I have two photographs to share. When the covered bridge was made it was one of two covered bridges left in North Carolina. It has since burned.
Number two was made showing a RR bridge, plus the North and South Bound lanes of I-85 in North Carolina.

This is Highbridge, completed 1848. It is the oldest surviving bridge in NYC, and the original portions are quite beautiful. It originally carried water to NYC from the Croton Aqueduct/Reservoir. It needs a good cleaning.
I used back swing to emphasize the near portion of the scene... 4x5

Very nice! I've had the chance to do some work at the other end of the system, at the New Croton Dam. It is an amazing engineering resource, considered overall, and you've done a great job with this bridge.

Bronx side, there is an overpass that goes over the Metro North tracks off of the Deegan Expwy.
Thanks all... I expect to burn some more sheets on the bridge before they "renovate it" and open it once again to pedestrians/bikes.

Took a few shots this morning. One pretty old bridge (well, the lower tunnel portion), and another bridge (not as old). Both were Delta 100. Both Developed in DD-X. BTW, it is really not easy to take large format pictures when it is snowing (trying to hold the umbrella [while changing lenses, focusing, etc] so I don't have to keep wiping the lens, etc...). I am sure there is a trick.

Excuse my ignorance but is it normal for whole plate images to be reversed?
life_in_sepia
6-Apr-2011, 10:39
Hi Scott. This is a tintype -- a positive on blackened aluminum. As a positive, the image is taken upside down and reversed. I uprighted the image, but did not correct the reversal. In sum, you get this reversal effect with any positive image, whether dag, wet plate, or other (though of course it can be corrected in digital format). In sum, the reversal is normal for positive images, regardless of plate size. I hope that explanation is understandable, and not pedantic. Ed

Thanks for the explanation Ed, I thought that was the case but not having any experience with the process I just had to finally ask.

Bradley,
Thank you. There are certain times when this bridge really shines. Night time is one of them. Now that it is a double-span it offers some other perspectives as well. Otherwise the surroundings not that interesting. IMHO but I love the area, grew up around there myself.

There's a lift bridge in Duluth, MN of the same type - it was originally a "ferry bridge", with a car that was pulled by cables from side to side.

You would have enjoyed the location where the taker of this photo was: standing on ice-covered boulders over a Lake Superior breakwater with 3' waves rolling in. That was exciting! A few minutes later I was hauling my camera & tripod over said boulders, slipped on the ice, and whoop! - down I went, gear falling on top of me. Fortunately we didn't go all the way into the drink, but it got my blood pumping for sure.

Yes. And it's fun to cross the Willamette on your bike alongside one of those trains as well!
I hear Steel Bridge is the only double-deck bridge with independent lifts in the world.
In any case, though there are more glamorous bridges in Portland, Steel Bridge is one of my favorites as well.

Here is an old bridge in rural Quitman, GA. It is known locally as "Spook Bridge" and has many urban legends associated with it, all with the tagline of it being haunted. It's a very nice, quiet place, but has been marred with lots of spray-painting.
This image was taken with a Nikon 90mm f/8 on a Zone VI Wista with T-Max 100 film, rated at 50 and developed N-1 with T-Max RS diluted 1:9. This was an experiment using this dilution and rating one stop slower than box but developing N-1 for scanning purposes. I pumped the contrast in Photoshop and warm-toned it. I am really happy with the results though of course would love to hear opinions about it:

However, I do prefer your more animate subjects. Sorry. :D

In fact, the role of a bridge in the river city is a vital shot of the bridge belongs to another branch of architectural photography, the lines of the bridge can be used as a good guide line to help focus on the introduction screen, so as to achieve the purpose of the photographers.Bridge classes, most buildings have a different perspective, different surfaces, different attitude and different characteristics for the camera, when you are around that are interested in shooting the buildings move around, carefully observe the line of sight up and downthe details of the building and found the building showing the characteristics of smooth and coordinated. At the same time, we should observe the angle of the building exposed to light, to determine when the light on the screen is the most ideal. Different focus of the lens, the lens focal length adjustment can significantly affect the appearance of the building.

