There are two original Phillips Compacts on Ebay right now. I just wanted to share the info so that people can see what the first Compact editions looked like before the black ones came out. It's great to see the evolution of such a great camera. Enjoy!

Why did one of these sell for almost $1100.00 more than the other? Looks like the same model. They both look to be in fine condition. Did someone pay to much for the higher priced one or did some one get a great deal in the cheaper one?

haha and Adorama doesn't exactly have the greatest track record either...

For an 8x10 Compact, even the lower of those two prices is mind-bending. It's a sweet camera, but also a spartan one that's missing some of the creature comforts of the Compact II...

Damn straight Oren. The first one sold for around $2500, right? It's great to see that Phillips' cameras are still so desirable (gives me a little ego about mine). I was talking to Keith Canham at the Photo East Expo and he was telling me that last time he talked to Dick, the last batch of Explorers are only running at about 15 cameras. I wonder how many of his cameras there are out there in total.

I've seen a recent camera with a serial number in the 5xx range. OTOH, the 8x10 Compacts have serial numbers of the form YYNNN, and I think at least some of his other early cameras do as well, and I don't know whether those are counted as part of the later unified numbering.

The overall number can't be huge. If he built 20-40 cameras a year (wild guess) over a period of 25 years (another guess), the total might not reach 1000.

My explorer which I just got is serial number 544.
