How about an open thread for all things floral. Here's one of mine. These are Puruvian Lillies I've been told. I like the sequence of young buds blossming into the five adults. The different stages of growth.

I've always like to photograph flowers: Color transparency, B&W negative, 35mm, 6x6cm, 4x5
For 35mm I used to use Kodachrome but because of long delays in lab turnaround (and loss of two rolls), I have switched to Fujichrome Astia 100F after much contemplation and advice from these forums. I opted for the Astia 100F because I wanted to contain the contrast for Ilfochrome printing. I like the results but am curious about Velvia, which I plan to try.

I have fallen behind in filing transparencies, mainly because I wanted to file the flowers according to their proper "common" name as well as the scientific name: neither of which I am qualified to do. Consequently it is time consuming and easy to put off into the future.

henry, BRILLIANT follow-up to ray's lovely print... kinda like a before and after. i love that while the tulips look all dried up, they are in fact sitting in a glass of water. which reminds me, my wife is returning home tomorrow afternoon - i gotta go water her plants! oh man, am i ever in trouble...

Wonderful. It's hard to give a critique on a single image like this because there are so many possible aspects that might or might not relate to other photographs you might want to make in the series. But I love the overall feel, and the many hooks for the imagination.

I wish I could image my new species with 4x5, but, alas, have to use a modern VP SEM for it. No more polaroid sandwiches, but from little bits to little bits. At least in VP, I do use tertiary photons (generated by secondary electrons-air interaction) for imaging.

Asher, that lens is very similar to your PS945. Part of the effect is caused by the nearly 1:3 ratio of a 3" flower macro'd onto a full 8X10 film. The bellows was probably out to 26 28 inches with the 12 inch lens. You will get nearly identical look with similar subject matter and your Cooke. I was wide open at f4. The Cooke begins at f5.6 iirc.

What are you going to do, put your 11x14 on wheels or else use a focal plane shutter or can you add a shutter someother way?

I'm so impressed Jim with the depth of experience with exotic lenses! What is the coverage of the lens? I'm worried whether I could use the Cooke for my 8x10 at at least f 8 for a group of flowers or nude study? I guess if I'm not at infinity, the circle will be bigger anyway!

This was my first ever try on high-key shot. First posting here...
This a 4x5 I shot of some tiger lilies, I accidentally fogged my negatives by accidentally turning on a light in the bathroom I was using as a dark room so I lost some contrast and you can see the outlines of the negatives I had on top of this negative. This was the only negative that survived, the rest were lost unfortunately. I'm relatively new to LF but it is by far my favourite format to shoot with.

by the way, i've seen this thread floating around for awhile and always ignored it. i HATE flower shots. they're sooooooo boring. and then i took a look...wow! some of you have really done some interesting things with flowers! some very unstraight shots in the bunch, whether it's Galli-esque odd lenses, alt-process (one of my 'things'), or just really interesting takes on an over-exposed subject. so...well done, all! lots of talent in this group, if it makes me look at more than one page of flower shots.

Was that an "in camera" paper negative?

Yep! I've been using paper in this camera, as paper that size is an awful lot cheaper than whole plate sized film. It seems to sit fairly flat in the plate holders without too much fussing.

My first successful Polaroid 809 (8x10) shot. Only screwed up twice to get here...

Senica Improved View camera (8x10), Leclair 13" brass lens w/ f32 waterhouse stop & Packard shutter. About 20" extension and hoping for 1/3 second on the shutter. A bit over exposed so I suppose maybe more like 1/2 to 3/4 seconds?

Cheap HP scanner did a little auto-color jiggery pokery on the image but not that far off.

Don -

I'm Rob Young. Russ and I have this same problem here, on Apug and I think at f295.org too... ;) :D

Rob, Russ, Ralph, Barry and I think there is a second Rob or "Bob" floating around when you combine LF, APUG, f295 and photo.net... So far as I know, we aren't related.

It happens at the local photography club too because there is a Caroline Young in town, does some very nice floral and greenery landscape stuff. No relation either but I DO have a first cousin named Caroline Young (forget her married name). And there was another Robert Young in Lawrence who besides being a deadbeat (I got his collection calls for a while) was also sought by the local D.A.'s office as a material witness to something bad. That was an interesting conversation... :D

Interesting... what does bleaching in very hot ammonia accomplish?
It depends. The first time the concentration of ammonia was too high and the image disappeared. The second time the hot ammonia bleached the image very much like cold ammonia would have done. The third time the result was the print I have posted. In short: I have no idea what hot ammonia might or might not accomplish, but experimenting is fun.

Thanks, I'm trying to find out where the glow "stops" with the lens' apertures; I think that one was around f/5.6. I did a duplicate at 8 and today I did a similar shot with 8 and 16. I can see the softness and a bit of glow on the groundglass, but the trick is getting the subtlety of the film through a cheap scanner, then onto the Internet. Something, I think, gets lost in translation. I'll have to make a contact print to know for certain.

having fun is work sometimes... :D

Great images, Kerik, my favorite is the second, but it's a difficult choice. I'm intrigued by two different qualities you've got...1) the subtle pink & green coloration (especially no.2) of the process and 2) the directional element you get from the "emulsion."

Are the streaks from the developer or ???

Kerik Kouklis
18-May-2008, 22:20
Thanks, guys. I'm not seeing pink/green - if you're picking that up it's likely an artifact of scanning not the process. The directional thing you see is (somewhat intentional) sloppiness in development. BTW, the first one was shot with a 305mm Kodak Portrait at f/6.3.

Darryl Baird
19-May-2008, 05:27
I think the second image is really excellent, the almost diamond shape of the developing marks, vignetting, together with the overall composition just sings. I'm hoping to get to try my hand at wetplate in a few weeks, so its good to know you like the portrait lens.

The lens is very rare, very expensive and highly sought after.
Just kidding, it's only a simple and very cheap B+L projection lens. I think I paid $20 for it.
If anyone has the 18" version send me a pm, this one doesn't quite cover my 11x14.

Nice work Brian. So where does this x-ray film come from?

Thank you, Will!
Well since I'm too cheap to pay full price I buy it from e-bay, but I usually get regular old Konica PPG or Kodak T-mat. A search on google will turn up plenty of dealers, even then it's cheap compared to regular film. 100 sheets for $25-$30 in 8x10.

Ok. Here's mine. Keep in mind that this is my VERY FIRST large format photo with my "new" camera. I aimed at some flowers in the house, did a fair amount of guessing, and this is what I got.

Thought you might find this different. Large format for shure, 8x10 HP5, but shorter wavelength light. Well actually I do this with x-rays and ofcourse no camera or lens.

This is a 4x5 Gandolfi on ektachrome and a 5 minute paint job on a bed sheet for Brides Mag.
Ray's platinum tulips are super. I would like to learn more about Pt printing. Are costs prohibitive nowadays?

Stefan, it's not that bad :)

Actually it's rather good. I'd prefer the central part of the flower to be lighter, but otherwise I like it.