Hi Peter,
Nice shot.
I would have panned a bit to the left, dropping the part of a tree and the stream bank on the right, and bringing the damaged railings closer to the center to emphasize them.
Just a suggestion. Nice work.

I appreciate your comment as well. When I was down in the creek scoping it out, your view was my first instinct. Not as much to emphasize the broken railing, but because I thought I would liked what the bold division of the center support, along with the horizontal road bed would've done to the image. When I looked through the groundglass though it was too evenly divided by the strong horizontal and vertical lines, so I decided to shoot it off center and follow the creek instead. There's more potential down there though and I will go back again and try to make it work from a different angle.
Thanks again for the thoughtful comments.

I shot this with my Betterlight scan back. The tones didn't lend themselves to B&W at this hour, and the red algae in the water contrasting with the green bridge almost demanded color. Also I wanted to have a wider view of the structure to go with the details shots.

Strange to see a N.Y. bridge so void of (pedestrian) traffic ... not that I would know, living 3000 miles away. Just my preconceived assumption. Maybe has to do with the hour and the weather.
Peter
Thanks, Peter. Normally this bridge is packed with people, but this was a very cold and rainy night. Only very hardy tourists and one idiot with a tripod were braving the elements.

Hi Joe
Probably the same bridge you're thinking of, but not on Hwy 58. It's past Hwy 58 another mile or two. Left on Las Pilitas Rd. for a few miles.

You guessed right. Is hard to find a good time when there aren't a lot of people on it. My wife and I jog over and back on it some mornings and I'm always thinking, "Damn, I wish I had my camera."

Here's "Indian Timothy Bridge" on a stream running into the Snake River. In the 1930's this commemorated an Indian who saved some settlers from attack. Later the state named a park after him, elevating him to "Chief Timothy." Now we've closed the park and abandoned the bridge. Such is gratitude and fame!

Here's some work from last week on very expired Tri-X Pack Film on my Busch Pressman, w/ 135mm f/4.7. A truly wonderful tank of a camera.
This bridge is on Route 66, on the west side of Oklahoma City (still inside the city limits, actually). The historic bridge was restored a few years ago, and still carries quite a bit of traffic, though there is a 6 lane bridge next to it.
These were shot with old Kodak Tri-X Pack Film (expired probably sometime in the 60s). I had to cut the sheets down a little to fit into the negative holder on the V700. Is there any way to date the film? It says it's "Kodak Safety Film," which leads me to believe it's super old. I also have 16 sheets of ancient Plus-X Pack Film to shoot!

This is a footbridge across the I&M Canal, built in the late 1830's to connect Chicago to the Mississippi River, and hence to connect the Great lakes to the Gulf of Mexico. The old building was the Lock tender's residence and the stone structure is the limestone lock assembly. SHot with the Eastman 2D 8X10 with the 5X7 reducing back. The lens is a Bausch and Lomb Protar VII in a Compound Shutter. This canal lock is located near Minooka Illinois and my home town of Lockport was the canal headquarters, founded in 1835.

A very intriguing shot! The bridge almost looks like it was drawn in by hand, but the foreground rocks kind of contravene the idea that it's an architect's rendering of a bridge.

Took this a few weeks ago enroute home via the Old Glenn Highway north from Anchorage. Once again the clouds were out in all their glory and I decided to stop at the Old Glenn Highway bridge just outside of Butte, Alaska. No longer used, the bridge crosses over the Matanuska River and is now used as a conduit for power lines running thru the area.

Here is the underside of an aqueduct that once carried the Erie Canal over Onondaga Creek here in downtown Syracuse. It is now undergoing some renovations, in part to deal with the damages done during a disastrous collapse in 1907, when the barrel vault supporting the west chamber (second picture) collapsed and allowed the water of the canal to drain out. The City's engineers allowed me head down there in the past couple of weeks to record things before they cover over the evidence of the 1907 collapse.
