Bryan - nice. Hard to say, they are both nice shots. I Agree about the OOF characteristics on this lens. It can be useful with certain subjects. I will try to mount mine someday soon.

Thanks. Now for something different. I wanted to try shooting up into my favorite tree in the backyard at night (again). I made this image with a 47mm XL a few weeks ago, but thought the Aero Ektar might be an interesting experiment.

The exposure was 4 hours, on T-Max 100 semi-stand developed in Pyrocat:

http://www.garrisaudiovisual.com/photosharing/startrails-2951ss.jpg

Funny story - I grabbed the camera after this exposure and went to climb back up the hill (we have a very steep backyard) and the camera somehow fell off the tripod. I put the camera on it in the dark and I think I had the hexagonal plate slightly cockeyed. The camera starts bouncing down the hill and I was sure it was going to go all the way down and splash into the creek that runs through the bottom of the ravine. But luckily it slammed into that tree in the photograph and stopped. A close call! Not a hint of damage and the lens, which is just glued onto the lensboard, stayed put, so I guess that was a good test of the glue strength...

I’ve had cameras fall off with those hex plates and seen other photographers have the same problem - a couple with serious camera damage. I’ve gone back to the simple tripod screw for 8x10 and Really Right Stuff mounts for smaller cameras.

Corran
30-Mar-2019, 10:11
Yep I've done it before, actually with one of my old 8x10 cameras onto my kitchen floor. I think the hex plates are easy to jam into the head and it seems correct but will pop out with some jostling. I usually double-check but it was pitch-black and I checked by feel - my mistake, basically. Live and learn! I only use my bigger tripod/head with larger/heavier cameras - I prefer my tiny Manfrotto quick release on a 3030 head.

At least it didn't fall out while making the exposure, only for me to come out hours later with a missing camera .

Took a hike with my 11x14 last Sunday -- not too far, but I also wanted to test out a new pack and check it out in use before modifying its interior.

Developed a couple of the negatives last night -- the image is of Ward Creek Trail in Hayward, CA...mostly Umbellularia californica...Pepperwoods...also known as California Bay (Laural), Oregon Myrtle, and so on.

f64 for 30 seconds, Fuji W 360/8.3, Ilford FP4+ at 100ASA, Pyrocat HD 35:70:1750 at 72F for 10 minutes, open tray constant aggitation. Most likely a future platinum/palladium print...depending on how the horizontal of this scene turns out!

Negative in a sleeve and on a light table, photographed with a digital camera, inverted in photoshop for your viewing pleasure.

Thanks, Brian - it was a beautiful morning. In the full-res version, there's a shrimp boat on the horizon that I placed just below the branch that's nearly touching the water on the left. We were there just after Christmas - a solemn time, as we had a memorial service for the little boy we didn't get to meet. It was nice to see a new day start, that's for sure.

Bryan, you're absolutely correct. I knew the beach was special that morning and am glad the transparency came out the way it did. The personal meaning has only become clear some months later, but it adds to my own experience with the image, and maybe, might with others. Or, at least a decent picture of that damn tree. :). On Sunday I went to Lula Lake Falls for the second time. The sun was nicely illuminating this seen, and I decided to make another image with roughly the same composition as when I went the first time in February 2018. Here are the two images side-by-side. The first is from last winter, earlier in the morning and developed N+1, taken with my Chamonix 45n1 and 150mm APO Symmar, the second from Sunday June 2nd 2019, taken with my Linhof Master Technika and same 150mm APO Symmar but with the sun illuminating the tree and new leaves:

Ah, definitely digging the "Spring" version on the right...you seem to be getting some great dark tones these days. (FWIW, the mountain laurel should be in bloom up high--really neat to see, especially backlit.)

A question: am I right that this image didn't take any tilt on your part? If not, what's your approach to scenes that lack a clear focal plane--focus a third in and ratchet down the aperture? (Hyperfauxcal?:))

Corran
4-Jun-2019, 11:00
Yeah no tilt, not a whole lot of depth of focus needed here. I'm definitely not afraid to use f/32 or even f/45 though if need be. This was f/32.

