Here's one from early October 2006. Lower peninsula Michigan. Film is 400PortraNC in 5x4. The radio said wind was a steady 30mph with gusts to 45mph IIRC. Snow blowing right into my face right off the lake which was just a few miles beyond that tree line. Snow stopped (not the wind) for about 10 minutes while I made this photograph. It was clouding over again and the snow resumed while I tore down my setup. I was thinking -- this is early October in Michigan?

When I got back in the car I found my wife laughing her tail off making one joke after another about artists and suffering for art and all that. Behind every stereotype there's a little kernel of truth, yes?

i gotta say people...a really stellar set of pictures here. nary a bum frame in the batch. i've only been on this forum for a couple of months, and was starting to think this forum consisted of a bunch of guys who fiddled with their bellows but couldn't or wouldn't shoot anything but test shots of their back yards (hey, i've got plenty of test shots of my back yard too...). turns out it's not so! that's very gratifying.

Sheldon,
I have a quick question about this image. I've been studying the reflection in the water. I note that the trees on the left side of the mountain appear in the reflection and the small cloud beyond the mountain appears in the reflection but the mountain does not appear in the reflection. This must be due to angle from elevation. The tree detail was lost to accommodate the highlights of the mountain which in my mind is an excellent compromise. The image is beautiful.

Rory,
Really enjoy the layering in this image and that moon. The spacious graphic design is outstanding.

Bruce,
That NC is just gorgeous. If that is what NC looks like I have found a new friend.

Marko,
Lots of great textures. What format Shen-Hao are you using?

John,
Really great contrast and flow in this image.

To Everyone: really nice work, inspiring. I'm hoping to make a contribution to this thread in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks!

Yes, I was shooting from significantly higher than the lake, which is why the mountain does not show up in the reflection. Another factor is that I used a pretty strong indirect front rise coupled with pointing the camera down at the lake (both standards tilted strongly toward the mountain) which alters the relationship of the foreground to background. For the exposure, I used a 3 stop hard ND grad filter to hold back the mountain and sunlit areas (grad placed across the tree line). This was taken pretty close to sunrise so there was a strong differential between the exposure of the shadow foreground and the sunlit mountain.

I'm really pleased with the image. Glad you enjoy it as well.

Thanks Joe, it's just a 4x5, and not even a real Shen but a cheap(er) clone. But it keeps the air tight between the lens and the film, which is all I need at this time. :)

I'm starting to see how fun Architecture photography can be! I'm fortunate enough to live next to alot of very funky buildings (Erik Owen Moss I believe someone told me?) And since I work right next to them I'v been granted permission to shoot them (since alot of them are back in gated parking lots behind other buildings)

I picked the most obvious angle for this building. Next time I think I'll try a few different angles before I move on to the obvious angles of the next building over. Figure I might as well get the easy angle first!

Intense color change in the Adirondacks in 1995 near Lake Placid, NY. Those in the know will recognize Heart Lake where the Adirondack Mt. Club has its Lodge. Tallest Mountain in the back of the image is Algonquin (2nd tallest peak in the Adirondacks) with Wright Peak in front of Algonquin.

Image taken with Linhof Technikardan 45S, Rodenstock f5.6 150mm Apo Sironar S, Fujichrome Velvia (original). No filter, Exposure NR; image taken at about 8:30 AM. Only 1 photo was able to be recorded due to wind blowing across the lake right after image was taken. Brian, wow that is creepy, I don't think I could look at that right before I go to bed, haha!

here is one (not really a 'great photograph' per say) that sums up my apartment in one photograph, a conglomeration of stuff mostly car, computer, camera, or gun related. I tidied it up a bit before I took the photo, so at least I don't look like a slob, haha! I'll be hanging this one up at work, to remind me of the fun I have waiting for me on the weekend!

Sheldon, depends on if I want to shoot rocks & trees.... or people :D

just more parts in the box! That box with the MISC PARTS scribbled on it was actually what sparked my interest for the photo, it was perched up there so nicely, so I straightened things up and grabbed a shot. I have a tenancy to scribble a name on most of my boxes and shove them in the closet, when ever I find something new that needs a longterm place, I toss it in the appropriate box, haha!

