I find bridges to be an interesting subject. This thread is for photographs of bridges. Here is a recent photograph of the Golden Gate Bridge taken last Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately image restrictions and the JPEG format reduce the luminosity (shadow detail) of this image. Taken with a Shen-Hao 4x10 and 480mm APO Ronar on Bergger 200 a print at 72dpi is 12.65' x 31.45'.

My favorite subject, by far. Unfortunately, I don't have a scanner.

Old truss bridges are my favorite, but the Golden Gate is my favorite suspension bridge, especially as viewed from the park at the north end.

Ditto on favourite subject. I, too am sans scanner though.
(Somewhere in amongst the negs is a pic of the bottom-side of the Golden Gate taken from the deck of a destroyer as she passed underneath)

Oklahoma does indeed have quite a history of old bridges, as evidenced in Gene's pics. (good pics!!) Three summers ago, I spent weekends driving backroads of Oklahoma from Ok. City south and west taking old highway and railroad bridges. Quite a plethora of them that are long abandoned.

One set of pics I shot brings to mind a subject of accessability and "right-to-photograph". I took a set in downtown OKC, late evening, set up in the middle of the road, of the super-structure of bridges running beside the Ford Center. Police drove by, looked at me like I was stupid, and told me I shouldn't be standing in the middle of the road like that, to please move to the sidewalk, and drove off. Anyone (esp. NYC) ever hassled for shooting bridges?

Anyone (esp. NYC) ever hassled for shooting bridges?

I've often gotten hassled for photographing bridges, but almost never on my home turf. The one exception was in the National Park at the south end of the Verrazano Bridge. As we were setting up tripods, park police told us we couldn't photograph, despite the hundred or so tourists standing right beside us that they DIDN'T hassle as they took the same shot.

NYPD tend to be curious, and have often looked at the GG, but have never hassled me. They're usually quite polite and wait until I've finished setting up or taking the photo.

NJ and PA state and local police along both sides of the Delaware River have been almost apoplectic when I've photographed there. Even when I'm photographing small bridges on the side roads, and not the main spans over the river.

Kinda envy Paul and Terence. Between Manhattan and Jersey ya got more than a few bridges to shoot. We lived in Nyack for about a year and a half, with me working from Midtown Nanhattan to de Bronx, to White Plains. Got to see TOO MANY bridges. Plenty of time to take pics of them at 7:00 a.m., though... Especiallyfrom mid-bridge...

Great subject - but not easy to do well. I've spent lots of time and wasted lots of film trying to get better than just get snapshots of bridges. Here are two I'm happy to share. And three on the next post.

The first is a footbridge at an alligator swamp on Sapelo Island, GA.
The second is of the supports of an old railway bridge in the Lehigh Valley, PA.

And the next three:

This is Stockley Bridge over Grain Gill in the English Lake District. It's (allegedly) the wettest place in England.
The second is a lovely footbridge at Cong Abbey in Ireland.
And the third is the Millennium Bridge (aka the Bouncey Bridge) across the Thames in London leading to St Pauls Cathedral.

I've been to this location several times. The pond there isn't exactly what we call a swamp down south but there is sometimes an alligator or two seen there. Unfortunately they are poached frequently.

The Kilmarnock lock bridge near Smith Falls, Ontario on a very grey day. The rain was just starting and the clouds were touching the treetops when I shot this. I think it's a scan of a 4x5 contact print. The film was FP4+ in a Calumet monorail. I never have any luck with scans - the prints are much nicer. On this one the timber framing that supports the bridge is washed out and on the prints it is as clear as a bell (I just went to look...)

I think they had something to do with the weather, but I'm not absolutely sure. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will chip in...

Not to protect from snow and ice (sorry) but, as Ed said, covered bridges were thus to protect the timbers under the span. In the day, the main supports were simply large logs, and were not chemically treated to preclude rot. The covered spans lasted something like 3 times as long as uncovered.

These are MF (GA 645zi), not LF, but hopefully I'll be forgiven if there are 3 bridges in two pictures. There's a handout at the Auburn (CA, near Sacramento) State Recreation Area called the "Confluence Self Guided Trail" and the many bridges, most long gone, across the American River in that area are featured parts of the trail.

First is the "No Hands Bridge," or more boringly called the Mountain Quarries RR Bridge, that is now a pedestrian bridge. Apparently riding across it on a horse without holding onto the reins (presumably before the guard rail was installed) is how the bridge got the "No Hands" nickname.

Next are the old (lower) and new (upper) Foresthill Bridges. The new was done in 1973 with the anticipation of flooding the valley, the water line would have been just below the metal arch, but the dam was never built. The new one at 730' above the water line is the tallest bridge in California, and is quite popular in TV and movies (the little handout says it was in "Breakdown" and "XXX") and probably really popular with base jumpers.

