View Full Version : 2007 Print Exchange Call For Entries
How this works: For example a small exchange with 10 participants would contain two groups of 5 photographers each.
Group #1
Joe
Jim
Judy
Jeff
Justin
Group #2
Bob
Bill
Brenda
Ben
Beau
--
Joe, Jim, Judy, Jeff and Justin mail 4 prints according to the specs posted to the exchange facilitator (me). I then sort out these prints so they each group member receives one print from each member of their group. Bob, Bill, Brenda, Ben and Beau mail me 4 prints each according to the specs posted. I sort these prints out so they too receive one print from each member of their group. Everyone receives four prints, one print from each of their group members.
The groups may actually be in the neighborhood of 12-15 participants, but not too large so as not to burden us all financially.
Groups are chosen at random and the method will be done by simply writing each name on a small piece of paper and then put in a paper bag and drawn.
--
There is monetary cost involved. You will need to print the amount of prints necessary for your group, ship these prints to me, and then include a fee (PayPal or check) for the mailers and postage to the recipients. Fee will be determined after the lists have been completed. I am administrating this for free. :)
--
There will be US, Canadian, European, etc. mailings. Please note that I will not have an exact idea on shipping costs to the recipients until I have the list of addresses. This all takes a bit of time and the cooperation of participants to respond when asked to.
--
Print Specs
Created on a large format camera (2x3, 4x5, 5x7, 8x10", etc. film format)
Wet darkroom or digital prints
NO larger than 11x14" paper
NO smaller than 8x10" paper
Image area can be any size as long as it is on paper from 8x10" to 11x14"
NO Mats due to added shipping weight
Black & White or Color
Filters/Digital Manipulation OK
2007 creation date desired, but not necessary
--
These instructions will get refined as time moves on.
If you are going to participate, post your name here and then PM me for confirmation. As soon as the list(s) are completed, I will publish them along with shipping info and fees. I, like most of you, work for a living. I will respond at least twice during the day looking for messages. I am opened to suggestions, but I think we can get this going if you are serious. You will need to get going with your image selection, printing and mailing of prints. Don't be one of the ones that missed out last time because you procrastinated!! :(
I absolutely love my prints I have received in past exchanges. I am doing this for this reason alone ... I love collecting FINE PHOTOGRAPHY !
Get moving people ...

It would be nice to allow smaller formats too. I use 4x5 and 5x7 and only contact print. Here I am excluded. I agree that 4x5s may be too small for many of us but why do not we allow 5x7?

Opps - I did not read carefully. I understand that I can print 5x7 negative as long as it is printed on 8x10 paper - right? If so - I am in. Would the smaller print matted on 8x10 or 11x14 count ?:)

A book is not a print...a litho page is not a print. It may be an image, but it's not a print.
As long as I am making one print, why not make a second that could be collected and scanned by someone on the forum.
Thanks for clarifying what a print is.

I mentioned earlier that I'd like to participate. But I have a question. In an earlier thread, someone mentioned being in groups with silver prints and groups with inkjet prints. Is there a reason for that? Is that what we're doing? I do silver myself, but I certainly wouldn't mind seeing quality inkjet work as well.

The print specs are as posted in the first post -- wet or digital. It is nice to get both if you have never seen either. :) The cut-off date for signing-up is Monday, January 21, 2008. I will post the final participant list on Tuesday, January 22.
What would be a reasonable amount of time for printing? Please post your feedback so we can come to an average amount of time that most participants would need. I think 2-3 weeks from the final list posting would be fair, but please let us know.

I am experiencing network problems and hopefully it will be cleared up within 48 hours, so please bear with me. I can receive e-mail but cannot always get on the web. If you need to contact me and my PM stuff is not being picked-up, go through my web site and send a message. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I would suggest a little longer time allowance for printing. More three-four then two-three weeks. For instance, I can only print on weekends and it might be hard for me get everything done in two weekends.
Also, it might be nice if we attach some notes to the images. Technical info or where/when the image was made. I am not sure but it seems to me a nice idea - what do you think?
regards,
Jan
I think the deadline should be March 1st.

Since I tend to have to go away for anything up to three weeks at very short notice, I hope for more than four weeks to print. That woul at least give me a chance to make wet prints, otherwise it will have to be inkjets.
Hi Darr
Please put my name on the list, I also would like to participate in this exchange.
In the previous exchanges we had short description notes included with the photographs. I believe March 1st or 10th will give everyone plenty of time to get prints ready and mailed to you.

i too would request 5-6 weeks of working time for printing. also, the last print exchange i was in we mailed our prints to out group members ourselves. this may save some time for the OP.

