Some trees at Point Lobos this past Tuesday, the 27th:

Thanks for the compliments!

John, The trees are in the way of the forest, I can't see it either.

Alan, I am glad said that. I was going for precisely that look. I frequent the park a lot and every time I get to this spot, that's how I feel.

Dexmeister and Sanchi.....both are very nice.

I wanted to figure out a way to avoid the world of grey I seem to live in this week. Rain, cold, clouds, mist...it was not good times to be outside with the 810. I was determined to get at least one decent photo today.

I used a graflite fash gun w/slave on a tripod to provide fill for the front of the tree. I like how it came out....flashbulbs are fun and they smell good :)

Here's two photos I did the day after Christmas with two different lenses. 4x5 tmy2 in pmk, speed graphic.

The first is a trioplan 210 at 5.6-8ish. crisp separation between sharp foreground and soft background.

http://www.f64.nu/photo/tmp/lff/img473.jpg

Second is the same scene with the Reinhold wollaston meniscus 190 at f8. Cropped a little because of the shorter focal length. A yummy fuzziness and different sort of DOF.

http://www.f64.nu/photo/tmp/lff/img472.jpg

Me, no preference for either image, just kinda fun to have both.

No, guilty as charged. That is an older print. Printed on Ilford Gallerie, probably grade 3 and developed in Dektol 1:3.

I do admit it would be fun to dive back into silver gelatin printing, but little precious time for printing in carbon and in platinum as it is! I took my three 14 year old boys into the darkroom this past week and had them printing a few of my old MF negatives. Fun stuff!

I did get the 8x10 out today and I photographed some redwoods (with a few alders, maples, Douglas firs, hemlocks and assorted berries sneaking into the scene!). The last image was an hour exposure (f64, 125 ASA)...it is getting dark early! :D

Very nice! Inspiring even. For the past couple weekends, I've been walking re-walking my surroundings with my dslr and helios lens (which won't focus further than 5 feet) to see my surroundings in terms of blurry circles like you show here. Once my head figures things out I can trade for a big camera and combine blurry circles and straight woods like you have done here.

Thanks. I was surprised by this image myself, how it almost looks like a water reflection or something. Not only is there front tilt, but I was shooting down a mountainside into the trees so the effect is exaggerated.

I'm about 1.5 hours away from Waycross, where one entrance to the Okeefenokee is. However from what I understand there is more interesting scenery at the Folkston entrance. I made a thread about the Okeefenokee in the Travel subforum, but haven't gotten to go because of the wildfires that started up back then. So I'm raring to go at some point in the near future.

I like it too---this is 90xl covering the 8x10?....I know you're close, but man...the stated specs for that lens are WAY off...of course those are at f16 or something....

I"m curious--how far away can you get with the 90 on the 8x10 before you get clipping? (at the teeny apertures of course)--lookig for the "upper limit"...

My two big bucket list items are to go out west and photograph bristlecones and to go to Africa and photograph Baobob Trees.

Here is another Velvia 50. Ebony slw810, Schneider Super Angulon 90xl, f64, 1 sec.
This location is in the Ten Thousand Islands, which is part of the Everglades National Park. These little mangrove islands guard the extreme southern coastline of Florida.
The weathered old trees are one of my favorite subjects.

90xl---on 8x10? is this correct? how far away do you have to be to get 8x10 coverage--or is this a mistake and it was not the 90? or was this with a 4x5 back on an 8x10 camera?

90xl is correct. You actually need to get up close and personal to your subject because of the extreme wide angle. I know the specs don't call for this to cover 8x10 but stopped down, with no movements it just scratches the corners. I usually crop in just a smidge to remove some vignetting and color fringing on the corners. I prefer to use my Nikor 120sw and usually find it to be wide enough but once in a while you need to get really wide!

I have a couple more 90xl images, let me dig another one out and post it.

As promised here is one more with the 90xl on my Ebony slw810. I did this with a circular polarizer and Velvia 50. using the polarizer was a real bitch because it bands the sky on such a wide angle lens. I use the lee 95mm adapter which attaches to the barrel instead of threading on keeping the filter from causing additional vignetting.

wow---I've been experimenting myself of late to see which of my lenses cover larger than intended formats up close and have some "new perspectives" on things...that 90xl man...whatta lens f32 and you get all that real estate---excellent effort here--lots of people wouldn't even try it because "you're not supposed to do that".....

what's the furthest you can get? like 10' or something like that? or farther?

last month I found out my 250 fuji will do 11x14 from like 10' and closer....super wide bonus just for trying it out.

