View Full Version : What to do with color negs?

I've got a box of 4x5 Portra that I just get developed, no contacts. Actually, the pro lab I take it to now ships it off somewhere in Socal in San Juan Capistrano or San Clemente or something (www.prophotoirvine).

So I got some 4x5 negs...what if I want to make a print? What are my options these days? Scan and print on ? I don't even know what kind of paper I can get. Or does someone actually still do C-prints?

For positives, does anyone still do Ilfochromes?

There are a few places that still do C-prints, one of the best known in the US being Duggal (www.duggal.com), located in New York city. A&I, on the west coast, also used to do it but I don't know if they still do it. I am lucky in this respect because my local pro lab (in Princeton) still does everything, except Ilfochrome.

There are also some places in NYC and elsewhere that do Ilfochrome.

Good luck with your search!

Best wishes,
Sanjay

I used to take a lot of work to duggal back in the 80's. Is Baboo still around? I'll try A&I, they aren't too far and I think I can send work to them by mail. I thought Duggal and all the E6th street gang were somewhere else now.

Sorry, I am not familiar with the folks at Duggal. I used to get my Scala processed by them until they stopped doing Scala. Other than that I get all my color processing/printing done by the local pro lab to avoid the hassles of shipping, but I believe you can ship orders to both Duggal & A&I.

I have compiled a (short) list of places that still do Ilfochrome processing, from information gathered from posts here and in APUG. If you want I can post that here (it's on my home PC), but I haven't used any of those services.

Sanjay

I think you should post the list, if only to make people aware of these services so they get used, thereby keeping some demand in place for the process.

Duggal is still quite a sizable business, and they still make C-prints by projection and digitally.

C-prints, gentlemen?

The question was about prints from negatives, not slides...

Yes, a C-print by projection is a print from a negative. Digital C-prints may also be from slides. Color prints by projection from slides are either R-prints (I don't think there are any R-print materials anymore), or Ilfochromes, generically called "dye-bleach prints" even if there is no other process for making dye-bleach prints.

Yes, although the thread title is about color negs, the OP asks in the first post if anyone still does Ilfochromes. I posted the list as a response to his question.

The last time I checked a couple of years ago, a rep at Duggal told me that they had stopped doing "direct prints from slides" (I had some Scala slides) - they still do a lot of other things.

Colorchrome Atlanta no longer makes Ilfochrome/Cibachrome prints or C-Prints for that matter. It's all inkjet output now.

Don, I was not sure about that one. :) I had it in my notes, but I checked their website yesterday and didn't find any mention of Ilfochrome. I did find a reference somewhere that they still do it, so I left it in the list. Thanks for the correction.

Why not scan and print by inkjet?

Are you making this up?
Why did you shoot them (4x5 color negatives) if you don't know what to do afterwards? For example, why didn't you have contacts made at the time?