Here's a better photograph from this weekend, to make up for my slightly off topic image! My only disappointment with this photo is that the branches on the tree are so thin, and their value is so close to the rocks that it almost blends in! Hopefully it won't blend in on an 8x10, or 11x14. F32 at 1/8th I believe, Nikor 200 with a bit of front rise and some swing to bring the closer rocks on the right in better focus.

really? It seems like a perfect place to shoot! (lots of folks rock climbing! Maybe they scare away the photographers, haha!) There is a little opening that is perfect to setup and shoot! I'm glad to hear you haven't seen anyone else shooting there, I figured it was probably one of the 'prime spots', but I liked it so much that I decided to come back with the 4x5! (I usually try to avoid the 'prime' spots, especially with the 4x5)

This was my capture with the digital when I saw it the first time I was up there hiking around. The direct light wasn't hitting the tree at this time though, I was pleasantly surprised to find a small shaft of light hitting JUST the tree when I went back there!

Engaging in it's simplicity. Makes me wonder what the h is up there! Do you still have the Seneca?

Hi Jim

No the Seneca is long-gone. It was a 6.5" x 8.5" camera. I found the body first, backless. It took a few months--searching fleas, junk shops etc--to find an 8x10" back, which I cobbled-adapted into an 'expansion back." That was 20-some years ago. In ebay world finding a back woulda taken no time.

It was the first bona-fide view camera I ever owned. It was eventually swapped-or-sold as I 'traded-up' into ever-larger/fancier/famous-maker cameras.

Which of course didn't necessarily translate into better/cooler/more-amazing photographs. Not a bit.

Maybe in a previous life I sailed. I've long used simple 'rigging' for various applications. Anchor a rope, run it all over, along/across the ceiling via screw-eyes, knot it somewhere else. It supports backgrounds for photo purposes, acoustical treatments when recording music or canvas as impromptu loose-structure window drapes....it can give a nice 'inside a desert tent' ambience. Sometimes I hang patchwork quilts from the rigging. Easy way to display 'em.

Sorry--nothing kinky. :)

So. Summer afternoon, drawn windowshade drowsing to-and-fro in a slight breeze. The camera was already in the room on a tripod--I'd just finished doing somebody's portrait. Then saw the light vis-a-vis the rope, the shadows, the windowshade's to-and-fro. One of those "there it is!" moments of visual recognition. Turn camera around, focus, whrrr went the shutter.

I now have a swell 5x7" Seneca 'Chautaugua' cycle-style camera. Gotten via the bay. Has a back and everything!

I've learned my lesson. It will NOT be sold-or-traded in pursuit of a 14"x28" Sinar System cycle-style camera. :)

This one may depend too much on the monitor for appreciation. On mine (recently calibrated), the image has a dream-like quality, but perhaps a bit too much.

Thanks for your generous comments.

VDB is vandyke, one of the silver iron processes. Toning with palladium gives much greater permanence to vandyke prints since the silver metal is replaced with palladium. The color is very warm brown/black, almost identical to what you get with a straight palladium print developed in warm potassium oxalate. The process is remarkable simple, quite economical, and is capable of the same very long tonal scale of pure palladium.

Edirne is in Turkey, very near the border with Bulgaria and not far from Greece. It was the capital of the Ottoman Empire before the turks conquered Constantinople.

Original negative was 6X9cm on HP5+ with a Fuji GSW690II. Scanned and some perspective control (manipulation?) applied in Photoshop. Printed with a same size digital negative.

Don,

Did you get any staining with the gold chloride additive? I tried this with VDB but my prints would not clear.

Also, how does the color with the additive compare to gold toning? I expected to see a more purple brown look from the gold.

Sandy
Sandy,

Since I didn't mask the print in this case I can't say if I had any staining, however just by looking at the bright white highlight I can't see a stain. This was printed on Cranes Diploma Parchment. Compared to the straight VDB I made of the same negative and exposure time the print definitely has a purple brown tone. I added 1 drop gold per 9 drops VDB.

