I like this one too. The details between yellow and green in the left tree and in the grass struck me and you somehow see that you developed it yourself/at home and that’s a positive thing, it conveys something artisan. If this this is your first attempt, don’t change anything :)

One from the Carpathians... It was a love at first sight, had to take a picture despite the oncoming storm (and thus the obvious gusts of wind)...

Looking through this camera is like transporting back to the 1930's. It's very relaxing and contemplative to photograph with it. Plaubel used to say "World's Smallest Large Format Camera". Which makes it great for hand holding. Getting it to function properly as designed is worth all the -struggles-.

I have two boxes of that film which I am about to embark on, and was wondering if you mind sharing how you rate it and what dilution/time/temp you use?

Best,
Niels

Thanks, Niels! I rated Fomapan 200 at 100. My HC110 formula is 1:100Dil 70F 60min. It's the same for any emulsions, Fomapan 200/400, Plus-X, TMAX 100, TXP 320, HP5, FP4, all used the same formula. :)
Thanks newtorf - much appreciated!

Really nice work, Patrick--I especially like the out-of-focus areas in both corners; it might be worth exploring toning options to exploit both the foreground and background.

Yes it is the Ips typographus beetle. Here in eastern France Ips bettle can also be a big issue, especially in spruce plantations of the Jura massif, although at low density it only invades weak or dead trees.

Thanks Martin! For this one, and the one in the landscape thread, I did not use a filter. However, I do sometimes use a yellow or red filter when shooting with lots of blue sky, or a polarizer to cut reflections from tree leaves if the light is very reflective. I just didn't need that here.

Not a particularly beautiful tree by any mean, but hey, the title did say "post *your* trees", and this one is ours! It's a ~70 years old silver maple from our backyard and it unfortunately has to be cut down in the coming weeks so I wanted to immortalize it on large format before it happened!

Gah... good call I hadn't even noticed it. To my defense, this is only my 3rd exposure with a large format camera (total that is! I just bought my first ever LF camera :) ) and there's so many things to think about before making a shot hahah! Thanks for the comment, appreciated!

"Shattered Stump"
Phone scan of 8x10 negative. Shot with Seneca Improved View and Dallmeyer Rapid Rectilinear. Homemade Waterhouse stop with diamond-shaped aperture (check those out-of-focus highlights). 9 seconds exposure on Catlabs X-Film 80. Developed in Legacypro L110. Hey, finally a shot on the X-Film that doesn't have serious emulsion flaws! Think I'll stick with the L110 with this film, the two seem to play well together. Developed in the Stearman Press SP-8x10+ daylight tray (diggin' it).
Looking forward to printing this one.

Not a particularly beautiful tree by any mean, but hey, the title did say "post *your* trees", and this one is ours! It's a ~70 years old silver maple from our backyard and it unfortunately has to be cut down in the coming weeks so I wanted to immortalize it on large format before it happened!

Taken with my Omega View 45F, Wollensack raptar 135mm lens, on FPP Frankenstein iso 200 (i.e. Foma 200?) developed in HC-110 dilution B for ~4.5 minutes.

https://i.imgur.com/u3QoxCA.jpg

Another great way to immortalize a tree is to use the wood to make a keepsake item like furniture, woodturned bowls, carved pieces of artwork. Maybe even have a frame made from it for the picture.

Very nice--a lovely color of bark, a bit different than our Platanus occidentalis here in the States. (Of course sifting all of the cultivars--and even the London plane tree, which is supposed to be a cross between an American sycamore and the European varietal--is probably best left to professionals:)

At any rate, sycamores--along with tulip trees, hemlocks, and the sadly extirpated American chestnut--are/were the real giants of the Eastern Woodlands...one is still able to find trees with trunks two meters diameter breast height.

Thanks ! I think I'll do a simple print on Foma 132 with a preflashing.

Don't throw stones at me but I'm not a very big fan of alternative processes. I think alt techniques tends to overtake the picture itself at the expense of the image interest.

Hmm, I was going to go with "dryad with daddy issues," but perhaps that's something for me and my therapist to hash out.;)

At any rate, I'll throw in my lot for the out-of-focus areas in the background--the toning really adds to what otherwise would be merely negative space. Hope it prints--it seems a candidate for the Cone inkset/piezography approach if that's an option for you in Old Blighty.

Thanks. Piezography is something I've never really looked into, although now I'm curious. Looks like there is only one service in the UK which does it (https://www.imageprintcentre.co.uk/piezography-printing-services).

