people here I imagine, my printing is always way behind my shooting; I have a backlog of negatives that I periodically go through to see if anything is worth exploring. So even though I just printed this for the first time, I actually shot it seven years ago and I can't remember the details. Maybe I should write that stuff down. Anyway though, I can tell you that it was made with a Toyo 4x5 and a standard lens, a 210 I think. Film was T-Max 100, which is odd as I've never shot that much-there's nothing wrong with it, it's just not my personal preference. But let's see, what else, well, I do wish the rocks were in sharper focus (hard to see on your screen, I know) but at the time I couldn't figure out quite how to do that. :)
Oh, and it's printed digitally. Lately, I've been having fun playing around with different tones using fill layers. This one is called Goldenrod (Hex #DAA520 if that means anything to you).
That's about all I got. Thanks again for the kind words. I appreciate it.
Austin
Thanks Austin. For what it's worth, I have processed 4X5 negs that sat in the holder for 8 years after I exposed them :(
Likewise, I am going through many old 35mm, 120, and 4X5 negs that I shot many, many years ago (and never was able to get a good darkroom print) and scanning them and finding there is actually a good image hiding in there.

Here's something to compare, I keep coming back to this tree over the years. First shot was 2004 on 35mm with 20mm lens, second was just last month on 4x5 with a 58mm. How things change. I wanted a train in the recent shot, but alas the sun and railroad do not cooperate.

Thank you. :) Yes, normal exposure and normal processing. Scanned on a V750, stitched in photoshop, no other manipulation. If only I could buy 5x7 Velvia for a reasonable price I wouldn't have to stitch 5x4. Or I could go the half 10x8 cut into 5x8 route I guess...

Trees & Framework
I wrote this description on flickr:
"The trees are at the south side of a church that was seriously damaged by a fire.
To prevent a collapse of the building a huge construction was built from parts
of a regular scaffold.
They just built this framework around and through the trees.
This is the real scene as it was.
I had some problems with vignetting, I made a test shoot with Polaroid 664
which is smaller than the used 4x5 film.
As I shifted a lot I didn't see the vignetting on the focusing screen and it wasn't visible
on the Polaroid because the Polaroid film is not centered in the middle of the focusing screen when used
with the Polaroid 405 back. For shots with 4x5 camera and a lot of shifting I use
a full 4x5 instant picture for test picture now - OK it's more expansive but I'm on the safe side.
And I use wide angle lenses now. At that time my widest lenses were a Nikkor W 105
and a Schneider Symmar 150.
The composition isn't satisfying me, the small shrub on the bottom left is to dark
and isn't helpful (apart frrom producing oxgene).
I tried some cropping and ended up with the original slide."

These evergreens in the N. Cascades (Wash. state) have just shaken-off their winter snow – it’s May and the sun is returning – but the snow they shook off had dusted several portions of this curving road. I had to slow down in several places to see the road better. Not the best place to leave it! The road is heading Eastward, where rain tapers off, trees thin-out, and the landscape quickly flattens into a vast, dry desert.

FP4 should'nt be that grainy.
Yup, I thought the same. This is FP4+.
Wonder if I'm doing something "wrong" somehow, during scanning, or can developing do this ?
I don't know what the local lab uses to develop, however I'll ask them next time I take some in.
I tried some HP5+ first and bought the FP4+ after the same amount of grain from the HP5+.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Fred

I would think the grain is from the scanning process. This may happen if you have increased the contrast too much. Try to rescan with reduced contrast settings.

Running your unsharp mask at too small a radius when scanning large black and white files will do this. You wind up enhancing the grain detail instead of image detail.

I have been photographing at this location for years, and I was tickled to see a Stephen Johnson image of what I take to be these trees on page 3 of Jim Stone's A User's Guide to the view Camera, the first book I bought about large format photography. Your image is nice, Bill - don't sell yourself short. That looks like the kind of place that a person could return to many times. My cousin lives in Pacifica, so maybe I'll try to fit that in some time that I visit.
A couple of years ago I was fortunate to be able to stop in at Johnson's gallery on the day after Thanksgiving. There was only one car in the lot (it's a big lot, because the building is an old school), which I assumed meant the place was closed. I tried the door anyway, and was greeted by a typically enthusiastic golden retreiver, then Stephen himself. He generously let my wife and I browse around for a bit, then spent 15-20 minutes answering my questions. I found him to be very warm and totally unpretentious.
I saw the image you are referring to, and it IS stunning. However, it has a funny quirk. At one edge, fairly unobtrusive, the branches of the trees are in the shapes of almost perfect sine waves! I asked him about it and he said the wind was blowing as he was capturing the image with a scanning back, causing that effect.
My favorite image of all of his was the most exquisite and delicate high-key image of the face of a sand dune at White Sands National Monument.
If you ever get the chance, go by. Although I have no interest in doing the kind of photography he is doing, I admire his passionate pursuit of what he is after.

Fascinating story about Stephen Johnson. Thanks for sharing it. Most people who go the Fitzgerald reserve go for the tide pools, which are sadly not what they once were. The upland portion with its cypress are much less visited. Hope you do get there some time.

I didn't care for the fluffy white clouds that were present so I used an ND 110 filter to smear them out with an eight minute exposure. Lately, I've really been enjoying playing around with this filter, both for the effect and for the experience of using it. There is something deeply satisfying in standing perfectly still for almost ten minutes, slowly absorbing a scene along with my camera. You can hardly imagine how many invisible birds there are in this photograph-ha!

Did you have any trouble with the wind vibrating the camera on such a long exposure? How many stops is the ND 110?