I dont think there is any limit to how far you can get from the subject but being this wide things get tin quick. I usually stop down to f32 and focus at about 10-15 ft. that gets pretty much everything in focus.

wait---do you mean to say that lens covers at INFINITY??? man are them specs WAY under rated...I gotta get me one if that's the case...that's an angle of 122 degrees!!!!!!!!! so the 115 is VERY conservative....

dude---can you verify that you can get full 810 coverage at infinity?

wiat--scratch that (edit)

just searched and found your statemetn that it covers corners at infinity stopped down....OK then that about settles it maybe get a walker titan for that thing....

do you use the center filter then?---suggested to get one with the lens?

The 90xl is a real pain in the ass to use, as I mentioned before it just scratches the corners and that's if everything is centered. Very heavy fall off if you don't use the center filter, and even then you have to crop in a little to clean things up. But, after all it's 8x10 so unless you're making contact prints and need the entire sheet no big deal.

This is the widest lens I have found for 8x10, the super symar 110 isn't supposed to cover either but a lot of people use it for 8x10. My favorite wide 810 lens is the nikor 120 sw. That's the one that lives on my camera most of the time. Much easier to use and still very wide.

I have recently gone back to shooting more 4x5 in search of the wide limits. The 47super angulon xl has 120 degree angle of view, I picked up a Cambo Wide with a 47 on it so it is essentially my super wide point and shoot.

My friend Clyde Butcher has a 38xl mounted on a home made point and shoot that has some pretty crazy results. I know the 38 isnt supposed to cover 4x5 but there you go.

One more awesome wide tool I had for a while was a chamonix 5x8 that I mounted my 72xl on. Long story but I don't have it any more.

All post some from each soon.

ahhhhh.....well...you know...I've been looking at the super symmars but they SAY they're no good up close....what I really really want is da SUPRAWIDE...for 11x14...the super symmar sez only to 1/3 life size...no good....man....for real perspecive you gotta get closer---particularly with the wides....well...looks like a WTB for me....builds me the 11x14 superwide with the super angulon......

unless theres something better...aside from hypergon that is....

WAIT...there's that 213 repromaster I have...that kind of works at infinity....up close ok..THERE YOU GO....ain't as WIDE as the 90 though...man if they made like a 150xl super angulon...THAT would be da bomb......still gotta get me that 90xl though....I think it could work very well....but the light required.....but then...38 on 4x5....nice and hand-held...almost focus free particulalry at the small aperture...

does the 38 dude use focusing or just infinity and stop the hell down?

Chris, that looks nice. Good tones, focusing choices, and pose! I'd either crop it to eliminate the shelter in the background (seems to work well as a square image!), or if you go back to the park, keep shooting more. Put the shelter behind the tree (which would keep the trail producing a line in the composition) or take a few steps to the left and pan right and have the shelter beyond the left frame.

Thanks! This was the only frame that really worked out of the 4 I took that day. It was rather windy last week so capturing the mangroves with no movement was difficult. And to top it off, when they did move it allowed the sun to creep in and overexpose the image in some areas. I'm going to return to the location tomorrow from a different route and see if I can try again.

That may be Yosemite, but I doubt if a Bristlecone Pine walked over from the Great Basin bioclime. It is, in fact, a Western (Sierra) Juniper, also relatively hardy, long–lived trees. This one indeed appears to be dead, or nearly so. The nearest bristlecones to the Sierra Nevada (Yosemite) are one range east in the easily accessible White Mountains:

Chassis, thanks for the compliment, most of the cedar trees that were in Oregon are either on a roof or as furniture somewhere! This spectacular grove is deep in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness in Idaho. There are some small protected groves along highway 12 between Missoula MT and Lewiston ID.

I still haven't figured out how to have the image appear in the post from another site. Oh, wait I finally got it!

"The living among the dead". My woods have little soil for trees to take root, so we have more fallen and dead trees than anything. It looks like the aftermath from Predator. But we also have new life in the woods. The snow yesterday and selective focus of this 1920's portrait lens show that off nicely here.

