Charlotte, NC is a beautiful city any time, but spring is special. The old cherry trees in Freedom Park are something extra. Even when not in bloom the trunks are very interesting. Both shots were made at the Main Entrance.

Camera – Kodak Full Plate (6 1/2x81/2) with an Ektar 12 inch F6.8 lens.
The first shows some of the pathways at F16. Number two I was a step or two closer and shot wide open at F16.

Ramiro,

Interesting lens comparison. I have an Aero Ektar and love it, but in this case I prefer the Petzval shot. Really sets the tree apart from the rest of the image, and the vignetting draws your attention to the center. Nice job.

Thanks Jonathan, I've see you work with the AE and really like it. I agree the Petzval version looks better. I did a few more with AE afterwards and now wish I had used the Petzval instead.
I did another comparison with the AE and a Heliar. The difference in sharpness is quite amazing (as one would expect.)

I had some shots I was experimenting with using Acufine but this one accidentally got developed with it. I used it 1:5 for 2 hours, with vigorous agitation for one minute and then 15 seconds every 30 minutes. Came out pretty well, a little overexposed. Might have to try this again. I used T-Max 100. The acuity with Acufine is ridiculous. Toned in PS. Nikkor 360mm @ f/32, 15s exposure:

Corran, that is the most mysterious image post of the day, perhaps the week.

Looks like the two forelegs of a hoofed animal – a deer? – wading in lentil soup…

The textural clarity of the bark & lichen is impressive indeed on my screen.

Thanks Heroique and Harley.

The stuff in the water is some kind of fungal growth in the tannin that is permeating the water right now. I have never seen it like it is now - it literally blankets the water as far as the eye can see in some places, probably due to the very warm weather lately and lots of rain. Though apparently it is still "flowing" as evident by the photo. I used some movements to get the plane of focus along the tree and stopped down to f/32 but I guess that had the unintended effect of really jacking around the focus. It almost has a petzval swirl now, ha! I also took a color shot of the same scene, can't wait to see that, but I'm thinking I'll print this 16x20 in my darkroom.

Re; development - I actually just filled up a BTZS tube and took it with me when I ran some errands. Kept a stopwatch in my pocket and shook it when I needed to. People looked at me funny but it worked...

Maybe they thought it was a pipe bomb... Hmm. check your watch, shake the pipe bomb. Nothing. Plot failed.

I must say that's the yummiest tones I've ever seen in tmax 100. I've avoided the film because it's always come out too "hard" no matter what I try when used outdoors compared to tmy2 or 100acros. Was that some sort of shade scene?

And another from around the same time, taken near the base of Mt. Whitney at Whitney Portal. I'm still getting the hang of sharpening my scans and I overdid it on this one, I think. This is pretty much how it looks on the light box so it's hard to not want it to be as crisp on screen, but I'll figure it out. Color balance is tricky, too.

Messing around with a Gundlach Pancratic Telephoto on the Speed Graphic. I want to try it on 8x10 one of these days--it will cover--but at that magnification the lens is so slow that I'm not sure my camera can remain vibration free for that long. We'll see, I guess.

Don't know if I've done this right or not but here is one of my first scans of a 4x5 neg (just got a V700). I have read thru a bunch of posts about how to upload images and post them but it might as well be Greek. And resizing so the image would upload was real challenge, probably screwed it all up. Maybe someone could create a tutorial for idiots err illiterates I mean. I sure would like to post some of those big images like others are doing. It is now right on the tail end of summer and there is a very nice transition of light as the angle of the sun is getting a bit lower in the sky each day. The sun is still quite "harsh" but certainly nothing like the height of summer. Thanks for your comment David.

Thanks for looking and the constructive comments. I plan to revisit both the current negative and try to better nail the enlargement with it as well as going back to the site and try to better capture it during the same light conditions. It was a late evening shot with the sun going down quickly and the tops of the aspen being lit. So there was quite a contrast in the light and dark areas of the valley. As a consequence, some portions of the negative are quite thin. I've just gotten back into the darkroom after many years away so I'm still trying to redevelop my techniques and best figure out out to optimize the negative. Maybe split grade printing?