4x5 speed graphic / Aero Ektar at Bemis Brook Trail, Crawford Notch state park, New Hampshire. FP4+ in pyrocat hdc. June 1 2019.

A month earlier I became acquainted with a bunch of nice people at Steve Sherman's PAX event in CT and following up from that, Daniel Lin and Peter Bosco and I went shooting in Crawford Notch state park for the day. Bemis Brook has some nice small waterfalls, lots of cool geology and woods, and is an easy walk but far enough into the woods that you can get mentally immersed and get your blood flowing enough to improve your mental state in photography, especially going back and forth to the vehicle multiple times. The Bemis brook is named for Samuel_Bemis (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Bemis) who was perhaps the first camera buyer and one of the first landscape photographers in the US. Obscure local history. I shot 12 sheets of 4x5 (still have to develop a few), 3 rolls of 120, and several color dslr photos an afternoon. Meanwhile wife and daughter spent my money at the outlet store destination of North Conway 30 minutes south.

Something perhaps a little different from me on this one: an image from a new project I'm developing, photographing trees with a particular poetic aesthetic in mind (ancient pastoral, including writing on trees).

Thoroughly enjoying the 8x10 experience, and have finished off my first box of FP4+ in three months. Also enjoying the striving to achieve perfect negatives that eventually I will try alternative process printing with.

A few notes on this project, which I added to a post on Instagram recently for an interested viewer:
Memory, writing, photography, landscape, pastoral. There's a classical tradition in pastoral and elegiac poetry in which writing on trees features prominently, going back through Virgil's Eclogues at least as far as the story of Acontius and Cydippe in Callimachus' Aetia. (Callimachus is the most famous Hellenistic poet - 4-3C BC - but little known outside Classics, my profession...). For me, the photographic element allows a focus on the replication of the gesture of script as memory with the writing of light on film.

Ha, I'd almost forgotten Gallus and Lycoris--Virgil would support a number of "tree" projects...the Georgics of course, would keep you busy, but the cypresses in the Aeneid are terribly evocative as well.:) (FWIW, you might be interested in the Iroquois "False Face" societies, whose masks were carved into living trees before being hewn off, and thus considered remaining in the category of "living things" whilst being worn.:))

Thanks very much! Only sad thing about the day was that while these images were being made my car was being broken into and my Mamiya RZ was stolen from the boot. These images are some compensation to me.

A thing to mention about the toning: I think the first was toned with a Platinum gradient map in photoshop then with an orange fill layer overlay at very low opacity, to add a bit of warmth. The second had a gold gradient map applied; I feel that 8x10 scans of nature and landscape, when converted to RGB, tend to look rather too blue so need warming up a bit.

Excellent, I was meaning to ask you about your toning workflow (have you moved to a flatbed scanner, or were these done with your DSLR system?) At any rate, that's rather harsh news regarding your Mamiya--hopefully there's still hope you'll be reunited!:)

Thanks: very unlikely sadly (just another UK crime statistic). They also stole my raincoat and the 8x10 film holder I'd left in the car! Good look to them with the latter.

Re. scanning, yes Epson V850 with diy scanning mount (the usual silicon rubber, about 1.5mm thick, with film taped to edges). I still have the DSLR but for 8x10 scanning with the Epson is so much more user-friendly for me.

Found this in my scanned archives.

Taken in Washtenaw County Michigan, around fall 1994. I used a Super Speed Graphic and a Commercial Ektar 8.5". Exposure details are lost to history. Image was scanned in using an Epson V850, then edited in Affinity for cropping. Saved as a JPEG.

CreationBear,

Regarding the American chestnut, you might do an internet search on The American Chestnut Foundation which has been working for about 30 years to restore the tree. Their work involves both cross-breeding and genetic modification. There are state chapters and research centers in the chestnuts original range.