Thank you very much. The ND 110 is ten stops. There was hardly any wind down at ground level, but yes, camera movement (and subject movement!) can definitely be an issue with this filter. It's fun though. I find I'm having to visualize in a whole new way, thinking not only of how the clouds ARE, but how they WILL BE over the course of a certain stretch of time. I have to admit though, that there's still an element of surprise at this point. It all kind of reminds me of my very first efforts at photography, of studying a contact sheet (35mm negs from my K-1000) and saying; "Whoa! Look at that!" :)
Thanks again, and take care.

Some lovely images showing up here these days. Austin: love the long exposure, but despair of ever having a day still enough to do that in San Francisco
Darned if I know what this tree is called. This is another one from the Strybing Arboretum in San Francisco. I really didn't want the bright little branches in the top right, but couldn't figure out how to avoid them, and I'm not patient enough, skilled enough, or dishonest enough to clone them out in PS. Besides, I don't have CS 5. Do you suppose "content aware fill" could fix that??

Here we call those Macrocarpa trees, they make very dense hedges. Sadly the big old Macrocarpa's planted in the old days are slowly disappearing to make way for more intensive farming. Gordon Chapple had a 11x14 picture of some, possibly made at the same place as yours, which I admire and that is the reason I started learning carbon transfer printing. Sadly his website is no longer live so there is probably no way to see it again.

I scanned that print, and several others, for the article on carbon printing I published in View Camera. The prints on Melinex were hard to scan, not sure exactly why as this was my only experience with this type of scanning.
I shipped the prints back to Gordon in September 2008 but he and his wife lost their life in a slot canyon in Utah shortly thereafter, probably while the prints were still in transit back to his residence. Gordon was supposed to proof the article for me, but sadly that never happened.
Gordon was a good friend, a wonderful person, and a passionate photographer. I sure miss him.

Stefan; I like these, first and third the most. As you've shown, movements are quite useful for woods photos and narrow depth of field getting what you want out of focus or in focus. A bit more challenging than "turn it down to f64" since the softness would be gone to get the focus right.
I'm interested in what else you have for forest SF photos; don't be afraid of vertical and closer distances too.

I guess that environment is quite similar. Finland is a bit more north but gets plenty of warm from Gulf stream (without it, here would be Siberian climate).
I have found that many places that belongs Taiga or boreal forest area shares much of similarities. Including even Hokkaido at Japan.
They all have also plenty of mosquitos...

I was biking with my wife 2 years ago on a early fall and i came across this fallen tree in a river near my home .I was biking on a mountain bike ,so there was no room for large format .All we had with us was a nikon coolpix 7900 pocket camera .The water was calm,no wind, the sun was low in the sky if i remember right and yellow and red leafs on the trees around caught my eyes .I asked her for her camera ,composed the picture the best i could and took the shot .There was no time to go back home and get the real stuff ,it was getting dark .When igot home and looked the picture in the computer i almost killed myself for not having the right equipment at that time .I love the felling and tonal range of the picture along with the reflection in the water .I went to the same place many times after that but the water is never like that ,neither the colors and even the trees around are getting bigger .I'm sad because it is not an 8x10 Tmax sheet of film shot through my Cooke XV ,but at the same time ,i'm happy to have taken the shot.At least i can make some 4x6 post card with it .4x6 ??? What is that ???????????

Here are a few from this past fall and winter. The first is a bristlecone at Cedar Breaks National Monument taken this winter with a 4x5. The wind was howling but somehow I managed to get an image without any moving branches. The second is from Zion in October taken with an 8x10 on a rain drenching day, and the third is with the 8x10 also just outside of Silverton,CO at the end of September. Jim

You have missed the point of what I'm saying. This has nothing to do with analog/chemical/digital prints. Before posting the images to the LF forum, they look great on my monitor, after posting they become dull and lifeless on the LF board when I view them from the post on my monitor. Jim

Jim, Some sort of compression occurs when you upload an image to this forum. If you notice the file size prior to and after posting are markedly different. I don't know that this is the cause of what you mentioned but it might be. I suspect that if you posted a link to an image as different from uploading an image it might solve this discrepancy.

Jim, I concur with Donald - I've found that I simply can't use the forum's image hosting features, since the images somehow end up being resampled and/or compressed. Both color and sharpness suffer. Linking the images through a image hosting site (I use photobucket, for example) solved the problem for me. Beautiful photographs by the way!

Beautiful work Jim! I was just visiting that area over the long weekend (stayed at the Mill Creek campground just up the road from this trail) for the first time - stunning, but I didn't have any idea how to photograph it. Yet looking at your photograph captures it so well. It's a fantastic example of 'seeing' the scene well and knowing how to capture a piece of it.
Eric - fantastic Sentinel Rock photograph as well. I have never really photographed Sentinel Rock, and this is a great perspective - I recognized it immediately without ever having seen a shot like this.
Great work!

Thanks Tyler and Jim. Sorry, I hadn't seen your post until now Jim. The photo was taken from the bridge that crosses the steam that emanates from Lower Yosemite Falls. It's just a fifteen minute flat walk from the bus stop, maybe twenty with your rig : )

I certainly know that bridge well, but I think my attention has always been focused 180° degrees the other way. It's true when they say the best thing to do at an iconic spot is turn around and look the other way. :)

Heroique--Thank you for continuing the story.
Bradley--Because Astia is less contrasty, I find it scans better than many other positive films. Mid-tone contrast is a little more subdued in the print on cotton rag paper and the green a little less vivid. I switched to color negative film last year and am still learning.
