Epson V700 + 8x10" Negatives = Newton Rings

Dear Colleagues,

everything was o.k. between my Epson V700 and me as long as I was scanning 5x7 and smaller negatives in my self-made film holders. Now I made the step up to 8x10, and have to scan with that "film area guide", putting the negative directly on the glass, and of course the inevitable happens, newton rings all across the image. Have any of you solved that problem?

Do you have the film emulsion side down?

I've done this for 9x12cm negatives and positives, and only had a problem when I scanned them the wrong side down!

If you're having the emulsion side down and still get newton rings, the next solution would be to wet-mount the negatives.
There are plenty of threads and links about wet-mounting, but in short, you do have to seal the edges of the glass so that the mounting fluid doesn't get into the scanner. Else, yes, it's a bit messy, but quite easy once you get the hang of it.

I don't have a scanner yet, but plan to move in that direction in the future, so I'm watching all of these threads to learn.

Question: Does the anti-newton ring glass go above the negative, or below? I assume below.

If emulsion side down method does not work because your film's emulsion does not have enough tooth to it, then you might try anti Newton spray on the side of the film that will touch the scanner bed's glass and then use a piece of anti Newton glass on the back of the film to keep it flat. If your V700 scanner's optics are in specification, the lens should focus right at the glass level when scanning 8x10, so ideally you really don't want to add any glass underneath the film.

So regardless of not being all that into the digital process, I do scan my negs sometimes for proofing purposes and for my website now......... anyhow, a piece of anti-newton glass is really the answer.. Just make sure the anti-newton side of the glass is against the non-emulsion side. It really does work.

so you just replaced your scanner´s original glass with anti newton glass? Doesn´t the stucture of the glass diminish the resolution of the scanner? (I´d be happy if I found a way to do it without having to add another sheet of glass, which means, another two carriers of dust. The negative seems to rest flat enough without that.)

Wet mounting is a joy. if you want to use a consumer level scanner as opposed the other choices, then you should at least wet-mount. It's as simple as can be. It's just fluid, no oil or mess or anything. I use Kami myself and have been very happy with it.
