If you are married, I'll bet your wife is pleased to hear that. :D
Nice shot, by the way.
Of course, I do really know the difference between a botanist and a bigamist: a botanist loves flowers, and a bigamist ... you know what, never mind. Thanks for the kind words. I'm regularly daunted at the wealth of beauty casually offered up in this forum, and getting an image that doesn't look TOO out of place here is the bar I strive to reach.

Nice colours, Eirik. Arctic flowers are always so vibrant because they have to kick and scratch just to survive, let alone thrive the way they do.

Scott,
Nice photo!
More impressive is the fact that a CZJ Tessar 105 can yield this kind of result on 5x7! I've got 2 Ikontas with this lens.
This photo makes me consider wanting to buy a broken 6x9 just to rob it of a lens... just not today.

Thanks, Chris! Yep, the Tessar covers at portrait distances or closer. Short enough that I can get really close with it. Been tempted to sell it several times, but it's just so darned nice...

But they were important when composing, so I give it to you again…
Kodak Tmax 400 (TMY2) 6x9 on a Toyo 45CF, Grandagon N 90mm f/4,5.
A color image you say? This is a "trichromie" image, three exposures with red, green and blue filters (25, 47 and 58) and the scanned and merged into a color image in Photoshop. I love it because of its BW sharpness/acutance feeling.

It's Carbon Toner from Wolfgang Moeresh. You can get it from Freestyle but be prepared for sticker shock. It runs about 17 bucks for 100ml. It can be deluted 1+20 or 1+200 and using it very diluted still gets great results. I use Moeresh's bleach on the prints as well. It tones on Fiber as well as RC. Likes the print to be warm and the toner as well. Problem is that it is addictive and really brings a luminosity to prints with tones that run hot to about the color of good strong coffee with lots of half and half. Have fun.

You know, Christopher, you come back to that (tonal separation) a lot. I think I am finally starting to get it. A little. Man, my head is thick. Now I have to learn to better *see* it before pressing the shutter.
Indeed, this shot is inspiration.

Thank you for pointing that out.
I think it is a fantastic photograph because it transcends that rose itself and presents the viewer with the symbol of rose. Rose as we think in our heads or see in a dream. If I wanted a rose hanging on my wall, that would be the one.
Still, a portrait of a grandaughter by her grandfather is worth a million time more than a symbolic rose.

Thanks David, et al. In fact I posted the duvet because I feared that romantic pictures are not really acceptable. I did quite a few before switching to hardcore still life (no more silk stockings now).
Today I binned some excessive 'Fusseli's to avoid the risk of turning in the grave later on.
If romanticism is ok, then the time has come to to learn how to use selective focus. Mandoman's guitar and Coquis' rose have been a revelation.

Leonard,
The idea is to get an out-of-focus dark edge to separate light toned things from their surroundings. It takes two exposures and two light sources.
First, open the background light - the subject appears as a dark silhouette. Shift the lens-board slightly forward to enlarge and defocus the subject. Expose.
Second, close the background light and open the foreground light. Shift the lens-board back to normal focus. Expose again.
It looks horrid when it is overdone. Hope this will be useful.

Graflex RB Super D 3x4 converted to a 4x5 back, Kodak E100VS, unknown lens (I believe it to be a Petzval from what I recall of the purchase, but others who certainly know better believe it to be otherwise or have reversed rear elements; all I know with certainty is that it is old and unmarked with anything to assist identification, too short to focus the camera to infinity so less than 6" f.l., and fun) exposed assuming an aperture of f/6 (no iris, of course). The innocent victim is a Hosta from the backyard and thus could not escape my molestation.

Thank you Jim.
I look to shoot flower details in shade or moderately overcast light. Its even better if I can find some direct light bouncing back in from something nearby.
In this case I found these columbines in a shaded nook. The camera was just outside the shade, so I had full sun available to bounce back in. I used the white side of my darkcloth to bounce some light from camera left.
The previous alpine forget-me-not image was shot in light overcast in the afternoon, so it was like a giant softbox at about 45 degrees. I had seen them near my tent site earlier in the day and knew I wanted a shot if the opportunity presented itself. When the light was right a little later, I went over to shoot them.
The rest comes down to roughing in the adjustment for bellows extension and choosing the exposure correctly.

The picture was taken on a Linhof Kardan Master TL and Fuji Provia 100F.
Very nice!
To be honest, I thought it was rather horrible but I liked the propellor like curves on the leaves, which is why I took it. The lens is very soft up close but much nicer focused further away, a contrastier lens would have been better. At the moment I do this as an escape, usually tired and stressed, so the results are somewhat irrelevant to me.

