I just got a new-to-me B&L Projection Lens. I think it's somewhere in the 12-14 inch range. The diameter is 3.5 inches, so I guessed that it's a f/4 and shot these...
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8005/6971585572_d86c44ca8d_c.jpg
Both were shot with a single strobe in an otherwise dark room. (Sadly I wasn't given a Packard Shutter with the lens;) I actually made a temporary lensboard out of cardboard... I was worried that it was gonna fall off.
Let me know what you think and shout out any suggestions for what to do with a nice, old, projection lens.

Really beautiful and delicate. Is this a print? What's with the soft edges and the off-white background?
..and what the heck is it? :D

I was having a hard time cropping this, so I slapped a matte over the 8x10 to see how it would be. It made everything better, so I exposed that way, which is why the soft lines and not-quite-white whites.
Around here we call that a fiddlehead. It's a young fern that hasn't unfurled itself yet.

Thank you :D. What I meant was I wasn't really thinking it'd turn out too well. Just kind of set it up and decided to see how it'd look in color. Good thing because the b&w fails imo. No separation of the elements.

I really appreciate that, thank you! Even though I've never been particularly enamored with flowers I've always sought them out as subjects just because they seem easily appealing and hard to make appalling! :D
I don't usually care much for Aero Ektar images but I do like this one... a lot. I really like the creamy subtle color contrasts.
Thanks. I am drawn to the upper left flower even though it is completely out of focus. That bit of sharpness seems to give the photo the grounded base it needs but I find the out of focus portions almost the subject over the sharp flower. The way the creamy pastel tones shift from one to another is what I like about it. Will have to try and take that further this weekend, hopefully successfully.

The pink has gentle tone variations and the green/cyan is a the perfect complementary. As backgrounds should, it varies down to it's darkest tone. Two sole complementary colours and the right balance. After that comes the focus thing and structure.
Looking forward to some more to learn from.

<snip>I am drawn to the upper left flower even though it is completely out of focus.
IMHO, that's because of the increased density and color contrasts between the flower and the background. It's also because of eye training... most languages read from upper left to lower right so that's where we first look.
Interesting points! Fun to analyze. This one didn't turn out quite how I wanted. I kind of wanted the pedals to slowly fade into blur but they all just went completely away.

And I was wondering why my c41 negatives were looking pale, thin, and bit red/brown... Well I am an idiot and mixed the chemicals diluted 100% too much. Mixed a new batch up at ultra small working strength - 70ml for btzs tubes. 4 negatives look great, best I've done.

Thank you for saying so, David. Old Polaroid film doesn't guarantee artistry in and of itself, of course, but when the right elements come together (light, framing, focus, etc.) it is a wonderful photographic medium. Too bad my stash is coming closer to its end with each passing day. But as long as I've maximized my use of it, I'm happy.

Very nice, David. I haven't done any work with IR yet, although I'd like to; however I think I've read here that some people rate this film at 1.5??? I guess it depends partly on the filter you use, i.e. how much visible light it passes. Nice subject, though, and the Delta shot is lovely.
I admire your prodigious output. I've finally moved to the country, with the intention of retirement, but have now taken on another job. When will I get my priorities right so that I can spend time on photography? I don't know. Regards,
Barry.

I like the tone, thats exactly how K7 carbon comes out on rag papers.
Softproof for K7 Carbon and Canson Rag Photographique, Hahnmule Photo Rag, Cranes Portfolio Rag. Theoretical Dmax would be about 1.61 except for the Cranes about 1.4 ish. Profiling theese papers was an interesting exercise for me. Looking at the prints going on judgement I find the Hahnmule orange and the Canson more olive brown, but that could be my light.

This one and the first one are lovely. The first is more vibrant (the tessar look I suppose) and has a purity and softness about. The last has texture and those lovely highlights on the tops of the petals set in a stronger composition. Two completely different images.

Two things have been happening:
1) I have started selling a lot of my equipment in an effort to rationalize and keep equipment that I will be using more than once a year :-) (might be whishfull thinking but one has to try) which include my Hassy with 120 Makro
2) There have been several Nikkor 120/5.6 macro for sale around the forumand you know that a boy needs new toys....
While I am not a dedicated macro shooter by any conceivable means, I still like to have the option to take a close range subject from time to time.
And I just happen to have a G-claron 150/9 (difficult to focus on the GG in low light...) so I gave it a try as a "macro" lens.
http://www.LucBenacPhoto.com/img/s2/v53/p863499793-4.jpg
While I am not really sold on the composition, I would appreciate the good eye of this thread to agree or disagree that the result with this lens are just fine.
I have attached another shot with the 120 Makro and a better composition
http://www.LucBenacPhoto.com/img/s2/v53/p52636022-4.jpg
I am fighting back second thoughts about selling the Hassy with the 120 Makro by considering that I have a very good alternative already on hand.
Cheers,
Luc

Here is an image taken with a 19 inch Wollensak Varium f5.6 with 8x10 Tmax. I finally got to spend an hour in the darkroom this afternoon and was able to print this image of "Old Roses". The 8x10 Tmax film was developed in Ilforsol 3, with the print made on Ilford MGIV Pearl RC, with some very old 130 Developer (1:3). I could not find my contact holder, so just tried to focus it with my 8x10 Durst CL-2000/Fotar. I am still in the infant stages of darkroom stuff, but this print certainly appears to me to be a good beginning. Now if I can only find the time....comments/observations are welcome. Jon

So I have the Century 10A set up finally, and I've been using it this week for all kinds of stuff. Lots of failure going on, but I'm learning quite a bit. Some friends were visiting from out of town yesterday and kindly brought us some flowers. Since I never have flowers on hand I thought I would try a few shots. Not my area of expertise, but whatever. (Let me say that, as with landscapes, doing this kind of work gives me renewed respect for those who do it well.)
I ended up racking the camera out to 37" (didn't know it could go that far) with my 19 3/4" Copying Ektanon. Trouble is, the film I'm using has an E.I. of 1.5, and shooting at f/22 became f/45 with the bellows extension factor. This led to a twenty minute exposure. No joke. I had to pull the dark slide and walk away into the office for twenty minutes. This didn't even account for reciprocity, but I have no idea what factor to use with this film so I just gave it extra development instead.

