Joe,

That is a nice image. You did well with the challenging complexity of woodands - nice use of the various diagonal elements.

I found this tree along the Stura di Demonte river in Italy near my house.
I was impressed to see the tenacity to withstand on the river's edge: its roots are the expression of this force. Now after several floods those roots allow him to still there and enjoying the sunset in a new hot summer.

Thanks Joe and Sam. It would be a heck of a bonfire - those logs are along the shore of a reservoir that began as a lake. When dammed, the trees that were submerged died and floated to the shore. There is a pile that is probably 1/2 mile long, 100 feet wide and 2-4 feet deep!

Unfortunatley, after getting that image my tipod fell over with one leg lodged between two logs. I broke the lower section of one leg and the base of the front standard of my camera. :( Fortunately it happened during a lens change, so no lenses were lost.

Shot at the Metropolitan Park in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. It was a weird park, big thing for a city, built on what used to be a landfill. It had started to grow up a bit, but still felt oddly new, so there was just a weird vibe for the whole place that I should have explored more before I left. I will be out the next week, stalking the wild Redwood in its native habitat. They may have a few (okay, maybe 10 to 15) centuries' experience on me, but I have the technology -- a Gowland PocketView 4x5, a Caltar IIN 150mm and holders loaded up with some of Kodak's finest -- Tech Pan! I'll hike in a few miles, set up a base camp and live off the land for a few days -- as well as off the organic instant soups, pita bread, cheese and other fine goodies I will just happen to have along. Oh, and tea bags.

Wish me luck! But if the Reds get the best of me, don't bother looking for me...just keep posting your best trees, and raise a scotch to my memory...

Great composition on this one. I really like the spot of light on the grass at the base of the tree.

As far as that Ken Lee Tonality Badge goes, I think you would have to bring that dark spot at the base of the tree up a zone or so....;)

(For the record, I don't think anything I've ever shot qualifies for that badge.)

You're probably right! Though this is another example of the withering southern sun. The difference between the tree base and the fluffy clouds was like 15 stops. Adding a red 25A filter and an N-2 development resulted in this, even with my shadows metered at Z4. I'm still trying to come to grips with TMX's N- response.

That's the power of contracted development: the scene looks gentle and soft, not like a harshly lit summer day. Maybe you should get the Zone System badge for extreme contrast taming.

Personally I've had good luck with expansion lately, but my N minus development is not yet as precise as I want it to be.

I have returned!

Took about 20 images during the five days in the redwoods. I'll get to the developing this week -- perhaps even tonight!

Alas, no Aetemis...but still a good thing I do not keep hunting dogs!

Only exposed one sheet of film during my second backpack trip -- the one I took right after I got out of the redwoods. This second trip was a week-end trip up into the local mountains as a chaperone for the high school backpacking club. Definitely a different type of trip than being alone for 5 days! But it was fun letting the students see a 4x5 camera in use!

Places where I have made a photo have a special appeal to me. I like to return to them again and again... the more the better photo I already captured there (or the more I like it)... I'm trying subtle variations, to hopefully create a better image. Or at least a different but as good one...

I love the way some of you "chop" trees in your compositions. I always tend to include the whole tree in the frame not knowing how to just frame the trunk. I think it is a brave approach.

Unfortunately this is, for me, more an exercise in learning how to scan the negative and use Photoshop Elements 11, rather than about the quality of the darkroom-prepared print. So of course I'm interested in any comments regarding my digital processing (currently restricted to pretty much a little contrast control, some dust spotting, and resizing) at least as much as any critique of the image.

Hi Peter,
Regarding your image post, the enlarged image of the thumbnail doesn't look as sharp as it should. Perhaps the resolution of your posted image is too low.

Regarding your question about embedding a full size image within the body of your post, refer to posts 2711 & 2712, dated August 6. You will find them on page 272 of this "post your trees" thread.

MMElvis was kind enough to provide assistance and a detailed description to me on the same question you asked. In my case, I was hosting the photo on a separate server and providing a link to the URL for my image.

Hope that helps.

