nah, was trying to peel it but it wasn't ready (pulled up, emulsion still sticky so put it back hence overlap). Looks like emulsion lift artifacts (which I have yet to try and at $20 per shot, kind of hesitant).

It's easy, try it with some FP100C first, simple, 74-78 degrees about a 1 minute soak and it comes right off.

Crossed wires. I was peeling the positive (looks like b/w transparency) from the negative, I wasn't lifting emulsion from a print. Some leave it on, I like to peel so I can either reverse it or do something else. Peeling IP 8x10 is just a matter of waiting a certain time then pulling. This was peeled too soon. But wait too long and it's another kind of bad.

...this is one of the few fog shots I've taken I could live with. :)

The fog is exposed and "placed" nicely, but I think the "blowing" shape of the tree, and undulating hillocks, are what make the shot so fun to look at. I bet the image would also "work" with a clear view of the landscape behind it, in lieu of fog. (I'd even be tempted to return and take a similar shot on a sunny/cloudy day in good light.) I bet your tripod placement was key in capturing the tree's dynamic shape – as people in the field know, just a few feet can make a world of difference. Great shot!

Pulled out Pentax meter and it was dead! (bought in 1977, serial # 78878.) SWAG on exposure. Close...on the thin side.

I looked at this with polarizer but decided no filter. Heavy overcast. I expect I will soft-pencil-on-negative a little strength into the highlight on the road at the far end to make it shine and then print carefully. Can't go too deep on this one.

Every shining white dot is going to get spotted out to calm the image down.

This is an iphone file of the proof on glass over fixer tray. Looks like it may need a touch of burning on the top 1/3 and bottom 1/3.

128987 Road in Red River County near Boxelder, Texas.

I don't know if it looks very high but I am on my 4-Runner. Camera at least 10 feet up to open up the shape of the road.

Alessandro: Very nice, I'm used to seeing your photographs of people, it is fun to see what you do with other subjects. (Of course, if you could do a tree with a surfboard, that would bring everything back together ;)). My usual curiosity: the proportions of the color picture of you photographing the tree still look like 4x5 - is that a coincidence, or did someone with a view camera take a picture of you with a view camera?

Let celebrate the repair of the forum by posting some images we've been sitting on!

I went out for a walk Friday and nearly froze my hands off even though I was wearing gloves and fully dressed for winter except for not having skipants, which would have been useful that day. It was about 5f and a strong wind. I should have shoveled for a while first to get my blood pumping good. It was the sort of day your eyeballs water from the cold and sun and wind. As usual I took my Rolleiflex, but also brought along the 4x5 speed graphic and 7.25" verito and 2 film holders of fp4+. I worked handheld as setting up a tripod was too slow and I wanted to keep moving. Not many sunny days this time of year, so I was glad to see some shapes cast upon the snow.

That's how these particular trees seem to grow! There's a bunch of them on the beach that get submerged like that and there's fresh ones growing next to them, obviously completely submerged at this point of the day. It's bizarre. And that was quite a sizeable tree - a good 10-15 foot high.

Wow that's really cool! This is Australia right? So it doesn't surprise me, they have some pretty amazing wildlife and pretty amazing plant life. So it's one of those trees they can handle salt water? Cool.

Agreed. I love the lines in the second one. The way the eye snakes the road, the power lines, and the ditch are great. Plus full view of the tree. Regardless, both beautiful photos.

Thanks Stone,

Lens was a 75mm grandagon on 4x5. Can't remember which one, but it barely covers 4x5 with no real room for movements.

Been using Silver Eagle as I work out the kinks of going to larger sizes... I like the paper, only issue I've had with it was with selective bleaching, but I'm pretty sure that was my mistake in procedure. Going to try 20x24 next and then I will move up to the Mural sizes of either Ilford or Foma.

I'm liking it, but not thrilled with it. Maybe I should go back and shoot it with 8x10 instead of 4x5 to smooth out the background a little better. Maybe bring out the AE for it in 4x5.

I'm not sure who really makes it... but I've had good success with it. It responds as expected with Ilford MG filters. It seems to tone well, even though I just tone enough to get rich blacks and never enough to push the shadows into purple as others like to do.

I had a disaster with it when I was doing selective bleaching with Potassium Ferricyanide, but I'm pretty sure I screwed that up the process. I need to go back to my notes from my workshop with Per Volquartz and try it again.

It's definitely worth playing with if you are on a budget. (I AM!!!)

I haven't found any paper defects... it handles my subject material nicely. I don't have much to compare it to since I am just coming back to the Darkroom after mainly using a hybrid workflow for the past decade. I've been using some expired Ilford. I can't see any major differences, other than it's thicker and nicer to handle than some of the old Ilford FB I have laying around. I've even sold a handful of 16x20 prints on it this year!

I'm not the most scientific person on this forum as regards to testing papers... but I like it.

Last Autumn.

I think I've taken more LF shots of Beech Trees than any other tree, mainly for the way they splay their toes and the beautifully wrinkled-furrowed bark. The smoother bark (higher up) adds a nice contrast, and it's no wonder these smoother regions attract young lovers with pen knives to carve hearts and initials...

But I especially like the red-leaves-against-green-trunk of this shot! ;^)

I'd be tempted to return to this very tripod position for a study through the seasons. For example, one carpeted in light snow (color or b/w), another in dappled summer sun, etc.

Still working in the woods behind my house. Still plenty of snow. 4x5 fp4+, preanniversary speed, 7.25" verito. made yesterday. It would have been a good day to wear a go-pro as someone has suggested others could enjoy it more vicariously. It was cold and windy (below zero f windchill) and the trees were creaking and groaning from the cold wind, and the wind was making noises of it's own.