Will we be broken down into groups or do we need to make 25 to 30 prints. I'll need about four weeks if it is the latter, as I too can only print on weekends. My washer only holds 6 prints at a time, and I want these to get the full treatment.
Are we sending unmounted prints?
We will be broken down into smaller groups
Prints are NOT to be mounted
Enclosing an info sheet about the print would be nice, but not a requirement
Last day to sign-on as a participant is Monday, January 21, 2008
Would March 1st be a good date to have your prints ready to ship to Florida, USA?

I will know how many in each group by Tuesday, 1/22 which will tell us all how many prints to make. I think the largest should be no more than 12. What are your thoughts on this?
Jan_6568

The last exchange I was in (last autumn) from APUG I was in a group of four and got no prints. No one but me from my group sent out a print. I think that the groups should be larger than four, just so I have a better shot at getting something. :)

I'm here, thanks! Past exchanges were fun but I'm glad Darr is taking it on this year.
Grade 12 photography, eh? Our photography program here is very popular but since our provincial government and that old fart in Victoria decided that it was unconstitutional to charge kids course fees, we've been having a very hard time finding the money to pay for supplies...but we're managing. It's even more difficult funding digital photography (more expensive than traditional!) that I teach in my graphic design class. What a time we are living in. I trust it's better where you are?

Hi Alec,
This Print Exchange is for a mix of prints (see first post). Maybe you could facilitate a future Print Exchange that would be for only silver prints. :)
Best,
Darr
I would like to be included in this exchange.
Do most people print a different image for each of their group?
Hi Ron,
Some of us find it easier to print from one original, but you can print from as many originals as you choose. Just include enough prints to cover your group participants after that has been determined.

Hi Darr -
Count me in.
Darr - I'd suggest a deadline for shipping prints in about 2 or 3 months. So Mid March or a bit later.
Also, larger groups are better I think as we get to see the work of more people. I'd suggest 15 to 20 as a maximum group size.
Participants need to send their prints in containers that will hold 15 or 20 11x14 prints, even if they are only sending an 8x10.
All participants agree to either scan their own prints or allow someone else in the exchange to scan their print for inclusion on the LF Print Exchange web site that Darr set up last year.
Thanks for getting the ball rolling!

Print the number of prints so each participant in your group will receive one print. In groups one and two there are 10 participants each and in groups three and four there are 11. Since David Bram is in Group One, he will be printing 9 prints, and Al Olson who is in Group Four, will be printing 10 prints.
Prints are to be shipped NO LATER than Saturday, March 15, 2008 to the address below. Make sure you sandwich prints between layers of cardboard and write DO NOT BEND on the front and back of your package. NOTE: Prints cannot be shipped UPS to this address. PM me if this is a problem.

In the past we shipped additional shipping materials along with our prints for the return prints shipment. If you care to do this, that is fine, but I will not recycle the outside envelope. I will recycle the cardboard if it arrives in good shape. I will not supply cardboard or shipping materials for free. To anyone that is in need of shipping materials, I can offer for an additional US $4.00 the following return shipping packet.
9233
I have a mail order business and purchase these materials in bulk. It would include a heavy cardboard mailer, two archival backing boards and an archival bag that you can safely store the prints in for years to come. You are under no obligation to do this, and I am not making any money off of this, I am offering this as it may make some of this a little easier.
Ship your prints by March 15th and I will keep us all updated as they flow in. If you do not participate after all of this work, some of us will be disappointed :( . If you have an emergency and find it impossible to meet the deadlines, PM me.
Postage fees are to be paid in full by the participant before I ship. There are numerous ways to ship: USPS Priority, UPS, FedEx, USPS Global Priority and for our non-US participants you will need to figure how your prints get to me. I can recommend USPS Global Priority as the best way for me to ship the exchange prints back to you as customs is already pre-paid in the standard fee for most countries.
What I would prefer is for everyone to ship their prints to me and then let me package them up and PM everyone what the return fees will be. You can then either PayPal me the fees plus 3% or send me a check. In theory what you ship should weigh close to the same of what I ship back, but not always due to print size. Also remember to add $4.00 if you want the Return Shipping Package.
No matter how silly you think a question might be about this process, please post it here so I can respond and others may benefit. I look forward to receiving and enjoying all of the prints. Hopefully we will be viewing the entire 2007 Print Exchange in our on-line gallery in the near future. Now get printing!! :)
No more participants will be added -- the list is closed!