I'd like to see that much larger. On a monitor and in that small size, it has a very crispy, massively oversharpened look to me.

As for the "over-sharpened" look it does look over-sharpened on my work monitor (cheap Dell) but on my 27 inch iMac at home, my iPhone 4S with retina screen and my iPad 3 it looks perfect.

I think the majority of that impression get is due to the small size. There's so many small, quite high contrast details that in the small size it almost looks like a pointillist drawing.

I'll take your word on that -- on two different size macs, it has the same feel as over-sharpened, over-saturated color prints. But it could just be my aging eyes, as nothing in nature looks quite that sharp or that kind of tonality to my eyes. And there are no rules saying an image can not be sharper than the reality we see.

But the image is very well seen.

I have been shooting the panoramic camera for about 6 months now and it has been by far the most challenging medium I have ever worked with but it has been pushing me hard as a photographer and forces me to think, plan, and execute in a whole new way with a refreshingly new perspective. It's even helped me to look at shooting other mediums differently.

Fun shot – shape & color. And a tree to hang your hat on!

But it’s the kind of tree that thrives on hardship – then defies it, even after the end.

Thank you!
Yes there are a couple stars in the frame as this was captured at dawn about 15 minutes before the actual sun came up which is directly behind the tree.

You should give the panoramic format a try.. It's extremly fun to experiment with but sometimes it can get frustrating as today I was photographing with the 6x17 and I had a beautiful dramatic sky but I could not fit it all in the narrow frame! It drove me nuts! lol

Thanks, Rich. Subjects like that are one of many areas where LF really shines. It looks flat but there's small amounts of both tilt and swing to get thing focused up. I also used a bit of rise to fine tune the composition since I was already up on a ladder. In small sizes it would look almost without composition but larger, you see the particularly diagonal leaf on the right and the dark hole in the center that help organize the space.

Thanks a lot, aruns.

----------------------------

In the following picture I wanted to capture the perceived heat of the Sun in the glowing autumn leaves... Therefore I shot straight into the Sun, including it in the upper left part of the frame. But it did not work at all. At the suggestion of a friend, I cropped the image to this square format, and it was "oh, yes, that's it" to both of us... Maybe it will work for the viewers here, too... ;)

Just got myself a Horseman 612 back. Shot of roll of my dwindling supply of Agfapan 25 (yes, Agfapan, not APX) the other day.

Some areas of improvement for sure as I get used to using this back and the perspective this format gives but should be fun.

Richard, it's wonderful... but I think yours' is best viewed in full size... in print... :)

Most of our images here are only rough approximations... otherwise we would not shoot those big sheets (or so large a part of the roll as is your case... ;) ).

And Jim and Peter, you managed the backlight very well... better than me... and made really beautiful images, both of you... each one different, but wonderful in it's own way...

Peter and Jiri,

Thanks for the kind words.

Jiri, the only way I can manage backlighting well is to keep the sky and sun completely out of the picture. Otherwise, I don't think it's manageable. In the image posted, the beginnings of the tops of the trees where the sky was poking thru and the sun were just off the top of the frame. The sun was directly behind the center tree trunk as well to help with glare. I also had a shade up on top of my Ebony to keep the bright sky from hitting the lens. Throw in a little luck, and you may get a decent image. I only wish I got nearly as many winners as you.

Chamonix 5×8", Schneider Symmar 300mm, 13×18cm, Wephota NP 15, Rodinal

I tried N-2 development on this one, but am afraid the time was still too long - I have not done my share testing to arrive at the N-2, I just shot in the dark... Next time I'll try tweaking the dilution, as the time was already short enough - 5min with Rodinal 1:50. And yes, I know, stand-development would be the way to go, but I don't have a tank large enough to do stand development in. Might try it in my Jobo 2830 drum still...

Thank you Jiri. And compliments on "Threesome" as well. If your development times were too long, you certainly made up for it with the nice scan. I can't see where shorter dev. time would've given you more details or a better contrast range.

