Looking at the meadow cam -- sunny and 51 F, thick snow on the meadow (no grass showing), the wind kicking up snow on the top of Half Dome -- and I want to be there!

I will be there in a month and a half (Feb 27 or 28 to March 2 or 3), but I am whinning because I want to be there now!

I was fortunate enough to get a photo accepted into the Yosemite Renaissance Competition/Show (a multi-media show) and I am going to the show's opening on Friday Feb 29th. We'll see if there is any snow (old, fresh or otherwise) there then!

Anyone else thinking of being in the Valley around then? I'll be the THO (tall hairy one) with the 8x10.

I'll be there the week before... also with 8x10.

I just returned from Badger Pass skiing with a bunch of 10 year olds. It was a brisk windy day. Best of all was looking down at all the fog in the central valley and El Portal. Come on clouds, start playing with the light. Vaughn I'm sure I'll see you at the Yosemite Renaissance. Once again I missed the dead line for submission. I'll look for your work - your a dedicated photographer to carry that 8x10 - I still think my 2x3 view camera is a monster! I appreciate your passion.

Hi, hope to see others at the reception Fri. Feb 29th from 5:30-7:30. I submitted photo. (I wasn't exactly sure what type of work they want.)

It seems to be the only exercise I get these days (and not often enough!) Actually, it is only 60 pounds of stuff...25% of my body weight. Back in the good old days, I carried 80 to 85 pounds (4x5 camera and gear/food for 11 days in the wilderness). No way can I do that now! In Yosemite I tend to spend half the time on the Valley Floor and the other half hiking up creeks and such. Hiking to the base of Ribbon Fall is a SOB with large format and the lungs of someone living on the coast!

You are the second photographer that I have heard that missed the entry date. No wonder I got a photo in -- less competition! Actually, only 8% of the entries were accepted into the show this year -- a lot of entries must have been submitted. And since it is all media (except videos and perfomance pieces), it would be a tough show to judge...and it is juried fromy projected slides and jpegs. At least the awards are judged using the real thing.

Jon -- did you get in? Those are really great images -- especially the hortizontal! It is hard to determine what gets in. Pieces are actually juried in (that is, it is a group decision), with emphisis on a personal approach to Yosemite and the Sierras (as they say in the prospectus) Just pretty pictures are not enough. I remember one photo that got an award was a still life of tofu carved in the shape of Half Dome! So ya never know!

Vaughn

PS...Hugh...I have three 10 year olds (boys) and I am coaching a basketball team of 10 year olds. I am definitely leaving all ten year olds behind on this trip!

Congrats to both of you!

And what a sweet image of the Merced, Jon. What is your contribution this year Vaughn?

I'll miss the opening again, as my visit is two weeks early. Wish I had time to hang out.

I was fortunate enough, too, Vaughn! See you guys on Feb. 29!

Also very nice Michael. If these are any indication, it looks to be a good show.

Sorry I'll miss your visit!

I tore the hosue apart looking for the CD with my entry on it -- could not find it. But here was last years piece I had in the show until I can find this years...

It is the base of Bridalveil Fall, 8x10 carbon print (single transfer carbon printing reverses the image)

That's around the time I'll be there with my mob of second grade cub scouts, fixing picnic tables and cleaning fire rings in the valley.

After I fish the last of my surviving cubs out of the Merced river at El Portal I'll dry them off and take them to the exhibit ;)

Is there an "art" belt loop in this for us? ;)

I have taken my 3 boys to the opening a couple of times to graze the food tables! One evening we took the boys for a walk into the meadows at night -- one of them jumped off a log onto what he thought was the ground -- but it was only sticks and leaves floating on the surface of the river. Being February, we took his upper clothes off and he wore my jacket for the walk back. The boys were probably 6 or 7 years old.

I found this year's entry. An 4x10 platinum/palladium print taken last February.

Thanks for sharing. These are all terrific. Michael, is that the base of Lower Yosemite?

Since we're on the low water theme, here's that image of the swimmer below Vernal taken 9/12/01.http://www.quietworks.com/FRAMES_FILES/QW_FILES/SBOV%20SCAN.jpg

Thanks Keith. I think Michael's might be the base of Bridalveil -- nice image, Michael!

Indeed, it is at the base of Bridalveil. Thanks for the nice words, guys.

I swear to you, Vaughn, I'd never seen your similar photo until now! Ah, the 'cost' of photographing an icon.....

I think it is great! Perhaps it is good that my process reverses the image! (Which is why I usualy don't make carbon prints of half Dome!) What I'd like to see is someone photograph there in the Spring! Now that would be a challenage...especially LF! One would need an underwater LF and scuba equipent (unless one could breathe concentrated mist!)

I did have the curator of the Ansel Adams gallery scratching his head due to a carbon print that had Yosemite Falls in it! That particular icon has been seen enough in photos to be noticable printed reversed!

An image I had accepted into the Renaissance show a few years back was a nice one. Then last year I was looking in John Sexton's book of tree images -- and there was the same image. (Okay, slightly different light and slightly different camera position...and of course mine was better;)) I used it to introduce myself here a year ago...

But that is all a part of the fun of photographing in Yosemite -- I have found several favorite images I have made after-the-fact in The Range of Light. But I still consider them my images.

Looking forward to seeing you!

I love what I see here. I may just try to come up on the 29th with the 8x10 and 8x20. I would love to see this fine work in person.

It looks like the valley really got hammered in the last day or so. Wish I was there! Good luck and good light to those that are.

Yeah, wish I could visit again soon. Love the photos. I feel sorry for all of the photographers who avoid Yosemite because "it has all been done." Far from it, but perhaps it is best they don't drop by. It is less crowded that way. :)

See ya at the opening!

Vaughn and everyone who is going to Yosemite for the opening on the 29th. I'll see you all there. I'm going to camp out in the valley and I'm coming up Friday morning. Can't wait to see all of this great work in person, meet everyone and spend some time at my favorite place on earth. I think you guys told me before, but where is your work going to be displayed again? Thanks,

Jim

Enjoy the waterfalls everyone, it's supposed to be great weather 36-62 deg and mostly sunny. Jim, the show is at the Yosemite Museum Gallery in Yosemite Village (near the Ansel Adams Gallery, I think).

The Yosemite Museum is on the other side of the Visitor Center from the Ansel Adams Gallery. They have an excellent Native American Museum there too, if you will still have your scouts with you.

Well, back again to the "real" world!

Yosemite was beautiful, the opening was fun, and congrats to Michael for his honorable mention and the use of his image on the program! His print was a beauty!

It was great to see him. It was also good to get a chance to photograph with Jim. After showing off some of my prints, we grabbed our 8x10's and hiked a couple miles and exposed some film.

The road on the north side of the Valley is closed (and will be for a long while -- culvert replacements) -- making some areas hard to access on that side without a lot of walking. The road on the south side of the Valley does not have a bunch of turnouts for parking. But still lots to see and photograph.

The snow was great to work with. It was warming up, so it is going fast -- but we'll see if any late storms roll through!

Hey Vaughn, thanks a lot for that! Your print was a beauty as well (Jon's, too). Heck, it was all good! I had a great time, and it was a real pleasure meeting you and Jim. You're good people!

I hope to see you guys again in the near future! Take care.

It was a real treat to get back to Yosemite. The images were fantastic and I had a great time with Vaughn and our 8x10's. Got 22 sheets to develop this weekend and some 8x20's also. Can't wait to go back.