Stand of Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum) in Durham County NC. This is somewhat outside its natural range but the trees, initially planted by the Duke University forestry school 80 or so years ago, are obviously doing well, and the grove is spreading downstream. I've been spending a lot of time in and around these stands in the past months, as it is close to my house and I am fascinated by the trees. I'm going to buy some waders; there are lots of places I can't get to with knee-high muck boots and stay dry.

Thank you. I agree the tonal scale isn't "right". The main problem is that I overdeveloped the negative. I then tried stretching it out in scanning and post-processing. But it still looks too compressed on the high end and I agree that makes it resemble bad tonemapping/HDR, which is certainly not the effect I want. I'll be re-shooting this one.

h2oman, the merit for the soft light rendering is also for the high dilution grade of the developer, IMO,

Just for informational purposes, the dilution of 2:2:100 is actually more concentrated than normal for Tanol, which is recommended to be used at 1:1:100, like most pyro developers. I did this to give me a bit more working strength to develop to a higher global contrast for alternative processes and not have 20+ minute development times.

The light was hazy and overcast at the end of the day and the sun was just slightly covered by the clouds. I developed this sheet a little shorter than some of the others that day as I was experimenting with times to give me a proper density range for Van Dyke Browns.

Here's the sheet uncropped, if interested:

Hi Pali,

I think its a nice image. When I first saw it,I started thinking, I wonder what this would look like in black and white...mainly because of the strong compositional elements and the high contrast. Color doesn't define the scene IMO. I think the "thing" that may seem off is the midground if we were to call this a landscape. The wall of trees seems obstructive to the background which includes a bench and a hill line. Actually if the wall of trees were eliminated, I think this would make a nice iconic image following a rule of thirds. The foreground elements are strong and well placed. The front row of benches is in focus(I assume with a swing). The treeline and bench in the midleft are OOF which is neither a strength or a weakness, but it makes the viewer ask why the choice was made.

Pali, I have no intention in coming off as over-critical, so I hope you don't take it that way. Thanks for keeping your photo open to discussion, I would hope to see more.

I like that softer one. Makes some simpler sense/presentation of the complexity of the light and woods. That's a skill the old pictorialists like Day / Clarence H White were very good at, but it sort of got lost for a while.

Jp, thanks. I used the same lens as I recall. The wonderful Kodak 305 Portrait lens. Soft one around F-6 and the sharp one at F-45.I am partial to the soft one as well. There is a certain drawing effect with this image and it almost looks to me like it is a miniature. Both Carbon prints are quite nice and work well especially with the soft focus images. More to come.

Thank you Deval. This is exactly the feedback I was hoping to get. This image looks great at full responsibility in pieces because of the amazing resolution in the young leaf buds and such but as a whole, loses its impact even for me. Sandy, the Black Oaks that I've shot for years in Yosemite Valley turn a beautiful golden color in the fall and shed their leaves. They look great in the winter covered in snow and in the spring the new green growth is something to see. I would love to see the oaks in South Carolina, photograph them, pay you a visit and talk carbon transfer. Hopefully I can do that at some time during my retirement. So much to see and do.

I like that one a lot, welly, nicely done!

Here's a yew tree on the other side of the planet. Still testing that blue-sensitive x-ray film; I'm starting to get the hang of it. Exposed liberally at ISO 50; it could have done with even a little more, but I find it hard to judge the contrast in the blue channel using just my eyes.

This was on 4x5 Velvia - the transparency was scanned at high res by Peak Imaging in Sheffield UK and subsequently used to make Fujiflex prints. I am really impressed by the quality of this print medium even at large image sizes. Has anybody else had images made this way? I used to make Ilfochrome prints in my home darkroom but now all darkroom work is B/W. The quality of Fujiflex made me think twice.

In a "less prolific era of photography" it would be hanging in a fine art gallery or in someone's collection imho. It's a very pleasing image that holds my attention. Not many do that anymore. Come to think of it... most of the images that do are made with film :) I think I have a bias :D I can live with that.

This was shot on Kodak E100VS. I really love this film. Shame it isn't made anymore.
I used a warm up polariser to maximise colours. Little was done post scanning, aprt from usual clean up i.e. dust spots etc.
I had one printed on cibachrome (when it was still available), and simply stunning. After all this years on the wall, the print is just like when it was first printed. Almost 10 years ago.

You could certainly see the quality of a drum scan (esp detail in shadow).

Ektar in my experience has been very saturated and I didn't add any saturation to this scan. Actually, the scan went through minimal adjustments but I did adjust the levels for the blue channel to reduce cast I was getting in the shadows. Here are the two steps I took for raw conversion before applying selective curves for the ground.

ColorPerfect RAW Scan conversion:

http://www.netsoft2k.com/Docs/Media/Pictures/Scans/SM1100/Black%20Hill%20Trees%20Kodak%20Ektar%20100%204x5%20-%20Dryscan%20ColorPerfect.jpg

Blue levels adjustment to remove blue cast in shadows:

Hope this helps.

Same for me; the green appears extremely saturated on my monitor.

JeRuFo
1-Jun-2015, 12:41
That has to do with the colorspace of the jpg, not the scan itself. It looks overly saturated because you view it on a monitor with a wide color gamut in a browser that tries to apply it's own (wrong) color profile. Copy it to PS and it will look normal again.

Beautiful composition (again!). The placement of tree on the foreground right is classic and very pleasing to the eye.

Amazing forest shot Daniel. The contrast in there must be deadly and you have everything from luminous shadows to gentle highlights. Really captured the feel. Nice!