Thanks Peter... and yes, I had to play quite a lot with the scanner settings to get acceptable "digital negative" (TIFF) to start working with. But that is not the right way, I prefer when the initial (automatic) scanner settings are good enough to tweak only a bit... or not at all. I prefer when I can start with a good negative sheet by itself...

Thanks for the clarification!

I called it a “deciduous pine,” but a more accurate term would be “deciduous conifer.”

This is of deep importance to tree lovers, like the people in this thread. ;^)

I’m not sure I see what you see, but I have innocent eyes.

Anyway, two gender-based tree threads might be fun – “Male Trees” & “Female Trees.”

Of course, a third one called “Tree Porn” would get the most hits.

“Tree Nudes” would be the more artistic name.

Thanks. I punched up the contrast and saturation a bit to help, being the NC film.

I did discover a small stumbling block with my plan. The outdoor shed I'm using for a darkroom has really hard water, which I hadn't really noticed until now (it wasn't working until just recently). It looks milky...I think the mineral content is screwing with something - the rear side of the negatives I've processed also have a milky look to them. I accidentally scanned one backwards and the scan looked like a cyanotype - almost completely blue. So definitely have some things to work on, from a processing point of view. Might just try slapping a water purifier I have lying around on it.

Thanks, Jonathan, but maybe I may have misled on my 10-year statement. It's not a subject that I have constantly searched out over such a long period, but a subject that arises occasionally, and whose results never seem to satisfy. I have many reflection images that include the landscape that work fine, but it's these isolated attempts at an abstract with no reference landscape that have evaded me for so long.

Even with this one that, when it appeared, made me run back to the car for the camera, had my brain asking, "why are you wasting time and film on this again?" Never knowing how moving reflections are going to appear with time on film, I shot the first on Velvia at 4 sec and a second on E100VS at 1/2 sec as the scene was brightening (I mis-stated the time as 2 sec on my OP). The first, on Velvia, was a blurry mess. The second, shorter exposure on the speedier film finally worked.

So as kind as your words were, I think that "impressive" and "inspiring" are hardly deserved. It's mostly dumb luck and serendipity.

I had a hell of a time focusing this shot. It was dusk, darker than it looks, and I probably should have focused closer to the base of the tree. I don't have any front tilt when shooting vertically with the Speed Graphic, unfortunately. When you get used to using movements you sure notice the lack of them.

I developed this N+1, but I think it needed N+2.

Photographed this tree for about 25 years but only caught it at peak bloom with the moonrise once. Changes a lot every year. 5X7 Deardorff with 210. I like to have a celestial clock going in my landscapes- moon rising, things blooming, shadows running out. The more momentary it is the better I like it.

5X7, (and 120mm Fuji that was later torn in half by a poltergeist at Shiprock.) Platinum print. Makes a nice 20X24. I look at trees like they are individual souls.

If everything isn't going to be totally different in the next three minutes....I don't take the shot. And I like it when it's a day in the life of a tree that is special. 5X7 and 120mm Super Angulon. It doesn't look like it but I'm on top of my 4-runner. Polarizer.

83976 Young Wild Pear blooming and storm clouds, 2010

Just back from three 12 hour days in the Canyon de Chelly system. I was shooting one portfolio but really got sucked in by the trees. It's all processed and proofed but the printing is just starting. Amazing Cottonwoods.

Thanks. I live in a very nice part of the country but one that is devoid of scenery. Just trees. No great sweeping landscapes, no majestic views. (New Zealand! My God! You couldn't do better if you lived in Iceland!) Everything within arms reach. It's like photographing inside a big room: the horizon line is rarely seen and there is always something overhead. That said, the best art is made at home, and home is where the trees are, even if they are just backyard trash trees. I'm not saying I don't love it, a lot, but people don't come here to see much of anything.

Really like the composition.

Thank you, Renato. I always briefly feel under the dark cloth that I'm being heavy handed and gimicky using wide lenses but then I see the negative and I like the result. This one strikes me as quite menacing, for a tree.

Really nicely done Robert, the one with the road is my favorite, and hint of the shadows source at the top of frame in the second is perfect.