Today I was futzing around shooting flowers again, mostly with non-instant film. As I was about to tear down I saw a sheet of type 55 that was lying on the table nearby, shot it for the heck of it and pulled it through the rollers not expecting much, mainly because material this expired is so unpredictable.
When I peeled it apart and cleared the negative I was surprised to see a severe case of solarization with a gilding effect that I've never seen before. (The only way I can show this metallic sheen is with a crappy snapshot of the negative in the wash. See below.) I was hoping to be able to capture some of this glowing look in the scanning process, so I first scanned it as a negative as I usually would, but then scanned it as a positive transparency and then on the flatbed like a print. Each version scanned in completely differently on its own, and since I couldn't really decide on a favorite I ganged them all up. Only the last one required significant post processing. Scanning breakdown is as follows:
Upper left - Negative scan. The colors came in like that when scanned RGB.
Upper right - Transparency scan. I expected this to simply look like an inverted version of #1, but that's not how it came out.
Bottom left - Flatbed reflective scan. Again, totally different. Colors left as they scanned in.
Bottom right - An inverted version of #3. On this one I had to severely crunch the levels to get it to work.
Anyway, weird stuff, but I am both surprised and pleased with the result. I wish I could count on it happening again!

Bravo! THAT is a nice use of DOF. Is that still the projection lens?
Thanks, Bryan. I got lazy and didn't put in the equipment details for the shot, but I used the same process lens I've been using for many of these still life shots lately. I got it last year on a whim for $15 and was on the verge of selling it or giving it away when I thought, "Maybe I should try it first." The only markings on it are, "Eastman Kodak, Rochester, NY, 259mm, f/5.6." The construction is symmetrical, I can tell that much, and it is at least single coated, but there is no iris. Beyond that I have no idea. What's great about it is it allows me to really extend the Century studio camera for serious macro work if I want. The downside is there is no stopping it down, but for shots that don't need that, like the one above, it's great.

Beautifully rich color and detail. I rarely shoot color these days myself. When the choice is between pennies a shot for home-brew B&W processing and big $$$ for E-6 at the lab, I tend to shy away from the chromes.

Processed some sheets tonight taken two weeks ago. This is a variant of one I posted before, but I tried some light painting with an LED flashlight from above on the flower on the right since the reflector wasn't filling in as much as I wanted. I'm not sure about the result, or if you can even tell. I took three other shots with varying degrees of flashlight time and they were all blown out, so maybe I didn't get the balance right.

This is lovely. If you hadn't mentioned it I never would have known it was done with a flashlight. I'm going to have to practice more so that I can better determine how long to illuminate the subject and how much to move the light around during exposure. Having a digital camera for practicing would be great, but that's not an option at the moment.

After various constructive comments on both this forum and the talkphotography forum I have had another go at processing my Orchid with Black Slate image.
This time I used CS6 along with Silver Efex Pro 2 for some localised contrast control and hopefully have been able to subdue the halos around the petals that was evident in my first processing attempt. I posted the negative version of this last month (at least I think I did), but had forgotten about the positive. Usually with type 55 if I shoot for the negative the positive half is blown-out and unusable, but for some reason, perhaps because of the significantly expired film, the positive worked out decently exposure-wise. I still prefer the negative, myself.

Thanks for the comment Philippe, I used the supplied aperture disk with the smallest aperture and closed the holes, as I understand it this equates to circa f11.
The 200mm Imagon is not designed for 8x10 but covers it comfortably at the shooting distance which gave about 1:2 magnification.

Oh, Pat, thank you very much, but I have a great deal to learn yet, too... ;)
Thank you..... I just wish I really knew how to scan properly, maybe someday.
Pat
I learned a lot in my "medium format era". I always scan all my negatives, even the bad ones (well, except for those that got no light at all, or that got supernova amount of light). Then I work on them, maybe longer on the bad ones, trying to bring the best out of them, knowing that they won't be presentable anyway. But I take it as an exercise... it's easy to work on a (nearly) perfect negative, but I learn only so much... working on a difficult/bad negative is something totally different... And then the satisfaction is sometimes almost as good as from the perfect negative, even if I won't show the result to others (they don't care where I started, or what I went through. They mostly care only about the finish line)

copperplate heliogravure from 8x10 neg
May I ask your method for converting your negative into a positive? Analog or digital, and if analog how? I ask because I am planning to try photopolymer gravure very soon and am interested in both analog and digital ways of doing this.
hendrik faure
2-Dec-2012, 03:20
David, I do both - digital on Pictorico OHP film and analog contact printing on orthocromatic film, where I have some left like Ilford ortho. Unfortunately these films became expensive and difficult to get (zB Mahn company).
I have no experience in Photopolymer, for copperplate anyway you need rather low contrast positives, optimal use steps 1 to 12 on stouffer scale. Mahn offers a good low contrast develloper, but expensive too and exspires after very few prints or about 1/2 hour
Hendrik
Thanks for the useful reply. I have some xray film to use if the contrast can be tamed. Thanks to your info i can get started with a stouffer, I doubt photpolymer requires more contrast than that but we will see.

The strip of lighter tone looks like a reflection off the inside of your camera back. Is the inside of your camera back flocked fully or is it bare and perhaps a bit shiny?