Nope. It's somewhere in the Colorado Plateau and located inside the confines of a “Research” Area which was marked “No Trespassing.” I do think that it is a bristlecone pine but I am not sure. I photographed several, including this one, and all were within a close proximity to each other.

Ramiro, this is worth a re-shoot or some photo shop work. Just looks like some flare or light from a large image circle bouncing off the inside of the bellows, did you use a lens shade?

Ramiro Elena
15-May-2012, 06:44
You're very right. Aside from Gary's comment which is correct I also noticed that flare. That's why I mentioned it looked like shooting against the sun.
Part of the problem might reside in the fact that I had the darkslide pulled out for around a minute or two waiting for all the people, bicycles and cars to pass by. My bellows might not be all that light tight. Even the darkslide dropped down an inch and a half cropping part of the frame.

I was trying not to go back but now that you mentioned it I'll have to.

Jonathan another sleeper that keeps calling me back, very subtle image.

You're very kind, thanks. I had wanted the most in-focus leaves at the center to have more tonality, but had I increased the exposure the sky would have blown out to a distracting degree--not that it isn't already. When viewed large there IS more tonality, though. This is one of the first images I have taken in a while that would benefit from being printed BIG, I think. To prove it, here is a detail from the above scan:

http://kolstad.us/ebay/Back-Yard-Tree-DETAIL.jpg

I may have to try again. Since the tree is in the back yard I have many more chances!

Jonathan

Jonathan,
Wow would really like to see the print and I think big would be good considering the amount of detail and focus shift occurring in just this small area.
And the center definitely creates a great visual vortex.

I have noticed the few more subtle images I've tried to post on the web lose their essence and don't translate well to the electronic world.
The digital world has a lot to offer us but it comes at a cost, one of which seems to be a lack of subtle detail in a lot of different things from music to visual imagery.

Ed... I like the tone of the foliage. Did you use a deep green filter or is Adox 25 film that sensitive to green?

No filter used, I'm not sure to be honest about the green sensitivity although searching on the internet suggests that it has a lack of sensitivity to red, so that would suggest that it is more sensitive to green/blue. I was a little disappointed that the slow shutter speed has allowed a bit of wind movement of the top of the gorse bush to show when enlarged.

Taken this afternoon as a test. I had some Polaroid type 55 with dried out chemical pods and some useless type 665 pack film with supple pods, so I transplanted the 665 pods into the old type 55 sleeves. The result is below. Not bad. I wouldn't expect full reagent coverage since the 665 surface area is much smaller. Just as I clicked the shutter the sun peeked out from behind a cloud and helped boost the contrast a bit for me.

I printed this last night on Oriental glossy RC. I couldn't decide on the grade and printed it as a grade 2 and 3. After much soul searching I settled on grade 2 because the darker clouds in the background stood out more whereas on grade 3 they became more of a dark distracting band across the image. I'm thinking about reprint this on Ilford's MG art 300 paper. Anyone tried that paper yet?

Thomas, that's a nice photo, but you'll have to see for yourself what you like Art 300 for. I prefer it for less detailed subjects as it is uniquely textured. A normal doubleweight fiber based paper might show off the dark tones of the branches a little more.

I really like this image, especially because I can't tell for certain if the shadow is on the side of a building or the sidewalk. The line on the right side being perfectly vertical toys with the perspective. I can look at this photo for a long time.

Thanks H2oman, yes, I can imagine it reminds you of the Oregon Cascades too.

This lake is silent by day, noisy at night w/ animals thirsty for a sip – blacktail, marten, bobcat, cougar, bear, porcupine, etc.

I can't take all the credit, we were driving by and my wife spotted it first.
I used a little bit of swing and tilt to get it all in focus and straight as I could.

Here's my reference shot, I've started keeping a detailed log of each shot.
Which recently paid off because a couple of shots were really way over exposed.
After reading my notes, bingo! I knew where I went wrong.

