Exceptional cloud underlit sunset on an unnamed face of avalanche chutes and clouds above, John Muir Wilderness August 2007, 4x5 Provia 100F through my 150mm Nikor.

Like most people I too have spent a lot of time capturing images dawn/sunrise/sunset/dusk. Some with the rising/setting sun in the pic, some with light on the sky, and some with the light on the landscape as this. Today most of the material ones sees marketed publicly has been altered from reality especially with post processing tools. The bar would be really high even without manipulation. That is fine with me as long as photographers are up front and honest about what they have done. Unfortunately few are so today instead subscribing to the no comment status quo. Some obviously tend to resent the fact I'm one to bring the subject up regularly on web communities reminding them. Thus the public tends to have little trust in what they see these days with this arguably most cliche subject. Because of that I have removed warm light sky/cloud material from my site gallery simply because I'd rather show the material in person and allow people to ask me about the images one on one. ...David

Here's a couple of unusal ones:

Sunset at Land's End Beach, San Francisco 9321

and Sunset at Pirates Cove 9323

Note: Both locations are within 10 miles from each other. Except for a ND filter at exposure (a little heavy in the Pirates Cove image I'm afraid), no post exposure enhancement was used. Both are straight scans on an Epson 3200.

All the Best,

First two taken about five minutes apart just before sunrise, overlooking Big Spider Lake in Hayward, WI, a place as beautiful as it gets for us Midwestern flatlanders. Wehman 8x10, my last few sheets of Kodak E100VS (want more!!!), Fuji A 240mm. Last, gratuitous tropical sunset (even flatlanders can escape), Master Technika, Velvia 50, Fuji 600T (available for the right price if anyone might be interested).

Here's a little contribution to this thread for now... I can't get it to look right (The way I want it) from TIFF to JPG but this will do. I forget the name of this beach, it's the one directly north of Pebble Beach golf course. Image made with a Horseman Woodman 4x5, Nikkor-W 150mm f/5.6 on Fuji Velvia 100 QuickLoad. Cropped because it looked
better this way. (And I'm partial to panoramic images......)

Very nice, Thomas. There is none of the usual cliche in that sunrise, a very different take on what is more commonly mundane (at least in my eyes and hands). Lovely, evocative, and so well composed. More?

Thank you for the kind words. I wanted to get the valley floor but my closest lens is 150mm and it was just too wide for what I wanted to accomplish. That wouldn't have given Half Dome any respect, I think. That and I really liked how it made El Capitan seem so large and ominous in relation to everything else.

Thank you for the nice comment, LJS. Sometimes I have the feeling that I get the best compositions when I don't think too much about it. For this picture I did not have the time to think and to explore. I walked up to the spot, saw the sun and the ship, set up the camera and took the picture. Just one shot, the ship was moving too quick for another. Everything in just a few minutes.

Another one, sunset this time. Maybe a bit more of the usual cliche. A summer sunset in Fyn / Denmark. Wista DX with APO Ronar 150mm, TMAX 100 Readyload developed in D76 straight.

Well, that shot definitely wouldn't have happened the same way without you, that's for sure! It was a great trip. I was all over CA. Ultimately my shooting was limited as most of the time was spent with friends and family. That and they hate it when I drag my 4x5 gear along. Oh well, I am already getting print sales off of my HDR I ended up doing with my D200. Anyways, thanks Larry!

Didn't know whether to post this as a sunset or a cliche, methinks it qualifies as both though question its qualifications as an image worth posting. But what the heck, it's the current personal state of the art, as it were.

Wow there are some amazing images posted here both in b&w and color which speaks to the talent that resides at this website. I have attached two of mine with a narrative of the latter image that I include with all my photographs. It reads as follows:

This photograph was taken in celebration of the elegance and simplicity of nature. Too often we take for granted the simple things of the natural world and are dismissive of their singular beauty.

I, on the other hand, realize that the sun's twilight is an integral part of nature's heartbeat. It offers a place marker for many biological systems, including ourselves, as a time to rest and a time to awake. Some are nocturnal while others are not. As the sun passes over the horizon, it triggers different vital functions in all living things. I have found that when I am out in the backcountry sleeping under the stars, my biorhythm becomes closely linked to the cycle of the sun. I sleep better, work harder, eat better, and feel better. When I return to the urban landscape and artificial light governs my day, I can grow weary and tired.

When our sun is at rest on the horizon drenched in bold red light, it can offer a greeting to a new day, or it can signal to us it is a time for restful peace. It is a time that lies between day and night and tells us that the heartbeat of the land is strong and enduring. It offers us comfort to know that all is well.

Compositionally, the photograph is simple in design and contains the four essential ingredients of our planet. It offers a little land for us to stand on, it provides us with a little air to breathe, it quenches our thirst with a little water to drink, and of course, it anoints us with the sun's eternal energy. I submit to you, what could be more worthy, elegant, and simple than a photograph of our precious star at rest on earth's horizon.

I guess it's time for some more hackneyed sunrise shots. I'm missing the event as it is now occurring after I get to work in the morning, and as absence makes the heart grow fonder, I guess it also makes the brain more like mush. Anyway, two shots in quick succession from the shore of Lake Michigan, one autumn morning (non-call weekend, obviously), Canham 8x10, Astia 100F, 150mm SSXL with center filter and varying degrees of malexposure (my preferred shooting technique, it seems). Sometimes being near a major industrial center like Chicago is an advantage, the particulates in the air (i.e. smog, being more like it) can make for some remarkable colors as the light is refracted and reflected so unnaturally.

I'd like to know why the horizon is so far off?
Is it just exaggerated because of the width of the composition?

ljsegil
23-Nov-2009, 19:16
Robert, just order it in 5x7 from Badger. Doesn't matter what format you shoot, does it? Vinny, I may not be understanding your remark about the horizon being far off, but Lake Michigan is over 60 miles wide in the direction the camera is pointing, and the horizon is at the limit that one would see on any "flat" surface without anything obstructing the view.

J Ney, I dig that image. Lots of cool symmetry with just a bit of asymmetry thrown in to keep it interesting (the background trees left and right).

Here's one from the Lower Klamath Wildlife Refuge. It's perhaps a subliminal homage to two of my favorite photographers, Brian Kossoff and Colin Graham. I wasn't thinking about them when I created the image, but their influence became apparent as I cropped and processed it. Maybe they won't appreciate me attaching their names to this shot, but I'll take my chances!:D

h2oman,
beautiful image. I don't think anyone would be ashamed to be associated with it; wish I might someday be worthy of such an association.
Jney, orange may not be enough if Dick Cheney still stalks the woods (albeit usually of a confined and stocked game preserve, no real wild and wooly beasts for a man of his character and bravery while firing).

I meant it not being level.
I think I'm just basically tilted. Actually, the light was changing rapidly and I didn't pay adequate attention to maintain a level horizon. Maybe someday I'll get it all right, but for now I am happy to have the image, skewed as it may be, rather than having misssed the moment.
Thanks for your comments, next time perhaps I'll get it better.
