I have a fascination with trees, and that's taken up the bulk of my shooting lately. I don't see any threads devoted to tree photographs, so maybe this one will catch on :)
Here's some few from the past few weekends:

This is a shot I've been meaning to do for a while. These two trees are massive Live Oaks situated in a large field all by themselves several miles out in a Wildlife Management Area that I hike at often. Since it's far out it's often a gamble whether the light will be any good and oftentimes rain will wash out the trails making it difficult to go. Anyway, a few months ago I went into the mass of tree and found it quite engaging. I knew a super wide-angle would be perfect for such a photo. It was a cloudy day but right when I got here the sun came out for about 30 minutes, so I got lucky.
It was really hard to shoot because it was so contrasty with the extreme backlighting. I might print this in the darkroom.

Thanks guys! Regarding a contact print, perhaps returning with a larger camera may be in order... :)
Wow Bryan! That is a spectacular image that indeed deserves to be printed in the darkroom.

4x5 contacts have a special feel to them; they're no substitute for a large print, but entirely worthy of existence on their own accord!

Thanks to you both! I see that now, though I didn't think of it myself (of course, having been there!).
Interestingly, I scanned a "duplicate" image last night, but a fellow paddler had just passed. This disruption of the water flow makes the entire lower half of the image a blurry mess instead of the glass-like reflection. I'm glad I shot both, I much prefer the reflection present in the one I posted. Another negative on the "need to print this in the darkroom" pile...
Another negative on the "need to print this in the darkroom" pile...
Would love to see how your print comes out. I am new to printing and just getting comfortable with split grade printing which I think will work really nice for this image. I suggest that you sort it with "need to print this BIG in the darkroom" pile.
Pali
I've got a few more sheets of 20x24...perhaps just enough to get a good print. I'll use split filtering for burning the highlights probably. :)

I agree not a good image, but a perfect exposure, excellent in fact for this film, to get such low contrast and good shadow detail isn't always easy with this film.
It's a nice frame and positioned well
Keep it up!

David, you seem to also like going back to photograph subjects repeatedly... Isn't it the same tree as in one of your previous posts? This one is more dynamic, "stronger". Very good.
Yes I go back to that tree often. But it's not a Picture of a tree, it's like a dream that crops up frequently. The symbolism is important. Or maybe it is a picture of a tree, maybe that is how the tree actually is, or maybe thats how it conspires to appear. Maybe the image of the tree if a function of the seeers perception. Is there a seeer and who is the seeer? What is the subject, what the object? What does the tree and the image know about subjects and objects. Who cares anyway, the truth is I can see the light on the tree changing from my house about 2 km away, and the decision for me boils down to do I feel like making another exposure. Believe me, there are many, many that I have not shown. So many that I probably have quite a few gems unexamined in sleeves and a zip lock bag.

Not as happy with this as I could be, but at least my exposure came out ok, lol.

I made a YouTube video about my adventure.
https://youtu.be/C35EQeAZnGA
I went scouting in the searing heat a couple of weeks ago and stopped by this very small cemetery which has only these two big weeping purple beeches overshadowing the center portion as points of interest. Although you could hardly be in the sun, under the trees it was nice and cool and although I had planned to return in the evening I ended up exposing a few sheets then and there because I was convinced I wouldn't melt under the dark cloth. Shooting up is always more tiring and not something I like doing when it is 3pm on a hot day. But I found out that the middle of the day is probably the best place to shoot there. This was about the only spot I could find a composition from and after 3 the light disappeared from the cross and later it would set right in front of the camera, as if there wasn't enough trouble exposing film under a dark purple tree in the middle of a sunny day. The result isn't quite as luminous as I had hoped but not as bad as I had feared either.
The trees are probably from around 1850, that is what it says on the monument right in between the trees.

This is a nice photograph, but with all due respect, it could be a lot nicer.
First, its a little soft on the bottom. some better use of tilt could fix that.
Second, its very flat. Perhaps wait and see how the sun moves over the scene and try to pick a time when its not so flat.

