I have just received the word from the factory that all 45N-1 orders except those few who requested late shipping were shipped today by EMS. Over the weekend, I will send the tracking information to each of you who is due to receive your camera.

Sweeeet... All I have to do now is tell the wife I'm getting a new camera and wait for 'The Look'. If all I get is 'The Look' then I'll be extremely lucky. The next time I'm on here I might be typing in a high pitch voice...

I'm chuffed, really chuffed, but I'm also very scared!

Amund's post WAS the seed for me to get this camera. I already have three 4x5 cameras and really don't need a fourth, but when I saw how good it looked, how light it is and it was less than the price of a typical reducing back ....

The mighty Chamonix are on the way
Touching down at SFO and JFK
Remember to give the postman a holiday token
Lest you find your ground glass broken
The lingering of a lonely few--left in Haining and Hangzhou
Will it take a minister's order--to get these cameras across the border
Not to worry, they'll be on another flight
We know you want to be shooting tonight

"Mismatch advised" - I think that happens when you order maple with silver metal, but I could be wrong.

I'm wondering whether or not the tracking system is perfect. It appears that shipments to the US are being tracked accurately, however those to Canada and the UK appear to have 'stalled'.

Husband just got a call from the local Police that they found a stack of empty boxes from my street. One of them had my husband's name on it. Apparently some crook waited until the UPS guy finished leaving packages and grabbed them all and emptied them.

Made my heart skip a beat until I remembered that:

1) My 45N-1 was in my name
2) the USPS didn't leave it at the door -- it's waiting for me at the post office.

Boy-- almost gave me an arrhythmia.

Robert,

After this week, they will busy making whole plate, 8x10, 5x8/5x7 and a few 16x20 and possibly one or two 11x14 cameras.

We have also some requests for maple 4x5 film holders to match the cameras.

I'm resigned to not get it before Christmas. Once it arrives in the UK it will be atleast a day in customs and then forwarding to your local ParcelForce office. Then you'll have to wait for a letter from ParcelForce to tell you how much to pay before picking it up. My only hope is that it arrives at my local parcelforce and I can go and claim it before I get their letter... :-(

Eddie,

That tripod is really for a Chamonix ULF camera.:)

Barry,

Your camera has not arrived, I beg for another poem, PLEASE!

Rick,

Seriously, you were joking about a little brother for your Chamonix 8x20, right? How could you possibly look at the tiny 4x5 negatives again?

Everybody,

I have learned and still am learning a lot from the people in this forum and this is my little payback to all the kindness and friendship I get from your guys. I am with you in that slow wait and now joy.

The current batch of 45N-1 cameras is all gone. The next batch is July 2008. Yes, we will make some holders and other accessaries for this camera later next year.

I expect all of you will receive your camera this week or early next week latest. Your camera has 60 day warrenty and life time parts replacement. PM me for any question.

I am jumping on a plane tomorrow morning for Beijing to visit my aging parents in a nortehrn coast city in China. I will be back to California in two weeks. Before I go, I want to say a big THANK YOU and wish everybody A VERY HAPPY HOLIDAY!

Thank you Hugo for handling this so smoothly.

I quickly set up and played with the camera a little. For anyone who is interested the bellows is very compact, and will allow for a 47mm XL to be focused using a flat board.

Tomorrow I will take it into the back yard and put it through it's paces.

So evil Eddie, I should have it today.

I didn't get mine yesterday like I expected. The website says it was delivered to the "Unit at Kaneohe", which I thought mean my apartment, but I think it actually means the Post Office - which is 3 miles from my house.

I just received # 028...maple and black...

WOW! What a gorgeous piece of equipment! I was looking at the Canham DLC...I think this is a much better camera (and it's a whole lot cheaper too)...the craftsmanship is amazing. I hope to shoot some sheets thru it this weekend. We are getting some snow in CO.

I am very excited about my decision to get a Chamonix...if anyone out there is still wondering...you won't regret getting one!

Mine is here as well. Maple and Black. Sweet!!!!!

Like others here, I was absolutely blown away with how light this thing is. There are so many little fine details, that this is going to take me sometime to figure out all of them. Sweet is all I can say. I'll be running a few sheets through on Sunday, and will give the Horseman 6x12 back a try as well. I'll upload a couple of pictures of the camera as well, when I get a chance.

I'm thrilled I took the chance. Thanks Hugo for putting this together for us. I owe you BIG time!!!

