Lovely, that's a very impressive environment that you're exploring.:) A question: with the vertical tree trunks in the background, can I assume that you didn't use much if any front tilt? (FWIW, my first wide angle lens just arrived in the mail today, so I'm interested in finding out just how DOF I can get just from using a small aperture.)

Thanks,
If I remember rightly I used a small amount of back tilt to get the plane going from the beginning of the root to somewhere about half way up the trees or a bit higher. Those top branches overhangs quite a lot so there is no need for much tilt.
Can't be sure but aperture is probably f22 or higher.I rather take some diffraction to gain depth of field.

I wouldn't bite at the current ebay prices either. It does a nicer job than a Verito but not P&S price better.

Sorry, the dev time was 7 minutes. The exposure time was 2 minutes (due to being at f22, iso 50, 2-stop CF, and a 1.5 stop polariser).

So where are we talking about exactly?

I think you have mostly heath balds there in Virginia, which in my experience are mostly good for thrashing around in laurel and irritating sunning timber rattlers.:) The true "grassy" balds start a little further west on the AT, with the three balds on Roan Mountain probably being the most accessible to you. For my purposes here in the GSMNP, Russell Field--which is an un-managed bald slowly going back to forest--and Spence Field are wonderful, airy places to explore, with pretty much the same assemblage of vegetation there in your picture from Ambergate. (I.e. birches and serviceberry, with hawthorn being dominate still further west on Gregory Bald.)

(FWIW, if you're playing tour guide in Gatlinburg, Andrews Bald is quite accessible when Clingman's Dome Road is open, usually the first week of April...it's a favorite picnic spot for my wife and me, with great views into the Alarkas to the south and usually a family group of kestrels hawking grasshoppers in the skies above.)

I'm not sure, maybe some other more experienced members could confirm that... I have only used XTOL at 1+1 personally, and only a few times so far, but I may make it my normal go to now. I typically use good old D76 (and sometimes TMAX RS developer).

judging by your posted example, I may want to try stock XTOL sometime to see what it does.

The imperfect repetition and crafted tones of negative space are sort of Degas ballet painting inspired, though I don't think of such exact comparisons when out the woods shooting. It's just a way of organizing shapes in ways that work according to art history.

The imperfect repetition and crafted tones of negative space are sort of Degas ballet painting inspired, though I don't think of such exact comparisons when out the woods shooting. It's just a way of organizing shapes in ways that work according to art history.

Angel Oak - Johns Island, SC
Mercury 4x5 3D-printed camera, Schneider 47mm XL, T-Max 100 dev'd in Pyrocat 1:1:120 EMA

http://www.esearing.com/Bryan/AV/photosharing/DSC_5027ss.jpg

Some backstory - everyone at art festivals from South Carolina always asks if I'm been to the Angel Oak. It's by far the most famous live oak tree out here. I've been meaning to go for years and had a spontaneous opportunity to make a drive out to the SC coastal area so off I went this past Sunday, and discovered the Angel Oak Park was only open 1 to 5. I got there about 12:45 and was stunned to see a line of people waiting to get in to this park - probably about 50 folks. There's nothing there but the tree and a gift shop. I grabbed my bag and the gates opened promptly at 1pm.

While I was walking in I was called out to by the attendant who strictly told me no tripods unless I was "behind the picnic area," about 100 feet from the tree. I think the issue is simply they don't want to deal with people complaining about photographers and tripods in the way of their selfies - because the whole area was crawling with families. Kids everywhere, with the attendant yelling to not climb the tree. There was no way I was getting a good distant shot anyway, but luckily I had packed my Mercury 4x5 and 47mm XL, and quickly fired off 5 shots handheld while walking around the tree and we left. This was one of them.

To be honest, the tree wasn't that impressive to me. The Friendship Oak down in Mississippi is a much more sprawling and interesting tree, and I've personally found or know of live oaks as big if not bigger out in other places, including GA. But, I think I bagged at least this and one other interesting shot, so I can have "my" Angel Oak pic at the festivals. On the bright-side, almost every Angel Oak photo I've seen is pretty much identical. The shape of the tree is distinctive in those shots of the whole tree back some ways away. My close and up shot is a bit different than the norm, if not as distinctly the "Angel Oak."

PS:
Here's Clyde Butcher's take on Angel Oak:

High praise Scott - thanks!

From his story, I think Clyde also felt pressure to get that "iconic" shot of Angel Oak! I saw a very large print of that photograph at one of his galleries - it's one of his modern shots on digital and inkjet printed. Doesn't have anywhere near the presence of his larger film/silver work IMO...

I really like the range of tones in the pine needles; some of them look almost luminous.

Red and Green, Snake Plantation, in the Peak District, UK. A damp and dreary January morning. I just loved the reds and greens and how tree's so close could look so different.

Chamonix 045N-2, Nikon 300m f9@f22, 1s, Kodak Portra 400@iso 400, no filters. Epson V700 scan, colorperfect and lightroom processing.

This is lovely, Meekyman. A bit surreal.

They definitely create an interesting texture and repeating pattern. I think the shadows from the other trees help accentuate that texture. What about the scene changed, since you had scouted it?