Thank you Kevin, it was just straight from scanner, I did a contact print on fomalux SP111, it's a lot better! even if doesn't add sharpness where it was soft :)
thanks for your comment
Edit: I just scanned the contact print, I adjusted it to look like the print

Sometimes I reckon it's ok to let a photograph go the way it wants to go. This photograph has deep shadows and gleaming white wood in brilliant sunshine. I could have metered the whites and the shadows and controlled the zones by giving N-2 development but the result might be mild rather than wild. The top highlights are nearly paper base white but the photograph is small and these areas seem to read right.

I'm surprised at f/22 you got this heavy a streak in the stars, night needs about f/8 at 400 ASA for a decent density I've found for my work at least, but nice job.

Thank you Bryan. I find that Velvia 50 does a really good job keeping the detail in the shadows so I often underexpose it by half stop to be on the safe side. Here is another from the same trip and same setup only difference was that the trees were under a shade from a cloud.

Pali I'll have to say with the exception of the lovely cobalt blue on the slide film, there is just so much more detail in the shadows to work with on ektar. A little bump in saturation on a scan and it would be tough to tell. Gotta love that film. Btw is there wet print technique for bumping up saturation(add more filtration equally?)

Deval, I completely agree with you. I would say that you can make Ektar look like Velvia but never get the detail of Ektar from Velvia which opens up way more options with Ektar. What I love about Velvia is that looking at the image on a lightbox is an awesome experience and the contrast does work really well for some scenes.
About your note on scanning, this is a dry mount scan on a drum scanner with minimal post-processing. I'll check my PSD file again to confirm but I think the workflow was simply colorperfect with ektar default settings -> Levels adjustment to set black and white points manually for each Red,Green,&Blue channels and minor color balance (+ yellow) in shadows.
That is amazing!
I would like to add, BOOM, great shot.
Thanks

This is nice!
Sorry, I know it's big, but it needs to be big. I made a smaller version and all the sense of space and depth goes completely away. Plus, you can't really see the tonality of the trees very well, which was the most striking to me when I walked into the forest. The Beeches looked almost like wet sea lions. With this image I think the bigger, the better. LF images need a bit of real estate.
I tried to edit in a little contrast, but this look, almost as it came out of the scanner, looks the best to me. The low contrast definetely looks more realistic and invites more to look into the depth and discover trees in the distance. It's easy to be too harsh in editing images shot in hazy/foggy conditions. Sometimes there just hardly are any highlights.

On first glance it looks like an old mans nose, then it assumes a phallic shape. Then I question myself. Nice pic.

I like that one a lot, gogo120. Wonderful light and tonality management...
Thank you to all who commented on my image on the last page. Sorry I didn't respond sooner, things have been very busy here with shooting and developing as the leaves are falling fast.
The weather has been great the last week, exactly what I hoped for, with a few days of fog and a few days of bright sunshine. Unfortunately things haven't been so good on the photography side of things, somehow nothing I tried worked. A bit frustrating to enjoy the circumstances and feeling like you can't make the most of it. That elusive foggy fall shot will have to wait another year.
Even though I didn't find anything that moves my photography forward I did shoot some film to try and get in the mood. Here is one that I think is decent if unoriginal. I tried to get a good shot of the two trees to the right of the central tree that were in the light combined with the grouping on the right. This was the best I could come up with.

Jim: Many of your carbon transfers appear very dark on my screen. Is this a problem with my calibration, or are you printing dark on purpose? (There is a similarly dark carbon transfer you posted in the portraits thread.) Are carbon transfers capable of the same range of zones as film? Pardon my ignorance, I enjoy your work, so I'm trying to gain a better understanding.
Good point, Peter. Jim, do you save these jpegs in a different color space than srgb by any chance? If I save mine as adobe rgb, they tend to display quite dark in a non-color managed browser as well. And perhaps your screen at home is quite light or in a very dark room?
Jim Fitzgerald
12-Nov-2015, 13:03
Yes, the images seem to come up darker than the actual print. The prints that I have posted recently have been soft focus in nature and I find that in the somewhat subdued light the contrast is softer than normal. I personally don't mind the darker images but they do not show very well here. When viewed in good light they look very nice. I'm sure that everyone can say that about their work.
Now the mood that I was going for with these images was darker than my normal style. Hope this helps explain.