Mine has made it to Tonopah! Put a lens kit together for it last evening and taking it with me this AM to So. Cal. 75mm 4.5 Rodenstock, 125mm 5.6 Fujinon (my fave), 210mm Computar f9, 270mm modified Turner Reich (soft-portraits), and a 305 G-Claron.

It surely is gorgeous!! Thanks Hugo.

I really think that you deserve some sort of reward. Your thread has created a demand for 50 cameras !! I reckon that they should give you a couple of wooden 4x5 film holders or something.

Your email was at the very least a tipping point....

after playing with my camera for a few days i would like to make two suggestions for the next run. very minor, only a couple oif extra bells and whistles

the centering marks on the bottom of the front standard and the centering marks for the rise and fall should also be included on the backs. this way it is very easy to see "where you are" while operating the camera from behind (photographers position). again, only a luxury.....

22-Dec-2007, 13:19
I notice there are two sets of centering marks for rise and fall on the front standard arms. The top marks are silver and the marks just below are black. Any idea why there are two sets and which set should be used to zero rise and fall?

Don Hutton
22-Dec-2007, 13:26
Barry

I believe that they are for the two different iterations of Linhof Technika type boards - some manufacturers like Linhof, Ebony and others have an off-center hole - slightly below center. In this case, you use the top mark - others like Tachihara use a centered hole - in which case use the lower dot.

BarryS
22-Dec-2007, 13:46
Don -- Thanks, I was thinking that might be it, but I'm new at LF, so I don't assume anything. Unfortunately the black marks on black standard arms is very difficult to see and I've already purchased lens boards with centered holes. I'd like to see all the calibration markings on the 45N-1 done in a contrasting color. The inscribed marks on the carbon fiber extension base are needlessly obscure and the rear standard tilt marks are also black on black. The extension base could also use some numeric markings for repeating movements. Nothing major, but some small changes that would improve useability.

I had some time to use the camera today as well as to show it off to a few photo buddies. I am very impressed with the operation of the camera. The build quality is very high as are the little details.

I would like to three things:
- a longer screw for the front standard. I feel the current one is too short.
- a cold shoe on the rear standard
- zero detents for the rear standard

Other than this, it is an exceptional camera at an exceptional price. It is so good, I am going to order
an 8x10.

What is the fastest way folks have found to level the back standard when using a ballhead?

Hi all!
The thread is slowing down. Looks like everybody (except maybe in UK) received their cam and are out shooting.
I will be ordering one soon.
Questions:
1. How do you fold the front frame? it seems there is no hinge.
2. How do you turn the ground glass holder for landscape or portrait?
3. It looks like the front focusing rail is motioned with a screw mounted below the ground grass. Is that Correct?
4. And finally, would you exchange your Chamonix for 2 Arca-Swiss Misura?

Have fun out there in the cold !..

Merry Christmas!

hello, you can see from this picture (http://forum.getdpi.com/gallery/showimage.php?i=296&c=48&orderby=title&direction=ASC&cutoffdate=-1)
that there are two small "wings" you lift up to remove the back.

you remove the front standard andd then the back folds forward.

yes, you focus with the screw

NO. i am not willingto trade or sell! i should have bought two!

cheers

eddie

ps. i am happy i do not live in the UK!

I wouldn't pay a whole lot of attention to EMSs website. Unless EMS has service to your country, it has to turn the package over to someone else; for US packages were turned over to the USPS. It is up to USPS to keep EMS updated where the package is. I would think that is the case here. Whoever EMS turned the package over to hasn't updated EMS. I'll bet your package is in UK customs.

I received my camera this past Wednesday and I too am very impressed with the quality, weight and functionality of this camera. I am very tempted to take it to Ghana in two weeks for a shoot because of it's portability and size. I hope Hugo can work something out so that a bag bellows will be made available. I hope owners will post their experiences in the field with this camera and I will try to do likewise.

If the camera platform is level and your rear standard is up against these so-called zero detents, is your rear standard really vertical? Mine is not.

On my camera, if the camera platform is level and the front standard is locked into the uprights, the from standard is truly vertical. Not so on the rear - if the rear standard is up against these so-called zero detents the back standard is tilted 2-3 degrees back.

Would someone please check their camera to see if these slide-out stops on the rear are meant to zero the rear standard when the platform is level?

I'd bet anything they're all in the UK waiting to be cleared through customs. After mine left Hangzhou, it arrived at JFK airport--and then it was on to my local post office. I'm sure it's frustrating, but the Cham is worth the wait and just think--the next 45N-1's won't be ready until July.