I was standing on a dirt road on a berm. I think this area floods a lot.

The film was Tri-X. Lately, I've been sending my sheet film out to Edgar Praus for developing so I'm not sure which developer it was. In any case though, it was 'normal' development. I will say that the light was very nice; this was just before the sun set behind a low hill and it was diffused a little by a thin cloud.

This is X-Ray film developed in Caffenol! I have tried all kinds of developments with X-ray film and failed. A flickr contact is using this single sided Kodak Ektascan X-Ray film and I thought I would try it based on its apparent sharpness and tonal range. Caffenol gives a smooth result unlike rodinal in this case. So a bit of experimentation until I got this. I exposed this at 25 ASA. This negative looks like real film btw, Its transparent.

To add more contrast? The lower part with the fern needs some more contrast.

This one might clinch it for me if it were longer and included more of the left side. As it stands, it doesn't feel right when the perspective dynamic of the line of trees moves in from the right but not the left. You need more of the left side pointing the eye towards the vanishing point for it to feel balanced. If that makes sense.

Thanks for the feedback John. What you said does make sense, although I do like the slightly off-kilter feeling of this one, and the way that the path becomes a sort of escape hatch.

It's funny, last night I was looking through this book on Van Gogh and came across this: http://www.pubhist.com/work/7146/vincent-van-gogh/couple-walking-between-rows-of-trees Looks vaguely familiar, doesn't it?

Just to be clear, I am NOT comparing myself to Van Gogh here :), but as I've looked at this book many times, it did make me wonder how much that picture (Vincent's) has seeped into my subconscious, so that when I came across the trees, I felt compelled to photograph them in that particular way.

Really nice Joel. I loved the way the tree with all it's roots separated well from it's background. How did you go about this image? (location/developer/processing..)

Thanks

Cazneaux Tree

Gelatin-silver photograph on Agfa Classic MCC III VC FB photographic paper, image size 24.4cm X 19.4cm, from a 4x5 Tmax 100 negative exposed in a Tachihara 45GF field view camera fitted with a Voigtlander Anastigmat Skopar 1:4.5 F = 13.5cm lens. The lens has limited coverage and the image detail at maximum rise is fading rapidly at the top.

This tree was originally photographed by Harold Cazneaux in May 1937 as the subject for his famous picture "Spirit of Endurance" which received international acclaim. My Voigtlander lens dates from 1928 but it is not nearly as old as the tree which still prospers today at Wilpena Pound, South Australia.

Thad, thanks for your kind words.

When I went to the Cazneaux Tree I carried a photocopy of Cazneaux's image folded in my pocket. I was going to find his tripod holes and use an uncoated lens from that era to, in effect, stand where he stood and see what he saw. Things didn't quite work out. Cazneaux had a sunny day, mine was cloudy. My lens should have been a 150mm instead of the 135mm. You would think that ground level itself would be geologically stable but it had changed. The tree must see hundreds of cameras and camera-telephones over the years and if it had a hand it would surely be laughing gently behind it.

That is a great picture Maris, and interesting also to read about the earlier photograph by Cazneaux. Curious, I searched for it, and while it is also very nice, to tell you the truth, I like yours better! Anyway, Here is the original for those interested:

A very interesting tree, Maris. Apparently Cazneaux printed several versions of the negative(s):

The choice of using a brown toner (Kodak Brown Toner??) is outstanding to my eye and having the mountain range trail off to the right with the dark part of the tree on its left is the better composition to my eye. Thanks for posting this.

Nice image!

Thanks Jon. And I’ll add that the Western Hemlock was invented not just for photographers, but for readers. (BTW, I’m old fashioned, so I mean books, but how many are thinking ipods and Kindles?) For the Western Hemlock’s long, horizontal limbs shed a soft, dry carpet of needles for comfortable sitting & make for a nice bit of shade above you. The Hemlock in my photo does have long, graceful, beautiful limbs, but this time, I decided to concentrate on its curvy, exposed roots. These trees – though slender – grow very, very tall, and are common here in Seattle, like Sierra Redwoods.

This tree is called "cypress."
Very strange that it grows in Russia, and it is not known from where he took up there, a lot of different stories.