Now I have a question for you. Any idea why the palladium additive (your formula published on unblinking eye) percipitates when mixed with VDB or Kallitype sensitizer?

I'll make another print later this week with the gold additive and mask the print and see if I get staining.

Don

Don,

Might be caused by an excess of oxalic acid in the ferric oxalate solution. That for sure will do it with kallitype, but there might be some other reason in your case.

Just for the record, the palladium additive formula in my article at www.unblinkingeye.com is similar to the one in Dick Stevens' Making Kallitypes: A Definitive Guide. I remember testing it, and it worked fine for me, but that was some years ago and I can not recall all of the conditions.

Shot these a few days ago, developed them last night and scanned this morning. I've been attempting to achieve a dreamlike, yet imperfect feeling with a lot of my shots lately. I really like how a lot of the old plate photographs are imperfect yet still utterly charming despite what they might be lacking technically by today's standards. I don't really like the super clean, perfect feel of modern photography nor do I even really care for the meticulous nature of AA. I have a vision which doesn't include perfection so my exposure, equipment, and development reflects that.
Shot on a 4x5 Calumet, 1961 Ektar 203mm 7.7 wide open, HP5, developed for 7.5 minutes in stock D76 at about 24C. Colour scan inverted gave the sepia-esque colouration. Tell me what you guys think, fairly new to LF.

Hi Paul

Your photos do convey the dreaminess you describe/desire. I like them. I wonder: What if the women's hair and/or dress were messier or more archaic-seeming; in accord with said dreamlike/imperfect state?

Looking closer, something else: both models appear, perhaps, rather self-conscious. Suspicious about what that photographer is really up to. The straight-haired woman, in the profile pose--her body language suggests considerable tension, a guardedness? Was that intentional? There seems almost a wall between subjects and camera. You may come that close--but no closer, please.

Yes, sometimes lumps & bumps do make photos more inviting; the viewer isn't psychically-emotionally kept at a distance, no velvet-rope stanchions surrounding Yon Flawless Masterwork. Boundaries between Voyeur and Legitimate Invitee go all shifty.

I like evidence of the negative-edge for similar reasons. The sprockety blur-off from 35 mm, the various scalloped-black outlines intrinsic to sheet film. Such edges can lend finiteness-to-mystery and vice-versa. This picture ends where it meets a blackened delineation, of varied thickness, to blur at-random into gray and then to white, what is beyond all of that and why?....

Both of these are wonderful and scary.

I pray to never encounter that damn dwarf. Ever.

Running/stumbling down the asphalt, heart pounding, dread and cold sweat. THEY were out there, behind me. Orbs and some kind of weird machines. Are they pursuing? Malevolent beings--or THINGS--of unknown origin. Help, please won't somebody help me? The horror, the horror.

Fragments from Nightmare Cinema.

Good photos too :)

If you're trying to get an old look, then a 200mm lens at f/7.7 on 4x5 won't give you shallow-enough depth of field, unless you come in quite close - which wasn't commonly done in the old days. You should try a longer lens.

Thanks, you raise some interesting points in your analysis of the photos. The tension there was intentional. I wanted the photos to be very quaint and quiet on the surface but have an underlying sense of despondence and strain simmering beneath it all. The fact that it was probably about 35 degrees outside helped with creating that, both of the girls were freezing in their dresses. And no I wasn't wearing a large coat; I worked in a tee shirt to make it fair lol. After I finished my last frame I said "I'm done-go run inside" and they took off for the hot chocolate waiting inside.

Getting that tension and wall was actually really hard because the two girls are my girlfriend and sister and thus I am very close to each of them. Getting them to block me off and slide into a blankness was actually pretty hard. Thanks for your kind words, really gives me some confidence as I have been actually worrying over these shots.

Ken I take it you eliptical marqueed their faces and then layer masked it and blurred?
Or something along those lines

And I realize I need a longer/faster lens, but I'm a college student, I'm having a hard enough time buying a box of film every now and then in addition to paying tuition never mind buying a new lens. With that said I've been looking for something on fleabay but I probably won't be buying anything til January or later. So for now I have to work with what I've got. But thanks a lot for the suggestions, quite helpful.