To be clear, you will need 9 prints from me plus $36 for shipping ?
David,
You do need to ship me nine prints, but I do not know what your return shipping charge will be yet.
My job in all of this is to be the collection house for the prints. After I receive the prints, I sort them out, bundle them up, and finally ship them out to each participant. Everyone ships one package and receives only one package. The prints are not shipped individually, but in a group according to the sort. That is why it is important that participants come through and deliver what they have pledge to do. I have heard some complain when participants did not do as planned. You should be receiving nine prints that will be a great surprise and inspire you! Imagine how you may feel if you only receive 6 or 4 prints and not 9 after you went through all of this work? But, that is NOT going to happen with this exchange because also part of my job is to help motivate when called to. ;)
BTW, the $4.00 Return Shipping Packet is an option I am offering to ship your nine group prints back to you if you do not care to send return shipping materials with your print shipment.
--
Everyone is responsible for their own shipping materials and costs to and from. If you choose not to purchase the $4.00 packet from me, you will need to include return shipping materials that will fit up to 12x15". This should include an outside bubble or cardboard mailer and at least two pieces of thick cardboard. We can usually recycle the cardboard you send with your prints, but not the original outside mailing container the prints are shipped to me in.
I hope this explains things better for everyone.
Best,
Darr

I normally send out prints in a plastic envelope with a cover sheet. Is it Ok to send the 9 prints each in their own envelope with a cover sheet?
Also you may want to make a waiting list of people interested but didn't get in before the cutoff. Because things happen in life someone may need to drop out and that way they could easily be replaced.

Hey Caleb,
It is because of folks like yourself I am motivated to organize and contribute to print exchanges and on-line galleries. I love looking at photography as much as I enjoy creating it. Maybe a little more enjoyment in looking at it. It is good news that you are having ..."oh.. decisions decisions...." :)

thanks darr,
i printed several images today. only a few to go.
FWIW it is possible to send stuff to a PO box using UPS. i learned this not too long ago. they do not tell us tis but they have an agreement with each other. if you address a package to the PO and put the box number on it the PO will put it in your box after the UPS guy drops it off. really! (ie. the kingston PO. 90 cornell st. kingston NY 12401 put box XYZ on it. the UPS driver will deliver it to 90 cornell st and the Postmaster will put it in box XYZ!)

Barry Trabitz
Barry,
As soon as everyone receives their prints, I will open the "upload link" on the LF Print Exchange Gallery (http://gallery55.org/lfgallery/index.php) site so everyone can upload JPEGs of their exchange print and share any information along with their photography.
I cannot scan the prints to be uploaded. I ask for each of us to do this or for volunteer(s) to assist those that cannot. It is not hard to upload JPEGs onto the site once the "2007 Print Exchange" section is opened. I will post instructions on how to do this and what size the JPEGs will need to be once we get to this stage of the process.
It is always a delight to see the collection of prints we create.
Thank you for asking.

Please Note: It is not necessary to mail postage/mailer payments with your prints. I will be e-mailing/PM everyone after I have them packaged up and weighed before I ship them back out. I will be doing the shipping a Group at a time. As soon as I receive a Groups entire prints, I will begin to wrap, weigh, email and ship. Hi Al,
No mail delivery on Sunday, but they do fill my box at the PO by 10:00 am Monday thru Saturday. FedEx has the contract for USPS Priority Mail and IMO does an outstanding job. When UPS tried to bid it away a year or so ago, some of us that are involved with internet retail businesses got REAL upset. Luckily UPS lost out! :)

Don Bryant
Hi Don,
I'll respond since I am the female. I have had communications with Helen Bach on this forum, but not any other female LF shooters come to mind. I have found in general throughout my photography career (pro and amateur), there are not too many females shooting LF. I studied LF at Portfolio Center in Atlanta back in the early '80s and I think I was one of three females in attendance. As a portrait photographer shooting medium format, I found many more female photogs specializing in portrait photography. While attending PP of A functions over the years, I found men out numbering the females. With the onset of digital cameras, I think more stay-at-home mothers have jumped on the children portraiture wagon and maybe this is a good thing. It is not as bad as the airline pilot profession (I personally could not be a commercial pilot), as I learned from being married to one for almost 25 years.
Best,
Darr

My prints are one the way at last. I won't give you the full list of things that can cause delay, but today's was that RC paper dries slower than FB on a drying press, making me miss today's mail by about an hour...

Well I still don't know your gender! :) I happen to know darr from other forums and private e-mails and I also have a couple of Helen's prints (who I forgot about). So if you are the other gender then there are 3 women members of LF Forum.

Thanks Don... it needs work though.. I havn't touched it forever. Nothing wrong with a good weiner roast I guess... although variety is always nice.

