What constitutes a "large format" albumen print from the nineteenth century? What minimum size would the print have to be to be considered large format? Thanks for helping this greenhorn!

I don't think they had the term "large format" back in the nineteeth century. I think that is relatively recent terminology to distinguish between 35mm (miniature) and the other "non LF" sizes.

As late as 1910, a German authority stated that film formats smaller than 13x18cm (5x7") were "too small for serious work".

While the "large format" designation was not in use at that time, I think we can safely conclude that 5x7" was not considered "large", and that "larger cameras" - meaning "larger than necessary for anything but getting larger negatives for making big prints" could have started at 24x30cm (9.5x12")

Thanks to both of you!