Wow, what a thread. Love trees, though I most often have contact with the urban kind. I have recently made an 8x10 pinhole camera specifically for the purpose of taking pictures of the trees in my neighborhood:

I actually saw it from the other direction. I got there at the same time of day but it just didn't look the same. I don't know if it was because it had rained the night before and the day I saw it it was dry.

What a wonderful scene...:) That might be one you have to see 20"x20" to appreciate all the moving parts, though I could also see a 5x7 crop across the bottom (or even a 1:2.5 with a bit of the left side excised) as being strong in a graphic sense.

Still working the kinks out of my Norma 5x7 system--a bit of persistent light leak, though I'm cautiously chalking that up to a sticky dark slide that doesn't like to be reinserted. Otherwise, I'm digging the 360/9 Apo-Artar, Copal 3 and all.:)

As for development, I'm encouraged with working with a 1.5:1:200 Pyrocat HD solution EMA in a Paterson Orbital. Since I was using two 5x7 negatives in this run, I did take Eric Searing's advice, however, and replenished the developer midway.

Wow, what a thread. Love trees, though I most often have contact with the urban kind. I have recently made an 8x10 pinhole camera specifically for the purpose of taking pictures of the trees in my neighborhood:

Here's one example of what I'm doing (you can see the rest on my IG - address in my signature):

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49860739147_286f17c722_o.jpg

These are shot on my sizeable stock of outdated Kodak Polycontrast RC paper, processed in HC-110, scanned and reversed in computer.

Nice project thanks for sharing

Now that you mention it, I'm not sure who the second one is supposed to be: next time I suppose I could drop in a couple of ecdysistic coeds and call it Never Mind the Bullocks.:)

At any rate, it's another fine mess you've gotten us into: have a second Paterson Orbital on its way across the Pond with the thoughts of doing some contact prints. I might be couch-surfing up the Valley, so I'd appreciate you monitoring these comms.:)

I'm sureNever Mind the Bullocks would sell like hot cakes and be inversely proportional to the number of items of clothing they are wearing.

Uh oh, I think you are in trouble. Have you planned your take over of the sewing room? I hear some of the big box stores deliver.

Nice images and I didn't get the textual reference until I googled it. I like this phrase and need to apply it more: Kenosis – Bloom defines this as a "breaking device similar to the defence mechanisms our psyches employ against repetition compulsions", in other words "a movement toward discontinuity with the precursor". -- wikipedia

Thanks very much, Eric and Ben.:)

At any rate, I always thought that Harold "Hands" Bloom (if you pardon a bit of inside baseball) was one of the few critics that can usefully inform an artist--I'm mostly familiar with his exploration of Gnosticism in American culture/literature, but he's almost always interesting, even when deeply, tragically wrong. (BTW, Eric, I've been rolling with your replenished Pyrocat idea...works a treat, I think.:))

At any rate, speaking of coeds, no fewer than three accosted me at separate times in my local "urban wilderness" yesterday, wanting to know what I was videoing with my Sinar Norma. Hey 19, that's Aretha Franklin... :)

The morbidity and mortality conference over on Flickr was very helpful running down why the last is a bit soft (probably focusing error and an overzealous choice in aperture) but in my own defense, given the humidity and early morning light, I could have used one of Vaughn's plasmats-as-big-as-your-head and a sqeegeeman for the ground glass.:)

controlling contrast.

Well, I'm afraid I cheat and get up early in the morning--by 7:30 I'd be at my wit's end. :) I am having to adjust to the tonality of green leaves, though...much lighter than what I'd originally envisioned.

Love these images. If you are getting too much contrast with the replenished Pyrocat, make the second pass a bit more dilute. If doing EMA dilutions adjust your time downward a minute or two. I'm switching back and forth between normal and EMA and I can't decide which I like better. Most of my scenes are busy like your woodland shots so the edge details make some things pop where there is local high contrast. I also found a bleach/second pass develop routine seems to make the whole print appear sharper and warmer.

Thanks! I've not yet begun to print, so I'm viewing all this as remedial LF Summer School (learning to use the camera, etc) but hopefully I can start to dial-in over the next few months as I cross a more of those "operator errors" off the list. Right now, the plan is to contact print 5x7 negs on Ilford MC, but I'm already fairly sure the path leads through some sort of sepia/selenium regime. (BTW, diluting the second Pyro bath more makes a lot of sense, especially since I've been quite surprised at how high the SBR's have been, even on a cloudy day.)

Thanks very much, Yuriy--I definitely appreciate your work as well.:) While I'm here, another from the past week--taken while an older gent on a mountain bike chewed my ear off (as we say in the American South) as I was under the darkcloth. Turned out he had helped build the trail (gravel lane, really) we were on a couple of decades back, when the this little patch of land was the site of a notorious Knox County chop shop--he had tales of finding a 1971 Mustang stripped to the frame, and an entire Ford Escort left upside down in the ravine I happened to be shooting:

Swampy lake in Louisiana my brother took me to. Heat was hard to handle and I kept making mistakes with the film. 4x5 infrared film r72 filter, scanned and converted to a digital negative and made into a van dyke print

Is that down around Venice, LA? The location looks familiar.

That is nice. I like the strong mid-tones.