Pete,
I made it to USPS after hours yesterday and there was a notice in my box for an Express Package, so I am assuming it is yours. I will be there later today to pick it up!

If there's the same po box malarkey for me as has been reported elsewhere,

Hi Joseph,
International shipping can take much longer than shipments within the continental 48 states. I received one package from Switzerland that took seven days which amazes me and approximately two from Canada thus far. The rest are from within the 48 states. If after 21 days of shipping we do not see your package, then I would put a tracer on it, but I would not worry just yet.
Kind regards,
Darr
Thanks Darr-
Not that I'm actually looking forward to them arriving,
To receive is much better than to give,

yo alec! next time i see you i am going to give you some serious shit about sending your stuff by Fed x to PO box! DUH! :) :). you should have read my post #97!
"FWIW it is possible to send stuff to a PO box using UPS. i learned this not too long ago. they do not tell us tis but they have an agreement with each other. if you address a package to the PO and put the box number on it the PO will put it in your box after the UPS guy drops it off. really! (ie. the kingston PO. 90 cornell st. kingston NY 12401 put box XYZ on it. the UPS driver will deliver it to 90 cornell st and the Postmaster will put it in box XYZ!)"

Hey HEY!!! I was following the destructions per post #83 - only UPS was specifically excluded. Plus they took my form & my money without problems.
It was a mistake, but not as obvious a mistake as opening a film developing tank in daylight before fix (http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showpost.php?p=308809&postcount=16). :D

If anyone knows if he is on vacation, etc. please let me know. I have emailed with no answer. Thanks!

David Bram is not answering my e-mail, PM or this post even though he did respond to a post about Epson Exhibition Fiber paper today (http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showpost.php?p=333621&postcount=2). So I have to assume he is ignoring me.
Would anyone from Group Three or Group Four like to be added to Group One and leave their former group so we can get Group One's Prints out to mail next week?
First one to respond will be given the slot. BTW, your prints need to be in my possession right now to be added.
Thank you!

Shipping Status
I will wrap and weigh everyone's prints and forward an email/PM to them prior to shipping.
You can PayPal the monies or send me a check whatever is easiest. If you included shipping materials and/or postage payments do not worry, it will be noted in your email/PM. I will trust everyone and send your prints ahead of receiving your check. Payment must be made in US Funds. If you used the USPS service for US shipments, I will quote you Priority Mail unless you request something else. If you shipped FedEx, I will quote you FedEx. For our wonderful International photographers I will be quoting International Priority since it is the least expensive. This service is flown by FedEx and when I had an item sent to Ebony Japan for modification, I was very happy with their service. Also for our terrific Canadian photographers, I believe we have USPS Canadian Priority Mail.
My job at this point is to forward all this wonderful photography to you as soon as I can get to it. I will be dedicating most of my free time this weekend to it -- good timing I must say since I just came off of an extremely busy work cycle and a close friend from Atlanta is coming next weekend for a visit and not this weekend. :)
Group Three your prints will ship out in a timely manner as soon as I receive the last shipment which was already shipped by the photographer.
Thank you everyone and you'll be hearing from me soon!
Best,
Darr

Darr, The package arrived today. Please add my grateful thanks, to your list of kudos.
One question, will we be able to see a website with all the images as we did last year?
Barry.
Barry,
The short answer is YES. I own the server space over at gallery55.org where the LF Gallery (http://gallery55.org/lfgallery/index.php) currently presides and I can continue to donate the space for it. As soon as I can post instructions on how to upload photos over there, we can start to post them. Last time we did this however, most participants requested to wait until everyone has received their photos. Is this what most people want to do now? Wait until all participants (or most) have seen their photos first? Feedback please ...
Best,
Darr

Actually it went smooth mostly because of you guys, the participants. You made it easier on me by accepting my shipping packet and the fact that I had my kitchen table all to myself since my wonderful son went back to the dorm after Spring Break a week or so ago -- :) thank you! :D
I will be working on a participant demographics list of locations and will post it shortly. After I post this list, we'll see about the web gallery from responses about wait time. Remember we will need volunteers to scan and upload prints for others. If you are able to do this, please post in this thread after you receive your prints.
Thank you again to all of you wonderful participants!

The prints arrived! My wife and I drove right after the work to pick up the prints at the office before they close and only then to Trader Joe's for dinner shopping. We quickly went through prints at the parking lot :) and then carefully after we got back. Wonderful! And it all happened almost on my birthday :)
I admit this is the first time I could see a fine digital print. I am surprised by the quality. I saw some from a respected photographer and disappointed thought it was all the digital print had to offer.