Very nice!
I have a row of weeping willows along a stream I'd like to capture like that. I assume you let the wind and enough exposure time create the effect.
Care to share exposure time?
/gth
Struan Gray
22-Nov-2010, 13:03
Thanks gth. The blur is mostly movement of the flower heads in a gusting stiff breeze, but there are also some out-of-focus effects. I laid the focal plane along the ground, so that the rushes and bog cotton would be mostly in-focus and provide some texture, and that threw some of the nearby thistle heads out of focus. I took a few of these at different times, and I haven't scanned the whole series yet, so I'm not fully sure which exposure this is, but it's somewhere around thirty seconds to a minute.
A tree in a wind will probably require bracketing to get the mix of blur and texture that is most pleasing. I rarely bracket exposure, but I do bracket out-of-focus and blur effects as I find them really hard to predict on the ground glass. I like to aim for several cycles of whatever is moving - in this case I waited for a large gust and exposed while the resulting oscillations died away. It's taken in twilight, so no need for ND filters.
In the trees thread I posted a photo of a rowan taken in a similar breeze (stiff enough to try and steal my darkcloth, but not to rattle the tripod). That was a two minute exposure (again, in twilight) which gave a nice mix of blur when the tree was shaken and leaf detail when it was standing still. What looks good is a question of taste, but you have a lot of options to play with - at least, in good light.
It would be interesting to see it with just a motion blur.

I love this one by Alan George:
http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showpost.php?p=312089&postcount=82
There is, of course, no one type of motion blur. A pure oscillation, like a pendulum, gives a double image with a streak in between. More random, natural movement tends to produce more streaks and 'fluff'. The interplay between the dynamics of the motion and the shutter speed can be complex, especially if you add in aberrations and out-of-focus effects from using large apertures. You can also change the look of the final photo quite radically by using several short exposures instead of one long one - texture tends to be preserved better this way.
It's all fun :-)
cjbroadbent
24-Nov-2010, 06:49
Struan, Fascinating - I like the oscillation idea. I've done something similar with a flash bulb (the big blue one) on the end of a pole to get a freeze at the end of the swing.
Struan Gray
24-Nov-2010, 13:01
Note that a quantum mechanical pendulum gives you a central spot with a blur each side. Not common in LF situations.
My feeling is that even casual viewers of photography are very good at interpreting motion blur. It's a natural way to add gesture to a static frame, and although there is a danger of it becoming a schtick, it's a useful tool to have ready.
I sometimes let the wind shake the whole camera. The effects can be a bit centered with a wide angle (where angular blur gets bigger towards the edges) but I mostly use long lenses where the effect is even across the frame.

How are you scanning in the 4990 without getting Newton rings. Do you use the area guide or some sort of holder? Just curious as I struggle myself.

26-Nov-2010, 09:12
Thanks Jim. Matt, I do get Newtons rings laying the neg directly on the platen, but not always, it seems its hit or miss.I scanned this particular neg a couple times and one it had rings, the other not.I do have the the Scan Science wet mount kit for both 8x10 and 4x5, but I broke the 8x10 glass :(
Question for you, have you gotten any fogging on the inside of your 4990?I notice some fogging when shinning a bright light across my platen glass.I guess its out gassing of some sorts from some components inside the scanner. It doesn't seem to really effect the scan, at least not that I can tell (yet) Just curious. Not sure what to do about it.
Chris

26-Nov-2010, 11:24
Chris,
I disassembled my 4990 and cleaned the glass after I noticed the fogging. I used a pdf on the internet that had some nice instructions for disassembly, but my link no longer works and evidently I failed to save a copy. Maybe someone here can locate the document. It was called "Disassemble of Epson Flatbed Scanners" I think.
I never seem to have newton rings when I scan emulsion side down with my 8x10 negs using the film guide.
Mine has some haze but I haven't noticed anything yet in my scans. I have been looking at cleaning mine as well but didn't want to start until I had some guidance. Maybe I'll just take it slow--can't be too complicated.
Just found this.

Absolutely +1 Matus. That is a brilliant little mushroom, so nicely lit.
Jasmine.
Shanghai film, and if you look carefully you will see a fault on the RHS, which I have seen on 2 negatives so far.

BDT - your tulips are such large files that I can't see more than 1/4 of the image on my screen. The highlights are all blown out too - I asume a scanning issue. That migth not be so noticable if they were smaller. From what I can tell the lines in the last one are pleasing.
I got these back from ScanCafe; the files I posted are from their preview .jpgs. I was able to "rescue" the highlights almost entirely from the 16-bit .tiff files, however the files are so HUGE (200 megapixels!) my poor little computer chokes when I try to output them.
I'm going to a friend of a friend's this weekend to try and work from the .tiff files. Perhaps I should have waited to post until after then...

I find it impossible and quite daunting to decide on an arrangement I'm happy (to critical with myself with photographing) so my solution was when the kids go to bed, and with the late evening hours of daylight to go into the neighborhood and find flower subject matter. It is a good chance to socialize in the community and catch up on the art of conversation. All of my flowers are still in the ground and black backdrop added. Available light.

Very nice, Peter. Just curious, what do you use to support the black backdrop on your wanderings?
p_markowski
27-Jan-2011, 12:25
Thank-you bobwysiwyg,
For the backdrop I used a heavy black (dense is a better word) velvet and folding type tent poles. The tent poles were a replacement kit, complete with the thin bungee. The fiber glass poles could be cut to suit the tent pole length required and had metal points to push into the garden ground. It was cheap and could collapse quickly and into the backpack it goes.

At this time of year, Tulips and Daffodils are available in the local grocery store for a few dollars. My wife brings them home, and I borrow them.

This past Monday was the President's Day holiday in the US, and apparently I was the only one to think to visit a nearby historical house and garden, the Elizabeth Gamble Garden in Palo Alto, CA, so I had the place to myself (except for the friendly retired ladies who volunteer there).
