Yes, something different!

Hi all,
My first contribution: a photograph from my first solo show, back in 2018.
This whole series was initially based on making ikebanas, and ended up with single flowers, all captured between 8:00pm and 4:00am, while my wife was away for work for a couple of months and I turned the house into a flower shop..
Cheers, J.

Nice of you to have put up the link! Thanks Tin Can
Another one :)
This one ended up being a one-off 280x150cm framed print on Canson fine art paper, sitting in the collector's bedroom right above their bed

I have been considering getting back into 4x5, haven't used my Linhof IV in 10 years. Bought a lens to get me going but also put my 120 Nikon Macro AmED on a Linhof board.
I think daturas are a very photogenic flower.

Eliverto, that's a fantastic image. I don't know if your capture of the spider on the petal was serendipitous or otherwise, but it adds something to the beautiful rose.

Thank you Tom, I just noticed the spider when I brought the rose inside, and it didn't move during the process and came to be part of the image :)

Dying Tulip. Photo of the print. This one is tough to print, the background has too much density. Too much density! You don't hear us say that too often about shadows.
I used to call this bent tulip, then my wife said she hated this photo because it just reminded her of death. I agree and like it even more now. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230326/8c8f4a78717508f49b1ce5e577d3b1b9.jpg

In 2017, Christopher Barrett posted his set-up for floral photography work - https://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?29552-Flowers-Anyone&p=1384718&viewfull=1#post1384718
Unfortunately, the link he posted no longer works. I've tried emailing Mr. Barrett, but no joy. I've even tried the Wayback Machine, but no joy either. I am not totally conversant in using the Wayback Machine, so the issue may be with me. It appears Christopher has not posted on the LFPF for a couple of years.
Any thoughts on how I can find the information and the associated images Mr. Barrett posted?

... I used to call this bent tulip, then my wife said she hated this photo because it just reminded her of death.
Well, if you hang it upside-down then you can call it "Unfolding Tulip."
The tulip isn't dead. It's just shedding its petals because it is, hopefully, pregnant. Pregnancy doesn't usually jibe with glamour (unless it is your wife...) - it's a time for sweat pants, baggy T-shirts and sensible shoes. Same with the tulip, it is shedding its sexy attire - it has served its purpose. Your wife should be able to relate; The photo isn't depicting death but birth.

To me it is neither death nor birth but rather an awkward pose, that nevertheless makes an interesting image.
There is also an awkward transition from light to dark and vice versa around the edges of the plant (especially noticeable at the top third of the image) towards the background that suggest a heavy manipulation of tones (similar to an aggressive unsharp masking with large radius in PS) that distracts attention away from the subject.

The updated version looks like a different image where the eye stays on the main subject and tends to explore its perceived qualities by slowly moving back and forth for many times!

This one is from a long time ago, probably the 1990s. I took it using 8x10" film with a Sinar P system. It was an exercise in 'how close can I get?' I used all of my extension rails, 3 bellows, three tripods. There was at least 2 meters of bellows extension. I used an enlarging lens, an El Nikkor 150mm, reversed. I think it's a begonia....

I ended up in the same situation, but did not have the three rails, three bellows or three tripods available. Then it hit me - the subject is about the size of a 35mm negative so the appropriate lens is a 50mm reversed. This reduced the camera geometry to manageable proportions. The only problem is that it was 1.5" from the back of the lens to the subject. But, it was that or nothing.
Oh, great shot, BTW. B&W flowers are hard to make work, but this one does - my mind supplied the color with no problem.

I frequent the "Arizona Garden" on Stanford's campus, and I went a couple weeks ago when several cacti had large, red, flowers open. They only last a couple of days. For this one, I started out trying to make it work at about f/8 or f/11, but didn't like it, so I stopped down to f/32. Generally, I don't do the "f/64" look any more, and prefer to have more subject isolation, but at this distance, and with all the pollen, I think it works:

I love both of these shots! The cactus flower is very nice. Also, I am highly confident that your second image, "Purple," is of a clematis (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clematis). Beautiful image and I love the textures in both of these!

Yes, my wife looked at a color image and thought it would be a clemantis too. Thanks!

Mael, outstanding.
Thanks to all. :o
White paper for the background, under a roof window, available light, and some white carboard on the left and right for more diffused light. Approx. 5 sec exposure at f/22 (compensated for reciprocity and bellows extension).
I also made other shots the same afternoon. First picture still with the Dogmar at f/22, second first try of my 165mm f/2.8 Biotessar I adapted, at full aperture.

These are all lovely.
I'm conflicted over which of the top two I prefer - each has its own qualities.

Thanks, Martin !
First two are the same setting with different backgrounds - first deep brown, second light grey.

Iga, thank you for sharing this lovely example of the art of printing. This and similar such examples ought to be shown to the countless photographers spinning their wheels in arguments over subject matter, and whether deep DoF is better than shallow, and why one does or does not need this lens or that camera or film, etc., etc. It might lead, in its simplicity, lead to greater understanding and, thus, more productive use of time.
Thanks all ! Philip, thank you very much for your kind words, although my wife says I am crossing limits of simplicity :)