The longest covered bridge in the world is in Hartland, New Brunswick (not that far from New England, actually ;)). I saw it on a family trip (38 years ago ) and am happy to see via Google that it still exists.

None of my dad's snaps of the bridge are within easy reach, alas. Anyway, he used a Pentax Spotmatic, not LF. Any of our Canadian or New England LFers been by there recently?

Certainly - providing a cover over the bridge protected the road surface from snow during the winter.

Prior to the twentieth century, roads were not commonly plowed in the winter. Instead, horsedrawn carriages were equipped with skids for the winter, and would simply slide over the top of the snow. It's not ususual here in the northeast to have 5-6 feet of snow in a winter, and there are winters when there could be several feet of snow accumulation at one time. That's a lot of weight for the bridge to carry.

Absent plows, the only way to prevent that weight from accumulating on bridges was to manually shovel it off. Those clever Yankees recognized that building a sloped roof over the bridge would cause the snow to simply slide off into the river and save them the effort of shoveling.

There is also an old bridge near Keremeos, BC, Canada. Originally it was Great Northern Railroad's bridge but after their demise up here, it was later converted to accomodate the automobile. The sides are covered but the top isn't. I wonder why? They do get quite a bit of snow there in winter...

Gallon House Bridge is one of approximately 50 surviving covered bridges in Oregon.

So named because, at one time, Silverton (on one side of the bridge) was a "dry" town while Mount Angel (on the other side) was not. People from Silverton who wanted a drink could leave their money at a location near the bridge, and return later to find their spirits. A popular order was for a gallon jug....

It's certainly worth visiting, especially when the weather and seasonal coloring, lend additional impact. (My image was made on a clear summer day, in some light haze).

You can pay a small fee (a few dollars at most) and drive to the top, or park for free at the base, and walk up. Along the way, there are many photo opportunities - not vistas, but views into deep forest, boulders, etc.

I don't know if anyone answered this but covered bridges were used because horses are afraid of high places. The bridges were covered to make the horses think that they were going into a barn.

That is a real bridge! I took the boys on a bike ride on the Route of the Hiawatha -- a rails-to-trails from Montana to Idaho. It has a trestle that is 175 feet tall, and a few others close to that. But they were converted from wood to steel a long time ago. It also has a few tunnels -- one that is 1.66 miles long...flashlights (and jackets) required.

Great images guys, and educational too!

Since the Golden Gate Bridge is well represented, I thought I'd throw one in of the "other" bay area bridge:

9346

Actually San Francisco Bay is crossed by 7 bridges with the Golden Gate being by far the most famous. But the Bay Bridge above which goes from downtown San Francisco to Treasure Island (a famous name itself!) and then to Oakland runs a close second in my opinion, especially the SF to treasure Island section shown above at night.

I have a photograph of the bridge near my house called " the St. Johns bridge". I think it is the most beautiful bridge in Portland, and we have many bridges here. This is one of 2 images I made while I had the use of a 17x17 camera awhile back.

I'm posting this photograph of a bridge more to tell the story behind it than for its merit. But first I have to show you a photograph of a tank...

About a year ago I bought an old Zeiss Ikon folder. The evening the camera came in the mail I went for a ride around town to take some test photographs. While driving by a natural gas tank farm I liked the evening light on the tanks, so I took a couple of photos.

Afterwards I drove about a mile to the center of town where there's a picturesque river and falls. As I was scouting around for a shot, a couple of policemen came up to me. The first thing they asked me was if I had ever heard of 911. I didn't understand? They told me that a guard at the tank farm had made a suspicious activity report. Me! I was thunderstruck. I thought, how did they even find me? And why? The tank farm is clearly visible in Google Earth? No secrets here. They had to have driven all over town looking for my pickup.

I cooperated and answered all their questions, thinking that maybe in some small way the terrorists had won.

A couple of months went by and the FBI showed up at my house. I was in the garage piddling around and invited them in. We had another nice conversation. I have never been questioned for taking a picture. Have we lost some of our freedoms?

Oh, the photo of the bridge? I snapped that of the two policeman as they were leaving. :-)

A very long time ago (~1971), I vacationed with my Grandfather near Souix Narrows, Ontario. At that time, there was a large wooden bridge that I was told was the world's longest wooden single span bridge. All this was before I discoverd photography so I have no photos. Does anyone have any?

Another one from the same bridge. By the way, I dropped my Pentax digital spot in the water for this one. It was under for 10-15 seconds. I took the battery out and dried it with my T-shirt, and it kept on working - awesome! There seems to be a bit of water behind the eyepiece - I'll be posting elsewhere about that if it doesn't go away!

Nice, h2oman!