Jane and Pat, thanks for the kind words.
The photo of the dwarf is for a friend of mine who had a bad experience at Disney Land with one of the seven dwarves. She said he was very creepy and didn't want to let go after she had her photo taken with him. The whole story was quite humurous and we had a great laugh.
Digging through some old family christmas ornaments I found a couple of dwarves from the set of seven and realized I needed to make a print for my "traumatized" friend.:)
Pat, those orbs are the aliens landing! Actually those are street lights that are distorted from using only half a lens.
If you two want something really scary this doll creeps me out. It was my wife's childhood toy.

I've been looking at this thread and I guess I should contribute also. The first two shots were taken inside an old milking barn at Point Reyes National seashore in California. The barn was built in 1860 and the brass lens I was using was made in the 1860's also. The last shot is of a Redwood sapling at Muir Woods early in the morning. I used my 11x14 Hawkeye Portrait lens wide open for this. 8x10 Azo contact prints, Seneca Improved 8x10 Old T-max 400 in Pyrocat HD minimal agitation in tanks.

Apropos "oldizing" a picture; the latest ViewCamera has work by Peter Liepke that causes admirers of pictorialism (like me) to take heart. He transforms a 4x5 modern-emulsion negative into a larger paper negative by infusing an ink-jet inter negative with wax, and then uses that to make plat/gum contact prints. (NOTE: I just shortened a whole bunch of specific paragraphs into one sentence -- read the original).

Being a lazy geezer, I had the thought "why not scan a 4x5 negative with some wax paper in the mix?" Well... It doesn't come out the same, but it does come out different. Here are 3 scans of the same neg (with an epson 4990). 1) no waxpaper 2) the waxpaper is between the light source and the negative, and 3) the waxpaper is between the negative and the sensor. I happen to like the result (not for everything, of course).

This does NOT work on dense negatives -- they have to be somewhat thin for this to work. Also, I personally don't like it if the waxpaper has a crinkle in it -- then it just looks like something you found in the garbage.

BTW this was taken with a Wolly Focus 5.

Your middle image tickles me the most, rides that balance beam between Illusion Of Real and Dreamlike.

Not having seen the VC mag article and with only your summation to go by, some memories floated up. In art school days a pal was fascinated by image-transfers made by saturating photos from newspapers or magazines with solvents (gas, kerosene, naptha) and then, using a roller-brayer for pressure, transferring them to drawing paper.

Has anyone been fooling around with anything remotely similar but using inkjet-prints as the source material? (BTW I doubt if kerosene or gas--not to mention the inks which the source-photos were printed with--resulted in images with any kind of longevity, permanence or chemical integrity.)

Anybody fooling with any form of mechanical and/or chemical (or pressure'd or any combination thereof) transfer of digital photographics unto other support materials, an update similar to my pal's messy process?

Ken Lee
30-Nov-2007, 07:11
This is a very clever idea.

You could also scan the wax paper alone, and then in Photoshop, use it as a layer. Then, you could choose among a large variety of layer options: Darken, Lighten, Overlay, etc.

These options correspond to your placing the paper above/below/in between, etc. and then go a few steps further.

By adding a color cast, you can tone the background, the image, or both, accordingly.

Of course, you could scan (or photograph) any number of surfaces, including a stone wall, a slab of marble, or even a sheet of aluminum or copper....Just teasing the purists ;)

I've seen this technique done before actually, I've heard it called "creative scanning" here's a link, browse through some of the articles and you'll find some references to it and ideas about it.

Mark,

Thanks! I love your images too.

Ted,

It is a local street 20 miles east of Los Angeles. It was a beautiful afternoon after the rain that we rarely have here. I was invited to a party at a friend's house at a gated community called The Country and I had to stop my car on the street to take this picture. When I finally arrived and told the hostess why I was late, for the gate keeper/security called her 40 minutes earlier, the other quests asked: "Is that you with a wooden tripod on the roadside? We thought you were a construction guy."