My wife has pointed me toward many a photo, so I know what you mean. I hadn't thought to keep a digital record of my camera set-ups. That would save a lot of note-taking about camera, lens used, etc. Right now I have a haphazard collection of notes in a little notebook, but half the time I can't remember which shot was which when I bracket even with notes.

While I was shooting this live oak a woman in her early seventies came walking by and told me that her parents had a house in the vacant lot behind the tree across from the house seen on the right rear of the photo. The tree used to stand straight up and as children, she, her brothers & sisters had a swing on one of it's limbs. They used to climb the oak as well. The soil around the tree is very moist and the tree began to lean until it fell over and grew into the twisted trunk and mass of limbs.

What a fun shot – I love twisted & distorted trees, and they usually have tragic stories to tell, but it usually takes someone like your friend to tell us what happened. I’m glad she came out to share a few details about its life.

It reminded me of this poor Cypress hiding in the shade, who has no one to tell about its trauma; but it certainly suffered plenty growing up – split asunder, pushed aside, shoved underground. Like your Live Oak, it survived, and it thrives today, very forgiving of past transgressions.

A couple close-ups of tree parts, taken in Crater Lake Nat Park. As I was getting the second one, a couple came hiking by. The guy remarked that I had an impressive camera, and the woman proceeded to ask me the cause of the burl. When I didn't know, she told me the theory she had picked up somewhere. When researching what she told me, the best I could find id that little is really known about the cause of a burl!

The Blue Ridge Parkway is one of my most favorite places to visit and photograph. I have visit the Parkway for 70 years, remembering picnics as
a boy with my parents at Doughton Park. After several years of neglect, it is good to see some of our stimulus tax dollars making much need repairs. Quite a few workers repairing and paving, others are repairing split rail fences, overlooks, and stone retaining walls built in the 1930’s.
This dead tree is located in the picnic area at Doughton Park.

This was captured with Fuji Acros instead of T-Max and the only large difference I see between the two is the cloud highlights are much better with the T-Max capture but that may be from the stand development of the 120 T-Max film. Taken this week at Eagle Creek in Indianapolis. This tree had a huge 18-20" diameter branch torn off in a wind storm a couple of weeks ago. With the branch missing, the entire beautiful center of the tree was opened up. I used the front meniscus group of an old brass petzval providing about 265mm of focal length to make this image at f/22 on 4x5 Acros. The image has been cropped to square.

Same settings as before with addition of shift.

Used tilt instead of shift?

I prefer the tonality making the tree pop out , rather than the selective focus in this shot...JMO. And along that line, I would avoid the fall-off happening in the upper corners and reduce the filter effect by going with a yellow, or no filter at all...again just my opinion.

Vaughn, I used tilt to correct perspective. I agree with your comments. The Xenar has little room for movements hence the fall-off. Might try the yellow instead. I am waiting for some clouds to show up. Thanks!

Ramiro. Sorry, I used the wrong terminology! I meant: It looks like you used swing in the second image, not shift to throw both the left and right sides out of focus.

Shift would have just changed where the whole image falls onto the film, not throw anything out of focus.

Sorry for the confusion!

Also I have a bias to light skies, so take my filter suggestion with that in mind!

Edited to add -- roughly, 'swing' is a rotation of the lens(or film) on a vertical axis. 'Shift' is a lateral movement of the front or back standard.

Oh, you're right! I meant swing... hehe sorry.

I know exactly what you mean with skies. I was trying out my new filter purchase.

Ramiro,

I like the three dimensional effect the front swing has on the tree--but I would, wouldn't I? I shot something similar last week, but I was unhappy with how much swing I used. Unlike you I didn't shoot it both ways. I am tempted to go back and re-take the shot with no swing and see how I like it.

Do you have back swing -- less likely to have the light drop off using that.

Great image Jonathan! You are right, maybe a little too much swing but trully majestic.
I used both front and back swing. The Toyo Field doesnt allow for much movement.