That's very kind. If I recall correctly, I deliberately metered the main trunk as a midtone for the high key effect. I didn't use any filters, no, but have worked on the image in photoshop with split toning to enhance the feel. The whites and high grey tones are not white, but are yellow and orange - I have a tendency if I don't edit black and whites like this to end up with far too cool a look, which is not what I need for this series at all. I used luminosity-masked colour overlays to do this, after a platinum gradient mask I think. Essentially I'm slowly on the road to Alt-Pro: I now have all the gear and chemistry I need, including a beautiful Lotus printing frame; I just need the courage (and time) to start!

DaveF

For toning, this one with the same photoshop toning process as the Sweet Chestnut image. Regarding finding these images, I went to a local woodland with the precise aim of looking at the summer tree canopy closely, in particular looking for Hazel, Sweet Chestnut, Oak, and Ash. This is one of my first large format images and my first image post to the forum. Despite finding the move from 35mm and medium format challenging, I've totally embraced large format. Thanks! You're kind of in the right area to know about space ship shapes in LF photos.

Sometimes I like the unusual highlights or swirl, but sometimes it's nice without. It's the only sharp lens I'm carrying around these days with my 4x5 so it's getting some practice.

Yeah some white would have been nice. I wish I would have tried another variation of the scene. But I was saving the few sheets I had remaining for the top of the pass seen between those drunk trees. And, as it turns out, in the hot afternoon there really wasn't much good up there. Once up the pass you can go even higher up to another peak that has great views. I didn't go there this trip though. I'd need to get in better shape. I haven't done much hiking this year. And summer looks to be over already in just one weekend, wtf.

Those broad leaf plants and uniform carpet of deciduous trees gives me the feeling of a tropical location.
For my likes, Fall has been terrible here this year. It has been raining since the start of Sept and generally colder than I can recall. That makes for ugly fall colors here on the west side of the cascades. The leaves turn muddy brown quickly in general for a lot of trees.

It feels pretty tropical in the summer, especially of late. We've had almost no rain though - I don't know how that'll affect the fall colors. We usually have color change ramp up late in October here. In the last two years, the leaves have changed beautifully in one weekend, and then a big rainstorm hit hard the following week and they were all gone. I'm always hoping for a bit more time.

Thanks. Not the easiest of lenses to work with. But there is very little distortion so it's possible to find angles that at least looks sort of normal.

Yes, the deeper you get in the South the thicker the Kudzu. In the winter when it is dormant you can see the trees that lies beneath. In the summer when kudzu is at it's height it will cover everything.

Intriguing subject, well composed.

Thank you Jim! This was a lake in Louisiana that had been drained for repair work on a bridge. The water level was probably down a few feet and so most of the foreground was usually underwater.

2 days ago, I found an 8x10 film holder with 2 unprocessed sheets of HP5 in it from August 5th, so I ran them last night. No exposure data recorded, but I am pretty sure I shot this with my 12" convertible Turner-Reich lens.

An experiment with Arista Ortho Litho 3.0. Didn't quite come out as expected, over developed the film a bit. Regardless, I think it's an interesting image.

Developed the film by inspection. I think I can do better with this print, split printing it. I might give that a shot, I think there's more detail to be had with it.

I guess what I’m asking is did you use regular lith developer and dilution for this, or something else?

I used eco pro film developer, 1+4. Would dilute more in the future, but my main problem is I left it in a wee bit too long.

Beautiful. Infrared was on my list and didn't get done, at least not in LF. Some nice 35mm with the Nikon ages ago. By this time I'm sure the film must be quite dead? An older Nikon digital SLR converted to infrared is probably the way to go now. Just a dedicated camera for that purpose.

Thanks Jim. I only ever bought one box as it was expensive in the UK even in the 90's. It was easy to ruin a sheet with a fingerprint, fun to use though.

I was out filming another video today and ran across this scene. I think I had an uneven development problem with this image. I fixed it the best I could. Development was 1+119 at 18 minutes, (Taco method). I'll post the other two images next week when the video gets uploaded. This was scanned on a V600 then stitched together.