My Pentax took a similar swim in Cascade Creek in Yosemite, but perhaps a bit shorter one (no more than 5 seconds). I had lost my balance while setting up the 8x10 and I had to make a choice between the meter and the 8x10 (w/lens). No ill effect on the meter.

Vaughn

Edited to add: Just read you other post about the meter. I never took it apart. I have taken apart the non-digital Pentax spot meter, though and the lens screwed off, if I remember right.

I keep trying for that perfect shot of a structure that may soon be history. Can't believe they're talking about wanting to raise it or tear it down.

I'm also wondering where the vertical jitter came from in this shot. A time exposure taken from a solid pier so there should not have been any up and down movement with the water flow. Perhaps the bridge moving? I doubt it although possible I guess. Or a bit of aerodynamic lift on the camera from the breeze... seems more likely.

Good excuse to go back. Bob G.

In the general neighborhood of ISO 1 with the Hoya IR72 filter. Even with the fog, it was a "sunny f16" day, as the fog was thin that day, so very bright. I went with f16 and 1 sec and the bridge is nearly clear on the negative. The other 3 IR shots that day were taken before the fog lifted, and aren't really all that useful. I've learned that Efke IR820 is a sunny day film for me, which we have plenty of in California.

I was given the opportunity to test a truly remarkable lens. There's no name on it, but it was put together by SK Grimes, and according to Jake at Blue Moon Camera & Machine in St. Johns, it is Nikkor glass. The focal length is 760mm, and it's on a #5 Ilex shutter that works like a dream. The optics are uncoated. I used my Kodak Commercial Studio camera, which has a yard of bellows draw, and it took all of it to bring the image into focus. I set it up on my tripod, but I didn't have the proper adaptor, so I tied the camera on with a shoelace. Hey, it worked. The only trouble was that I it wasn't steady enough to take a long exposure. So I had to shoot at f22. Some of the image is out of focus. The in-focus areas are incredibly sharp. Jake told me that I was likely to be the first person in 40 years to shoot this bridge on 8x10 film with such a long focal length lens. We'll see. I like the lens a lot.

I shot the image on Adox CHS 100 Art, developed at N+1 in Clayton F76+. I chose semi-stand development because I wanted to heighten edge effects to counter the low-contrast, cloudy skies.

Camera: Kodak Commercial Studio 8x10.
Lens: 760mm SK Grimes construction of unknown origin.
Film: Adox CHS 100 Art.
Printed on Forte Polywarmtone RC developed in Ansco 120: a soft working developer. Untoned. I used Agfa Sistan for permanence.

Glad to see a section dedicated to bridges!! Here's one of my favorites in all of NYC...

HellGate Bridge (originally the New York Connecting Railroad Bridge or The East River Arch Bridge) is a 1,017-foot (310 m) steel through arch railroad bridge between Astoria, Queens and Randall's Island in New York City, over a portion of the East River known as Hell Gate.

The engineering was so precise that when the last section of the main span was lifted into place, the final adjustment needed to join everything together was 1⁄2 inches (12.7 mm).

Nice shots, with Velvia blues to match the bridge's name. I prefer the swooping perspective of the first, though I find the railing at the bottom intrusive. I'm not sure exactly how you would solve that, though I've sometimes leaned the tripod over the brink to avoid such obstacles.

The shots take me back a bit. I grew up in the Detroit area, and Sarnia was often a faster way eastward than Ohio and the turnpikes.

Thanks for the compliments everyone. This bridge is funny - it is essentially right in our town, but fellow residents who see photos I have of it are always surprised when I tell them it is right here. It is a little far from any main roads, but still...

Perhaps the greatest thing photography has done for me is allow me to see so much more than I used to.

Doug -

This is a great shot, and meaningful for me.

I grew up in Jacksonville - my parent's home was a few blocks from the Trout River. My dad loved to fish, and I recall many Saturday mornings when he would put the boat into the water at the boat launch at the end of Pearl Street, and while we never went all the way to the ocean, we frequently would pass under this bridge and then head north on the St Johns.

Across the Bridge, Down the Path

Gelatin-silver photograph on Fomabrom Variant 111 VC FB, image area 24.7cm X 19.5cm, from a Fomapan 200 negative exposed in a Tachihara 810HD triple extension field view camera with a 400mm single meniscus lens at f22.

The bridge across Weyba Creek is a confection of hardwood planks and beams bleached grey by hard sunshine. Only pedestrians, cyclists, and the occasional large format photographer linger there. Because the bridge runs east-west the rails and shadows often conspire to fashion as many "leading lines" as one could wish for in a photograph.

Curiously the single meniscus lens working at f22 appears to exhibit "tunnel focus". Because the transition between "in focus" and "out of focus" is so gentle the photograph, while nowhere actually sharp, seems to show more depth of field than it deserves.
