A cheap alternative when you are in a crunch is water pipe insulators sold at places like hardware stores, Home Depots, etc. There are very common here in Canada along with other insulating materials. Dark grey, about 2-3 feet in length each, and they have a slit along one side. The foam is a little coarser too than the proper covers I have seen.

Not perfect, but for a buck or two each, they get the job done.

I have always used pipe insulation on my tripod legs, they make in gray or tan here in the states, I have also used a product called water noodles, sold at walmart and other discount stores, they are a bit thicker and come in various neon colors, it look odd, but sure draws the comments with I set up!

I have used bicycle handlebar padded tape. I use double stick tape to make it adhere, and it absorbs the sweat from my hands. An added bonus is that it comes in various colors, I have red on my carbon fiber tripod and it makes it very visible.

I also use hot water pipe insulation and duct tape; not pretty, but the price is right!

I use Grip Tape, available from www.grip-tek.com. It doesn't provide a great deal of padding, but the insulation is more that adequate for CF or aluminum legs, and it affords some leg protection. At seven years and counting on a couple of my CF tripods, it has proven quite durable. It's adhesive backed, so it's easy to install. Unlike many other coverings I've tried, it's also reasonably easy to remove.

A friend showed me his new (to him, aka used) tripod today that he bought with Manfrotto neorene wraps. I've never seen before, but they are really nice. Worth tracking down.

A sling may be the handiest carrying aid. It's a slight nuisance to keep it on the tripod, but still worthwhile.