Re: the background, it's actually mostly in pretty good focus apart from the lowest part (due to the necessary tilt). See the full size upload at https://www.flickr.com/photos/atomstitcher/52268214558/sizes/o/. But yes, I did do some subtle luminosity masked burning in those areas to help bring out a bit more saturation and contrast. Some of the brightest areas of foliage were on Zone IX, but the compensation from pyro semi-stand helped with that somewhat.

Otherwise, a "proof of concept" all around: 1.) I'm really digging the 540/11 Ektanon, which is about as big/long a lens as I can manage with my Sinar Norma 8x10 out in the field. I'd never used a barrel lens before, but they seem to fit my personality.:) 2.) I'm starting to become enamored of 6x10 crops, at least in portrait orientation--hoping to try some POP prints from these negatives, which were developed in 2:2:100 Pyrocat HD and which seem to be burly enough to support a VDB.

Thank you. Yes I try to play with the deep of field but I was not sure of the result. I think I could have used even a closer aperture to have a little bit more deep of field. I like the effect of the out of focus and I would give the idea of the many other three behind the one that were the subject.

Here's what was a tree, a whitebark pine. As you can see, it had accumulated a lot of burls over its years. The bottom of the tree is actually the far end - the size of the near end is exaggerated a bit, due to using substantial rear tilt when making the photograph. But the trunk at the base was not particularly large. The tree likely died standing, and was eventually toppled by the weight of all the burls.

FWIW, this is one of the first three photographs that I took at f/64, the other two being variations of the same subject. I tilted to get focus roughly along the top of the log, then used the small aperture to get the ground in focus as well. I've always worried about diffraction distortion, but, at least for this image, that doesn't seem to be an issue at the modest size I print. Lens was the smaller Fuji 125, whatever lettering it has, and I used an orange filter.

This is my first image with FPP's Mummy 400. I figured it was similar to Foma 400 so I rated it at 200. I was hesitant to take this image because it wasn't great conditions at all. It was windy and I was shooting into the sun, but not only did the lens not flare, it created a nice sunburst. I was pleasantly surprised with the result. Toyo 45AII, Fujinon 90mm, 1/8s at f32. The foreground tree here is the same one as in my post on the previous page of this thread. After living with these images for a bit, I'm finding them interesting, but not particularly compelling. One thing that occurs to me, that I didn't want to color the previous post by bringing up, is that the trees remind me very much of bloated dead livestock or game animals laying by the side of the road!

I too find this photo quite appealing - well done! If it were mine, I'd consider cropping a little off the left side, top and bottom. Left side to change the balance a little, top and/or bottom to retain approximately the aspect ration you have now.

Very nice. It’s good as it is, cropping would diminish the feeling of space. Reminds me of the corn field in the movie Interstellar. The strong point of this image is the detail in the building below Zone V.

Great compositional subject. My $0.02. Get up in the face of this subject matter much closer with a very tight frame. I inherently am drawn to the gorgeous details of the crumbling building and the adjacent tree in more intimate detail. You may need an elevated position for lens coverage (ladder and rising center column).

I can't decide if this is / was one large tree, or a group. The Victorians (in the UK) often planted saplings in a tight group, but this is in rural farmland and I think it is unlikely. There are parts of a larger bole that has rotted, maybe the smaller trees seeded from something larger.

I'm kicking myself for not giving it some space to the right (although roadside constraints and complications applied). I'll have to take it again sometime.

Thank you for the advice. I initially wanted to shoot up closer with 105/150mm lens. However, I was stopped by the "no trespass" sign at the roadside. Thus, I decided to shoot from side of the road using 210mm lens instead. Now to think of it, perhaps the sign was only used to prevent people from entering the building since it could collapse at any time. I don't think walking 20 meters closer to the building would matter in this case. I'll try again next time!

Thanks John. You're right - no pastoral scene is truly complete without sheep! :)

There were some, but down in the bottom of the field - away from me! Luckily this scene isn't far from where we live so when conditions are right (no wind or rain, and a good sky) I'll try again.

First instincts are usually spot on. Couple of options. One is to see if you can ascertain who the property owner is by popping into the court house where property records are kept. Making the effort ahead of time and and asking for permission by identifying yourself and your objective to simply photograph there I have found is quite easy. Only had one entity say no and that was because the property was held by a management trust and they could care less. The other workable option is go early in the morning when you will have the place to yourself and you can get your shot. The light might be better as well. The other suggestion I would offer up is to try to get your camera to the highest vertical shooting position you can. I have a tripod that has a center column that rises quite high (and a step stool to get me there as well) and I have a 10 ft lightweight aluminum ladder that I clamped a piece of wood on top that I have a tripod head screw on top. It is amazing what even a modest increase in shooting position can do for a photograph.
